This is genius!! I'm so glad I didn't start my shingles yet!! I'm almost to that point! I also have this house as combined with another and additions, I love how you made your own shingles in a different shape to combine with the kit ones, I think that's fabulous! This would really add to a genuine Victorian look. Also I love how you raised the tower, that was amazing! Now of course I want to do that with mine, especially since I'll be adding rooms on the roof as well, and the tower isn't quite tall enough without that extra height. I think your shingle job is awesome, it looks amazing! For the spike trim you could use very small wooden dowels, or fancy plastic pics that you can paint, maybe seach on ebay? Vintage ones are usually decorative. Loved your video ending, lol!!!
Thank you so much and I am so glad you found it helpful!! Great idea with the toothpicks and looking into fancy tooth picks. That could save a lot of time if I can find the right ones. 💕
This looks great! The spiky fenced in area is called the widows walk I think. I love the cardboard shingles. I wish I had thought of that before I bought real ones for my daughters dollhouse
So glad I watched this! I have strips of wood with a similar feel to the shingles I have for me Beacon Hill... I shoved them in a drawer thinking the flimsy things were worthless. Now they're going to be the offset shingle design! Didn't occur to be to have two shapes of shingles!! Thank you!
Looks great. As for the corners of the roof, usually the shingles should evenly meet at the corner without any corner shingles to cover the corners up. You can use an L shaped molding strip to cover up the corners where the shingles meet. Overall a great job ! Some spider webs throughout would be nice too.
Awesome! I cannot imagine you tackling such a humongous project while sick. Love the way this house is turning out. My only regret is not being able to see it in person when it's finally shown. Maybe it will be featured in a miniature/dollhouse magazine in the future. :)
Just bought my first dollhouse today. It’s the Victorian Alison Jr. as well. Your content inspires me. Looking to make it into a spooky house too!! Thank you for all your videos. This will help me tons!
Oh boy! First of all, feel much better soon, Ara! Secondly cue Twilight Zone music as shingling my haunted doll house has been on my fun-to-do list this weekend for weeks. Love your shingling! I cut my shingles very randomly out of a stack of those light cardboard sheets that come as stiffeners for new shirts ordered via online (used to be mail order). Thanks so much for posting your videos!
Looks great! Sorry you are not feeling well. Prayers! I have shingled one roof, and that was with My daughter's assistance. It is a job! That was 18 yrs ago and most of them are still on there.... Good job Ara 👍👍👍👍👍👍 you get better soon!!
Sounds like you did it really well then!! Do you remember what glue you used? I decided against what they said to use in the directions🤔 Thanks so much Delores!
Wood glue.... We didn't have directions either. Mine is an old one bought from the Goodwill Store. It was yellow. My two grandchildren ages 4 and 3 help me paint it blue like Bear in the Big Blue House !!! It became a family project for years to come! Still working on it!
I'm an overgluer too. Overtaper as well( actually had a boss who was constantly nagging about it) I laughed outloud when you said it; I've never heard anyone admit it before. Welcome to the club.P.S. your work is wonderful. Skill and creativity too. Quite lovely.
haha I have been admitting it for years ;) and I am somewhat proud of it.... mostly because my mini are solid because of it! We should make t-shirts ;) Thank you!
For the spiky things at the top of the roof I'm thinking about the little plastic swords that have an olive or fruit wedge on them. They are pretty easy to cut with x-acto and mini-saws...I have a box of 500 that I have used for other things and I think they might work for you.
Those are a great idea!! I have several ideas for the top pieces and right now I am dragging my feet on picking one to go with lol! I will definitely share the process when I figure out what I want to do ;) Thanks for the suggestion!
@@BentleyHouseMinis Here is what I was imagining...just snip off the thin hand guard part and voila! www.amazon.com/Royal-Black-Plastic-Sword-Package/dp/B004YG4DZO/ref=asc_df_B004YG4DZO/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=234628061491&hvpos=1o5&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2422782262642096340&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9013775&hvtargid=pla-387339396361&psc=1
I love the thought and dedication that you put into this task, Ara! Bravo - especially since you weren't feeling well. I hope you're on the mend, my friend. xoxo
Great idea adding different shape shingles and your idea of covering the corners definitely makes it look finished. Your color schemes are great and lends itself to Gothic Victorian architecture. Hope you feel better soon.
Just watching your shingle video again Ara, about to tackle my very first shingled roof, busy cutting up my egg cartons into shingles then I will begin, wish me luck 😊
Loved how you mixed the wood shingles with cardboard shingles to make up the difference. (I thought you were going to use those tongue depressor things). I also loved how you mixed the shapes. So cool!
Hmmm... that would have been really smart! LOL I didn't even think about tongue depressors but they would have probably worked well too! I will have to keep that in mind next time! Thanks Darnelle!
It is quite an undertaking (timewise) but the process is not too bad ;) And I def suggest painting the shingles when they are on the house if you want something other than "wood stain" color. Have fun!!
Looks great! I did a bit on my house years and years ago before children and life interfered for about 28 years. 🤣🤣🤣 At that time I was paranoid about warping due to moisture in the glue. I can’t remember what I used! 😫 When I started working at it again, about 6 years ago, I believe I read about using E6000. I created exterior panels for my Victorian using this glue. After many more years of lack of work, I came back to shingles raising. 😢 These are wood strip shingles in half scale because they definitely look more to scale. 🙄 Now I need to repair what I have done and hopefully finish this creation. How are your shingles looking now in April of 2020? Thanks for your input!
Sorry to hear that :( The last thing I would ever want to do is REDO shingles I have already done! So far everything is holding in place and still looks the same as it did the day I finished. However I do keep the house in the A/C in my home... so not sure how it would fair in an attic or outside storage.
My cousin used how you call it in english... pins for hair bend them wide to a V and kind of puzzle them close then use pins that are full bend to straight and use it a bit under the top and middle. the of top of the V’s he used pearls/beeds but you can make a arrow/spike top esey ❤️ (railing/fence to the tower bottom)
Depending on the size of your shingles, you could use specific scissors that are imprinted with a design! (They were quite popular with my elementary school art teacher and I used them like I breathed air-)
I look forward to the point where you add shutters on the windows. Old shutters just scream haunted victorian house, and the Addams Family house needs those to really sell that effect.
I have been building dollhouses to order now and I am SO TIRED of putting on wooden shingles. They're hard to get right in the corners. This will work great!!!

Hi Carol! Sometimes you can purchase dollhouse shingles from places like Hobby Lobby or miniatures.com BUT you would have to look for ones that match the ones already on the house. Your other option is you could remove the existing shingles and start new. Sometimes you can loosen up old glue with a hair dryer. I hope that helps a little bit!
Very true I did learn a lot. I feel like its just very vague for such a complicated LARGE area of the house. If it goes wrong it will be one of the first things people see! Scary!
@@BentleyHouseMinis Right?!? Well, I wouldn't have asked or said anything if you wasn't second guessing it and he happened to be right next to me.. Great job! I always wondered about the roof edges thing too. Your idea worked perfectly, and am sure you've started a new trend. For the roof spikes, it looks like ornamental fencing. Perhaps consider using a mold with a resin? HirstArts.com (I think I spelled it correctly), had some beautiful stuff, but it's been awhile since I've been to the site. Look in the graveyard section. Hope that helps!
There is also a beautiful silicon cake decorating mold available on Amazon and Ali Express that I have been looking at (Gothic or Retro Gate) but I don't think that's what you need here.
