SMA brake jobs never get old. Always pick up a little something from each one. Thanks, Eric.
You can’t do too many brake video it’s the delivery and entertainment we come here for and I think I pick something up from each one anyway! Thanks keep them coming we need our brake Kleen fix!!
I could watch 100 SMA brake job videos. Learn a little each time.
I think it's good that Eric O realizes that his channel will always draw new viewers as stated by his occasional opener. Sometimes as loyal viewers we forget that although we have watched all his past videos, not everyone new to SMA has done so. So I think it's important not to skip over important procedures/instructions/pointers about doing a quality brake service. Treating every video as if it was the first is an important thing to remember as new subscribers are "ringing that bell" every single day. Also, I respect Eric O's workspace so I would never call the shop unless I was booking a repair job but I think it might not be so productive to call these people, "wacky UA-camrs" since they all support your channel in one form or another. That isn't the first time I've heard that comment so I just wanted to point it out.
You can't ever overestimate the importance of cleaning/lubing the bracket and using new hardware. That's not a minor detail but the DIY crowd often overlooks it to their regret..... Once again a great video. Thank you!
What about lubing the brake pad?
the pre load is also over looked on certain suspension setups. But I agree
I've done hundreds if not thousands of brake jobs..... but I still find myself watching you do it. Great work Eric, aside from getting all that fluid film on the parking brake of course.
Going back into the extensive SMA library for a new (used) car addition to the family. Great resource and appreciated! 👍
Eric one more thing to say... the bolt for removing the caliper can be actually undone with a very flat thin spanner and finally using a long nose pliers without removing the upper control arm.Once again thank you for your videos.!!
For most that don't know about pre load is commonly over looked for the diyer. Nice welcoming video.
We had an '03 Elantra that needed an emergeny tire change; hubby (who could at that time have done it himself without thinking twice) couldn't get the wheel off; it had rusted to the wheel hub. Had to have it towed to a shop to get it done. Glad they've addressed that issue in (or before?) the '10 model.
Man your channel has really grown. You posted this 19 minutes ago, 21 comments and over 500 views already.
Hard work pays off.
and three years later its over 50000 views
Love watching your videos, and the upstate NY area. I am from Rochester so this brings back memories when you guys were towing the snowplow that tipped on it's side. I do learn a lot from watching. Keep up the great videos.
That entire rear suspension system on that gen Elantra is a pain in the butt. Not just the control arm but all those bushings which seem to always go bad.
On a positive note I could do timing belts on those all day long...Super easy and quick.
No No No..Not twice...Ohh my God...Twice...I mean Twice, This is the second best video EVER...I watched a video that you have done that had 3...Yes 3 times , the good stuff was used...I nearly made a mess after the second..But the third...Thats when I passed out.
1080p at 60fps? Damn Mr O, you're stepping your game up!
Great job!
I do the same with the adjusters...i grease them good after cleaning them out. Only difference i put a light coating of antiseize on the face of the hub and a little on the face of the drum/rotor where the wheel mounts...
Being doing it this way for almost 25 yrs now, and never had issues.
Also, i slip a little block of wood between piston and ears of the caliper and step on the pedal to force the piston out a bit and lube the sides of the piston aswell, before compressing it back into the bore. Too many times, especially on rear brakes, do i see seized calipers!
Thanks for taing the time to post these vids
... 11.20 to 11.27 ...that is exactly what they sound like . Thank you for doing what you do.
"If you're new here, welcome to our channel" I missed that from the early days, great to hear it again!!!!!!!
What a great year for the good stuff...2009...classic vintage with a hint of isoproane alcohol . Slightly cloudy and a clean texture
If you happen to be watching this vid in preparation of doing your first break job a word of advice. I have an 09 Kia Spectra and went to replace my pads and rotors. First time doing a break job. Discovered that my rear pads had seized in the brackets due to rust. Well got them out and cleaned the brackets up and put everything together. Big noob mistake right there that cost me in the long run. Rear calipers were shot from the seized pads. About 6 months later the calipers started to stick real bad and finally seized up. Rear wheel got so hot I had to have it towed to a shop. Replaced the wheel bearings too because of the heat possibly fouling them up. So if you find in yourself in a similar situation dont make the mistake I did. Lesson learned.
No matter how many 'Brake jobs' I've watched you do, Doctor O, I can't help but watch a new YT vid. Boy, I really need to get out more :(
Wow Eric. I just noticed something. You're up to 122k subscribers, congrats! Keep up the great work!
Did the rear brake pads and rotors on my daughter's MK4 Jetta last year. Put a new parking brake cable on one side. Almost put both on, since the other original looked pretty cruddy, but worked smoothly. Not even 6 mo. later, she starts dragging driver's side rear wheel (It's a 5 speed, so she uses the parking brake every day). I figured "Shame on me, I should've replaced both".....Nope. New one failed...Doorman... The cable looked like it was just handed over the counter to me, but won't budge... Advance warrantied it for me...but geez... glad I left the old crappy looking cable on the pass. side! It still works great!
What a great design, putting that control arm blocking the caliper bracket bolt.. lol 9:07 Usually it's mechanics and professional drivers who are the only ones to use the parking brake with an automatic transmission. I constantly see people who are parked on a hill, jump in, start it up, rip it out of park, and the poor park pin in the transmission makes that awful sound they always make under stress, sometimes leading to the pin failure so park no longer holds. Word of advice; when you park, engage the park brake, then put it into park, before taking your foot off the brake pedal. When getting back into the vehicle, reverse the process. Not only good for the transmission in the long run, also good for the parking brake system so it keeps working freely.
Saturday morning, SMA video, Michael Jackson impersonation, Eric, you are a man of many talents!!!
Great, now I'm going to be singing "Beat It" in my head every time I pick up a hammer.
It's OK to moon walk if you feel the need....
😂😂
Jimmy S Yeah. I can picture Eric doing the side to side shimmy too!! & don't forget the Parachute pants... 😂😂
How many cup of coffee have you had? Better switch to decaf.
I pretty much do exactly this. Remove rust from metal surfaces and lube up brackets and pins and shins on pad. Always lube parking break hardware, as this ALWAYS seems to be an issue. No lube on any bolts as it’s not necessary. And your good. Been doing it since I was 16 and I get nice even wear.
For shits sake it is BLOODY "BRAKE" NOT "BREAK" two entirely different meanings
Just one more brake job BUT it’s worth making the videos for people that won’t take the time to look at older videos.. Thanks Bro’ 👍🏻👍🏻
Another great informative vid, Mr O. Oh and I always use the parking brake in my S-Class. More out of habit from when I used to drive manual cars.
Love the brake clean intro! Thanks for taking the time to put together the videos you do.
No one is disagreeing Eric O ! Also, we expect you to say what you say every time you're over at the bench doing the brackets. I'm using your method AND product, and no one is changing my mind.
wow those rotors have a bad case of the crusties.... Great video Eric O, keep up the awesome work.
Keep up the brake jobs, they never get old:) I use your videos to do my girl's brakes:)
thank you for teach me here, really appreciate the time you take to do all the videos, I have learn a lot with you even when I am a beginner in the automotive field
I'm not trying to put anyone on blast here or use names but I was watching a video and it's sad when you didn't get credit when credit was do. Great job on diagnosing a car through a video a video.
I can't wait to get this lift set up! I'm soooo sick and tired of rolling around on the ground. It's kicking my butt! Can really tell I ain't 18 anymore. I still get the work done, and done right ... but it takes me 6x as long. Half the time is trying to get back up off the ground, lol. :D
I spray 'em all too - I just use Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector. A little spendy, but I like the way it sets up, similar to Cosmoline.
I hear you on the hard to get up and working on the ground. Always have done my own work so 15 yrs ago when I turned 50 I built a 40x32 garage with 12 walls and a lift. Made my life and working on cars a dream come true. The lift was about $2500 but when you factor in the costs of paying some one else for even a brake job now days it is paid for. Many thanks to Eric O for his skills and sharing. I found him when doing the timing belt on my subaru and confused by the 2 crank marks. Thanks again Eric for your subaru series!
you build it we destroy it - LOL, yeah pretty much! :D
Nice, William - I'm in the process of doing the same. Put a 30x26 addition on the 38' barn this fall. Problem was thanks to the -16°F temps we had in December, the water that hadn't drained out of the clay here froze, and heaved the floor up. Figures too - I was scheduled to pour the next day! So now I've got a HUGE pile of money tied up, a lift sitting outside on pallets wrapped up in a huge tarp, and no floor in the new building. Have to wait until the ground hardens up a bit (mud bog from all the freeze/thaw, snow, & rain we've got), and the ground thaws out - I'll have to get the excavation guy back here to run the compactor over it again. Until then I'm wrenching outdoors, but I've been doing that for almost 3 decades now, so not a huge deal. Biggest problem is losing money when it rains, which is nearly every day this time of year. Will sure be glad when this nightmare is behind me!!
To be honest I would be too lazy to lower the car to tighten the sway bar bushing bolts. I would live dangerously take a chance and tighten it as is. Maybe it's not a proper but that's what most of us would probably do that's why you're the expert good job.
Just did these on the GF's 2012 Elantra Touring. Awesome vid and dead nuts on. Thanks for the tips Eric!
Aw no matter how many times you do a brake show it’s always good. Thanks for sharing another outstanding show 🍻🍦☕️🥓🍩🇺🇸cheers mate.
I bought a can of fluid film and brake clean in your honor, Eric!
I've learned so much from you eric it ain't funny those earthquakes are awesome
Thank you Dentist Eric! That terrible sound when you were cleaning off the piston reminded me of one thing! The video was great and my daughter's 2013 Elantra will be getting the royal brake treatment in the near future.
The 2011 and newer Elantra uses different rear suspension. On your daughter's car, you don't have to disconnect any suspension arms, making the job a lot quicker and easier. Your daughter's car also uses a different rear caliper that has the integrated parking brake. You need to spin the piston to retract it, don't try pressing it in with channel locks.
Thank you, Nuke. I do have the tools to spin the piston to retract it, since my son-in-law owns an Audi. I appreciate you taking the time to let me know the difference in model years.
When you take it for a test drive make sure you don't give it FULL BEANS!!!!! before you try out the new brakes, Great video Eric.
The control arm is in the way! Jeez. Thanks Dr. O!
Good stuff eric O...brake job maybe routine but still needs doing properly everytime. No short cuts...
In frame 2:40, I like your Polynesian Tiki God on the wall Eric!
Good video man. Should i take the cap off the fluid reservoir before pushing calipers back??? Thanks
G'day, Mr. O! Wow!! That was really humorous! You cracked me up, using the wonderful Michael Jackson reference... "Just beat it!" Heres a pretty neat parody: If it's getting cold, reheat it. Have a nice dinner. Maybe a light snack. If you don't like it, you 'can't send it back'... Just eat it! Get yourself an egg, and beat it!! - "Weird AL"
Thank you for showing the simple task of replacing rear disc brakes on a Hyundai Elantra. (including replacement of the brake pads, rotors, cleaning, and adjusting the parking brake shoes.) Terrific job!
Cheers! :-)🛠😊❤️
It’s a good tip to give a toot of fluid film on the hand brake mechanism. It is used so infrequently and the degree of movement so small that it just asks for corrosion to seize it up.
Thanks for you time mr o' you are very helpfull and very very nice video
Great video what is that battery ratchet your using I don’t see it listed
When you were mocking people about the starwheel. I was rolling laughing.
first, got my coffee and it's the weekend, nice surprise to see SMA video on Saturday.
I guess I’m one of those rare people that use their parking brake everyday lol awesome video as always
11:15, i am going bananas, Question: Eric is there an alternative to fluid-film on the star-wheel part, special star-grease or something ?
The snapon double box end extra long 14mm wrench works pretty good without taking out the rear link arm.
Great videos. Eric I know you are heading down to Tarrytown for the TNT Training soon. Just saw a Taylor Soft Ice cream machine for sale on Craig's list for $500 in White Plains NY, 3 or 4 miles from Tarrytown Marriott. Just saying.......... keep up the great vids!!!!!
What type of media do you use in your blast cabinet? I’ve been using glass bead and it doesn’t work very well.
What kind of wrench is that at minute 2:28? Name and brand would be amazing please.
Keep those videos coming Eric O. Love it
DR. ERIC..DAME PHONE.. ALWAYS A GREAT THING... IT'S A MONEY LINE... HAVE A AWESOME WEEKEND...
Dame Phone? Is that like a booty call?
9:07 - I use my Parking Break almost every time i park Eric, unless it's completely flat. But at least once a day mine gets used.
I use mine every time I park too. So does Mrs.O.
Was one of the lessons i got when i started driving, either use it or lose it.
It's important to use, every time in fact. in some states if your car gets hit parked and it's parking brake isn't engaged and goes into someone else's property you are at fault for that damage and not the person that hit your car. Parking pawls aren't as strong as most think nor meant as the primary means to keep the vehicle stationary.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parking_pawl#/media/File:Pawl_brake_engaged.png
The parking pawl was implemented to replace the effect leaving a car parked in gear had in adding an extra security layer to keep the vehicle from rolling. With a hydo coupled automatic transmission in any gear with the engine off the transmission is effectively in neutral. So the Parking pawl restored the 'being in gear' capacity with the engine off.
@@SouthMainAuto Nice video Mr.O, Would the brake shoe gauge be better when adjusting the E-Brake? Thanks ✌
I went to school for brakes in the summer and our class had to work on this same car (it was newer car 2012 ) , it was a pain in the butt to change the pads and the rotors
Great job Eric.. Sure hope ya are wearing safety glasses when using the wire wheel.. I have had bits of wire fly off.. only have one pair of eyeballs.. thom in OZ
!!!Vintage!!! love it! ( the real stuff)
when brake clean was proper.
Great video Eric how are you feeling last time you had a sinus problems
Eric, could you inform us of the electric ratchet you use? I haven't seen it listed.
Has that Elantra been in NY its whole life? Looks pretty damn good after 7 years in the rust belt compared to some of the rustbuckets we've seen you work on.
Not quite sure why tend to they stick that caliper bracket bolt in behind the control arm. I'm guessing that road salt isn't as much of a thing in Korea and the engineers don't really anticipate having to replace the rotors all the time when changing the pads. Sort of like those old Japanese cars with the captive rotors I imagine.
Nice Breakleem!!😉😉sweet old but goody. Hell yeah!!
another excellent video, can't get enough of them brake jobs! lol
grate video Eric oh and for the record ha ha I always use my E brake on my focus wagon when im parked in my driveway LOL
Yep, before I got one of those impactscrewsdrivers I just drilled out the screws on the rotors. they rust quite good and are often soft as icecream...
So when you use stainless steel hardware, you don't have to put lube on the ears of the pads? (I see you put lube underneath the hardware for corrosion mitigation). I guess it will attract sand and dust etc.
The Best Rattle - 10:14 - Fluid Film
and 19:35
OMG you just let that caliber hang by the hose are you crazy you just broke it lol good job buddy
Nicegloves, are they impacted shielded? How your personal review on that 1/2 inch hf. Cordless
Need to do the classic reach around on them Hyundai brakes!
Free tip Teusday on a Saturday. I am getting ready to put up my first ever scope video on testing narrow band knock sensor off the vehicle.
You probably want answer but the dust shield is it a big job to remove i have a 2013 elantra
Eric O. 2009 Chevy Malibu with U2143 SAS module code affecting tc. I just replaced the electronic steering control unit and that took away the steering wheel from shaking. Any thoughts? Did I get another bad unit. From researching it says that sensor is located within the unit I installed. Always something!
Hey Eric, what type of a sandblaster setup do you have? Keep up the great content
Hey there Eric. Welcome back to my phone screen!
Tip: Ever find yourself being ever living snot out of the rotor to get it off and notice she is loose but just won't slide all the way off? Depending on how heavily rusted your parking brake drum is you may have to back the parking brake star off some being a rust lip may have formed on the outer most lip of the drum.
Do you turn brake rotors? Or do you recommend new rotors at every brake job?
hey Eric, what happen to the 2004 hondu with wrong timing mark on the crankshaft? No video part 3 and after? Do you still have the van in your shop?
Was wondering your tool love scale rating for your Knipex pliers? Just got my 10 inch cobras and i love em. Almost as much as I luv these vids Dr.
from 1 to 10... I give them an 11
Are the 2014 Hyundai rear brake identical in construction?
The beginning of this video reminded me to ask- I am planning to buy a HF Earthquake electric 3/8" ratchet; how much force (torque) will it handle when removing a fastener in just non-electric mode? It's not really a "breaker bar" right? And how much torque does it have tightening in electric and non-electric mode? Thank you for responses, Folks!
I dunno what the spec is but I have pushed on it to what I would figure to be about 80-90ft lbs... I am thinking it was all she wanted. Just have to choke up on so you don't push on the battery. Might find that info in the book, assuming they have one :)
Here we go---> manuals.harborfreight.com/manuals/63000-63999/63538.pdf (About midway through screen)Battery Rating 12 V / 2.0 Ah
Battery Type Li-ion
Drive Size 3/8″
Maximum Torque 60 ft-lb
Speed 0-170 RPMA) Loosening: Break hardware loose manually,
then squeeze throttle slowly to remove
hardware. release throttle when finished.
B) Tightening: Squeeze throttle slowlyto apply hardware, then release
throttle and fully tighten manually.
Note: The amount of actual torque will vary depending
on the cleanness and condition of the threads andother factors. If tightening critical components,
chase threads before assembling components and
check the actual torque applied to the fastener
with a mechanical torque wrench (not supplied). It's even got a nifty AvE friendly diagram of parts.
See so I was right thinking that the 80 or so I applied took it right to the edge. Good guess, AVE Would be proud of me!
LOL i pissed myself laughing when you took the micky out of the moaning commenters, so funny :-D.
Watching you do more brakes isn't boring, yes i get reminded how to do the job, but you have a personality and a good sense of humor, it really makes a difference.
I watch eric the car guy too, personality with skill.
Some people are so emotionless/boring, it does not make a good teacher.
Eric with an "O" should have a warning label attached when doing his brake jobs.
Wouldn't call anything Eric the car guy does as skilled.
Shain Andrews Yeah, like to remind people that he, Eric the Car Guy, ground down the ears of a pair of brake pads in one video. In another he welded on a ball joint. Though the latter he did eventually go back and put in the right ball joint. But, still, yeesh, Eric O would never do that.
Very nice guy, but yeah, Eric O. is definitely more skilled as a tech and mech. ETCG is more of a UA-cam personality and mech. I've never seen someone that has the diagnosis skills Eric O. does.
Cliff Pierce
Yes you are right, Eric o is red hot with the technical side of computer communication and diagnostics, and a mechanic.
EricTheCarGuy is mostly a mechanic, but im sure he can use a scanner, but not as deep as Eric o.
Both are really nice people, i can't be negative about them.
I put new pads and rotors in both my ELANTRA s in front and after driving a while, they start grinding before coming to a complete stop, what would cause that
Well done easy brother 😁 thanks
*@**19:50* Plastic washers under the lug nuts- great idea!
Eric! question for you, I have a veloster and a Ram 1500, my piston winder was just a bit too large for the veloster, took way too long to wind the piston back, what do you think of those cheapo cube adapters for home games only using them once every three or four years?
Those little square blocks work just fine IMO
Are you on south main in Rockford Illinois
New drinking game... take a shot every time Eric says toot
how do you like that earthquake angle rachet compared to a milwaukee?
Give them a toot..lol that and your brake cleaner make me laugh .. good video
Another fine brake video Mr. O! I kind of miss seeing the Astro Nanos in your videos though. I am glad the Harbor Freight is working fine (so far).
Thanks for all the great videos Eric. What type of media do you use in your sand blaster?
"black beauty"
Love those 'A' style air coupler ;)
