Just had my mechanic do this repair today, because I didn't want to attempt pulling the lower control arm loose in my garage. The 2013 model is an absolute PITA! APPARENTLY they decided to farm out the caliper design & the suspension design to two different teams! Love the videos buddy!
Eric, this was an awesome video. I wish you had this video out a year ago when I did the rear brakes on my 09 Sonata. You made it look effortlessly easy. Thanks again
I changed my brake shoes on my Hyundai Genesis coupe not long ago. Same exact format…took me a while to figure it out but got them in properly, adjusted them properly and now it holds my back wheels 🛞 real still when I apply the parking brakes. Love it.
I was doing some research about my cruise control and your video was hanging around. I took a break from my studies to watch and clear my mind. I can use a laugh, I'll check out his channel. Thanks for all the help, I enjoyed the campfire talks.

I live in Georgia now, but used to live in Bath, Ny and went right past your shop on my way visiting family. Anyway, just wanted to mention what a pleasure it is working on southern vehicles ! But that vehicle from Canada looks great from having it coated! Thanks for the always informative videos!
I've done a bunch of Ford Expedition parking brake shoe jobs that never needed shoes at all - just needed that linkage up top freed up out of a block of rust. One truck I had to remove both, and toss them in my waste oil bucket for a few hours, then stick them in the vice and beat the everlivin' snot out of them. Looked like a lost cause for a minute, but I got them both workin as good as new again. Good to see someone that takes care of their vehicle - makes our lives a million times easier. I'd do pretty good if everyone did that! Off I go, back into the tropically humid shop ... 😁
Another great job Eric. A lot of anti-seize requested by your customer. Think about it anti-seize is made by combining grease and copper or nickle dust. When used on exhaust bolts or other very hot fasteners I think the idea is the grease goes but a thin film of a dissimilar metal remains. Because the fastener was essentially torqued "lubricated" the breakout torque can be considerably more once say plain oil has burned off. What I'm trying to say is that if you used a good quality grease like a full synthetic on non-heated parts it would be a lot less messy and just as effective. Your an excellent mechanic and teacher and as always look forward to your new videos. Thanks
One trick I learned when doing drum or drum parking brakes, is to put the drum or rotor over the shoes. Then for old drum brakes, push on the brake pedal. That will center the shoes so you can adjust them. For parking brake shoes, pull up or push on the parking brake lever or pedal. Same result. The shoes will center themselves. Works pretty good also when adjusting the shoe clearance.
Thanks to your video I had the confidence to rip into my kids 2007 Scion Tc to replace the parking brake shoes. After 3 adjustments got them working safely and securely. Love your videos. Thank you again.
Eric, my SMA coffee cup arrived yesterday. All I need is a matching Snuggie and I'm set for a weekend of binge watching your videos. Thanks for making the cups available.
Eric, Another great and educational video. I NEVER get tired of watching you do brake jobs - or anything else! BTW I think Ken Block drives a Fiesta - not a Focus. I know, to you it is just a Ford 'whatever' LOL. God bless to you and Hannah Paul
Another fine job with some great tips. The Advance Auto Parts store in my area has had the the brake clean buy one get one free. I think I’m up to ten cans now.
I'm from Canada and I always wheezy wheel the shoes' contact points (and put silver never seize). Like you once said, "a little never seize goes a LONG way".
YAY! a parking Brake Video...rare to see any on youtube...Nice to see rust proofing mentioned as well,..I get my Fiesta Sprayed from Krown as well......going to do it when I get my Challenger SRT 392 soon... those 6 piston Brembo with the 2 pc rotors is going to be "fun".....
'Up , out, threads to the back.' ... saved me some trial and error, Tks. Both my brake backing plates rusted out so I have the new stuff ready for bench assembly. Could not figure it out.
Today I spent 2 hours with only one side of my Kia Optima, 😂😂😂 it’s a little different from the one in the video but in the end I was able to do it for the first time.
Awesome vid, I have the same exact situation but have been wary of replacing the shoes. Will give it a try because hey, if you can do it I can do it! ;)
You just reminded me I have to do mine and I'm not surprised he comes down from Canada to you! I'd be crossing the pond to you if there was a car ferry 😂
Hi from Missouri. Worked replacing rear brakes on a 6 year old Subaru WRX today. The car came from Pennsylvania, wow that car had rust! Broke off a caliper bolt first thing, bolt popped loose made a full turn and then broke. On the others when the bolt popped loose I then soaked it with panther pee and ran it back in and out a couple of times. I never have problems with caliper bolts on Missouri cars.
rebuilt the front end of a John Deere L110 mower this morning and I used brake clean on that job. My can doesn't make that noise it must be a faulty can
I think I can speak for most everyone here. I can't even look at a can of brake clean without thinking of you. I hope you are happy. Good Job with the videos thanks
Excellent video. Seems nothing under there changed from the 2006 - 2008 model years. In my case, about to do this on a 2008. The pad material fell off the backing pad at around 230k. Not bad. Barely used the parking brake in NJ.
I’ve actually got the spring done now, but now I’ve fitted everything back together, I can’t move the rotor disc around. It is so tough when I put the screwing any ideas?
Great video. I am working on a 2011 Sonata. It has 3 brake springs for the parking brake. One is on the top, side to side, a second one on the bottom, side to side, then the third goes behind the brake shoes, but from the middle to the side. I didn't notice the spring when I took off the shoes and now I am guess on which way the spring goes. On the passenger side, does it go from the middle towards the back (left)? And on the drivers side, does it go from the middle towards the back also (right)? What is strange, I have a service manual but it doesn't show the third spring. But all of the hardware kits I have looked at, it has the 3 springs. Any ideas? Thanks....
Eric, how did you learn to work on vehicles, specifically diagnosing electrical components? I'm looking for a way to speed-up my learning curve but don't know where to look. Any advice is appreciated. BTW, thank you for creating your channel. I found it not long ago, and binge watch your videos.
probably could have blasted brake cleaner in the adjuster hole and drove around dragging the e-brake on and off... usually surface rust and road schmutz make them not hold good, that and willy-nilly "coating" inside the rotor drum, which did look awfully new!
Fantastic video and thanks for sharing just what I was looking for, but what is the gray stuff you put with a little brush on it, regards and for sure I will be looking for more videos from you in future repairs.
Just at it here today. I think my problem is not the shoes but the linkage after the cable joins the bracket that moves back and forth. Those are the rusty seized up parts. Outside the drum and going into the drum. I think you called it the actuator assembly.
Thanks for sharing your fantastic video my amigo very nice explain and clear too, you save me money and time with your nice tips, but what is the grey stuff you put on it name please, regards and be safe.
Watched one of your videos a while back were you were talking about hand tools that you recommended as quality for the money from singapour maybe - i think they used green for their color? Wandering what was the brand name if you recall the video i'm referring to. Thanks

Did the harbor freight ratcheting wrench give up
Instablaster
I been driving with the parking brakes on!! Is that gonna bring damages to the car??

I feel the Ken block reference made the video that much better than what it already was. Love this channel

Mr. Apparently is one cool kid! Not nervous, just having a lot of fun! He's funny!
Hell of a mechanic sir. As one my self, I look up to your standards

Your the only guy I could find on youtube who does my car. Well done mate.
Eric, my SMA coffee cup arrived yesterday. All I need is a matching Snuggie and I'm set for a weekend of binge watching your videos. Thanks for making the cups available.
You had me worried no brake clean music but then you came through, anyway great video Dr.O until next time PEACE.
Eric O flipped us all off. I like your style
Oh man, I was hoping you'd get all "whizzy" wit it. lol Thanks Dr. O!
Gimme a parking brake!.....Enjoyed watching you work on the Sonata from Canata
Thanks Eric for all the videos! I am a new subscriber to your channel and I have learned a lot from all of them. Keep up the good work!
You made that drum reassembly look easy. I've always hated doing drum brakes.
Eric, thanks for the great tips on parking brake change. Great idea on filling the parts cleaner with "Brake Cleaner"
Eric,
Another great and educational video. I NEVER get tired of watching you do brake jobs - or anything else! BTW I think Ken Block drives a Fiesta - not a Focus. I know, to you it is just a Ford 'whatever' LOL.
God bless to you and Hannah
Paul
'Apparently' you may be correct on the Focus.
Nope you are the correct one :( Hey at least I got the Ford part correct haha
Thank you for posting this video!! I just replaced my parking brake shoes using your video!
“Try not to get your fingers in your never seize”. Words of wisdom right there.
Another fine job with some great tips. The Advance Auto Parts store in my area has had the the brake clean buy one get one free. I think I’m up to ten cans now.
Done this today on a hyundai ix35/tuscon, very helpful video thanks for taking the time to make and upload
Eric O nice vid no rust belt rust By the way Discovery Channel hopefully will be getting in touch
You are genius. I just learn how to adjust my KIAs parking brake. I have changed rotors last week but did not adjust PBrake. Cheers.
I'm from Canada and I always wheezy wheel the shoes' contact points (and put silver never seize). Like you once said, "a little never seize goes a LONG way".
It's always a great start to the day when I wake up to a new video. Got muh glazed donuts getting washed down by Dunkin's iced coffee
man you are doing great job I wish we have mechanic here like you, thank you for share the video
Thanks for sharing, Eric. Enjoyed the live chat last night!
Perfect video Eric. Was going to do my parking break tomorrow :)
Good job you always make it look easy but it isn’t keep up the great work

What a great detailed explanation in nonboring video. Thanks boss !!
ThNks bro for this video it was helpful best regards from libya 🇱🇾
Thank you for the video clip very clear and good sense of hummer in between as a bonus..cheers mate
great video. Not too much unrelevant chatter, good quick tips in sequential order.
One day I'll be just as good as you with your diag skills
This was exactly what i needed to learn. Thank you.
Ken Block is one crazy driver!
'Up , out, threads to the back.' ... saved me some trial and error, Tks. Both my brake backing plates rusted out so I have the new stuff ready for bench assembly. Could not figure it out.
Very nice, tahank you very much. Greetings from Finland.

Awesome vid, I have the same exact situation but have been wary of replacing the shoes. Will give it a try because hey, if you can do it I can do it! ;)
It’s not too bad just do one side at a time so if you mix up the springs and what not you can look at the other side.
Assuming the other side has been done right ;)
You just reminded me I have to do mine and I'm not surprised he comes down from Canada to you! I'd be crossing the pond to you if there was a car ferry 😂
Nice simple straight forward video. Thank you.
You make it look really easy, awesome job bro
South Main Brake Jobs
Another great job Eric O.
..good job, you make it look so easy..
Bob Joncas first you get good then you get fast :)
hi, thanks for your video, its easy and informative , its the same procedure for my kia sorento mk1, so thanks again, cheers from UK.
Well, "apparently" Eric just flipped us the bird. Ha ha ha
Love the vidoes eric o funny down to earth, keep up the great work.
Thanks for video recommendations...needed a laugh after my day😄😄
EHT Brake pads. Those are what I use. I love those pads.

Fantastic use of the rare, brake clean fake out!!! Not easy to pull off wearing a Jeep hat!!
Good video Eric and hi to Hannah.
Great video as always! Keep it up
Funny stuff at 3:41 when explaining which finger to use.
Rocko Mocko good instructions huh
Hell yeah great instructions from a great teacher.
Great video, as usually. I am though replacing the hardware, springs etc. - and it is incredibly hard to extend the new upper spring.
Wished the 2012 Sonata was as easy. One caliper mounting bolt covered up by upper control arm. Lucky you have the 09 Sonata to work on.
Great timing for this video since I have to replace my back brakes and it will be my first time. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Truly excellent video. Many thanks!
Nice video Eric. Thanks!
nice clean job.....I think there is a cable adjuster on the apply lever
wow so pro mecanic , tks , hi from romania !
rebuilt the front end of a John Deere L110 mower this morning and I used brake clean on that job. My can doesn't make that noise it must be a faulty can
Shake it harder...
I think I can speak for most everyone here. I can't even look at a can of brake clean without thinking of you. I hope you are happy. Good Job with the videos thanks
They make some great noise when you toss them into a fire. 😁
how much newton meter to torque those back fasteners of that whole brake assembly?
Excellent video. Seems nothing under there changed from the 2006 - 2008 model years. In my case, about to do this on a 2008. The pad material fell off the backing pad at around 230k. Not bad. Barely used the parking brake in NJ.
Hi ive got a kia optima and cant get the top spring back on and more tips and tricks please
I’ve actually got the spring done now, but now I’ve fitted everything back together, I can’t move the rotor disc around. It is so tough when I put the screwing any ideas?
Another great job my friend

wondering the same. on a 2015 HSH I have one little screw "left over" :/ did you find you how it's supposed to be installed?
Have you seen Ken Block's 1965 4WD Mustang in Los Angles? AWESOME!
great job. thank you for all the tips
Ah, some brake clean to start out the hump day!
Another great how to video!
Nothing says awesome like a car that has 3 different sets of pads/shoes ;-)
And 2 different sized wiper blades???
I had no idea Ted Cruz worked on cars! For real though, great video!
Nice job Eric

Call AES Wave, talk to Carlos and tell him you'd like to get some ATG books. Best self study books I know of!
Poor Carlos is going to get a SMA wave of calls now and not know what hit him or where did all these calls come from. :)
Just tell him Eric O @SMA sent ya, he will know ;)
+South Main Auto Repair you need to make dvds
Which digit do I use again when I can't use my cup tool again? Ohh you said to use this one "🖕" correct? 🤣🤣😂😂 LOL....
Nice to work on something without all the rust and crust
probably could have blasted brake cleaner in the adjuster hole and drove around dragging the e-brake on and off... usually surface rust and road schmutz make them not hold good, that and willy-nilly "coating" inside the rotor drum, which did look awfully new!
Great video eric
Great video thanks 👍👍👍
Fantastic video and thanks for sharing just what I was looking for, but what is the gray stuff you put with a little brush on it, regards and for sure I will be looking for more videos from you in future repairs.
I wonder if Krown oil might have contaminated the e brake shoes causing the slippage.
Jeff Berg I always thought that...
Eric, will you show us how you modified your box to support the end lockers?
God Bless u man! Thank u for this video!
thank you soo mutch for this video!
