I've been waiting for decades for this HD version of the full final match - thank you sooo much !!
Same for me.
It's not actually HD. It's the standard picture quality in countries that used the PAL TV system back then (Australia and most of Europe). North America used the NTSC system, which had noticeably worse picture quality.
Mats was so calm. Both of these guys were gentlemen of tennis. After hitting a winner or two, they didn't pump their fist, scream wildly, or point to their ear .
Even McEnroe, with all his tantrums, and Ilie Nastase before him, would now be seen as gentlemen!
He was calm because the match is calm. Do they even sweat? I miss them running around the court and give 100% every point 5 hours long. Thats what it takes nowadays and I like it more ofcourse. Nostalgia is something different tham quality of game!
@@wouter4052 seriously, you have no idea.
Pat Cash was the best volleyer of the era and he proves that all through the match. Wilander had the superior tennis brain and stamina. Great tennis. Equipmentwise, players nowadays have a lot of control and power that wasn't available back then. Players like Cash and Wilander secured a great future for for tennis. Show some respect.
Great final and Mats 1st of 3 majors for the year also taking the no 1 ranking. Awesome champion. 👍
A classic Wilander match - he knew that the longer the match went on, the better his chances. He could outlast almost anybody. He really was the marathon man of tennis.
Mats was mentally very very strong
I like this version of Mats. He returns so well, good at serve-volley and also giving some of those groundies a good thump. It makes one realise what a great strategist he was. Later this year he beats Lendl at the USO by really slowing the game right down. 1988 was his year: Aus, French and USO.
And Lipton, Key Biscane.
He had beaten Lendl at the 1988 US Open "by really slowing the game right down"? Well, in that match Wilander came to the net even more than here at the Australian Open. Or do you mean that he was slowing the game down by taking a lot of time between service points? He in fact did that - as almost always...
Indeed my fav. athlete of all time
Wilander has said that he and Cash ended the day taking a beer together...
Wilander has said that he and Cash ended the day taking a beer together...
source?
@@iggypopisgod9 I've heard Wilander himself talk about it a couple of times. I think it was some sort of random thing. Wilander and his team happened to be on the same place as Cash and his team. I don't remember exactly what he said. :)
I recently saw a show where Cash was a guest and he talks about this
@@rh_stI remember this. He said Cash was gutted because if he won it would have been particularly special, as it was the Australian bicentenary that year.
I kind of forgot what a great volleyer Pat Cash was. Incredible play at the net. Stunningly beautifully placed volleys. Back when tennis was fun to watch!
Physicallity en level nowadays is much higher then in the past. Plus the quality of recording and broadcasting those matches is superb. But nostalgia huh?😅
@@wouter4052 you think we can't enjoy the greatest players playing in the past? or that unless it is 4k we can't enjoy it? using nostalgia as a pejorative? I feel sorry for you. Any player today can learn technique watching Cash's incredible volleys, as just one example.
What a year Mats had in '88. Beat an Aussie to win the AO. Beat a Frenchman to win the FO. Beat a future American to win the USO.
Perfect conclusion 😅
What a time that was!.wanna grow up once again in 90s. Just a simple tv ,togather with my family tatz mom bro and neibhours watching tis was just pleasure.40 now,but life is boring and monotonuos.
Best of luck in learning the English language and learning how to spell, r e t a r d
Great upload. Brings back bittersweet memories. So sad for Cash. He had this game won more than once!
This is a real masterpiece, especially the 5th set where the 2 players played together at an incredible level of intensity. Of course Cash could have won on his homeland, he was so impressiv and moved like a jaguar on the court. But Mats was just a little better this time with his perfectly balanced game in 1988. Thanks for sharing
I was a student at Purdue University watching this late at night with my buddy. He was a huge Wilander fan and I was a huge Cash fan. Had a nice bet on the match that I ended up losing. Man, was I pissed when Cash lost this.
Great year for the best version of Mats.
No more only a simple baseliner, but a complete player able to play on the net.
3/4 of Slam that year !
Mats Wilander said that this was possibly the most important win of his career. He felt he'd been lucky to win, but it gave him the confidence that took him to three grand slams in 1988. In 1987 he'd lost three big finals to Lendl - the French, US snd tour finals, and this was the boost he needed.
Cash volleys are from another planet
This was the year when AO went Hard Court, with the Rebound Ace (since replaced).
I think Wilander won this match like he won so many others. By being physically fitter at the end. Cash looked physically tired but Wilander sailed on. He knew that if it was going to be a marathon, he was going to win.
I ve read that Wilander worked physically before 1988 to get more power. I am not able to see à significant difference in this match. I am more impressed by Cash athletical skills !
Great match! Great Mats! He was the first player ever with a natural two handed topspin backhand to also develop a one handed slice. His change came in only one year, from -82 to -83. Huge difference between those two years. In fact he was not far from no 1 in -83, winning nine tornaments including AO, also Roland G runner up. Now every two handed top player has those shots as a necessary and effective combo. Prove med wrong 😂
It's weird that Stefanos Tsitsipas, a one hander, can't even hit a decent slice backhand himself.
Mats, quel classe dans son jeu et dans la victoire
Those were the days when the finals were held in the middle of the day!
That's because it was never over 100F at any of the Open sites on the court.
@@asnark7115 Wrong, it was even hotter sometimes. They changed it due to broadcasting.
Fantastic volleying from Cash. He takes most volleys quite deep/ low but with an incredible touch. Have to give credit for Wilander, too though I liked the playing style of Cash much more.
Modern pro players should learn to volley like Cash, Edberg, Sampras.
@@miguelbarahona6636 add Becker and Mac
@@miguelbarahona6636 Lol modern players have to handle 2000X more spin and pace
@@-music2023shut up you z nobody!
@@-music2023 the modern players enjoy the benefits of modern racquet technology and ultra slow courts. Different story if the modern players has these racquets from the '80's and played on these much faster courts.
Very much looking forward to watching this. Once had this match on horrible VHS tape. Wish DVD recorders were around pre 2000.
Oh yes, 80s / 90s matches in HD quality like this would have been a dream
Le nombre de fautes directes est impressionnant. De nos jours, il n'y en a quasiment plus dans les grands tournois. Le matériel et la technique ont considérablement évolué.
3:39:33 maybe the point of the match
Every now and again when l need a boost l watch this match or parts of it and admire its brilliance and enjoy its ending all over again. Mats' all court play as he nears his career peak is 👌 ..🏆 🏆 🏆
This was a fantastic match! Thanks for providing it.
Amazing match. Well done Mats 👏👏👏
1988 a été la meilleure année de Mats ! Un très bon joueur et très fairplay !! Mon joueur préféré jusqu’en 1989 ! Ensuite ce fut l’avènement Sampras ! 💜💜
Great match, great Mats😍😍😍
Both players respected each other.
For Pat Cash, this was something of an end. His career was blighted by injury and he only got to one grand slam quarter final after this.
Within 1975-2003, only Mats Wilander can achieve 3 Slam in a ATP season.
Here it is at last! Thanks AO Channel.
Watching this don't you miss serve and volley tennis? I know I do. SO much more attractive to watch than all those so called 'counter punchers' we have to put up with nowadays 😞 I'll take a Pat Cash / Max Cressy kind of player over a thousand djokovices any day!
quelle comparaison idiote, stupide est sans aucune réalité tennistique
1987 Wimbledon final : Cash def. Lendl
1987 US Open final: Lendl def. Wilander
1988 Australian Open final: Wilander def. Cash
😮😮😮
The punch volley has gone the way of the dodo. 99% of all volleys now are drop or drive volleys, which annoy me to no end.
I've used that Prince Magnesium racquet Pat Cash used. Good memories.
BG said...." Greatest weapon in tennis is Mats Wilanders mind.
Always ask one question. What happened to Mats after 1988?He was only 24 in 1988 and had all sport life ahead.
So sad.
He had reached his goals and was sated. He got more interested in the parts of life that don't involve tennis.
Mats' game depended on 100% mental focus and strategic thinking. After becoming world nr 1 briefly I think he just lost the mental drive and motivation.
3:14:25 SCORE
This was a great year for wilander he won three of the four grand slams except Wimbledon. He would not win anymore slams after this year.
Interesting to watch given those racquets are strung with basically fishing line! No poly or multi strings yet, this was the hardest they could hit the ball - wonderful to watch both players strategising around a lack of pace. Not hard to see where the game was about to go in the early 90s
Wonderful stuff. Boy pat coukd volley, and matts seemingly doing nothing outstanding yet being altogether outstanding!
Cashy not being a baseline cost him many matches. A pity his coaches didn't work on that aspect.
Didn't hurt edberg
@@MeMe-td1yeOr Becker
Becker and Edberg grew up on claycourts, so they were quite competent from the baseline. that's the difference. @@SimonFranck100
@@SimonFranck100 Becker was very good baseliner for serve and volley actually. He actually won a lot of points from baseliner like Lendl (although he had little luck against Agassi trying this way).
Barely a handshake from Cash. Much better sportsmanship these days.
I always thought who would win. Pat cash v pat rafter if they were in the same decade and also top form. Who would have won you think.??.
Shame that back then all we got on TV in the UK was Wimbledon and nothing else.
Cash’s serve was his biggest weakness. 🇦🇺
At that time, Mats had a great volley☝️🙄👌
At that time Mats was the .1
Mats always had a great volley, it was just not his more natural game but did really great with after let's say 1984. Gosh we're old 😅
In 1987, and especially during 1988, he also had some speed on the ball.
If you look at Wilander's matches in 1989 and after, it is obvious that he lost speed on the ball, too much roll on the forehand side and too many defensive slices on the backhand side.
Here he plays at a higher tempo and with pressure and speed in the strokes.
Already in the fall of 1988, during the US open, he started using the slice backhand as the norm and the rolled backhand only as a compliment.
He still hit the double-hander about 70% of the time later in his career. He just wasn't the same player anymore. @@FredrikAndersson597
Isn't it great how they casually shake hands at the end. None of that gushing, throw yourself to the ground like you've just survived World War 2 nonsense ;-)
Was this the first year od Flinders park?
1988.
Yes
A live score would not go astray
The court tv image looks like a game of Ping Pong in the 70s pub 'entertainment'.
Sad mats got snowed in after 1988
In his own words, he realized there was more to life than tennis
I think on grass Cash would have won , but they preferred to change surface.
3:41:03 Cmon, its in ! Mats watched closely, but...
until this event Ao has weakest field among slam
Cash always had lovely legs
Incredibly handsome
I feel sorry for Cash. So close before his home crowd.
And Cash was often very strong. If he had had a good day here and Mats a bad one...(I notice now I respond to my own comment :) )
3:41:06 ..... the ball was clearly in. Hawk eye please ;-)
Actual playing time 5 minutes
Australian Open tour with @'al back sweet honey ....
Last time (Possibly) a non-graphite racquet made a GS final.
I believe the racket was the prince magnesium, mid size.
@@ericselstad8257 I think Cedric Pioline made a US Open final with the same racket, it had a white paint job.
Hey pat did you ever recover from the jack 😅😅😅😅😅
back when tennis had actual variety.
now its robot central, every man and his dog a baseline basher
Pat Cash racket looks like its from Wal Mart
Prince magnesium, mid size.
Horrible line calls
