🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

YOUR IN SRILANKA? I WANNA MEET AND SHOW YOU AROUND? at least take a pic with you goddamnn
When are you coming back to Kenya?
I think you should release a video explaining why you think it is appropriate to do a food review series in Sri Lanka under these circumstances.
This is not implying that you are doing a good or a bad thing, but there is a need to discuss this.
I am so grateful for this opportunity to work alongside Sonny and his team. Sri Lanka is a melting pot of diverse cultures that has influenced our cuisine. The very first cuisine i wanted Sonny to try is pure authentic Sinhalese influenced food, also our staple diet as Sri lankans, which is rice and curry. We discussed alot about each curries, such as young jack fruit (polos) and hog plum curry (as seen in the end credits) and mallums e.t.c but clearly the winner was the Jack fruit curry and black pork curry which are unique dishes to Sri lanka and very popular amongst locals. This was such a fun day with Sonny and the team also with Chef Dharshana, who is the King of Sri lankan mud crabs. If you are a street food lover, Colombo city night life wins that category. Please visit Sri Lanka on your next holiday.. our beautiful island awaits you! 🙏🏽🇱🇰❤️🙂
Chef Darshana seemed like a very kind soul. And you had a great sense of humor about all the ribbing by Sonny about pork. Great job.
Definitely made me want to visit Sri Lanka! The people seem (as you put it) innocent, but I am glad they are able to achieve political movement through protest.
The food looks amazing! Are there any other foods you'd recommend?
Can't wait to visit when I've got the funds!

I am a Sri Lankan. I am proud that you have come to our country in the face of the economic crisis that our country has fallen into. Also, I invite all foreigners who watch your videos to come to our country to watch and have fun.
This series brought me so much joy. I went to Sri Lanka for a month in the summer of 2018, volunteering for that duration as well as traveling and exploring. The culture, the food and just everything about Sri Lanka while I was there has been one of the most unforgettable and amazing experiences I've ever had. I'm happy that there is a Sri Lankan restaurant near me where I can experience a portion of the amazing food I had there and I hope to go back soon. Dear Sonny,
You are doing us a great help at this time.
As a Sri Lankan, I really appreciate your support.
May you always be successful!
To all of the world watching out there, this series only covers only a teeny tiny bit of the massive vibrant food culture in Sri Lanka. There are so many otherworldly flavors and textures hidden within our island in all directions with all of the people, not within just the hills and the north! . Come explore, find more! ❤️
Obviously no one can eat everything from every country. All people are different and eat different things lol
I have watch many YT food vlogers going various countries but all in all I see the Sri Lanka people as the most humble down to earth people, their generosity, such a welcoming people, what a blessed people. One day I'll visit Sri Lanka. I don't have anything to help but with all sincerity I'll pray for my Sri Lankan brethren. With manner and respect, greetings form Northeast India. CutPut A Shatsang.
I agree to that.. let's pray for them. I love Lankans ❤

Really appreciate it. ❤✌🙏🇱🇰
I am amazed by the humbleness, kindness and smartness of Ruzaina... she can talk about food politics culture etc with deep understanding and knowledge.
It’s home 🥺~ chef. Most people I meet in Sri Lanka though they have the chance to go and live abroad, they choose to stay back and that just makes me think how humble these people are. They love their land and I just love it. Keep fighting for a brighter Sri Lanka 💪🏼
man its an island, and a long way to swim to the nearest country.... if it was land bound, then it would have been different... then again, the culture is unique and the land is so fertile, fresh water lakes, rivers, reservoirs all over the country, who in their right mind would want to leave this country? only fools leave hoping they can have better life elsewhere... you got to see to believe, you don't really need money to live and survive in this country.
@@rajwarnakulasuriya1906 Who in the right mind swims across country nowadays. Also I don’t think even landlocked countries simply allow migration without some legal implications. I’m not saying that the country doesn’t have fertile land or anything,I’m talking about people who have better job opportunities and though they get offered to work somewhere else, most of them simply don’t migrate because Lanka is their home. Fertile land and fresh water sources are good but the whole population is not surviving just based on farming, those factors were favorable in ancient days when civilization occurred but who in this century goes looking for fertile soil. Wake up Raj
I am from Sri Lanka thank you all for respecting us.
Sri Lanka will get through this and bounce back. Sri Lankans have been through so much, and are resilient people. Stay strong, Sri Lanka 💪🙏 🇱🇰

The Sri Lankan version of Biryani looks moist & not dry like some other versions. Would love to have the Sri Lankan version. I would also love to have their roti
That was not actually a biriyani, it was a spring hopper kottu afaik. I think they did a miatake. Sri Lankan biriyani isn't that different to mainland biriyanis.
Its string hopper biriyani but the regular biriyani is similar to Pakistan or Indian but with the sri lankan touch of flavour.
That definitely wasn’t a biriyani but as you said, it is a string hopper koththu.
We pronounce it Buriyani

I’ve been big fan of Sonny and his team for a long time. He makes the most unique & interesting videos. He opened my eyes and broadened my mind about other countries, their cultures and very different cuisines. I love how he presents his content in a respectful and non judgemental way. Watching my country Sri Lanka being featured on his channel really made me happy and proud. In a time where we're in a crisis and people are struggling to get by each day, this certainly puts a smile on your face. What's best about our people is that we still try to see the positive and enjoy even with what little we have. We're the kind to party while the ship is sinking. We will fight for freedom and we will help whoever when it's needed.
So thanks for coming here and showing the world what a beautiful nation we are. We welcome everyone with open hearts and a warm cuisine. No tourist will starve even how badly the news shows the crisis is happening, cz we're really getting better these days.
I hope Sonny goes out of Colombo to show our village cuisines as well cz that's where you will find some of the most unique, authentic Sri Lankan food.

1:53 fun fact: In the Bengal region of India and Bangladesh unripped jackfruit is considered a delicacy. In Bengali it is called 'Gachh-Pantha'; 'Gachh' means tree and 'Pantha' means goat or in this case, mutton. Because if it is cooked correctly; it can rival the mutton curry in texture and taste.
In Sri Lanka, it's some times called "Gas Kukula", or tree chicken!
Forget the food... Ruzaina is breathtaking ❤️

The electricity was cut during noon and night and the amount of hours increased the more days I stayed there. It went from 2-3 hours over to 5 hours. March/April are the hottest months of the year reaching 40-45 degrees Celsius, so the lack of ceiling fan made it really hard, especially since I came from a country that had winter that had -4 degrees Celsius. There were also people in trucks who stood in queues that were miles long just to get gas. I heard a mother threatened to jump if she didn't get baby formula since the inflation made prices reach 3-5 times their original ones and kept increasing every day so the mother couldn't afford anymore. Luckily the police got her down by offering some baby formula. I also think I heard that some parts of Colombo had electricity shut down, which was unusual at the time and the people weren't prepared compared to those who live in towns and villages. So many of those who lived in Colombo went from door to door begging for water. Those who live in towns and villages started farming and grew their own rice and started trading with rice too. From what I heard, Tamil people who mostly live in towns/villages seemed to fare better than Singalam people who mostly live in urban areas since the Tamil have had more experience with oppression. Might remember it wrong, but a lot was happening so it's hard to remember it all. Not trying to start a war in the comment section, but trying to provide what information/personal experiences I have regarding the situation in Sri Lanka.
I guess Singalam is the main 'Sri Lankan' ethnicity, and Malayalam and Tamil are the main minority ethnic groups?
@@-jank-willson Sinhalese people make up the majority of the country (over 75%), the remaining 25% is made up of Tamils, Moors, Burghers (locals mixed with European colonisers), Malays, Veddas (indigenous tribal people) and Chinese Sri Lankans. There are no Malayalis in Sri Lanka
@@KD-zj4ye old demographic, Sinhalese 69 % . Sri Lanka economy is import based economy which Tamil & Muslim community control. Numbers don't matter who control the economy have upper hand
@@dilshab1075 I'm sorry, I don't keep up with census data. If your figure's right, I'm not far off, so there's that.
The rest of your comment is irrelevant to my comment where I answered the person above. Please stop replying to my comments with irrelevant stuff - I already ignored you once. Are you and "Sach ds" the same person? Because you both keep camping under my comments/replies with irrelevant crap, and you both sound the same
@@KD-zj4ye I not subscribe the channel but my first watched episode is food ranger , mark wein , sunny species noodle eat competition
Sri Lankan cuisine is surprisingly underated,we got a part of Toronto called little Tamil Elam, many Sri Lankan and Indian restaurants, it's mindblowing how similar yet different Indian/Sri Lankan cuisine are,I'd pick Sri Lankan cuisine anytime heck yeah
I am from tamil eelam, living in markham. 30 years. You know something, many srilankans came to canada during the civil war. worked in Italian greek and other fine dining canadian restaurants, are currently owners of many restaurants in the GTA. thanks for your support 🙏🏾
Nothing beats a mutton roll or kothu roti from Babu’s catering 🤙🏾
Same with Pakastani, Nepali, and Bangladesh food, but many people just lump it together with 'Indian' food...
Sri lankan sinhalese cuisine is very much different ( eg unique way of cooking curries using coconut milk and spices) to Sri Lankan tamil cuisine ( which is more like South indian)
@@deela262 Well Sri Lankan cuisine is a mix of Sinhalese, Tamil, Malay, Moor and Dutch influences.
Was waiting for this since 2019 when I first took notice of your channel. Thank you very much for addressing what's going on in Sri Lanka. Feels like home seeing dishes I grew up eating...
