Surprised By China's Train In Nigeria! 🇨🇳🇳🇬 (#87)

  • Nigeria, the giant of Africa, has lately been receiving a lot of visitors from another giant over in Asia. The Chinese are now entrenched in every part of the Nigerian economy, from retail to banking to transportation. Many would claim Nigeria was being pushed into a debt trap, but was that really the case? We would take the newly built SGR railway from Lagos to Ibadan to find out.

Looking forward to the "peaceful" discussion on China's role in Africa. If you get tired of that, you can always make fun of my horrifyingly swollen eyelid instead.
Btw, let me know if you'd like to see more geopolitical commentary-ish videos like this. To me this stuff is pretty interesting, but that might be just me.

Imagine that the United States placed a ban on UK visitors since the covid era, no one has heard any noise. If it were Nigeria that the US had placed a ban on, many Nigerians would have been shouting that the US has rejected Nigeria, spewing spells on the country and so on and so forth... This is our country and if we continue to condemn it, we certainly suffer for it. @Ike Naija because the thieves run the government on behalf of the oligarchs who own them, not in the interest of the people who voted them in office. Correction: when you can print your own money those resources are not scarce but unlimited. Over the past 40 years (since Reagan) America has gradually slid into oligarchy with a facade of democracy. More than half the US Supreme Court are political hacks. Political parties are private organizations and a court has ruled that they can choose whoever they want to be their nominee for president no matter who the voters pick (no appeal yet). In a recent poll more than 50% of republicans said they want to secede. A more interesting question is, in the 2020 presidential election, why would 75 million people vote for a narcissistic, racist, misogynistic, corrupt bigot for president? America is imploding.

      What does that mean, though?
If China literally builds and controls every railway network across Africa, logic tells you that that plays out a certain way in the end (payment for loans that couldn't be afforded in the first place, will likely end up in Chinese ownership).
Once the relationship entrenches like that, you'll end up with a dance between what the Africans want to do, and what the Chinese want to do, and that will likely edge towards the Chinese.
... in real ways that effect Africans in time; mineral exploration, consumer goods, trading, markets, etc

    • @scipio2009

@Ike Naija The worst thing that can happen is that Nigeria defaults, China takes over what they can take over, but then the opinion of China holds sway over the opinions of Nigerians.
Because it's a longer game when you're talking about money.
The infrastructure was built with Chinese designs by Chinese workers, likely using finished goods made in China.
Chinese companies selling Chinese products in Nigeria. And then you'll settle into Chinese merchant's doing the same.
All with Nigerians largely being excluded from the value added functions, while the debt load still sits on everyone's neck.
Maybe I'm wrong; Nigerian will pay back the money, with the infrastructure girding a boom elsewhere.

There is infrastructure (progress as you called it) in other African countries. I’m not sure where you’re getting your information about Africa but it is a varied continent that meshes the new and the old in beautiful ways.

Great video. This rail line was built by CCECC, who have been in Nigeria for decades. They actually started their business in Nigeria drilling wells and grew organically from there with little support from the government until relatively recently for headline projects. Most of their projects have to stand on their own economic merits with local financing. Simply put Chinese enterprises, whether state owned or private, have always been willing to take more risk in branching out to new ventures, and for many it’s meant more rewards.

Great video and I hope your eye infection goes away soon. I do enjoy the geopolitical discussion you introduced in this video and would like to see more of your thoughts. The convo you guys had with the Nigerian in the train was great and I do share similar sentiments with what he was saying. For me though, I don't necessarily agree with the implication he had that China is taking advantage of Africa with those loans and injection of capital infrastructure; while it can end up in such a manner, it can also be a mutually beneficial relationship between both actors. And it's not like there's an alternative that the West is offering which would make African countries reconsider from working with China anyway.
Ibadan looks interesting and I would personally appreciate the fact that the market there doesn't seem as crazy as the one you experienced in Lagos.

@@tbo2120 The implication of "taking advantage of" means that there's a winner and loser, or aggressor and victim. That's what I don't agree with, because it removes the agency of these developing countries and is patronizing to them, not to mention describes a zero-sum game. I'm saying that these deals can serve the purposes of both China and these countries, and be mutually beneficial. In that case you wouldn't say China is "taking advantage of" them.
