The Sabbatical backstory has finally been unlocked. Over the past year, people from around the world have to started to send me messages about how I inspired them to want to visit Africa. People who have lived there for decades, or who have African wives/husbands told me they’re happy that people are finally seeing what they’ve always known. I never imagined that’s the kind of impact I’d have, and I’m happy to hear it. There's much more to come, we're just getting started.
For now, I’m on a short break, and then I’ll be off to complete some side quests in the rest of the world. See you again soon, you already know I can’t sit still for long..

I love the actual interaction with real people and their culture in their every day way of life. And the effort you put in to learn languages so you can better connect with them. I totally get it! I used to do international sales & I always loved going to Africa. Because of my job involved consulting with factories where I met many regular workers I saw a side of Africa no tourist ever sees. I found some of the friendliest people on the planet who were eager to share their lives & food with this white man. It caused me to fall in love with Africa. Working in Africa certainly wasn’t even close to my best paying territory, but I always looked forward to my next trip back to Africa far more than anywhere else I traveled & worked.

As a college student in Milwaukee some years ago, I ended up working jobs that were in the area that is referred to as the ghetto. Milwaukee has always been a city in which ethnic groups have their own areas. Polish are on the south side along with a small Mexican American community. Irish, French and Italian have their dominant ethnic areas on the lower east side of town, with Jewish persons often on the upper east side. Germans were the dominant ethnicity in farming which was just on the outskirts of the city. Majority of black residents lived in the inner city. Working in a neighborhood that was poor, black, culturally and economically cut off from the other parts of the city, was an eye opening experience. Residents were as nice as they could be to me. Those jobs were always fun because the people were so friendly. Some great memories.

@@Girtharmstrong69Missionaries went to Africa together with the colonizers because they considered Africans savages that needed to be "civilized". Haven't you heard of the white man's burden? They enslaved Africans not only physically but spiritually. Religion is an important part of a people's culture and tradition and changing their religion by force was meant to alienate them from their roots and break their spirit. They weren't like the missionaries you see today but were an integral part of colonial armies and imperialism.

True, I'm also a white guy from NY state. I also went to Uganda this past year during the pandemic. I had the same mindset as you about wanting to break free from this toxic environment and experience a more visceral life. Uganda is such a special place that it changed my life for the better. The people there have a different vibe, a generally way more positive one than the people in NY that I've met in my life. Just like you said, at least I can walk down the street in Uganda and i have a smile on my face and other people are smiling too. Here in NY it's really not like that at all. It's a rarity to see that here.

Brilliant and informative and heart felt. Years ago I worked in Algeria and spent time in both Sidi Bel Abbes and Oran with some weeks into the Sahara and up into the Ajax mountains toward Morocco. Funny but I always thought those places were a bit corrupted by the Mediterranean and European influences. Don't get me wrong they were beautiful with incredible food and scenery that were quite jarring for the American from a small Massachusetts farm town but they were not the Africa I was hoping to see. Perhaps I had the same misconceptions that I had learned about what my time there would be as you describe about your early expectations for your travel in Africa. For me then your videos and narration and simple interaction with the people and the streets and in some cases narrow little places I do not know I could handle, have been eye opening and intriguing. I look forward to your every post and hope to see many more and wish you Godspeed and health as you act as our eyes and ears there. Thank you Tommy. All the best.

People have a view of Africa which is obviously incorrect. I was shocked how different Rwanda was compared to what I thought it would be like. Totally enjoyed your vlogs and have been hooked. I do fear for you sometimes though ha ha. Looking forward to more and yes the scenery is awesome!

I'm from the UK and although I don;t think the protrayal of Africa is as bad here, it is so interesting to see just how beautiful and happy the continent is, when the medis says the opposite.

If I was younger and single, I would spend a lot of time in Africa, I loved my time there. Even Equatorial Guinea, which has a bad reputation, there are really good friendly people, some of them are exceptionally good workers and it was a pleasure to spend almost 15 years there with a couple of years in Ghana, which is also full of friendly, hard working people.

I sincerely admire your take on this. I appreciate your travels as a small-town American. I agree with your take on our country. Sad but true. Stay safe!

True wisdom at 21:19 "you're white, we're black, but we share the [same] blood" - if only the rest of the world would share that beautiful outlook :)
