when this gets recommended In 5 years I will have one probably
I would walk around Skyrim all day. Get my workout also, I will get this at some point in my life.
Kaj Hedekar yeah
Did you get it yet?
me: watches after seeing Linus's new video about an air blower.
Also me: did Linus really call luke "slick" five years ago. XD
I'm not one to make fun of Nick names but slick
The fact that immersed gaming is not far off is amazing. All of the virtual reality devices coming out like the Oculus Rift, Virtuix Omni, ARAIG Vest, and Delta Six controller, immersive gaming is on the edge of creation.
you guys should do an updated version of this. The new prototype is basically everything you talked about wanting
yeah wanted to see if they had a video about it but it's from 10 years ago
Its nice to hear from slick once in a while
oh amazing video footage, when is b-roll getting a payrise?
i got to try out an oculus rift today at my local computer store and i have to say im sold. i'll definitely buy one as soon as they have a finalized version, thanks linus for introducing me to this awesome product!
exercise while you game! sooo darn cool. even just walking around a open world with this would be amazing.
Doom VFR Skyrim VR Fallout 4 VR welcome to the future
man this thing has so much potential to be the next big step in gaming
Great! I'm very excited about this and thank you for the reply. I already signed-up with their newsletter.
I realize this is all in pre-production but I'm an avid FPS and wish them all the success.
Omnidirection treadmills (for now) will mostly be good for jogging simulators or walking/running in exploration games like Skyrim. The technology is still very new and won't be able to handle Multiplayer FPS action the way we would like it to for a few more years... here's hoping it comes sooner than later though! The Rift has gotten a lot of attention, I wouldn't be surprised it a lot of developers try making their own treadmills soon
hmm I was skeptical about the Omni, it's nice to hear from people who have actually used it and can say that it does feel like you're actually walking in game. I'm going to continue to watch this product closely, can't wait to get my Rift!
Great video!
Love the new style of videos
soon the day will come when your physical prowess will effect your virtual prowess. when that day comes, i will dominate >=)
Yup. they put you in this padded booth and then you had sensors put on you with a display on your head. most people did get dizzy using the thing, but i had no problems. it was actually really cool for its time.
i kept forgetting what he was talking about because hes so cute.
i know right haha
Luke or Linus?
i think i would die playing dayz, either from a heart attack of how real it must feel or of tiredness from runing from kamenka to cherno, the game's favorite place to spawn u in
The possibilities are endless... the future of gaming/virtual reality is here!
Awesome blog, Linus!
This will be revolutionary.
man, this looks amazing
Got my dev kit recently, can't wait for this!
This is pretty much alpha stage and it's version 1.0 In time it should naturally get better, definitely within our lifetime we should see a setup like this that works flawlessly and is wireless and hi-resolution.
I actually tried out some of the VERY first virtual reality setups in the 90's with Quake. that was pretty cool, but nothing compared to this. Technology rocks.
i really like it and you guys make it better to watch you are my heroes keep up the good work
Wouldn't it be better completely without the kinect and rather use some kind of tracking points that emit a signal in the oculus, the gun and the shoes. 3 points in each one to make them work as vectors, and a wall next to you with a tracking vector would calculate the locations and orientations of these vectors.
The floor should be like a 2D treadmill with high friction and it should move rather easily when you push it around with your feet while straps keep you in place.
sounds possible to me
Thank you guys, very well done.
ok you two getting real funky with the video titles :D
This is a dev kit, not a Rift
Actually the company that makes the Rift is called OculusVR. The full name is the Oculus Rift Development Kit as seen here: oculusvr(dot)com/pre-order/. It is correct to call it an Oculus Rift, just as you could call an iPhone an Apple iPhone. Most people refer to the Oculus Rift Development Kit as "the Rift".
this looks so badass
It blows my mind to think that these set ups may be commonplace near the end of the next console generation, man I hope neuroscience picks up soon, I've totally lost my gaming appetite since watching SAO.
Hey fella, have you heard of or got to check out anything new from Virtuix recently? Exciting times man :)
I would like to see them incorporating the ability to crouch and even also go prone on this thing. That would be fucking AWESOME!
This looks awesome
I think this specific implementation is pretty heavily focused on FPS, but I think it would only take a few modifications to make it work with games like Skyrim, or ones designed specifically for this kind of system that actually translate your movements directly into the character's movements and use realistic physics.
Of course, it's not complete yet; there's no way to really handle anything but perfectly flat surfaces for movement or generalized tactile feedback, but I WANT.
I'd love to try this out in a game like Proteus. Casual walk through a colorful 8-bit style world.
it looks amazing
Linus are you going to E3 ? :) also i love you vids and content you put on your channel, keep up the great work !
i hope more games are supported by this.
Omg , cant wait to get one to those!
This so awesome. Playing TES and running all day
This feels like an actual reality TV show, with diary video clips. Pretty cool actually. Top Chef PC anyone?
they need to do the movement of the gun and looking around seperate, would be awsome!
look at "Clang" its a game in dev for Oculus and its based on sword combat, It may not be as good as you imagine it could be but everything has to start somewhere, give them support and eventually SAO could be here sooner then we think.
2021 here we are.
In a previous video they said that the omni was going to be about 600-800 bucks, correct me if im wrong, the point is that it is going to be something everyone can buy!
You can wear glasses with the rift and it has three sets of lenses, One for normal eyes, one for short sight and one for far sight. And there are plans to make custom lenses I believe.
Oculus Rift doesn't work for consoles at the moment, Oculus VR's Nate Mitchell says it's a matter of development support and interest. "Basically, the bar for a great VR experience is roughly 60 frames a second with stereoscopic 3D support in Vsync, The biggest challenge, actually, is working with the console platform providers, Microsoft and Sony, to make your peripheral a licensed peripheral."~
2,200 videos, and 2,000 likes! Nice job team :)
Xmas 2014... the Oculus and Virtuix treadmill will be mine.
Thanks for that awesome test :)
At last we can now count playing games as our daily exercise.
i think after playing with this for hours on end..well...maybe days, that belts definitely getting tossed. you'd be so used to walkin around you wouldn't need
Definitely. The kind of virtual reality we're trying to emulate today is dictated by the technology we have. Since this approach is much much more doable than intercepting signals from our brains at this point in time, companies like Oculus and Omni are taking the gamble with current technology and will hopefully reap the rewards. (P.S. I am definitely purchasing both the Omni and Oculus when they hit shelves with their consumer product).
Awesome title!
I think the final version will be wireless. but as far as I can see here, the only thing keeping it from getting wrapped around you is the guy who made it manualy moving the cord...
Imagine playing a horror survival game on this! Cant wait for the production process!
In my opinion virtual reality will never work until they're able to simulate a dream. Basically in which you can actually feel the things you touch without it actually being there or moving in real life.
There's just so much that just gets rid of the immersive feeling with things like this. I'm almost 100% sure that thing is really uncomfortable to walk on and doesn't feel natural.
I'm just waiting for the day when they can really put us in a virtual world.
RIP Andrew Reisse, co-founder of the company that created Oculus VR. Yesterday he was hit by a speeding car and killed. Our thoughts go to his family and friends...and my sincerest wishes that Occulus VR goes on to become a huge hit in the gaming & entertainment industry, that's what he'd have wanted.
Always love it! Boss!
The base the gadget show used might be better, yes, but it's also a _lot_ bigger and more expensive. It needs a dedicated room if you build it in to a house. The base on this video is affordable and compact. You can't compare them directly.
They should put a fan on that the faster you move the more windy it gets!
Im so exited when this is an actual consumer thing:o
ARMA 3 is going to be AMAZING when this gets fully released :D
how. linus is the coolest guy ever
Love the whole concept but my only fear is that Oculus will damage your eyes. I hope in the future there will be a way to play the Omni without the Oculus. I know you probably won't get the same experience but still would be nice to have that option.
linus if you have the chance to test arma3 in that enviorment. because what you said with have the looking and moving the weapon seperatly its possible there!
i play arma3 with ztackir5 and its already imersive. but with ocolusit musst be a blast. greetz docd
that would be sick
Amazing! Perfect in @ 10~15 years!
you guys should have been playing a rift with a controller so you knew how much it really added. Its hard to say when the first go with the rift you have an omni.
Will the rift be wireless? the gun and the the rift need to be if you don't want to have to unwind yourself every time you spin around a bunch
well, there could be specific gamemodes that require the oculus and the omni, for balance. It shouldn't restrict the game experience for disabled people, for example.
Combine with a actuator vest to feel the hits/shots.
Imagine this combined with the realtouch interactive !!
it will be interesting if this really does catch on. I went on vacation when 12, and even then, they had this exact setup at a virtual laser tag place in the mall, albeit, not nearly as nice(2d goggles, treadmill style walking, no head tilt detection), but back then they also thought it would catch on, but never did. Maybe the advances will push it in that direction, but i am not holding my breathe.
I hope in a few years they have such a system used in SAO that would be so awesome :D
8 years later we have Oqulus Quest 2 or Valve Index. A lot has changed ;)
The general idea should be, but i'm sure newer and improved technology would have been created/prototyped by then.
Luke's nickname was Slick? That's a little funny, I wonder if there is a story there.
How does jumping, crouch, and prone work with this system and have they addressed these problems with the omni?
what is the name of that gun controller?
Oculus isn't reaching out to consoles, however -- Mitchell notes that while the current generation can reach 60fps in some cases, it often struggles to meet the demands of the Oculus Rift headset. Still, he admits there's no reason it couldn't work, and seems optimistic about the incoming console generation. "We'd definitely love to work with the console manufactures as we go down the road to get the Rift onto those platforms."
Skyrim works with the occulus rift which InTheLittleWood used to play it.
Apparently it's awesome.
That would be amazing.
Hmm, loving the concept and would love to see this in production soon, but how would one crouch or go prone?
Ryse is a 3rd person game and Oculus hasn't been announced for any next-gen consoles.
I think eventually, we're all going to be required to wear helmets for VR. There's so much risk that it's funny to watch someone stand up and use VR. And our balance is partially based on vision.
That's really cool
it's put into the kinect which is connected to computer
love your vids! Cheers!
Linus, trust me, you can still crush your nuts in a climbing harness. Even worse you can have one nut on the other side of a crotch strap. I know this because I have suffered both at some point or another, luckily I was not subjected to large forces.
On a related note, a friend of mine once did a giant's swing (swing on a cable in a harness) with a 50 foot diameter. We raised him to the top of one side, and released him. He was 200 lbs. He swung at least 7 times. One nut under a strap. 7 times
This + Fallout New Vegas = Ultimate Marathon training and expert.
The difference is that the gadget show's version is absolutely huge and costs a fortune. the stuff they tested here is meant for normal customers and will fit in a small room.
you ARE the shapes
Nice vid. More slick.
Awesome!
imagine racing doing about 250 in a bugatti looking out the window. or laying on a hill sniping with this so epic.
More like the Track stars would do great in Battlefield, and the CC stars would be awesome in Planetside 2.
To be fair, he only clarified that in this video is a development kid, not the actual rift its self.
