Artis the Spoonman used to be a local street performance artist that Chris Cornell appreciated. The lyrics are about him. Its not about drugs.. just spoons - and the artist who uses them. I've seen him at various public festivals. He's a legend.

Chris Cornell said, "You know, here in Seattle, you can meet people with spoons in a lot of places, you know what I mean, so there may be a deeper, secret meaning to the song, but there's no doubt it's primarily about him, the SPOONMAN"

I didn't care for it when it first came out, and neither did the guys that rode with me to work, so when it would come on the radio I would crank it up just to be annoying. I guess the joke was on me, because one day the lyrics were so clear, I actually paid attention to them and my opinion of that song changed forever. Now I think that is one of the coolest songs ever written, not because he shot his love and wanted you to lie for him, but at the same time because he shot his love and wanted you to lie for him, a little reminiscent of Hey Joe by the legend himself Jimi Hendrix. Oh, almost forgot, I hope you don't fall for that bullshit in the other reply, way too much shit like that going on in here, but just in case you weren't sure, heads up.

Absolutely love this song, and I love that you went and found info on it, on it's meaning, what the band said about it! I remember when i first saw this music video. I was stunned when i withnessed the "Spoon solo",i had never seen or heard anything like it,before or after! And i love how Soundgarden composed the song for him to jam along with them. Thats why this is my favourite Soundgarden song. Just the fact that they embraced the guy and immortialized him! In regards to more Soundgarden? Fell On Black Days is a good suggestion. You get a nice visual of every band member in action, and the song is a groovy one👯‍♀️🕺💃
Grunge suggestions? Stone Temple Pilots - Plush
Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington - Black Heart (Official Lyric Video)
Seether - Broken ft. Amy Lee
    Seether - Remedy
    Silverchair - Israel's Son
Silverchair - Pure Massacre (US Version)
Temple Of The Dog - Hunger Strike
Temple of the Dog Say Hello 2 Heaven Live at Moore Theater 1990 (A must see if you are unfamiliar with Temple Of The Dog!)
Mudhoney - Touch Me I'm Sick [OFFICIAL VIDEO]
Mudhoney - Here Comes Sickness [OFFICIAL VIDEO]You can crack a joke like: Sick band this 🫢
Mad Season - River Of Deceit
Mad Season - Long Gone Day
Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains
    Garbage - Stupid Girl (HQ)
Sonic Youth - Bull In The Heather (Official Music Video)
    Sonic Youth - Incinerate.
Pick your poison *ahem* ... Out of all of theese, who do i recommend the most? Easily Garbage,Seether and Stone Temple Pilots. But Temple Of The Dog and Mad Season will defintly give you a fun reaction going into them blind. (Not literally, but not knowing anything about them up front) Silverchair might also be a future favourite of yours. All of them are good really! And still there are so many i didnt even mention🙃

Chris Cornell was one of the greatest singers of my lifetime (39 years), his voice like that of Freddy Mercury, Billy Holiday, Elvis Presley, Kurt Kobain et al, are timeless.
I was lucky enough to see him by accident at a festival around twelve years ago... It was the most perfect day and I'd sat down on the grass on the hill overlooking the stage he was playing. Chris Cornell's best vocals are on a Temple of the Dog song called "Say Hello to Heaven" which was dedicated to the late Andrew Wood of the band Mother Love Bone. Mother Love Bone would go on to create Temple of the Dog with Cornell and later replace Andrew Wood's lead vocals with Eddie Vedder to create Pearl Jam. Also interesting is the fact Vedder's first time with his future band mates was on the Temple of the Dog song "Hunger Strike" where he was a guest vocalist.
Just some grunge 101... but seriously listen to "Say Hello to Heaven".

Funny origin for this song is, for the movie "Singles" members of Pearl Jam & Soundgarden had small parts on the movie. Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam wrote down a bunch of fake song names for the fictional band in the movie. Spoonman was one of those songs. Chris saw the list and wrote music to some of the fake songs. And early guitar demo of Spoonman appears in the film during a transition scene.

Also the spoons are an old folk-instrument that we don’t really hear much about these days. Summer of ‘94 my parents and I were in Ireland. We visited the Cliffs of Moher, and walking from the parking area to the visitor center we passed an old lady busking by a stone wall.
    She was playing the spoons.

One of my favorite memories from that era is when one of my classmates from high school came back from a family trip to Seattle and, since he wasn't into rock music and he knew next to nothing about those bands, he very excitedly told us he'd run into "the guy from that Nirvana video who plays the forks." My dude knew we'd appreciate the anecdote and tried to share it to the best of his knowledge, and I always thought it was funny that even though he got everything but the city wrong, contextually everybody knew exactly what he meant and nobody gave him any shit for it.

Matt Cameron was not only the drummer for Soundgarden, but he's also been the drummer for Pearl Jam since 1998. He was even in both bands at the same time from 2010 until Chris Cornell's death in 2017.

I still find myself going back to the stuff that made me fall in love with them in the first place. LIttle Joe, Loud Love and Sub Pop Rock City off the compilation of the same name, the samples of Poneman and Pavitt still make me smile 30 years later.

    -Rusty Cage
    -Burden in My Hand...

I got into rock early. Three older siblings all into late 60s forward. I was 13 in 1970. Concerts were amazing. I've been to over 50 since 1976. Something about live music, even local bands. I love Chris Cornell's vocals. There isn't an emotion he doesn't hit. One of my favorite songs is "Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart". I had it on replay a lot.

Any song by Soundgarden is always an experience, even a song as overplayed as 'Black Hole Sun' still slaps when your in the right mood. I had the chance to see them live in 2016 and they we're incredible. I also highly recommend digging into some Silverchair, a criminally underrated grunge band from Australia. 'Shade' 'Freak' 'Ana's Song' and 'Emotion Sickness' are some of my favorites.

VERY happy that you checked this one out! As a Washington state native that spent a good chunk of time wandering around downtown Seattle as a kid I believe that I can say that I met this Spoonman before. If I did it happened when I was growing up, while I was either on my way to Children's Hospital or returning from Children's Hospital in Seattle. In Seattle there are always a high amount of street performers on the boardwalk. I met plenty of musicians - folks that sang, played a wide variety of instruments and one that I clearly remember was a dude playing some music with spoons. Blew my mind!
:) Just wanted to share that story! Hope that everyone's doing well!

SuperUnknown is one of the great albums of all time: a true no skip listen from start to end. It's not what you'd call uplifting though lol. There's rather a lot to react to there, but you will thank yourself if you listen to it entirely. I was a teen when this and Down on the Upside came out. At the time, I thought Down... was one for grunge enthusiasts only, personally preferring the heavier tones of Spoonman or Outshined. As an adult I now fully appreciate Down also

Man, I love to see you reacting do Chris's music. I love him and he is by far my favourite musician. Whatching you react to him, talking about his music with such beatifull words, makes me feel that I'm having that feeling that you only got when you ear a song for the first time, it just something you never get again from the same song, and yet your videos make me travel back to that moment. Please, dude, continue to react to his songs, either be Audioslave, Soundgarden, Temple of The Dog or his solo work.
