32 years later, and this song is somehow even more relevant than it was when it was written.
Let's hope the day comes Victor when this song is no longer relative or relatable. Just an amazing song by a extremely talented group musicians that can be used is a very important piece of History. Who would have thought in 2020 it would have the impact it has today.
dude, like the whole album - Open Letter To A Landlord, Which Way To Your America, the whole nine!
Yeah actually remember watching this video on MTV when it actually played music videos instead of 16 and pregnant
Amen brother
My Gawd, 32 years?!?
Since the comments is all CM Punk related, I'd like to suggest "This Fire" by Killswitch Engage as the next song
YES!!!!!
OMG YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
he definitely needs to react to that 💯 one of the songs that got me into metal
My intro to metal!
C M Punk 🔥🔥🔥
Vernon Reid is a monster. One of the most underrated guitarist.
The man could shred
itscrazyal he has the three keys. Skill. Soul. And Passion.
Seriously, if smoke started coming up from his fingers, I would never be surprised, sets that guitar on fire!
I love his work on the chorus segment. Sounds great and is like a tongue twister on the guitar for intermediate players like myself.
Word
"HOLEEE SH!T!!!"
That is the correct response to a Vernon Reid solo
Some additional correct responses:
-Tumours shrinking into nothing
-Standing up out of your wheelchair
-Immaculate conception
This song will stand the test of time forever. Talk about lyricism and musical talent coming together to make an epic anthem. Beautiful!
Fact! It was dynamic when it came out and I still rock to it!
A-FUCKING-MEN!
No, Epic was a different song entirely.
Agreed... this song RIPPED! Absolutely holds up.
Well said, Mr. Lawson!
This is such a criminally underrated band.
Amen
no lie brother.
I literally can't upvote this comment enough.
"I exploit you, still you love me. I'll tell you 1 and 1 makes 3." Best verse of the song.
Agreed

I'm so glad CM Punk brought this song to a younger audience, if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have known this masterpiece of a song.
I actually knew it before punk started using it and im 25 now so i was young lol

Vernon Reid is a underrated master on the guitar!!
He wasn't at the time. When they were popular, he was always in the top 10 or 20 guitarists in magazines. But people have forgotten about him since the band didn't have staying power in popular music.
I am not familiar with his work beyond this song. I can't disagree.
One of my top 5 guitarists of all time.
Oddly enough their last album was 2017.
I would add Prince to that list also. Absolute Genius in so many ways!
“IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME”
"I'M THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!"
The company will just get taken over by his dufus son in law and daughter
Damn right
My fav wrestler CM PUNK
That's right
This is such a good message for what we are going through right now. Think for yourself, don't just believe what the media tells you.
or what some article on facebook or some dude on youtube tells you
Eventually they will not be safe to walk down the streets. Lies eventually catch up to us all. You are going to PAY the price sooner or later. J is coming for all of us. Get ready for the BIG reveal. Clean your mirror.
Absolutely. Research everything yourself. Then triple check it
@@chadkirk2977 Agree Chad! When Kaepernick first started taking a knee a guy I worked with asked what I thought about it. I expressed my support for CK and my co-worker was shocked since both of us are vets he expected I would be opposed. He asked " So you're OK with him disrespecting the Flag and the National Anthem!" I told him that's not what he is protesting. Then I told him he was protesting police brutality and the disproportional killings of African Americans. He said "Well that's not what I've read in the news!" I asked where did he get his news he said Facebook!
“Only you can set you free.” It’s up to you discern what’s true and what’s bullshit
You have to think about how old this song is too. And it's still relevant, maybe even more so.
BRO the 80's were GREAT!!!!!! BACK WHEN EVERYBODY ACTUALLY PLAYED THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS BELIEVE ME I LIVED IT , LOVE THE 80'S
Fun fact: The lead singer, Corey Glover, was in the movie, Platoon.
(Didn't feel like skimming the comments to see if someone already mentioned it)
& his uncle is danny glover from lethal weapon
@@datchicoroc1345 funny enough I can see the resemblance
@@datchicoroc1345 What?!?! What would make you say that? Corey was born in 1964, ten years before Danny Glover had his first kid. JFC. I bet you also think Donald Glover was Corey's kid, by your sus logic. Sad.

Vernon Reid is criminally underrated as not only a guitar player, bust as a musician. Hands down one of the best shredders of the 80's. The song has fit every decade perfectly since '89.
I have loved Living Colour from the first time I heard this song. Lyrically AND musically-unbelievably talented. I LOVE the slight alteration to the lyric near the beginning, "Only you can set ME free", so that later on, it's "Only you can set YOU free". We accept the cult status, and it's only us that can reject the cult status. So powerful. Still one of my favorite hard rock bands, album, and song of all time. Please check out Desperate People by them next.
I'll be the old guy in the comments section and say that I bought this album on cassette when it first came out. Living Colour was one my favorite bands on the late 80s opened the doors to a lot of music for me.
Nope another old guy here with ya. I remember looking forward to a late talk show, I think Johnny Carson, or Leno, to see these guys. They were (and still are) awesome live.
Another old guy here. Vernon definitely influenced my guitar playing.
Same here. I saw Living Colour with Urban Dance Squad in the Vanderbilt gymnasium a long time ago. Vernon also influenced my guitar playing. Such and original and varied style.
Saw them live for each of their first 3 albums and support them to this day. Check out their latest album Shade, released in 2017. They did a cover of Biggie's Who Shot Ya, with a very timely video for the current state of unrest; check it out...
Same here
Since we got Punk can we now get Edge: Metalingus by Alter Bridge, please
Not punk. This was nu-metal/political metal.
And this song is basically the musical version of all lives matter.
Dylan Zrim he meant CM Punk from WWE
I second this.
@@dylanzrim1011 punk as in CM Punk.
@@dylanzrim1011 This wasn't even Nu Metal, and there's no such genre as political metal. Living Colour at most was Funk Metal/Alternative Metal. And the vast majority of their songs weren't even metal, only a small handful were. Probably around Stain is where they started to get heavier.
Yeah, this song is all about the duality of things in so many ways... putting the blame of the cult not only on the possibly corrupt leader, but also upon you for giving them that power. I love how this manifests in two closely related lyrics. In the first verse you hear “Only you can set me free”... as in a cultish leader can only be unleashed because of the masses behind them propping them up. In the second verse, though, it’s “only you can set you free”... as in you’re the one who needs to learn how to break free from “the matrix” of sorts. Simple but very potent lyrics...
“I exploit you, still you love me.” Then when that personality lies, the cult (and that’s exactly what it is) believes it. Sounds awfully familiar.
Apple, to a tea!!!
Sounds like #45 to me....
The best part of this thread of the comment section is gonna be all the Trump hate without realizing that they are parroting the personality cult of their own side.
It's not a mistake that this song references right wing AND left wing leaders.
angela gustafson to you? Of corse. But to me (a right leaning libertarian), it sounds like every pro PC talking head or leftist politician promising a liberal utopia and NEVER delivering. The left has promised the black community for over 50friggin’ years that THEY would make their lives better through government policies......45 comes along and makes life better (economically) FOR ALL, black unemployment was the best its ever been in friggin’ history.....yet he is still hated. All because you and people like you are good little sheep buying into the narrative of “orange man bad”.
@@padywac1970 It really is funny. Trump is just about the opposite of a cult of personality. Most mainstream media constantly vilifies him and his supporters. Even Fox is about 50/50 between positive and negative coverage. Obama is a much better example of a cult of personality, from the iconic Shepard Fairey HOPE campaign posters of his face to the videos of celebrities looking into the camera and saying "I pledge to be his servant", to the videos of school children singing hymns to Obama and the media types referring to him as "God' and "Messiah". He even got his 'Neon lights/Nobel prize'
Ahh yes the good memories when this music hit and the crowd chanted CM Punk 🔥
I was gonna say that!!
And making his way to the ring, from Chicago, Illinois he is the WWE world heavyweight champion. CM Punk (insert crowd roar)😂😂
So happy Punk's back in WWE, I didn't think he'd ever go back there. Especially the mess that was the way he left the first time around let alone his AEW exit.🤞 Punk doesn't fuck up this time around. He's 43 years old he better understand that this 2nd WWE run is his last chance for redemption. Otherwise it's clobbering time for Punk's wrestling career.
So... Anyone else here old enough to remember when this song actually came out instead of only hearing it through a video game or wrestler?
O yes I'm 45
I saw them open for The Stones on the Steel Wheels Tour.
Yes. But at the same time, it doesn't matter when someone heard it. If people like it, it doesn't really matter just how they came across it.
Indeed, I was probably about 30. Yes, I'm an old f**ker :)
Yeah, I'm 44. I had this album on cassette.

The most aggressive and amazing guitar solo ever recorded! Also, react to "Open letter to a landlord" by the same band.
Vernon Reid is considered to be the black Eddie Van Halen by a lot of people.
I can see that
Man, this song takes me back...it's amazing to me how certain songs written 30-40 years ago can be even more relevant today. I think these bands were definitely ahead of their time.

Some came here for CM Punk (won't lie I am too lol) but this is one of those songs I grew up with & it rings true to this day!!!
IM THE CULT OF IM THE CULT OF IM THE CULT OF...chills everytime.
Man i remember when this came out timeless still relevant today
This song came out in 1988. I remember when the video premiered on MTV & everyone was blown away by it. Vernon Reid is such an underrated master shredder on the guitar. Lead singer, Corey Glover (no relation to actor Danny Glover) was a young actor as well. He appeared in the Oliver Stone directed Vietnam war movie, Platoon (1986) with Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe, & Tom Berenger. This song still holds true 32 years later; with our current society's state of celebrity-worship, being even worse today than it was back then...
“Open Letter to a Landlord “...
DO IT ... DO IT NOW!
Also do Type, Glamour Boys and Love rears it’s ugly head, all quality Living Colour tunes.
Bi was definitely something different for the 90's.
About. Damn. Time! Great sound and incredible message that is just as relevant today as 30+ years ago when it was written. I get goosebumps every time I hear this
I was 9-years-old when this came out in '89, and this song is just as good 30 years later. 30 years! Crazy!
I loved living color, especially the stained album. They should have continued
they did.
Forget the CM Punk comments. What about the Edge comments and react to Metalingus by Alter Bridge 🤘🎸
I have a feeling, based on the comments, it'll happen.
Union Underground's Across The Nation would be good too.
YES PLEASE. Edge is my all time favorite wrestler.
I want him to react to Mercy Drive's "Burn in my Light" as well. Hell make him react to the Rated-RKO theme
The message behind this song is just as important now as it was when it was first released.
I always thought it said “When a leader speaks, the reflection lies” which is IMO very true. When a leader speaks, the press lies.
Nonsense. We can watch ourselves to see what they say. Don't you?
I saw them 1984 at Columbia University, in a back room , before they were famous...AWESOME!!
How have you not reacted to this?!?!
The next Living Colour song you need to react to is I Want To Know.

I did a analysis speech on this song back in high school and it definitely gave me more appreciation for this song
sometimese i wonder if alex ever had a radio that he has so many songs he "does not know" ;-)
Think about it for a sec, how old this song is, how young he is, how many times this is actually played on the radio...
...what is this ‘radio’ of which you speak.
Hell, I first heard this song in Guitar Hero.
Alex, you are 100% correct! Thank you for "listening" during your first time hearing it as a lot of people don't. This AWESOME song was introduced to us in 1988 (loved it when it came out). The message it screams still remains to this day! *Yes, listen folks! 🙌😊
My first time here, more relevant ever.
This is a good era to be an aging metalhead. Back in 1988, we got to experience this band for the first time, and now we get to experience them again for the "first time" (vicariously) through other people. All of us white metal dudes back in the day loved bands like this (& Fishbone and 24/7 Spyz and other funkified rock bands, or King's X) because they went so hard, just like metal bands. We considered this "metal," whether or not anyone else did. And anything that broadened our favorite genre of music, we liked. We felt like we wanted to tell people, "see? this is how metal can be; it's not limited to what you think it is." So anyway, yeah, it's fun, seeing so many people appreciating something from a genre that was sometimes regarded as the bottom of the musical bin, back in the day.
I was in the Army when this song came out. My buddies and I were budding guitar players going out for the weekend. The radio DJ said if you are a fan of Hendrix, you must hear this song. He pulled over to the side of the highway, turned off the car and cranked it. After the song ended, he turned off the radio and we just sat there trying to take in and process what we heard. He asked, "Okay, who is buying it?" And we all raised our hands. I am glad you checked one of the most underrated bands of the 80s. Check out the Unplugged version Living Colour did awhile ago. Epic guitar playing and Cory still has his voice.
WTF, how did you know I just found out about these guys yesterday and went on a reaction video binge?
I honestly thought the singer was white.... Lol oops
In addition to singing, Corey glover was an actor in the movie platoon as well.

Ahhhhh, the f’n 80’s. So freaking FUN, and let’s not forget a decade of some of the BEST music ever, from Heavy Metal, Rock, Glam Rock, Punk Rock, New Wave and yes, dare I say, even pop music were the best!! Wish I could go back for a day, knowing what I know now. I would appreciate that era for what it was. Fun and excess were the norm! Fun, fun days!! Putting on my political science professor hat: The idea of cult of personality is essentially the idea that a leader has developed a following that is so bought in to the image/icon of that leader that the actual actions and policies of that leader are irrelevant - the followers will continue to follow regardless of what that leader does. The point of the song is that the only protection against or escape from cults of personality is your own critical thinking. I use this song in my classes all the time.
I've really enjoyed this song for so many years. Thank you for sharing this.
Mushroomhead - The Heresy

some things you missed in the analysis:
Cult of personality - Persona is the word for mask in Latin, possible reference to the film Eyes Wide Shut
When a leader speaks, that leader dies - Kennedy (and many others for that matter) warned about a great conspiracy and got assassinated, MLK spoke out against war and got assassinated
You gave me fortune, you gave me fame, you gave me power in your god's name - A reference to Mammon/Lucifer/Moloch/Satan whatever you wanna call it
