Important tip, screw the nut off further so that it stick up higher than the shaft. That way when you hit it with a hammer, you don't damage the threads on the shaft. That's the main reason to leave the nut on at all.
dame dame dame that looks good im so glad you got the flat steering wheel not the deep dish deep dish are very ugly and it brings the steering wheel close up yours is so sweet.
Awesome awesome awesome!!!! Been wanting to do this exact same thing but have been scratching my head on how to adapt the new steering wheel onto the same shaft as you have. Now I know!!!!!😊
Thank you dan, on my 2 boats, there is a spot in the middle where there is a "dead spot" maybe 2cm long. So when im turning the wheel it does not really hook onto the wire until a little bit. Ik this might be commong but how do i fix my loose steering wheel. But when its taking and steering, its very smooth.
Thanks for the video! I will be doing this to my boat as well. Quick question do you have any videos and/or know where to get the parts to replace a sun damaged gauge cluster/dash specifically on a 2012 Bayliner 185BR?
You're very welcome and yeah, it's a great little upgrade that looks so good! Unfortunately I do not know where to find those parts, you're honestly going to have to google search and dig around on eBay and stuff like that and try and find boat part recycling places. It's really tough to find parts for older boats I've noticed although yours is only 10 years old. I've tried a couple of times to find parts for my 2006 and it's been impossible. Good luck to you!
A little bit of bling bling never hurt right? Hope you guys like the steering wheel swap, it's super easy to do! A big thank you to Trevor Jordan who commented to let me know the "key thingy" that goes in the tapered shaft to lock the steering wheel when turning is called a Woodruff Key. One of the best things about doing these how-to videos is that I also get to learn from my audience and that's just awesome to me :) Thanks everyone for your support and comments!
My first bass boat, I had to change the cable and everything. Well, I didn't test it in the driveway. When my buddy and I took it out, we soon realised that I had put the steering box in backwards. It was an amusing day of fishing. And so much fun loading it on the trailer at the end of the day...lol
Yes I sure did, and it drove me NUTS that the original steering wheel wasn't lined up properly when the motor was straight!! lol! Thanks for comment and glad you like the wheel :)
You're very welcome! The very first time I tried to remove a steering wheel and didn't know this trick, I think I just about lit the boat on fire it was so frustrating lol!
Hey Dan, I'm going to do my wheel next week. What do you think about using lock tite on the screws to prevent them from loosening over time from vibration.
Tip back the nut off until it is flush with the top of the threaded shaft. This will prevent damage to the threads of both the shaft and nut. Usually wood will absorb too much of the shock to be very effective.
Thanks for the tip on "smacking" the shaft to get that stuck steering wheel off. Looked like your blue steering wheel had electrical connections for a horn or something. Did you take the connections off?
No problem, it's a handy trick! Good observation on the wiring in the center, and yes it comes pre-wired with a horn. I just left the little wire connectors attached as is and installed it that way :)
That is a nice steering wheel and the blue goes with the lights that you installed!! Nice!! Yea those woodruff keys and be fun sometimes, I have done my work on off road MX bikes and they can be tricky to keep in place because of the flywheel magnet that likes to unseat these. Great choice for the color of the steering wheel adapter, chrome is nice but it is a pain to keep clean! Thanks for sharing and hope to see you out on the water catching some nice fish soon! :)
Thaks so much Eric, really appreciate the kind words! I'm happy I went with black as well, I don't really have any chrome on the boat minus the two rear cleats so I figured the back would match better. Next video is a fishing video, I promise! :)
I love when you guys teach me new stuff, thank you so much! So the little "key thingy" is now a Woodruff key. Going to bed less stupid tonight, thank you again, I really appreciate the comment! 👊
Hi Jesse, I have a standard cable steer system on the boat with a 3/4" tapered shaft for the steering wheel. In this video I convert the tapered shaft to a bolt pattern steering wheel. Hope that helps!
Not at all, it's exactly the same distance, I noticed no difference and honestly, it looks like it came from the factory like that :) LOVE this upgrade!
@@DanRichardFishing What if I dont have that adapter and I just screwed my own holes to fit this steering wheel? I encountered that problem but I dont want to dish out $60 for it lol
@@HodoukenYT if you have the same kind of tapered shaft that I have on my boat you have no choice but to buy the adapter. There's nothing on the steering wheel for that tapered shaft to grab onto so it would be useless. You also don't want to take any shortcuts when it comes to your steering system. A steering failure at a high rate of speed can result in a serious or even fatal accident.
@@DanRichardFishing it worked man I couldn’t believe it. Took 3 whacks while pulling slightly on the wheel. I didn’t not expect the original wheel to come off with such ease, the boat was even in the water when I did it.

Thank you for this video. The hammer trick did the job. Before your video I couldn't get off my steering wheel. 👍

I cant seem to get the screws into the new wheel and into the adapter they dont grab threads

Does this adapter also increase the height of the steering wheel from floor? I am looking to get one and need it to be higher
@@KCOLBURN_8 The adapter is pretty deep but it didn't really increase the overall height of the steering wheel that much, maybe an inch higher.
@@DanRichardFishing I think the adapter plus a more offset / deep steering wheel may give me my desired height.
Wow looks much better! Are u doing a video on the blue leds?
Thanks Matt! I wasn't planning on doing the LEDs but you think I should? It's super easy to add them.

Thanks for the hammer trick to remove the wheel. I had tried that but the trick was hitting it harder.
No worries Paul, glad it helped! It is definitely not a small whack lol!
How much further out away from the dash is the new steering wheel with the adapter vs the old steering wheel???
That’s a nice looking wheel my guy
Why thank you kind sir!
Looks great👍.

Did you straighten out the outboard before putting the wheel on? I did not notice. Nice wheel and great advice.

I didn't find it necessary but it certainly won't hurt to use some of the blue loctite!
Tip back the nut off until it is flush with the top of the threaded shaft. This will prevent damage to the threads of both the shaft and nut. Usually wood will absorb too much of the shock to be very effective.
