Meet Rosa The Sea Otter! | Monterey Bay Aquarium's Pawesome Ladies

Time to meet Rosa the Sea Otter, the matriarch of the Sea Otter exhibit! At 20 (!) years of age, she's our oldest sea otter-and also one of our blondest! Quick aside: the grizzling of sea otters doesn't have much to do with age-you can see from her pup photo that she was born blonde: gph.is/g/ZnxglRK
Rosa was found stranded as a four-week-old pup in north Monterey Bay in September 1999. She weighed just over five pounds at the time! In April 2000 she was released back to the wild, where she spent nearly two years as a wild sea otter-but unfortunately she began interacting with divers and climbing onto kayaks.
Because of the potential risks to Rosa and people, federal wildlife officials declared her non-releasable, and we welcomed her back to the Aquarium as a permanent resident in June 2002.
During her years at the Aquarium she's put her maternal instincts to work-before her recent retirement, she'd reared more pups than any other active surrogate mother!
Rosa gets her name from a character in John Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat-the first of the author's novels set on Cannery Row. Thanks for all of your hard work and years of service to your species, Rosa!

Edit: just watched video of Selka and her first experience as a surrogate mom. This program is amazing. I had happy tears...How many pups have you been able to release to the wild because of these wonderful adoptive moms?

Great question! We've been able to successfully release ~40 pups back to the wild as of this writing, and many others that couldn't be released have found homes in other accredited zoos and aquariums!

The most amazing Otter Mom . The discovery that rescued pups could be released back into the wild with this type of help was a game changer. The otter population is increasing, kelp beds are thriving and the effects of this keystone animal are so important! And they are so incredibly adorable !

I'm confused why animals like this need checkups? These are or were wild animals and they survive perfectly fine without doctor visits. Is it for human safety??

They're able to live much longer, healthier lives with human help. Animals don't have access to medical help out in the wild, so any thing that seems little could be fatal. With help, Rosa's been able to become one of the oldest sea otters ever to live. Female otters typically live to be around 20, but with help have been able to live up well past that. Rosa's already 23, past the time she would have likely passed away in the wild.
