The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Sea Otter Program was the first in the world to use surrogate sea otter mothers to raise stranded pups for release back to the wild.
Since the program began over 30 years ago, the otters rescued and release by the Aquarium have had significant impacts on the health of their coastal ecosystem.
They've helped to restore the eelgrass beds of Elkhorn Slough, a wetland in Monterey Bay. Maybe one day, this same success story will be told in other coastal areas in California and beyond.
A Slough Of Otters: • Sea Otters in Elkhorn ...
Thank you all so much for your support. We couldn't do our work without you! 🐾❤️
Y’all are welcome y’all are doing great thing keep doing yall
If Darth Vader ever shows up in California there’s going to be a lot of sea otters thinking that’s their mom. Darth mommy, I haven’t seen you since I was a baby at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Thank you guys for saving these adorable animals... :)
Love ❤❤
Probably the best video on the internet.
Right
Those little sea otter pup cries! She's so cute! That must hurt when the surrogate mother has to give up the little fur baby.
Yay, I’m happy the baby sea otter has been rescued by you guys! I’m so glad about all this helpful pleasure 😊.
I CAN’T WITH THE CUTENESS
Several decades ago I visited MBA after they had just made the decision to abandon raising rescue pups.
Released into the wild the pups did not survive.
BUT all the rescue work had been done by humans.
I am so glad to find out surrogate moms, sea otter females, not humans, could save the pups and released into the wild the pups thrived.
From 2014-2020, 95% of the Kelp forest ranging from Sam Francisco to Oregon has been eradicated by sea urchins (Kelp forests combat the warning of the oceans, especially locally, by absorbing large amounts of carbon). Not coincidentally, there are very, very few otters that live in those waters these days. Otters can and do eat over 25% of their body weight daily, and they love to chow down on sea urchins. We NEED the otter population to bounce back STAT.
Great program. I love otters 🦦
Microscopic brain: Humans must introduce forign lifeforms to stabilize ecosystems
Small brain: Humans must artifically alter ecosystems
Galaxy brain: Humans must restore native keystone species to stabilize their natural ecosystems.
Sending you so much love and respect! Amazing little animals.. I hope for their comeback in the wild, and I can’t say enough for these surrogate moms!
So proud of the excellent work and research you guys have done for decades, and for being able to celebrate with you verifiable success in your mission with the sea otters. Go Team! Let's save this planet, and especially its helpless inhabitants.
who's cutting onions😭 so beautiful. THank you to the staff involved who care deeply about these animals and I hope they flourish!
Meep-meeeeep. Sounds like our Joey. 💕 🤗
Thank you sir the wonderful work you do.
Love that they are keeping them wild. It must be tough on volunteers and surrogates to not have any attachment
You're doing such an amazing work. ❤️
Love, from Portugal
After seeing sea otters for ourselves when we visited California in 2017 I have to say I have a love of these adorable creatures. Thank you for all you're doing for them. When we come back someday I'd love to visit the aquarium.
Thank you for saving Their Cuteness The Sea Otters!
And she is sooo cute.
MBA is awesome. Sent them some cash to try and help. Hopefully Joey is helping all sea otters. I think he is. He helps me, that's for sure.
Joey is at the Marine Mammal rescue and research institution in Vancouver, BC, Canada
I'm soooooo glad your helping babies and adult otters survive the wild😊!
THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO!!!!
This is a great service. Thank you for saving otters and keeping the cuteness alive!
Bless you beautiful souls for helping these wonderful creatures! 😭❤️ *sniff*
It's so nice to see the works of the rescue tweaks preserving wild life. Thank God fornthis group.
So glad to find this vid! Many decades ago I was at the Aquarium and was told the sea otter pup rescue program had been discontinued, because so often the pups died when released to the wild.
Obviously, you've come up with some new methods!
That work!
Hurrah!
We really need to save these animals. Thank goodness for Monterey Bay Aquarium
You guys are doing an excellent job keeping these cuties safe. Thank you!
One of your BEST videos!! Love it 💕😍
I love otters
I live in Cincinnati, and our zoo has a hippo bloat with the world famous Fiona. I have been obessed with hippos for almost eight years now because of that sassy water horse.
I have now unlocked a new obsession: THE sea otters.
Thank you for what you do! I cannot stop watching your brilliant videos! ❤
There is no doubt Monterey Bay Aquarium is doing an excellent job preserving the Bay area's sea otter population. But they can't save every sea otter pup that has been separated from its mother. I've visited the aquarium recently and watched their sea otter educational film in the auditorium. Afterward, while I was walking on the Carmel beach, a dead sea otter pup was washed up on the beach. It's heartwarming to see a sea otter pup going through human nurturing and finally released into the wild. Still, it is also a reality that not every cub can be saved.
Thank you for rescuing and releasing these adorable pups 😤
Respect for the effort and thank you ❤
It just too adorable just just to to to cute
i love the sweet babies!
thank you guys for what you do it is a very good thing and my profile picture is from a fish in your aquarium

(I know it was seperated from it's mom but that pup's gotsome strong lungs)
Thank you for saving the puppies and taking care of them. GBU 💜
Oh my goodness! This video did what it was meant to do: pull at the heart strings & support this needed & beneficial program that the Monterey Bay Aquarium provides!

SEA OTTERS ARE MY LIFE
That pup is so f u c k i n g CUTE!!!
Can I volunteer to help with this at the aquarium?
I second this! I would love to volunteer....
Idk about volunteering but you can definitely donate and make purchases from their online shop to help support them
Yeah I think you can volunteer.
i believe you can volunteer to help with animal care (:
Sea Otters are so special! Thank you for helping protect them.
What an adorable video! We used to watch otters play in Alaska.
they’re so precious
Thank you for caring and doing such a great job looking after the sea otters. I always smile when watching them on UA-cam. I hope to be able to come and see them in person when Australians will be able to travel overseas.
Thank you! You are precious! This is precious!
what an incredible organization
Very good job thanks to you all👏🌟👍
It's so happy❤️❤️❤️❤️
so cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sooo adorable
BRAVO.
These Rock!
5:07 that face!!!!!
You guys are the best! I really hope your program works out, and that we'll be able to see otters in more locations along the coast. The otter should be the state animal (or the sea elephant), since the California brown bear which is currently on the flag no longer exists
Wonderful
❤️ Heroes
It's so fluffy I'm gonna die!!
Love❤❤
I wanna volunteer to groom the pups.

You guys should give the rest of the animals in your aquarium and display tanks a taste of freedom as well.
cute!😊✌
Its offical. Wolves have been dethroned sea otters are my favorite animal. Very unlikely but I’d love to own a sea otter as a pet one day- even though they eat like 10lbs a day of food and require alot of time. Worth swimming with an otter, if I can afford it in time and money.

wish other rescuers disguised themselves and aimed for release - not always keeping as too many programs do.
😥
I wonder what otter tastes like?
If there is no otter way, this must be done.

I don't understand how they know what the otter population is
Sorry I’m sorry buddy I’m not getting my phone back to my
Monterey Bay Aquarium, how do Sea Otters kill and eat crabs and hard food things?
I know they eat fish, crabs, and mollusks.
Sorry, I just want to know more about them, because I grew up watching them.
The really powerful jaws can crack many shells but otters also use tools. They have a “pocket”, a furry flap in which they can store stuff, and often they will be carrying their favourite rock. When they grab a hard shelled critter, they float on their back, get their rock out and on their chest, and bang the shell on the rock until the critter can be removed and eaten. EDIT: you might want to check out KPassionate channel. She’s a marine biologist specializing in mammals and has done a lot of work with sea otters. She posts some short cute videos but also longer ones for people like you who want to know more
I know how we can help sea otters return their population numbers... Remove the humans.. Thats actually the solution to about 99.9% of all the earths problems
I love otters
