    Watching Arcane as an artist is so difficult, it looks so damn good that it's distracting!
    I found myself paying more attention to the rendering etc and missing what was going on lol
    I was hoping someone could make a video about the painting techniques, so THANK YOU!

      oooo i feel this so much. I cannot watch both the story and the artsyle at the same time, sometimes i end up rewatching some parts to see the other one two, or just to take screenshots of the absolutely beautiful scenes they have

      @@k0micazi yeah it really is masterclass of animation, 3D and 2D. It is pretty crazy to see that the show is animated in Maya and then all the textures and background elements are hand painted, as well as vfx. It is a great blend of classic principles with modern techniques.

    I was very motivated by your work here; it's very informative and helps a lot of aspiring and professional artists. A few years ago, I used to draw frequently and had my whole setup. But college kept me very busy, I bought a display tablet and am now getting back into drawing. Back then, I could spend 10 to 15 hours drawing nonstop, but now I’m so out of practice and impatient, haha. but with practice, I’ll get there again. I have good line art techniques, but I’ve lost a lot of my rendering skills.
    Once again, I’d like to thank you so much for your video. You are very talented.

    -did you eyedrop a lot of the colors from the screenshot or did you try to eye match them?
    -what brushes did you use?
    -how many hours did you spend on this?

    • @juliejoyart
      @juliejoyart  Місяць тому +5

      I did a mix of both! I tried to eye-match some colors to practice color observation, but I also used the eyedropper tool to check for accuracy and see if I got it right :) For brushes, I mainly used a standard round brush and a softer-edged brush from Ross Draws' Graduation Pack tutorial. As for how many hours it took, I can’t say exactly, but I’d estimate around 20-ish

    Could you perhaps explain your color choices when choosing how to deepen shadows or perhaps even the tools used?

    • @juliejoyart
      @juliejoyart  Місяць тому

      For this piece, I noticed that when deepening skin's shadows, I used more desaturated colors (at least compared to what I usually choose), often in the gray range, which helps create smoother transitions between colors. On the other hand, the hair had more vibrant hues which makes it really pop against the more neutral skin tones

    And what is the point of this copying? What does the artist learn during such a frame redrawing? Perhaps this was said in the video, but I don’t understand English well, sorry. :"( So I would be very grateful if you wrote the answer to this question in text.
    It’s just that in my country any copying of anything is very strictly condemned, and even more so putting it on public display. Therefore, I am interested in the views of foreign artists on the topic of redrawing frames from any cartoons.
    (Sorry if the text sounds crooked. Google Translate helped me write it. I hope that the essence of my question remained clear).
    Good luck in your creative journey!♥

    • @juliejoyart
      @juliejoyart  Місяць тому +2

      Don't worry, I think I get what you're saying :) For me, the main purpose of copying is to practice and learn. Even though it might look like I'm just copying on the surface, I'm actually deeply analyzing what I’m seeing. It's a way for me to improve my skills and develop a deeper understanding of this art form. With this particular piece, I focused on improving my brush control and rendering. Lately, I’ve been struggling with brush control, and this study has really helped me practice that :) Right now, I’m in a phase of my art journey where I really want to level up my skills. I’m not just doing copies, though: this is just one of many ways I practice. I’ll also be sharing more personal work in the future :)
      As a disclamer, I’m not claiming the original work as my own, nor am I selling it. This kind of practice is simply a valuable learning tool for me, not an attempt to steal or disrespect the original work.
      I hope this helps clarify things, and thanks for asking! Best of luck with your art journey as well! ;)

      I think there’s a lot to learn from both 2D and 3D! The show draws a lot of inspiration from 2D techniques and it's such a great example of how the two can blend seamlessly :)

      Fun fact: 3D models use 2D textures. The ones in Arcane are hand-painted.

    Why did you just trace and copy the frame? I thought you would analyze the style and apply it to your own work. What is the point of copying?

      I like replicating artwork because it’s a great way for me to absorb the information. I’m not just copying mindlessly: trying to recreate something helps me really understand it :) But you’re right, just copying isn’t enough. It’s also important to apply what we learn to our own work, and that’s exactly what I’ll be doing in my next video. Stay tuned! ;)

      This is a mostly a color study, not an anatomy or artstyle study.
      Why focus on trying to get the Stylization of the anatomy when she was mostly focusing on the colors?
      Ofc you don't have to trace if you don't want to, but tracing won't waste much of your time if you're just trying to learn how to color and paint specifically
