Wow after seeing your video and the beautiful clips of Arcane, I opened netflix, found Arcane and binge watched it. Now I am back here and now I totally get what you're talking about. It definetly was worth the watch and I loved your video about it too. Thanks for talking about this great series.

Arcane has some beautiful environments and character design. I absolutely love the art style that really makes the world feel alive and breathing. I would love to learn that style for concept art.

I like that Art Nouveau preceeded Art Deco by not long, and that they're not too different of styles (and AN must have partly inspired AD), which mirrors the story of Zaun and Piltover. Zaun existed first before the disasters made it a dangerous place to live. Those who could afford to leave made their exodus to build Piltover as a city on the hill above.

Your short video essays are so well made with such attention to detail. You dont take random scenes from the show, but things that actually correlate with what you say (coinflip scene comes to mind). Arcane is a wonderful show and it shows that even corporate productions can thrive with artistic passion, or even enable it further than mere passion-projects.

Netflix has no contribution towards Arcane none other than distribution. Productions are all in Riot and Fortiche hands. Great video btw.

For me, there's another amazing thing about Arcane - the characters look unique. In most animes, the characters look quite similar, without any recognizably unique features. Sometimes their faces even look the same, they just change the hair and accessories, height and clothes. In Arcane, non of the characters look the same.

I loved this analysis! The meaningful lighting and the different contrasts and how they were used to build the world was absolutely inspiring, from the golden glint of Piltover to the dark green and purple motif for Zaun, this show is genuinely inspiring.

This is such an amazing analysis! Especially in only 8 minutes. You've managed to explain the design behind Arcane's art, clarify and define that world with your findings and then expertly relate it into the story while telling a bit of your own with it. Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Some great information and education on the design and artistic choices. Most everyone says "Steampunk (a couple missed by far more claiming Cyberpunk) style. The impact of this was so subtle but strong in this series I can really appreciate your making it the point of this short essay.

I love this video and I love how it points out the art movement inspiration for Zaun and Piltover.
You mentioned how short Art Deco and Art Nouveau were by comparing them to the Renaissance, but I think that is a slightly unfair comparison. If you look at art trends on a big scale across history, they were usually very long (hundreds of years) until after the renaissance. Looking at 20th century movements really highlights this. Impressionism was about 20 years (I know it wasn’t 20th century but it kicked off the spiral of the 20th century movements so I’m including it). Expressionism was about 15 years, Fauvism was around 5 years, and Futurism was around 10 years. There are many many more movements in this time period but I’m not going to go into them all. Anyways I’m just saying that AD and AN were not actually very short movements for their time period, it just looks like that when you compare them to much earlier movements.
Again, this is a really great video and my comment is only really a nitpick.

So, with a degree in graphic design I studied both of these styles and should have spotted this was what Arcane was doing, but I didn't. I'll give myself the excuse that I was too wrapped up in the story and the mind-blowing animation style. Glad I found this video to clue me in, so obvious once you pointed it out. Cool video, thanks so much for posting.

I love Art Nouveau & I love Arcane so I love this- thank you 😍 I even live in an Art Nouveau house so I guess I felt right at home in Zaun 😂
4:54 Oh my gosh, that's the Marienplatz in Munich o.o Didn't expect that & it's so surreal to see D:
(I also love Brutalism so I'm excited for Noxus xD)
I also freaking love how this highlights what I've always loved about LoL (I only played it for a very short time as a teenager xD): the designs. As the game wasn't really my thing I wished they'd do something with all the character design & world-building so Arcane was a dream come true for me- & they delivered something beautiful 💙
Awesome video- & you just brought back all the Arcane feels 😭💕

Thanks for sharing all these insights!
I'd like add my take to your next-to-final point. That every dev on the project adding their own bit of creativity results in something as incredible as Arcane. I'd nuance that with keeping creative people aligned and focused on the same vision (in my experience) is extremely difficult. I'm a tech artist in game dev and all of my team members are wanting to push their contribution to a higher level. We're all creatives wanting to do better than we did before, you know? But, one person's pet project to improve the quality of their contribution can so easily disrupt another team member's work. Or someone decides to do a thing to make this character better than the last, but this new thing causes the character to break in-game. Now the team has to scramble to either make the game handle the new thing correctly or the character needs to be reworked to exclude the new thing. Both options costing unplanned time.
This is part of why Arcane blows my mind.... how did they get that many creative people to push the quality level and stay aligned with each other well enough to produce something so special??
I guess in my experience it's common for me to see creative professionals try add to and improve on each iteration of their work. But, it's uncommon that every creative professional on a team manages to stay aligned on a coherent end-product. To be disciplined in choosing only the pet-projects that support and enhance the vision of the end-product. To be considerate of how your pet-project affects the team and project.
In my experience this type of creativity has never been managed well. It only works when each individual shares a similar level of commitment to the vision, consideration for their teammates, awareness of the consequences of their actions, and creativity and passion for the project.
There's lots of talented, hardworking, and smart individuals out there. But much fewer teams of such individuals who also manage to work together as one organism toward a shared goal.
