One mistake i often see in the park is overusing the ground to get in the right position to stand up. If you get used to that little help, then on a highline it will be difficult to find yourself comfortable while positioning to stand up.

Another huge one I see when coaching beginners is that if you haven't practiced mounting uphill you can't use the mental cheat code of sliding out a bit, turning around and walking back to your friends. That cheat has been super useful for helping people to learn the line dynamics before introducing exposure to the mix but sit-starters can't use it at all, only people with a good chongo. Biggest example from our group was someone whose first ever highline session they rolled out a bit on a 50m, turned around, walked all the way back and sat down without whipping. When they tried to go the exposed direction with their newfound confidence they couldn't do more than two steps without whipping over and over due to the extra fear.

Thanks a lot for this input! I exactly see what you mean and I also had similar experiences. Definitely great to get a good list to learn from one another and to make teaching highlining easier in the future 🙂
