Here we have Hans Hotter, a voice that could be argued to be the most beautiful of post-war Europe, a true basso with a solid dark center throughout his range. And while a paragon as Wonton, he is at the same time able to bring the most expressive precise and personal of expressivity to these great, but small scale and most tender and intimate of musical utterances.
His voice has some time and use and age on it ... doing what we could NEVER do ... but consider this ... Brahms himself was within a year of his death when he wrote these, an OLD MAN facing the mortality of a dear friend and himself. Hans Hotter's aging HUMANITY shines perfectly here, in still lovely voice though aged ... if you understand, you understand...

It could be argued ... but not today ... this is wonderful ... an incomparable interpretation...
His voice like a soft velvet.... wonderful
God damn it, good , better, best at a certain age, he was an incredible interpreter of any thing he touched or should I say sang.

Thick, woofy production, unstable vibrato. The Hans Hotter of a decade earlier was a much better singer.
I'll bet you were much more appealing 10 years ago..
And still, preferable to many others singing this wonderful songs!
