Both Baker and Parsons give the highest and noblest example of greatness in Art. So simple, deep and natural! First the composer's soul... and "The Poet Speaks"

I was fortunate to hear Dame Janet perform this live with Daniel Barenboim at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA in the early 1970's. It brings tears once again...

I think that she took great care with her instrument her art and her life. So consistently beautiful and thoughtful.

Janet Baker is the great Damme, Bach soprano and Leaders repertoire among 10 greatest in XX c.

Thank you. Thank you . Thank you for posting this most extraordinary sublime work of art with perhaps the greatest of all Schumann singers of our time. This is so achingly beautiful as to defy any more words, so I leave it at that.

There are so many different colours to her voice and all of them incredibly beautiful and everything joins up so perfectly in terms of the musical intention. Probably one of the greatest musicians among all singers ever. Arguably Ferrier's version is more emotionally affecting, but this is quite extraordinary singing.

Rarely before have I been so deeply moved. I burst into tears when she sang, "Die Welt ist lehr, ganz lehr." As close to perfection as any mortak could hope to get. How I wish Schumann could have heard it!

lehr? it is 'leer' = empty...

You are probably correct. I admit my knowledge of German is limited. However, surely it is the SENTIMENT and the way Janet Baker so eloquently EXPRESSES it that matters most, is it not? In verbal communication of any kind TONE is the most important element -- or so I believe. In signing TINE is EVERYTHING. Notes mean nothing if just blatted out however accurately. Thank you for taking time to notice and care about the error.

yes - no matter what the spelling is Janet Baker's singing is conveyeing an eternal emotion.

I have the privilege of having seen and heard her live, dating back to the 1970's. What often goes unsaid is the quality of her acting. She inhabits the meaning of the lied simply with her stance and facial expressions. Incidentally, the first of her LP's I purchased was of this very work with Martin Isepp the pianist.

      Some letters aren’t german.
      But that voice 😍,
      And that musical heart 😍...
      So very moving!

Why is it one tone below the original one?

    • @georgesmelki3319
      @georgesmelki3319 8 років тому +6

+zozorro proton Probably to suit Janet Baker's voice....but it doesn't really matter, does it?

Because mezzo sopranos can also sing this song cycle lower

This is an older woman looking back on her married life and the lower tone suits the retrospective as well asuiting a mezzo voice

This is affectedly emotional and slow with extraneous sentimental ideas about the music brought in- its glory emerges by itself from intelligent musicality as in Norman/ Gage and not slow wobbling, portamento and portentious pausing as coming from a self-regarding singer lacking the objectivity of mind to know and relish the music enough to put it first.
