- Here's why all book covers look the same. Book cover look-a-likes or cover clones. I go through a few recent book cover trends in 2021 and the past few years that I've noticed in YA / young adult such as swords, that black snake and why novels set in foreign countries (to the west) all look yellow.
These are just the tip of the icy bergy.
Have you noticed any cover trends recently?
Let me know if you like this typa content with a like/comment :)

I hope that snake gets her coin she's such a talented model
I agree she deserves a bonus
😂😂i-
She's iconic
did the person who uploaded that specific black snake to shutterstock know they were about to start an ERA 👏🏻
And make BANK
Haha that poor boi is famous now, I hope he gets a lot of royalties so he can buy a lot of mice.
john green crayon aesthetic was such a moment
yes, but it felt so authentic for 14 yr old me
yup, and tbh I kinda like that trend-
😳
Graphic designer here........Clients usually don't want to pay for the unique photography or illustration. They usually find 5 images from Shutterstock and you have to use them all :D ( I try to stay away from jobs like that, because there is no creative freedom )
love the insight and this is so true. they always want the golden trio... fast and cheap and works
oh wow T_T if i were someone who wanted a cover im definitely finding someone like you who wants creative freedom
"The one with the sword on the cover!??" gave me flashbacks to working at a bookshop. So many angry customers yelling at me because I couldn't find the blue book they wanted. One lady actually came in, looked at the CURRENT Bestseller table, and got in my face because the book with a cat wasn't there anymore and she wanted it. When did she see it there? 3 years ago.
oh god i did work exp at a bookshop once and i got something so similar sksksksk
The snake on the cover of "The Queen of Nothing" is actually the main love interest so that just makes it funnier
Cardan my favourite snake 💖🐍
@@soyboy6953 Lol I loved him despite having a tail
I've never read the series so I'd like to say the two things that came to mind when you said this.
1.) Is this a worthwhile series to read? just wanna know if I should try it
2.) I completely read the first reply as "Corden my favorite snake" and thought they were talking about James Corden: British comedian turned snake.
@@Sadie-rai 1) its enemies to lovers ad by that I mean enemies to lovers with a morally grey protagonist, also personally I enjoyed it very much
2) His name is Cardan Greenbriar and he is a cinnamon roll so If I tell you why he is a snake it would be a huge spoiler !!!
@@tanvi5051 Thank you for helping me out! I'll definitely start this book next then. I adore Enemies to Lovers, and I also adore morally grey protagonistic writing so this sounds way up my alley! Not to mention snake people sound really cool and cinnamon rolls are everything!
Can you also talk about book titles? Sometimes they really are a turn off before anything 😭
YESSS what type are you thinking about in particular?
Yeah once I told myself I'm not buying any YA Fantasy with the Queen, Crown, Blood, Ash or Bone in the title anymore.
@@ivylilybasket I WAS JUST THINKING THAT. Also 'daughter' or 'children'
everything is The [Blank] of [Blank] and [Blank] lol
@@ia490 it’s ok you can say ACOTAR
The G stands for “GIVING US THE CONTENT WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR”
OMG you talked about the Sepia filter every american movie uses when they do something in latín América or México lol they always use it, is a whole joke here in latam at this point
To Brazil they are a little bit more creative (unless it's a favela, then it's sepia), here they put max saturation to seem extremely tropical, and maybe some bluish ones if we're in danger in the amazon forest
when I think of sepia in an american movie I think of mexico right away but it truly applies to all of latin america, except for Brazil, most of the time the films just looks like that "indie kid" aesthetic with too much saturation, it's so funny
@@juliaabreus SIM CARA KKKKKKKKK
the girlies are fighting for their lives omg they just keep going into the ocean like BESTIE YOU CAN'T SWIM STOP THIS
girl I would love to see you make a good book cover that has snakes, swords, glasses, and jaundice 🤣
edit: plus drowning women in ball gowns omg
not sure about GOOD but I can deffo make.. A cover
Ok but i really wanna draw this sounds like a fun challenge!!
Hear me out. Sunny day grass field. Sword on the ground with yellow snake going around it.
@@itsdivyag doit doit doit
I wanna see a snake wearing a crown and carrying a sword. Wait I think that cover exists.
can we talk about the Action Fantasy Girl YA covers that look like the author just made her OC on DollDivine or RinmaruGames, a la Throne of Glass
I HATE THOSE SO MUCH ITS UNREAL
I NEED NAMES
Omg rinmarugames is a name I have not heard in yEARS. As well as DollDivine.
ayy
the tog cover kinda looks like a videogame character, but she's just there standing still in her black widow pose so it's just weird af
speaking of YA book covers, I’ve been seeing the trend of fully detailed illustrations of the characters for YA fantasy books (bone crier’s moon, these hollow vows, a sorcery of thorns) and i personally think they’re beautiful but then someone pointed out that the two people (who are most likely love interests) on the cover of bone crier’s moon look like siblings and now i can’t unsee it lmao
😩😩they do say people tend to date people who look like themselves
Two other book cover tropes I've noticed, particularly in YA:
"It's a book TM" usually a paperback printed to look like a leather bound book with fancy brass reinforcements, probably mimicking some book from the world.
And my favourite, which is sihlloettes. Can be stylistic, solid mask, or photorealistic, but orders some room for creativity and can even be somewhat related to the story. Pairs well with a bright cover colour.
Love this!
The stilleto trend as well
my favourite ya book covers of all time are the og mortal instruments covers. i love how overdesigned and ugly they are it's like lens flares!!! cityscapes!!!! reD hair!!!!!! truly iconic
even the other versions of the cover have the shirtless man trope!!
My bengali heart sang when you spoke about the turmeric filter. I watched Extraction with my family and none of us got over the curry-powder colouring
This made me think of how funny it would be if you turned classic book covers into those styles, for example the sunglasses trend for Crime and Punishment
How do you make a quality book cover that will catch the eyes of those local Ross and Marshall’s shoppers? Easy. You would need some of the essentials like:
•snakes
•crown of some kind
•maybe some blood or liquid gold for extra flare
•flowers/leafy things
•daggër
• a bare chested caucasian man framed from the jaw down &/or the bare back of a skinny caucasian woman, preferably with a darker hair color-usually not in the blonde tones
•back of mysterious caucasian lady in flowing dress running, or hair obscuring her face
•minimal or muted colors
•cursive/cursive-like title
•prolly paperback
Omg DING DING DING
on defense of queen of nothing, (spoilers ahead)
- the crown is Jude's (the protaganist) crown, it's on the cover because jude had these thoughts that she didn't deserve to be queen as she wasn't immortal
- the blood is her blood on snow (the backround of the cover) after when she fights with her father and bleeds out in the snow
- the snake is the love interest after breaking an important object to the story (the crown), yeah, he gets turned into a serpent.
Adding to all of those “original” designs: the corporate style bland ass artwork that’s been plaguing the contemporary and romance genres🙄 like when I first saw them I thought they were all by the same author😭
i HATE those covers
the g stands for "good golly my dearrrr"
As someone interested in illustrating book covers, these vids on covers is very interesting and fun to look at. I'd love it if you made more.
Aww glad you liked this!!!
trying to get into design with my lazy eye u know.
Hi besties, what cover trends do you like/dislike or have noticed recently? I'm gonna make this a series cause there's a lot. I'm glad YA cover makers are looking good these days and aren't being paid in coochie hairs anymore - bravo!
pls make sure to like the video so i can afford teeth whitening treatments
Okay so i now work at this bookseller for the library; i see WAY TOO MANY BOOKS THAT NEED SOME EXTRA LOVE. So here are your idea's:
1. Wholesome cover video where you help the self-publishers get a better cover for their book (the fonts.. THE FONTS.)
2. My mind immediately ran to those 5 euro romance novels you get at dollar stores, drug stores or supermarkets where of 60%, due to fifty shades, is now about a 'tycoon' sweeping you up and dragging you home, his home specifically. Most of them have utterly ridiculous names. There was this one where the greek main character is called 'balthazar' i mean- EXCUSE ME?? Just pick a name like Andreas or Nicholas, but no that is too normal and human.
3. I also feel like cookbooks can sometimes use more love; as i know, you show the food etc. But i really wished they'd go for more.. challenging designs instead of just a picture. Good Example: My Asian Kitchen.
I believe those are my idea's right now?? Mainly the first one is the one i always kinda get itchy from as an artist myself, the fonts.. so so bad.
Also the pictures make it worse.
Anyway, weird fact of my workday: i saw this book by a spanish author (i had seen the book before in spanish, it had now been translated.) Called 'the friendship'. It literally shows to females hugging intimately. i internally cried as a lesbian.
Ps: i also want to point out that Usborne has really pretty pop-up books right now, i got the one in the forest for myself and it's truly unbelieveable how beautiful it is, how many pop-ups the book has and how carefully created it was. If you want a comfy read that isn't heavy on the mind, big recommend! And the art just makes me happy.
Have a nice day all! Hope my rant inspired someone
a lot of YA novels have large titles with minimal art, like CAN YOU READ ME
charlie bowaters art and similar style cover art are EVERYWHERE right now
I know EXACTLY what you're talking about
The font is always like some hard to read serif italics in like a neon green or the complete opposite and comic sans
The G stands for Getting flashbacks to when I took her personality in year 9 and having recovered since…
what even is my personality im so curious to know what you mean by this
itsdivya Vine references
@@freddiehudson4154 akakkaak it's tiktok references now
I'm drawn to books that have illustrated covers, like Carry On, An Enchantment of Ravens, or Cemetery Boys. They can also fall into a generic "look", but I tend to feel they show more effort on the part of the publisher. It's harder to get an artist to draw a picture from scratch than to get a graphic designer to put together a few stock photos.
Yes!! Those covers are so pleasing to look at
All those hours in Adobe - all those designs - all those YA novels... Brought us here. This is one of your best videos yet!
all that cracked photoshop
I knew I wasn't the only one who thought that the evil yellow filter made foreign countries in Hollywood films look like they all caught jaundice. Would love to see more graphic design vids like this
And yes Queen of Nothing is a big mood
As an author and graphic designer...I saw the snake come up on the first row of the search and CACKLED 😂😂😂
The cover for Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao is pretty unique, I think. At the very least, it's very eye-catching!
"they just be adding so much curry powder to all these books they be looking like jaundice" WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO BE THIS FUNNY
I would love to watch more videos about book covers! I think a video about older series that get newer covers in much different styles, or how the same book can have different covers in different regions would also be interesting. Or a look at illustrated/painted book covers over the years? Even manga and comic covers vs written book covers?
I'm losing my mind over Red Queen and Glass Sword being used in the thumbnail, they are from the same series that's why they are the same 😭😂
series looking the same is one of the examples where it makes sense for continuity as an example "why books look the same" also i kinda just like the covers together so I put it. but I guess it doesn't make sense that much when the snake ones are different series !!! But ty forpointing thatout tho I'll maybe replace one of the covers with another
@@itsdivyag It's all good! It just made me laugh!
I was reading a fanfic and i saw the notif. the fanfic can wait i guess
edit: the turmeric filter took me out
This is one of the reasons I tend to avoid a lot of YA these days (kind of). Outside of some exceptions, there's little creativity or uniqueness with these book covers that I get bored at seeing them whenever they appear on Goodreads newsletters. Much like how others have pointed similar issues but with recent movie posters. Great video once again! 👍❤
For me it is the title that often turned me off. Not only the cover, event the title WAS THE SAME.
Its always start with:
- random 2 words which is the relevance of the story is questionable (for ex: Serpent and Shadow, Bone and Smoke, Crown and Blood)
- x of y (A court of thorns and roses, goddammit its even has same characteristic as previously)
- cryptic dialogue (Something That I Din't Tell You)
@@valhatan3907 Great points on that too! Titles can also be a make or break matter for books, since that can also either catch a reader's attention, or not give any interest at all, depending on how well its summarises the story in a particular way. And especially with how similar titles have been with YA has also really bugged me.
YA these days take themselves too seriously. Whatever happened to fun? The teenage wonder of feeling you own the world and the unlimited potential you have. The Naivity of being an adolescent, and NOT being an experirnce military leader of a whole kingdom at 18...
Why are they all trying to be complex and edgy? A lil bit of these is absolutely fine, but almost every single YA novel i see are like this. Especially fantasy
hear me out and try the mistborn series by brandon sanderson. epic fantasy, cool and detailed magic system, will leave you in tears, part of a larger universe, check. Even the covers are gorgeous
@@Rie_Bot I've been reccomended his books a lot over the past year now, planning to find in my local libraries or somewhere like that soon. 😂
The g stands for ginormous gratitude for uploading videos so often these days
Yours Sincerely
Divya G ( a possible variant)
“Are you sure you’re not a Gemini?” I’m screaming 😂😂😂
god I love the new content you're presenting to the table (I loved the previous ones too dw mwah) but THIS!!!! very important topic. I can rant for hours about mystery/thriller/crime/detective books that all use what feels like the SAME DAMN FONT and composition (a sans serif title smack in the middle and occupying the space from top to bottom) + a very cold-looking, mysterious road/forest/person running away/cabin in the woods in the bg. drives me absolutely up the wall when I see SHELVES of it in bookstores like I can't even look.
anyways love your videos so much, you're super funny. hope you're having a good day
ok but the black snake on the cover of The Queen of Nothing actually relates to the plot, someone turns into a huge frickin snake 😭😭😭😭
we love foreshadowing
We can never forget the enemies to lovers book covers where the main boy and girl are represented on the cover.
Just in case you don't know Divya, i GENUINELY love every single one of your videos. Like the content that you produce is more well-produced and witty than most, so you truly deserve more recognition. I haven't picked up a book in like two years but I still enjoy watching all your book related videos 🤣
AAAA THANK YOU SM
