it's baffling how people who like verity somehow didn't read the obvious cheating and murdering your disabled wife thing, like isn't cheating supposed to be the number 1 ick people have? well I guess if the disabled wife in a coma who is villainized is being cheated on it doesn't matter.
The way disabilities are treated in fiction pisses me right off. If it's not some kind of cosmic or narrative punishment, it's a plot device, and if not that, then it's a secret "superpower" or something. It's never just a character trait. So of course cheating on your disabled wife is okay. She _deserves_ it, just like she deserves to be disabled, based on the contents of the manuscript
Ngl that’s a real fear I have and that book is a no for me. I’m a disabled lady and like I do get it not everyone wants to be my partner but yikes on trikes that would be my nightmare
Something I hate about Verity is how coho couldn’t. COULD NOT. Take a break from being a man apologist for ONE BOOK. If I were to rewrite it, I’d either 1. LEAN into Jeremy being the villain. Make Lowen feel sympathy at first, but as she uncovers more and more secrets about Jeremy (make Verity’s manuscript cast more shade on him specifically), she realizes that she is trapped in the house of a psychopath. Have Lowen take the kid and run. Potentially still kill Verity, but make it tragic? Unsure. Or 2. Lean into LOWEN being the villain. Make her paranoid that Verity is faking her disability, and that leads to her conspiring to kill Verity to save Jeremy and his son. Make her unreliable as HELL. Drop hints that she is not right in the head, and Jeremy is only enabling her. In this case, both MC and love interest are the villains. Basically, give Jeremy a more active role in plotting and sneaking around, while actually keeping a lot of the plot beats of the original story. Oh, and get rid of the manuscript. Or write it better. Idk. Make it about Verity’s whole life- her upbringing, her parents. Really let us get to know her, but through the lens of someone interpreting her words in bad faith. That way, if we peel back Lowen’s POV, we get a picture of a woman who is deeply flawed, but still sympathetic, and not deserving her ultimate fate.
The thing that gets me abt the twist in Verity is like…girl you couldn’t have put the disclaimer absolving you of crimes you ADMITTED TO DOING but DID NOT ACTUALLY DO at the START of the manuscript????

I can't see what's so captivating about these books. A moment of silence for all the translators that sacrificed themselves to translate these books 💀 They should've been paid double for the service. Also the people who had to read them for the audiobooks.
Okay, why, after watching like five videos mocking Colleen Hoover, have I never heard of the ableism and stuff? People only ever make fun of bad writing style and dumb character names. I wish I'd known sooner this stuff was legitimately nasty and not just badly written.
Yeah so there were a few i didn't mention. Off the top of my head one of the children has autism (mentioned in the book as 'aspergers' which is outtdated) but in the context of the book it feels like it's used as a plot device bc it was just added on to make people hate Verity even more (she's always comparing the child to her quote more "normal" children). There's also the bit where MC she feels soooo bad Jeremy has to look after a bedbound disabled woman ("eggshell with no yolk" comment...). The carer also at one point comments on how she should address Verity with respect. After MC reads that Verity is like potentially a murderer then her fears towards her are more legitimised but this in itself is the whole 'faking disability' which reinforces ableist stereotypes.
Me: "I think I've seen enough youtubers review of Colleen Hoover books. There's only soo many ways different people can talk about the same flaws before it gets boring" DyviaG: "Today I gonna review some infamous Colleen Hoover books" Me: "HELL YEAH! THAT'S THE GOOD STUFF!!!"

Agreed. That being said, having one or two narratively-important s*x scenes actually play out is fine IMHO, even explicitly. Though, you know, it would be nice if some of those were actually healthy depictions and all that. I guess it's just when the story is all about the s*x and erotica (or worse, the story grinds to a halt in favor of the s*x) that I personally have an issue with it, in the same way I sometimes have an issue with people cutting out s*xual content that can serve a narrative purpose because they're on the other extreme, you know? I am particularly annoyed by lesbian relationships lacking good s*xual representation (whether both are cis women or not) because of fears of pandering to "the male gaze" or something like that.
@@NiarahHawthorne Definitely. The stuff that irks me the most is unrealistic depictions of s*x or romanticizing abuse/s*xual assault. The latter is, in my opinion, a huge problem in ANY writing. But I can understand the value of scenes like that to help drive the plot.
