Your words Jack Edwards that you spoke as "Metaphors can be used to capture your feelings and sentiments without opening the wounds all over again" got me thinking " Does Jack ever realise how sometimes, in the middle or corner of his utterance somewhere, one that he perhaps, barely considers noticing, let alone a reflection on it, he makes me realise that beauty can still be there even when you're not having anything so grand as such to look at?"

The spine of The Marvels looks like that because it matches Brian Selznick's other two middle grade books! Like yeah, it is a little disappointing compared to the cover, but it looks really cool on the shelf next to Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck.
Oh my word I love the curious incident of the dog and the nighttime, it’s one of my faves (the play was also my GcSE text for Drama). A book similar to that which is probably my fave book is Can you see me by Libby Scott and Rebecca wescott, it follows an 11 year old autistic girl called tally in her first term at secondary school, it’s amazing and I cried at several points, it also felt so real to me, like so many parts were so realistic of what year 7 is like, like the people in the class, the teachers, things people say ect. Libby Scott is an 11 year old autistic girl herself who writes these diary entries throughout that are Tally’s, based off her own experiences. It also contains information about autistic traits and the good and bad sides of it. The book is also based off of multiple autistic peoples experiences with school. And as someone who had a sucky time with people in year 7 it defiantly brought back a lot of memories, which is something to be mindful of. Tho it is very very good and highly recommend.
Except that the Curious Incident was written by an allistic man who did zero research on autism. You want more books like Can you see me? Then read shit from ACTUAL autistic authors & stop giving money to someone who didn't even bother to do his research
@@BooksandBuns sorry I didn’t realise this so will not recommend the book anymore. Thank you for bringing my attention to this. I have read a few books by actually autistic authors that I’ve found, however they are hard to come by (and I have done by own research on this but always looking for good recs if you have any- i don’t mind either way but I’m always looking to learn more)
If you’ve never read Brian Selznick’s other books, The Invention of Hugo Cabret (which got adapted into the Martin Scorsese film Hugo) and Wonderstruck, you absolutely need to. They’re done in the same style as The Marvels and they’re both masterpieces
I commented this as a reply but thought I'd comment normally too for others to see: If you want to read brilliant neurodivergent characters from an own voices author please read A Kind of Spark and Show Us Who You Are by Elle McNicoll. They're amazing books and have autistic protagonists. Show also has ADHD rep too! Some of my favourite books of all time!
I have to say that I'm disappointed that you mention Curious Incident without disclaiming that Mark Haddon, an abled man, wrote a portrayal of autism with ZERO research, while also including harmful representation and literal child abuse and gaslighting to a character while justifying that treatment. It's extremely disheartening that Olivia also recommended it. Basic research will show you that Haddon didn't even apologize after being called out on his lazy process for writing this book. Please read books and promote books by autistic and ND writers.
@@katiasapoznikova4067 i’m sorry but literally shut up. you have no idea how exhausting it is to see work about autistic people written by neurotypicals (who obviously couldn’t be bothered to learn anything real about autism) constantly be promoted over work by people with actual lived experience as autistics. it’s not jack’s fault in my opinion, or Olivia’s, because society has done a truly awful job at educating people about ableism, but it is absolutely worth mentioning and our feelings are valid. i think it’s obvious that Jack cares about neurodivergent representation, but there is absolutely room for him to improve. also, whoever “y’all” is are not being sensitive. (and if by y’all you meant autistic people...wtf.)
I'm so sorry for not disclaiming the fact that Mark Haddon is an abled man -- I think because I knew this in my own head it didn't cross my mind to mention, but this was wrong. I listened to some podcasts about Curious Incident where a few people with autism said they resonated with the book which is why I felt comfortable recommending it (and a few autistic people have commented here saying they loved it), but I definitely should have looked further into the criticism. I wanted to make sure I said that it obviously wasn't representative of every autistic person, and tried to stress how I just felt like this one particular character was very well developed (in my opinion), but I should have discussed further. I'll try better next time to research critiques!
Just wanted to add that this book is particularly harmful to the autistic community because it's stupidly popular and it's constantly recommended as the best book when it comes to autism (mainly by neurotypical people) It's written from the perspective of the autistic boy by a neurotypical author. It makes 0 sense and I'd say the fact that some autistic people's experience matches the main character's is completely valid, but pure luck. That's not mark haddon's experience to write about. It's the same as white authors writing black characters. The likelihood is it's both
I think a lot autistic people have criticised Mark Haddon's novel for its portraial of autism (even tho it's not necessarily called that in the book I think?)... that's why I was kinda hesistant to read it until now, the comments on this video have confirmed that.
You should react to Bulgarian literature. It's actually really good. The two I recommend are the most famous novels: Under the Yoke by Ivan Vazov and Tobacco by Dimitar Dimov

Jack I really want you to read and review "dear martin" it's basically about racism, I am not going to start talking about it because I won't stop but I think you might like it.
As someone who loves "The Curious incident of the dog in the night time", seeing the criticisms against it is really frustrating because people say that it doesn't represent neurodivergence in a way most people can relate to, which I think is missing the point. The book wasn't written for neurodivergent people, and it wasn't written for neurotypical people either. Christopher is definitely neurodivergent, but his character isn't meant to be relatable, it's just a storytelling device and a character trait. For example, if someone wrote a book with someone who had stereotypical but not entirely accurate OCD might not be the best lens to look through to understand the struggles of people with the disorder, but it does show a character struggle and a reality the character has to grapple with, as well as a unique pov. What you want to call it doesn't change anything and in the case of the curious incident there is no specific neurodivergence stated, it's just to portray a story through a perspective most other don't, whether it be entirely realistic to an irl parallel or not.
