- 8 IMPORTANT Composition Tips for Better Photos (Re-upload)
So, you’re looking to improve your photography and you’re (rightfully) told that composition is the key to a great photo. You proceed to read up on compositional rules and you realise there’s a lot to learn. The rule of thirds, the golden spiral, the phi grid, the Fibonacci sequence, leading lines, arabesques and dynamic symmetry. It all looks very complex and confusing.
You examine bodies of work taken by a variety of well-respected photographers, but rarely find any examples that fit with these rules you’ve read about. In fact, most of these images almost read like a list of case studies showing what not to do.
You’re confused and overwhelmed and really don’t know where to start.
The problem is that composition is a massive subject and learning all the grid systems and ratios is only one tool in your visual toolbox. So let me give you 8 simple tips to get you started on improving your composition.

❌❌❌ *RE-UPLOAD* ❌❌❌
*My original video got taken down because it thought a portrait of clothed children taken in 1992 by Sally Mann **_"𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚛𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚎𝚖𝚘𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚊𝚕 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚙𝚑𝚢𝚜𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚕 𝚠𝚎𝚕𝚕-𝚋𝚎𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚘𝚏 𝚖𝚒𝚗𝚘𝚛𝚜"_*
*Sorry if you were waiting for my next video. That one is almost finished and should be up very soon. At least this has given me the chance to edit this video a bit and add some new content.*
I clicked on this so fast 😭 I'll watch it anyways. I will eagerly await the next new upload
I shall dutifully rewatch this one in the meantime!
@@Mvil9 It's almost finished. Could've done without this today distracting me from finishing it. Thanks for commenting. The previous video was my most popular upload with over 3M views. This will hit my traction on my channel, so the more audience engagement on this re-upload, the better.
Surprised you included Annie’s photo!
@@jamiewindsor ofc absolutely love your work, it always reminds me there's so much room to play when it comes to how you photograph. The long exposure video was in my mind yesterday I was looking over "Silent World" I've desperately wanted to recreate it. I think I will try to today. Thanks for all you do.
This is easily the best photography channel on the internet. No obsession with gear, just technique and art.
As much as I adore Jamie's work, DAMN I hate statements like this, which can now be found on just about every video on the subject. It's subjective. It's not a contest. And you haven't sampled all of the channels out there, so you're just being hyperbolic for attention.
If you love it as much as you say, you'd better be buying all of Jamie's preset packs like I did. :P
@@justinkingery2489 Damn you're judgemental. I have no use for Jamie's presets because I don't use that software. I'm a debian user. It is the best channel that I have found and that is my opinion so you can suck it up.
@@drooghead That you've found? Boom. There you go---an honest, subjective opinion. You don't have to say, " The greatest channel on the Internet!!!"
@@justinkingery2489 Haven't you got anything better to do or do you need a hug? This isn't a scientific treatise so why are you making such a big deal out of it?
@@drooghead I can tell you're the kind of person who blows everything out of proportion. Chill out.
❤ So happy to see a Jamie Windsor video pop up! ❤
Thanks. Sorry it's a re-upload. New one out very soon.
@@jamiewindsor I don't care, enjoyed it non the less! You've always picked quality over quantity, that's why I follow. It's always worth the wait.
+1
Yes indeed
So, this is the third video of yours I'm watching, and my oh my is it interesting.
UA-cam has become so saturated with "the one secret about light in your photos ! PRO TIPS" and then you watch a 9minutes video with two ads and two sponsor breaks to tell you about the flippin exposure triangle...
And your videos take the time necessary to properly explore your subject, it shows research, it shows dedication and it actually helped me. For example, the calibration tool isn't something I used creatively at all, and now I can't wait to go to lightroom and play around some unedited photos on my computer. Most of all it gives me faith and inspiration to shoot some content, makes me happy that there is still a place for creators on YT.
The good thing about the re-upload is that I'm watching the video again now. I think I discovered you through this video and I was a fan after a few seconds. Your style is unique, I still love it 🤍
Of the countless you tubers, you're my favorite, the only one I look forward to, and even more so, Jamie Windsor is the only one whose advice I thoroughly follow.
Tks a million Jaime!
When I die, I’d like you to perform my eulogy. I want people walking away thinking “I never really understood him but that speech really cleared things up for me… probably should have been nicer to the guy.” Great video. Stay well.
Photographer of over 30 years and I think this is the best photo channel on youtube. I always look forward to your videos. Such a good job. Thank you.
Oh my gosh, I almost cried when I saw the notification for your new video! I literally check for your videos every single day and I was so excited to see a new one! I've missed you so much and I'm so happy that you're back to creating. You are one of the most kind and talented people I know, and your art is truly inspiring.
I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for being you and for sharing your gift with the world. Your videos make my day so much brighter and I've learned so much from you. I'm always so eager to watch your new videos and I rewatch them multiple times.
You are an incredible artist and I'm so grateful for your work. Please keep creating and sharing your art with the world! We need it more than ever.
Sending you all my love and support!❤
Your videos are always helpful to be a better photographer with a sense of art rather than gear and tech.
Thank you Jamie and keep it up.
Sorry to hear of the trouble you've had. Thanks for uploading again, great video!
Your videos are always a joy to watch, hope you get back up to 3M views
Jamie, your videos inspire me to take better photos. Thanks for sharing your expertise and congratulations on half a million subs, you deserve them all
Good to see you back! Your video not only is a joy to watch, but also full of little gems.
Jamie, I really have to commend you on the way you create and structure your videos. You are a great educator and I love how passionate you are about doing this. Great job! Keep going!
Thank you.
I'm so happy you seem to have recovered well from last year. Thanks for all the tips and tricks, as always!
I like your video editing choices. Not repetitive, simple and unexpected. That O changing into 8 for example. Neat and quirky, but not distracting from the subject.
a nice reminder to think about all the composition possibilities - love the structure
Your channel always has the best tips, info and comments, I don't follow a lot of photography channels but I can see it right away, you teach the photographer to use his actual inner camera on how to recognize a photograph before actually pointing the camera, each video is inspiring, well narrated and with clear examples, I don't practice photography more than casually capturing a moment with my phone, but I'm a designer and if something is true, to create good design you have to train your eye to recognize good design, it is the foundation, so it is the same for photography, the rest is practice and letting your brain do the rest.
Hats off to you Jamie!
thanks for the re-upload, it was very helpful
I'm so glad you are back, I love your videos.
Your videos are truly the BEST! Thank you!
Your videos are like a gift every time. I wish they would come more often!
New one out very soon.
The editing in this video is insane
Best photo channel ever
I was wondering where this video went! I was trying to find it a bit ago, and couldn't see it anywhere. Glad to see it came back, sorry about UA-cam being dumb.
Quality over quantity. Jamie, you're a beautiful artist xxx
Awesome video!
For me the best single piece of advice is taking care of the figure-ground relationship. That, beside choosing well your background makes a world of difference.
Nice to revisit this. Great content. Thank you very much!
Hi Jamie, I will eagerly watch this again ! Cant wait for your new content
Agreed. Great to revisit!
A great teacher Jamie & very inspiring. Many thanks❤
I rewatch your videos on occasion anyway. 😅
Thank you for sharing this content with us, so informative and helpful, I think this it’s important for aspiring photographers to really pay attention to these videos, save them.. rewatch them and practice all of these elements, I feel it will give us a much more “balanced” and well rounded approach to photography.
I felt so understood and validated at the start of the video… made me think I might have come to the right place 😊
cannot wait for your new one! I can always use a reminder :)
Still love this video (the intro!!! 😮), so happy to watch over and over again! 👏🏻
This is great. A good reminder to get back to basics and take my time.
Loved the old version of this video, so I should love this one as well. ❤
I normally am not active in the comments, but I'm frustrated by youtube's decision to take down your original upload and would like to help boost this video's engagement. You are a huge inspiration to me, I'm an illustrator and photographer, and your videos are both so informative and entertaining. I love seeing your passion for the craft and I hope that this situation hasn't demotivated you from creating videos. I look forward to your next upload!
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Yet another great video Jamie. What I really enjoy about your content is that you always leave us something to think about and something to inspire us as photographers.
So good to see a video of yours again
Jamie, thank you so much! This is exactly what I`ve been waiting for .... ✨
Wondered why this was reuploaded. Thanks for the explanation. This was the first video I saw from your channel and it helped me a lot. Thank you for making learning about the art of photography so easy to understand :)
your videos are always amazing but the HHGG homage in the rule of thirds was off the charts. Production values are unmatched as always. Hope your health is going ok. Take care
You have one of my absolute favourite UA-cam channels. Much appreciated 🫶
Great video, glad you got it back up 👍
I'm incredibly happy seeing that we got a new video from Jamie. I know I'm gonna watch another masterpiece. Thanks so much!
It has already been said in the comments: one of the best channels worldwide. I totally agree. Thank you, Jamie
Very happy to see a new video from you 👍
Funny to realise how much I learned about composition from this very video.
Such a great video - why UA-cam took down the original is an absolute joke! I hope they reinstate it and apologise to you
Very good summary for beginners. Thank you.
Wonderful, Jamie!!😊
Great video as always!!! 🎉
Very glad you reuploaded. Massively useful guide to composition.
A wonderful video, Jamie. It's great to have you back - you've been missed. And here is to hoping you are feeling better and all is going well.
Absolutely happy to see your work again! Stay well and keep inspiring!
OMG! You’re back! 😍
Man, you described my entire last 20 years in that intro...
Brilliant video, keep up the amazing work
Great video! I hope it gets al lot of attention (again!)
Great video Jamie.
Watched this one before and now watching it again. Can't get enough of your videos, great quality content Jamie! Keep it up 🙌🏻
As always, a Jamie Windsor YT video informs and entertains. Thx for your insight and enlightenment.
Absolutly brilliant thank you for going to the extra effort and re-uploading. Still watch a lot of your old work and looking forward to the next bout of videos you’re going to release.
I had seen the original but loved to watch the re-load also, although I think their was no reason to take the original down. Jamie, you have a gift of combining art, each of your videos is a work of art on their own, and teaching!
Good to see you Jamie! Hope you're doing well 👍😃
Your videos help me understand and learning photography by myself back on 2019
A pain in the ass that UA-cam takes down your content! The original video helped me so much with my composition and I hope this one can help others too
So simple but so effective.❤
Upload or re-upload, I've hit the play button 😌
Hope you're alright Jamie, cheers !
Great content - so many years! Thank you!
Been a minute since I’ve watched this, so I’m happy to give it another view for support. Probably the video that originally introduced me to your channel.
Lovely thank You again Jamie❤
Very nicely presented… Worthwhile watching!
Great as always
Super video again. Design and content
Wonderful selection of samples, great video, thanks!!
Thanks for the video!
This one is my favorite video from you since you have posted it the first time.
Jamie you’re the photography UA-cam goat
Great video Jamie as always
Thank you for reuploading because I missed the original .
Nice to see a new upload and always worth revisiting your sage words of wisdom. Look forward to your new content :-)
Excellent tutorial!
Thank you for your videos. I really miss them.
Thanks. New one coming out very soon.
I saw this pop up snd thought "weird, did jamie run out of content and is reposting now?" But then I saw your community post. Sorry that happened, man! I'm doing my part by rewatching
These are good reminders, thanks. It's a pity though that I can't save the video, though. I have this list with photography tips, tricks and reminders and this video would fit perfectly.
Woot! Great to see you back! Be well good sir.
great video Jamie
Missing you man. Can’t wait for you to come back! Hope all is well!
Great content!
Composition, from it's Latin roots, means "position together"... The elements need to be positioned in a way that they work as a whole. That's it. I sometimes use a Leica VIDOM viewfinder. The image is flipped, and you can also turn it upside down. It's a great tool for balancing the shot.
Great Video
I love how you arranged your Photoshop Workspace. Would you mind sharing it?.
¡Ánimo!
Great Stuff Man :) People Love Your Content :)
This is why I download some videos. The long exposure video is your best video and I had to download it jus in case. I hate it when I look for vids and they are taken down.
Hope your well!
Shame on youtube! Keep up the excellent work 🔥
