How to have BETTER IDEAS
Every great creative project that’s ever been made - whether it was photography, a book, a film, a video game, an invention - have all had one key factor factor in common that makes them great, and that was their being built around a good idea. A solid and creative idea is the most fundamental aspect to any project. It’s what holds it all together.
But how to do we train our brains to think of good ideas? Let me take you through a 4-step process.

It’s like when someone sees a piece of contemporary or conceptual art and say, “I could have done that!” To which the answer is, “Yes, but you didn’t”.
No it's not. It is not like that. It is nothing like that at all.
@Chris Patmore I could have written your comment!
@@Nicolas-rd2qk 😏
It’s like you and everyone who upvoted you didn’t watch the video ...
@@feralmode well, Jamie also liked this comment so...
I just experienced this yesterday in the bathtub. Someone recently told me "maybe you should portrait your perfectionism instead" as a spite on me saying I wasn't happy with a picture I took - and it stuck with me. Now yesterday night, way past midnight and when I'm usually awake, it came to me that this perfectionism is hard to display, but the bits and pieces of it in our everyday life are happening every time. And then my bathtub almost flooded the the room because I filled it to the brim while thinking and that's when it struck me: "Perfectionism - all or nothing." Grabbed my camera and shot the first image of what might become a series of things that are done all the way or not at all - even if the outcome .ight be negative (like here, the water flowing over when going inside).
It's gonna be interesting times from now on, because the mind is sharpened and the eyes are focused to see something that was always there but never shown in its own light.
Man did I miss your videos. You really have great teaching skills.
Thank you. I haven't gone anywhere. The pandemic has just slowed down my production schedule a bit.
This video is GOLDEN, the quality that Jamie puts into his videos really shows here!
Thank you. I’m glad you like them.
He is the definition of creative mind, Jamie I would love to see a film from you even if it is a short one. I believe you would be a great director and cinematographer
Less is most definitely more. Many other UA-cam content creators have long since ran out of ideas and are now repackaging their same old stuff over and over just to keep posting 1-2 videos a week just to stand still. It's stale and it shows. Jamie on the other hand only posts when he has something new to say and that on UA-cam is so refreshing. Bravo sir!!
Well said!
and the "photographers" with nothing to say almost always let you know the camera that they shot the episode on in the title in the hope of capturing an audience from that brand's fanboys. The content becomes a secondary consideration.
I have to agree. While all artist/creatives should revisit or update their ideals, post and tutorials... It's important to communicate things from a different perspective to provide more insight. Jamie does an excellent job with leaving some "meat on the bone" for viewers to adopt these concepts and use accordingly.
I'm just 7 mins into the video, and this is more valuable than almost all other videos I've ever watched on this topic.
Apart from being a filmmaker, You are a scholar, sir.
( and also an AE senpai )
happened to me, but I was only 45 sec in and knew it would be great! haha
Part of me wishes you would release these more frequently Jamie. But that’s a bit selfish. Great content takes great time and effort. Thanks for another inspirational piece.
Thanks. I am working full time on UA-cam, but the pandemic is leaving me with not as many working hours in the day as I’d like.
Your channel is so much more than just a photography channel. It's almost a lifestyle channel. I find it very inspiring with lots of humanity.
Good God man, your videos need to be given a cinema style big screen release internationally for everyone that's a fan of visual arts. The editing, presentation and especially the use of Pacman to get your point across was amazing!
Wow. This level of profound philosophical inquiry was not what I expected..
Love it.
Dude, this is brilliant. Being a guy who calls himself goodphotoideas I am humbled. I need to work harder. I'd also like to take the opportunity to compliment you on your video editing. You're a master.
This channel is fast become less about photography and more a sound philosophical blue print towards living a fulfilled life. I have a noted dopamine response when I receive a UA-cam notification from this channel, which to me, is further evidence that, despite the theories that technology maybe driving us apart, but that many are seeking out mentors that speak truth and give advice on subjective thought, individuality, creativity and encourage a self reflective honest conversation with the self. The exact opposite of the main stream media narrative, in my humble opinion. Thanks JW
A student once asked the chemist Linus Pauling how he had so many good ideas. “Simple” said Pauling “have lots of ideas and throw out the bad ones”
No other photography related UA-cam channel has better production. Just a treat to watch your videos. And this one dropped just on time.
You made me pick up my camera many times when I felt like “why bother, there are people out there who can do this much better than I can as a hobbyist”. Thank you, Jamie.
Jamie, I hate you ❤️. You make me watch your videos multiple times; they’re so freaking good! First, I just watch it to get an intro. Then, I watch with the sound off. Then, I watch it, er listen to it, with the picture off or not in my view. And then I watch it all over again. And after every few weeks, I could be caught watching some old video again! Thanks for all that you do, from the bottom of my heart. This is Hollywood quality work.
I thought of asking strangers to pose together for pictures before, but my anxiety said no.
You just need to do stuff like that. It’s the only way to make that kind of anxiety go away. It’s liberating though.
Heck I can't even ask a stranger to pose for me :(
I really want to try into portraits but need to get over this shyness.
I write comments very rarely, but more rarely I feel so encouraged. So I find it necessary to thank you for this inspiration! I appreciate that moments when you realize, that the world around you is indescribably big and there are so much, that you can picture in countless ways, so much and I'm feeling this way because of you, so, thank you! Don't stop what you are doing. It is really helpful.
And i wish to everyone, who's reading this, not to be embarrassed of your ideas and thoughts. I believe in you!
Also sorry for my English. It's not my native language
Thank you for making this!
In my opinion, you're the most clever and inspiring video creator on UA-cam, your work is so precious! ! Thanks for all that effort you put in your videos, and for sharing all your wisdom and knowledge.
I had to pause video 3 times, because I got so many ideas just bz watching, tnx man!
Purchasing retro presets 100% :D
Step number 2,5 .
Ask the right questions to yourself every day.
This way you will start giving solutions and boost your creativity.
Bering creative might not mean you'll have the best idea, but the best ideas came from creative people.
Great video. Thank you.
"The unfed mind devours itself. Water your garden." - Tash Sultana
You put in 2000% effort in all your videos man, and it really shows. Nicely done once again!
The sheer amount of hours and effort put into producing this video should not be understated. Thank you for taking the time to make such golden content in a space where quantity seems to be rewarded more than quality. Always thoughtful, always top-notch. Thank you Jamie!
I mean..the quality of your content and how you decide to edit them, I could watch hours and hours without getting borred.
You are talented AF, I know that it's a lot of hard work, but you also have the 'talent factor' and that's rare
This is the channel I've been hoping was somewhere in the plethora of photography videos on UA-cam. Thank you!
Jamie Windsor can have a brilliant career as a life coach for creative people.
You’re such s driving force! My mind feels so fueled up every time I watch your content. Thank you!!
The one and only Jamie Windsor! Every single one of your videos is a visual pleasure and a thought provoker. Thank you for your input, man. I got tired of all other YT channels, trying to get off of social media all together, but i´ll allways take time for your upload. I enjoy your LR presets a lot, just started to dip into video so will most likely check your video luts as well. Wish you all the best, looking forward to your future thoughts!
I hit the button "LIKE" before I watch your video and I know it's gonna be great. Respect.
you mean you’re clicking like on autopilot? That’s not very smart.
Terrific! I honestly have not seen a post this well balanced between content and delivery in years! Well done on an amazing piece of creative work
Jamie, you are a great inspiration - "The Philosophical Photographer"
DUDE! was just thinking about your videos last night, and felt it had been a minute since hearing from you.. Appreciate the time and effort these take to put together - Much love from Australia
I flipping love a Jamie Windsor video!
I think often (or at least for me this is true) people are quick to dismiss a good idea, just because it look so obvious that it doesn't seem possible you were the first to come up with it. It happens all the time to think "sure somebody else has already thought of this". Most of the times it is also true, which makes it even more difficult to stop thinking that way.
I think this is very true. During my design career, there were countless times I came up with something in the first 10 mins and then spent an additional week developing and rethinking, only to throw it all out and go back to the initial idea at the end. I've learnt that it's not wasted time though, it's all part of the process.
Well... your channel is one of the most inspiring ones UA-cam. Period.
Of all the channels that I am subscribed, only two are inspirational. Jamie’s and Sean Tucker’s.
Don’t ignore number three. So many times I had a good idea for a concept, and I thought I gonna remember it. In a week, I couldn’t remember.
Jamie. You are brilliant. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you. This is beautiful.
5:04 love the luminar joke :D
I wait, every month, in the hope that you post again!
I am always working on new content. The pandemic has slowed stuff down though.
Wow...Renaldi's pictures are stunning and impactful
Those project ideas at the beginning were fantastic. Another brilliantly produced video full of great advice, and not just for photographers.
dude you are something else. i always find your videos so inspiring, they give me, literally, physical motivation to go out and take photos. thanks for everything
As usual, well thought out. Inspiration comes from watching other people who are inspirational. That's why I keep watching your videos.
At least you got the idea to create a you tube video on this topic while many popular photographic youtuber praising or bashing new camera/lens. Amazing content as ever Jamie!!!
Your videos are not only very good in a practical way, but also a theoretical way. They’re entertaining to watch and chew on. Thanks for doing what you do.
Jamie don't stop producing these brilliant videos
This is the one thing that all schools should teach first to all students. But the teachers don't know how to teach this and they pass on that lack for generations. And those in power prefer drones to run companies and do management as opposed to competing with them in business. Well done.
Thank you so much for another insightful video. I also appreciate the masterful videos you produce, I'm blown away by their production, design, and concise content. You not only "talk the talk but walk the walk" well done.
Fantastic video as usual! You have such a talent for condensing complex topics in such an engaging and accessible way.
I just picked up that Retro Video Assets pack and it's my second pack from you! Thank you for making them so affordable - love your videos!
Thanks for this. I'm teaching photo classes in the States and I'm using some of your videos. Love them.
I think I have seen this video at least 10 times since it came out and I still don't know what you are saying because I keep getting distracted by the amazing editing and motion graphics. You are an inspiration. Thank you!
I do want to know how to think of good ideas. Maybe one day I will resist the visuals and actually pay attention to what you are saying 😄
I'm so glad I discovered this channel. A lot of interesting content shared in such a unique style. And I'm not even into photography.
Love your videos, your mind, humor, and your perspective. You just became the first person I'm supporting on Patreon. It feels only fair since I have come to rely on your brilliantly produced videos. Thanks for giving us such intelligent high quality content to look forward to. Truly valuable.
Yours is one of the best UA-cam channel. Period.
Thank you for this video as im watching this before our 2 year old wakes up and I have to be daddy again, the husband and a colleague... what I all love but we are also individuals with our own ideas, talents and own purpose in life. We need to spend more time with our selfs to bring clarity to our own thoughts and ideas that makes us happy. Not only the extra long showertime till our woman tells us we are spoiling water... this video Jamie was a eye opener and helpfull. As most time I spend on my phone throughout the day is a waste of time...
From the first video I saw from your channel, I notice your calmness and also artistic and even scientific approach of yours in each topic. This, not only hasn't changed but its getting better.
Jamie... best video yet, keep it up :)
I studied media design for 2 years, I've always been really good at picking up computer programs but absolutely shit at coming up with ideas. I felt that the whole course was aimed at people that were incredibly creative but didn't have the tools to express it, while I was the exact opposite.
I wish I had someone who could teach me how to be creative. I will try to implement the things from this video, and maybe I'll feel differently. Thanks for making it
Just finished watching this video and I'm heading out for a bike riding and photograph the world around me, see new stuff and open my mind for the great ideas. Thanks for the inspiration
Watching your videos is like watching a documentary on photography on television. Great work!
Another fantastic essay that will stick with me. Between the graphics and the content, this is state of the art youtubing.
Preach! Jamie you're spot on with everything hinging on the idea and this has to be the most valuable videos on the internet for coming up with ideas. Thanks for breaking these ideas down (no pun intended) I'm going to try these out in 2021.
I had no IDEA after watching it ... but let's respect, your editing skills are stunning! 👍
I'm following UA-cam channels about photography for four years now and so far you and Dan Milnor are the only two UA-camrs who talked about the importance of reading for photography. On the one hand this really surprises me, on the other hand one glance at Instagram tells you that for most people photography is about looks and not about communicating something. (Disclaimer: of course, I'm guilty of this too)
Never dissapoints and always inspires!
Besides being really helpful, I love the many little details in your videos. Especially seamless transitions that are... well, seamless, as in "not distracting", but interesting, often even subtle, but also often things that require a bit of work.
This is gold! Absolute GOLD! So so helpful! A great and [IMHO] proper view into actually **HOW** to generate ideas!! Thankyou, thankyou Jamie!
Jamie you are a smart man. Your videos have real content and make my head spin. You are master mind instigator, adding a good touch of masterful editing to your videos and making them flow easily and captivate the audience. Watching your videos is a real pleasure
What a brilliant video. Thank you for this- from start to finish it was fantastic...I didn't even mind the ads, and watched all the way through the end- very rare for me.
Another great piece. Please keep making them.
God, Jamie, every time I think, “huh, where has Jamie been? I hope he didn’t retire,” you come out with a video that makes me think, “damn, I’m glad Jamie took his time and came up with THIS.”
How is the quality of your video's SO good! Amazing video with all the connections to psychology and neuroscience. Well done, Jamie. 👏🏼
I really like not expecting a video from your channel every day or week. Seeing your videos it’s like listen to music: you hear a new cd and then there’s a time to create again, finally one day, new cd. The same is here and every time so enjoyable. Cheers Jamie.
Quite easily the most important video posted on UA-cam this week. Or month. Or so far this year.
I just love the retro game console presentation
I love your videos I wish you had more, but I can tell you put so much energy into your concepts and presentations. I was blown away by your intro in boring wedding photos. Looking forward to more videos.
Let me tell you, your you tube channel is very insightful. I get really creative and more motivated after watching them
What an incredible video and idea. Well done Jamie.
LOVE your work!!!! Brilliant as usual!!!
Jeez. I could watch your videos all day.. thought provoking. You inspire me to reboot my day in a new way.. thanks..
Amazing video, I find when I am in a parked car at night listening to music and talking to multiple people threw snapchat my brain goes into overdrive mode and huge amounts of ideas come to me. So a combination of music, communication and the peaceful setting can lead to your mind going into the “zone”.
I have never seen any channel sharing this valuable knowledge for free. Jamie, you are phenomenal.
Love the quality of your films and the effort you put it.
Incredible video Jamie, happy holidays!
You teach and inspire in one arena with your topic and simultaneously teach and inspire in a completely separate one with your vfx and practical-transitions. You're killing it Jamie! Keep going!
The amount of time, energy, and creativity you put into your visual aids is mind-boggling
Another awesome video Jamie. Your Lightroom presets rock! Look forward to the next video
Always happy to see a new video from Jamie in my YT feed. So inspiring!
I was in need of this. Thank you so much for sharing such quality content presented in such a creative way. Take care out there.
Always excited when you upload! Learned a lot from ur vids.
Thank you, Jamie, for putting so much effort into your videos. It’s an absolute joy to watch 👍🏻
Your idea to produce this video in itself is a great one that i wouldn't have thought of. Damn...great stuff
Very well done Jamie! Insightful and inspiring... I really appreciate all the effort put into the special effects and editing. Thanks!
OH MY GOD i always got my best ideas when i was working out and i thought it was just a coincidence. jamie you have some of the best content on youtube hands down thank you brother
The editing and use of old tech in this video is amazing. So well produced.
Not only is this video incredibly well structured and informative, but also visually stunning.
Multiple times I went back 20 seconds to rewatch an animation. Amazing!
Great video Jamie. I always enjoy when a video of yours comes out - really stretches my brain.
I love your videos! They're always so hopeful and encouraging and HONEST !!
