What’s happening in this Shutter Island movie clip?
Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) reveals a terrible truth to Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) : Teddy is actually Andrew Laeddis and has been a patient of Shutter Island for two years. Even though he refuses Cawley and Chuck’s (Mark Ruffalo) explanation at first, Teddy progressively realizes how much he lost his grip on reality.

What’s the movie Shutter Island about?
Discover Shutter Island : the critically acclaimed adaptation directed by Martin Scorsese of the novel by Dennis Lehano. This magnificent thriller released in 2010, features Leonardo DiCaprio as Federal Teddy Daniels, and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), two U.S. marshals assigned to investigate the disappearance of a psychiatric facility patient.
The two of them will look into the case of missing Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer) directly on the Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. There they will meet with Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) the lead psychiatrist and head of the institution, and begin to suspect that the whole incident as well as their presence there is part of something way darker. Knowing one of the patients, and having an agenda of his own, Teddy Daniels will try to stay sane in this most disturbing island.

Ben Kingsley was perfect in this film, what we took as a sinister attitude of hiding something was actually his frustration and patience wearing thin that his treatment for Teddy still isn't working, and he makes it translate over really well. By the end of the film we actually felt bad that we suspected him because we can see he really did care about his patients.

That right there was one of the best things about the movie and is what makes the twist so great despite a lot of people calling it predictable: It was supposed to be predictable and cliche. The entire movie and plot is seen through Teddy's eyes and that's how we interpret the film in the beginning. We see a sketchy, evil mental hospital with its gothic architecture on a dark island and we instantly assume there's something bad happening here because that's what Teddy thinks in his mind. And then at the end we realize that none of that was true, the Mental hospital is actually a well renowned and well funded hospital with good doctors.

I love all the small little details and hints we got throughout this movie that you pick up on in second rewatch. The fact that the guards who were supposed to be searching for the missing patient all appeared to be bored and uninterested and are not searching. The chains in the boat at the beginning of the movie. The strange looks everyone gives Teddy/Andrew. The fact that his “partner” the doctor has a hard time taking off his holster, despite allegedly being a US Marshall who wears a gun daily. There’s so many, but the movie does such a good job of stringing us along until it’s time for the big reveal. Incredible movie, one of my all time favorites.

In the last scene when DiCaprio seemingly confirms that he has relapsed (even though he has not) by referring to Mark as his partner, Ruffalo looks at Kingsley and the German doctor to signal the same.
