Edward was still wise in Seasons 6-7 as evidenced in the episode It’s Only Snow. But Season 9-12 he just wasn’t Edward at least in his spotlight episodes.
Edward was fine in that episode. Being excited about something can happen to anyone, regardless of age or experience. I do not think he was out of character in that episode.
@eddiethefriendlytenderengine heck, also in series 8 episode "Edward the Great," where Edward is pretty much in character. And that was the only good Edward episode in the hit model era.
the *only* thing that I and probably everyone else likes about this episode is rocky himself. despite his debut episode being a dud he himself is quite in underrated character in my opinion, he has an amazing design, he’s one of the few hit era characters to actually last till the end of the show, and that line micheal brandon improvised in the us dub is just timeless.
While I think that the HiT-Era is overhated and underrated, I will definitely agree that Edward Strikes Out is really bad. They should have given the role to James.
James wouldn't make the episode any better. It would still be a generic episode. James wouldn't have a good reason to hate Rocky either, just like Edward and Gordon.
I think the best way to make the episode better is to have Edward be in character. Instreadbof Edward hating on Rocky, I'd have Gordon think that Rocky is a jerk without even getting to talk to him. And when Edward gets to the signal instead of him causing the accident, it would be Gordon who bumps into him. Harvey comes to clean up the mess, but it takes him too long, and Gordon will come down the line thinking its clear nut derails. Then Edward goes to get Rocky to help, but when Edward brings Rocky to help Gordon, he would just insult Rocky until Edward yells at him to stop insulting Rocky. Then Rocky puts Gordon back on track, and Gordon apologizes, and they all make up. I know this episode ruins Gordon’s character, but I only want to fix Edward's characterization. Hope you like this.
With James’ tendency to mimic what Gordon does, it would have worked a lot better. If James sees Gordon hating on Rocky, it would make sense that he would do the same for no good reason
Yeah, I absolutely hate "Edward Strikes Out" too; it got Edward's character horribly wrong! Seriously, did Hit Entertainment not realise he's supposed to be a wise and kind engine?! 😡 (And I was not expecting those Family Guy clips here.)
2:58 - Not gonna lie, that third option had some potential. It would be interesting to see Edward interact with Diesel 10, even if it is his Calling All Engines! counterpart.
Edward Strikes Out shows that you cannot give Edward so many flaws nor too many episodes just b/c he's the main number 2 - cause then it'll make him even more out of character (the only time he was involved w/ a few mistakes were his first story in the Railway Series, Cows and Bertie's Chase). I rather have him being a supporting character like in S3-5 (which is why I wrote one episode about him in Great Sodor Engines). As for the episode, I don't hate the concept - it's a rather fun one (just had the wrong main character as all). However, do the engines know the main concept of a breakdown train is that they don't have engines? Of course they're not supposed to move, take the breakdown train and they never complain about it. Also, Rocky is an underrated character in my opinion - he works well as a minor character, but he never seems to have any good main spotlight episodes where he's portrayed well but everyone else is OOC (including this, Duck in the Water and Rocky Rescue). Ironically, I remember seeing it via the Story Library Book adaptation of Rocky and I was like 'was this an episode I missed?'. Then I saw it and ultimately I really despise it. I also didn't have Carnival Capers then (and I'm glad I didn't). I do however like Rocky's theme w/ that piano Robert Hartshorne used, Michael Brandon's improv and the crash (even if Gordon would've easily crash into Harvey had those pipes not been there).
I like to think that Edward always had a prejudice against cranes when he was on the Furness Railway (possibly from crane tank engines at the ironworks or boastful cranes on the railway, thanks Kiefer Adams) and that it never really went away, which could explain why he’s seen a good number of times with the breakdown crane. He got over it when Harvey proved himself to be a nice guy but Edward was worried about Harvey when Rocky arrived (although his worries were uprooted). I still don’t like this episode, but there’s a number of rewrites which have down the concept right.
Narrator: Gordon is back on the tracks. Sir Topham Hatt Spoke Sternly to Gordon. Sir Topham Hatt: You have said rude things about Rocky. He proves today that he is very useful, reliable and very helpful to the engines. Narrator: Gordon felt very ashamed and very Silly
Edward Strikes Out should’ve been called Edward And The Runaway Crane and here’s how the episode should’ve been: the episode starts with narrator explaining who Edward is and then it would cut to Edward puffing into Brendam docks to see Gordon and Percy angry and upset. Edward asks them what’s wrong and Gordon tells them that the new crane (Rocky) is very rude and unpleasant and tells him to watch out. Edward heeds Gordon’s warning and then goes to collect his pipe train. When Edward backs downs onto his goods train next to Rocky, Rocky looks down at him and starts making rude remarks towards Edward and tells that he’s old, frail, and useless. Edward knows what Rocky is saying is not true and tells him that he may be old but he’s still quite useful and Rocky then says more rude things to Edward, but Edward ignores him and puffs away when the guard blows his whistle. Later on Henry arrives to collect Rocky and take him to a new location. Rocky says rude things to Henry which obviously makes Henry upset. Henry then pulls Rocky out of the docks and while they’re on Gordon’s hill, the coupling between Henry and Rocky snaps and Rocky becomes a runaway. Rocky races down Gordon’s hill with ever increasing speed. Meanwhile Edward is puffing down the line after finishing delivering the pipes and then a loud HEEELLLP and then Rocky races by Edward and then Edward says ‘oh no, Rocky’s a runaway I must save him’ and then Edward chases after Rocky. It would be a intense runaway and Edward would be able to overtake Rocky and the signalman who change the points so Edward would go onto Rocky’s line and Rocky then slams into Edward and then Edward slams on his breaks to try to slow Rocky down and is then horrified to see Thomas with Annie and Clarabel on the same line as Edward and Edward puts every once of strength he has against Rocky to save Rocky, Thomas, Annie, and Clarabel. Thankfully the signal man changes the points and Edward and Rocky are diverted into a siding and stops mere inches from the buffers. Everyone cheers for Edward for saving Rocky, Thomas, Annie, and Clarabel from a terrible accident and Rocky then apologizes to Edward for being so rude to him and Edward forgives him. The scene would then cut to another of the narrator saying that Edward and Rocky are now good friends and Rocky now helps clean up accidents and also apologized to the other engines that Rocky was rude too. I genuinely wish that THIS was the official episode instead of what we got. Keeping Up With James and Big Strong Henry would’ve been a nice follow up to Edward And The Runaway Crane.
0:35 There Is A Theory As To Why Edward Didn’t Appear In Thomas And The Magic Railroad. That Being That Sense The Fat Controller Is Away On Holiday In That Film, Edward Was Away With Him As The Engine Taking Topham Across England
Gordon would’ve never crashed if Edward got Rocky to pick up the pipes instead of Harvey. Edward was definitely not himself, and wouldn’t have listened to Gordon calling Rocky a “new fangled nonsense”. James would’ve been a better fit for the episode and should’ve been called “James Strikes Out”. And if Edward was his normal self and claiming he didn’t need Rocky’s help, he would’ve been nicer about it.
As a Person who likes Edward, I can relate to this being the Worst Episode of the Old Iron. Like of all characters that they chose for this, it had to be him. Maybe James should have been used. But other than that, Great Review on it D10 and TheMagicRailroadStudios.
When I first watched this episode when I was younger, something felt strange about the episode to me. As I grew older, I found out Edward’s out-of-character behavior was the reason why.
No doubt this is Edward's worst moment, making it easier to see why it shouldn't be mandatory to give Edward leading roles every season. Or... if they really wanted to give Edward a leading role in Series 10, why not Toby's New Roof? Just swap Thomas out for Edward. Simple.
Whats funny is this could probably work as a james episode because i feel like james would want to be like gordon and we have already seen before that he hates diesels so hating cranes doesn't seem very far fetched.
Not gonna beat around the bush with this one. Edward Strikes Out is complete trash. Not only is Edward as out of character as 99% of a certain animated 2019 movie sequel that I shall not name, but the engines don’t know what a crane was even though they were rescued by cranes countless times and even in the previous season (Looking at YOU Gordon.). For crying out loud this episode massacred one of my favorite characters of Thomas (the other being Percy who was covered last time).
Respect for Gordon Any episode about Duncan Hector the horrid Keeping up with James James the second best Dirty work Molly's special special Big strong Henry Its good to be Gordon
Edward and Toby are the only characters from the Steam team where the worst episode of the two is a model episode. At Edward's is "Edward and the mail". Why didn't Edward immediately ask Percy how to drive the mail? Why wasn't there an address on the package? And with Toby "Toby's Truimph". That was really a middle finger to Toby. “Edward strikes out” is kinda meh. I don't hate it but Edward was out of character in this episode. And no James wouldn't make the episode any better because it would still be a generic episode.
Some of the character changes after the HiT buyout make no dense They made Sir Handle Who's way more egocentric than Gordon Into the Edward of the narrow gage engines Toby went from chaotic Edward to diet CGI Henry And this Edward nonsense I don't get it

How about Henry? Couldn't he have been best suited for Edward's worst episode?

And even that is only in one dub. :P

Harvey was stupidly weak in this episode.
