I actually don't know shit, but hear me out
Jake was definitely on point about RDR2 and GOW series. They really set a high benchmark. Not just in game-play mechanics, but in developing a character driven narrative and by making us feel emotions. That's what video games are supposed to be, not rinse and repeating same combat for harder bosses and n number of game-play hours. Even in Ghost of Tsushima, getting a new flute note and playing it in a sunset gives me so much more peace than defeating any bosses.
RDR2 is boring and borderline annoying tho, way overrated
@@n91312 facts, I think almost all Rockstar games are overrated they all play the same, and have some of the worst action gameplay I've ever played
games are about having fun , if u want a story go read a book
@@musashi542 Lmaooooo. How much of an idiot does one have to be to write something this stupid. And N9, you found it boring, that doesn't mean it's overrated.
@@musashi542 I did have fun playing RDR2. The level of details and feeling that you are part of Van Der Linde game is immaculate. So it's a subjective experience of what you call "fun"
Properly made triple A game... that's a huge difference. Most studios don't bother with making good games, but thank you for this done right after so many, just keeps getting better.
Fr this should be the standard for triple A games. Nothing lower,
Jakes channel deserves so much more attention. You can tell he loves what he’s doing . Much love bro, keep doing what you’re doing!
Cool
Fenrir scene helped me release some pain from losing my last dog in 2017, i know exactly how that felt from that scene, 7am release day and crying wtf...love this game. Even the lore is well written and deep, so well put together, this is the height of what gaming means and can be to the people that play them.
Love hearing that, Wes. Fuck yeah video games. Thanks for sharing and I'm sorry for your loss.
@@JakeBaldino F.P.S. love it!
It's so rare for a game to switch genres and knock it out of the park. It's crazy how good they made it. I can't wait to play this.
It’s the Naughty Dog scheme of gameplay. Nothing new or innovative.
@@Comuzzy why should they feel the need to change it?, I dont get this argument.
@@Comuzzy ???
@@Comuzzy anybody can make anything sound uninteresting. Congratulations, you just contributed nothing to the conversation and missed the whole point
No one said it’s new and innovative, but they did change up their OWN formula with GOW ‘18. BotW and GoW were incredibly successful departures ❤️
2018 game was my favorite game ever. I’m 11 hours into ragnorok, and its giving me the same feeling. That feeling where you can’t wait to play the game again after you turn the system off.
Really loved the 2018 game. The motion capture and the the acting performances are better than some films. I look forward to continuing the adventure in this one and seeing the character development of kratos. Also Jake thank you always for quality content!
My boy Eric Jacobus. First youtube video I ever uploaded was from his film Contour. Deleted scenes.
@@nicholasnajibi3082 I believe the reason for most of the excitement is it’s one of the few IP’s left that gamers feel the developers actually care for. I know a lot of indie games have a lot of care. But let’s be honest. You don’t get a lot of triple A games nowadays that aren’t rinse and repeat or just want to present something great for gamers. It’s just a corporate money grab most of the time. At the end of the day to each there own. But excited to jump back into a world that you can tell developers cared about and care about the people that play their games.
@@elijahminnick2333 or released half assed or micro transaction. GoW The other one was perfect and this one just is a continuation of that

Your energy, passion and love you have for gaming and your no bullshit approach is why I keep coming back. Keep up the great work.
We def have very similar tastes and this video just put my excitement through the roof. So pumped. Btw the “fun factor” has always been my biggest thing and I remember those little faces for each rating lol. Classic stuff.
Pp0p
No spoilers, I really like that it feels like the few things people didn't like (at least the few I didn't) got switched up and the combat felt really nostalgic but really fresh. My partner got a review copy and we fought over getting to play it, we couldn't put it down. 😆
Your partner? Is your partner a game journalist lol

My wife (who I finally got into gaming this past year after years of trying) is playing thru 2018 now. She loves a good story, we just finished both Plague Tales back to back before she started 2018 GOW.
it’s been incredible to watch her both fall in love with GOW as a game and as a story, really getting to know the characters and enjoying that. Seeing that happen has been pure joy for me too. Games can be so much more than just games.
If you ever feel burnt out on gaming try getting someone u care about to play one of your favorites and watch as they discover what u already know to be great. You’ll love gaming again!
Oh and really good content on this channel too Jake!
god of war 2018 was the only game i beat during lock down because of depression and man i cant wait for this to come out!!
Depression is great for beating video games lol
@@ModestPavement well it started with me buying a game playing for 2 days then moving onto another one lol but yes i eventually found the one!
Sucks you were locked down. Some places were plain idiots in how they handled COVID. It was never that serious. Everything was business as usual where I live. Only a handful of people even wore masks
@@jimmycarpenter6612 controversial opinion you have but I totally agree. It traumatized everyone and we will be feeling those effects of shut downs in this country for the rest of time. Anyways back to games...haha
@@ModestPavement oh I agree it did, but it shouldn't have was my point. Many parts of the country just kept going like normal and other than a few people with the sniffles didn't suffer because of it. It was the panic and fear people spread that did so much damage unfortunately. But on a positive note I've already pre ordered Ragnarok lol
Im excited to jump back into more dadventures
2018 was a revelation for GOW. Currently playing Ragnarok only 10 hours in. Im going to slowly digest this game. Been playing since GOW 2 back on PS2.
Honestly I come to Jake easily the most out of any content creator on UA-cam, regarding videogames, for when I’m curious to see whether I should a game or not
He’s one of the most genuine and sincere dudes out here on this platform and sees everything from the player’s perspective and nobody else’s
Everyone else is so stuck up and executive and corporate these days with gaming it just rips all that classic soul and fun of what videogames used to be
Thank you for being our voice, man
Out of all the things this game does great….the writing and script surpasses all. The story that is told is why I play games. This is art in the highest form. Kudos to the writers who crafted a heartfelt story and left all of the activism and bs out of it.
Literally took some vacation days to dive into this game! I'm ready for it!
Out of every single review I've watched today not even one seems to mention the fact that a ton of this game was made during covid. That in itself is amazing.. 👏 Just subscribed btw, idk how I've never seen your channel before.
woah thanks! glad you found me
@@SourceHades Have you just surfaced from a bunker or something? Pretty much every single AAA release was delayed out of this year because of covid related challenges. And the few that didnt get delayed were buggy and flawed video games. Santa Monica said during an interview that not one thing was compromised due to covid and the new work-flows or working around the fact that the actor who played Atreus's voice and height changed drastically during production. It's a shame that we praise video games that ship without bugs, but I'm always appreciative of an insanely polished video game.
@@mvhess that's the fault of the individual studios though. COVID is and never was an issue. People working from home and business shutting down was completely idiotic and they can only blame themselves for any losses or hard times. Not just video game developers but any business. Most places where I live never changed a thing and ran like normal. Walmart is the only place I can think of that changed hours but closing overnight didn't hurt them. Everyone else was business as usual. Didn't care what mistakes other states were making lol
@@jimmycarpenter6612 Mistakes? I'm guessing you don't live in a city. Finding an open daycare became impossible so for a lot of people, working from home became a necessity.
@@mvhess which was a mistake on the daycares part. Or your city for forcing them to close. So yes still a mistake. Practically nothing shut down in my area minus a few bigger businesses that altered their hours and limited customer access. But that was like Walmart sized places who could afford it. The smaller businesses stayed normal because they were smart. It sucks that so many towns and cities unconstitutionally shut down businesses. So many couldn't afford to open up again. It was just a power grab nothing more. Less competition for the bigger companies that were allowed to stay open.
Found you because of the Friends Per Second pod cast - tell Ralph it’s working
Oh God.... I feel like this and Plague Tale Requiem will be my contenders for game of the year 😭
It’s always a good day when you drop a new video! Love your take and insights on the sequel
"we're through the stave, we made it" i think we all know why the most replayed part of this is the most replayed
I never finished GOW 2018, became too much of a chore for me. At the moment, I'm playing it again, but on easy, and pretty much just follow the main story and a few favours that are on the way anyways, and man, it's so much fun. So much better on easy, the fights are cinematic, but the main fun of the game are the environmental puzzles and listening to the interactions between all the characters. I had forgotten how damn good the writing was in that game.
Really really looking forward to playing Ragnarok once I'm done with GOW.
Pizza’s on me, that’s a top quotable line right there
Totally agree on the Faye point Jake, couldn’t tell what it was but you hit it right on the nose. For example I loved when you walk past the light of Alfheim again, and Kratos can’t help but want to be with Faye again. But then seeing them actually together (even in a dream sequence) took some of the emotion out of it
I just want the story cutscenes to be up on UA-cam already lol. I’ll still pick it up later down the line, like how I did with god of war 2018. It’s just that good
How could anyone be mad at you jake, keep carrying that tourch for amazing content. Boyyyyyyyyyy
you know jake love's this game when he saids "DUDE" more then 5 times 🤣🤣🤣
God of War 2018 was cool, enjoyed it for what it was. Got to say though that the Leviathan Axe is cool and all, but I'll take the Blades of Chaos any day. Curious what the difficulty will be like this time around. If they'll repeat a boss like Sigrun or try to one up her.
Major fan of urs since the Arkham Knight vid hahaha, my pre order is on the way its the 1 game ive been waiting for for a very long time and ur spoiler free reviews on it proved i made the right choice, thanks Jake
hahaha is that an app? I may not have it in my country will check shortly
I do wish in future games from now, that they combine the traversal with the combat bosses, like in the old games, I like using the blades to traverse cliffs and zipping points
10/10 cool cape physics
watching this in 2024 for the PC launch next week!
Jake - thanks again for such a solid review.
These days Gameranx before you buy is the only video I’ll check out before a game releases - followed by this channel if there’s a video. Never a spoiler, always an honest review and always reviewed by someone who actually has a deep understanding of the games prior / has a passion for gaming. In the past I read so many reviews and the reviewer has no prior knowledge or appreciation for the title they’re reviewing.
Keep smashing it and can’t wait to get my hands on this one on the 9th.
I really hope there's valkyries again, I know they're in the story but I want those crazy side bosses again, the final valkyrie took me for ever to beat and it was so fun
Idk if you’re gonna see this but the algorithm has brought me back to you because I remember you on PrettyMuchIt😭😭 this is wild as hell to me actually😂
Watching these reviews videos for this is both exciting and tormenting me, I can't friggin wait till next Wednesday!!
The tv I bought are for games like this!!! I am looking forward to trying the game in 120 fps and seeing how it looks and plays!!! The settings for this game are nuts with everything you can do and really tailor the game in the stall in which you want to play. How U want to play it and how u want to see it!!!
Jake you got me hyped man! I’m so excited
Thanks for watching, i noticed you're a video game lover, i have a surprise pakage for you 🎁
This is the secomd game I've ever pre-ordered, and I've been gaming since before pre-orders were even a thing. I hope SMS doesn't let me down, but i have a great feeling they won't. This game looks amazing.
Jake my dude, I can listen to you talk video games all day. And I have spent a big chunk of my day doing just that before.
Thanks Jake! I know I'm going to love this game but I still quickly clicked on both of your reviews because a respect your opinion and LOVE your enthusiasm! Keep up the excellent work!
"They make Mimir say 'fuck' a lot." Hell yeah dude.
Man, I am so stoked. The stoketest I've been for a video game in awhile, I've been kinda 'meh' on a lot of recent releases. This bad boy will be a breath of rad air.
Thanks for watching expect more games soon , 🎊🎊🎉❤️..MESSAGE ME NOW FOR YOUR REWARD 🎉❤️🎉❤️..
Cowabunga dood
I think using the word “bait” when talking about side missions was a really great way to put it
It is one of the best stories in gaming
As a casual gamer really loved the pain that valkyries gave to us especially in the give me god of war mode
I love how most games these past couple of years that were either reviewed as a 10, or 9 like RDR2 single player, Elden Ring, GoWR include zero microtransactions. Some companies are still scratching their heads on this fact.
I wanna watch, but im gonna start limiting social media stuff, havent seen spoilers yet, but ik they are bound to happen, think i might stay off til it launches, ive got the week off to sit through it, also really keen for the collectors edition, been a fan since the first game so i had to get it.
I loved the GOW franchise and Ninja Gaiden franchise. I'm 46 now and I'm not much of a gamer anymore but whenever a GOW game or ninja gaiden game comes out....I'm getting them!!! My games only consists of the two Franchises. Other games I just can't get into them.
Dude I love the way you break down the game it's amazing
Man I was really hoping to see a vid about the outlast trials. Can we expect one in the future?
not really the biggest outlast guy tbh but if I get a chance to play it I promise to talk about it
Tie your shoes and go to bed 🤣 Came here from the podcast, great stuff!!
This is getting me going again.
Pre ordered as I was watching, beyond hype to play this 😭😭😭
My only worry / regret is that I am going to play this on PS4 Pro, couldn’t get a PS5 and as a “parent gamer” can’t really afford a 5 😢. Still SUPER pumped to continue this journey and story. GoW18 hit me hard as a father 😭
Thanks for watching, i noticed you're a video game lover, i have a surprise pakage for you 🎁
I only trust Jake's reviews because he never spoils the games I appreciate it my man
thanks Joe!
Absolutely loved this game and agreed with your take on it. I grew up playing this series and was the first game to ever get me in trouble from the nudity lol. Got the pleasure to beat it 100% this morning while dealing with impaired vision from two ulcers in my eyes. If I do end up losing my sight, I'm extremely happy this was the last game i get to beat.
This will be my first GOW. Been brushing up on the story and already downloaded it. Just got a ps5 a week ago and wow what a difference from xbox one x
I have exams at the end of the month and I was kinda low key hoping the game would get enough mixed reviews so I could justify holding off on getting to day one. At this point, I’m just praying the tests are on Norse mythology.
Dam got the collector edition coming wanted the jotnar one but yeah stoked for sure
All I want to know before I play it is if there is more boss fights then the first
I miss my Game Pro magazines. I still have a box of them that I saved!
Great content, Jake! Love your takes and genuine, thoughtful input you have about games. Keep it up, bro!
thanks Ryan!!
Wonderful video, your commentary is right up there with dunky and skill up for me. I especially love all your references to old gow and ps2/3 era stuff, that was my favorite!
I just came back to this video after platting GoWR and I have to say this video is super spoiler-y. I don't think it's possible to even have a commentary on a game like this without spoilers. Obviously you are not giving away anything specific but thats more than enough for someone who wants to be completely spoiler-free. I purposely did not watch ANY GoWR content for this reason, even trailers. Sorry I don't want to be super harsh but for anyone trying to come into the game 100% cold, watch this video after you play most of the story. For others who are not so fanatical, dive right in, this video rocks!
“Death can have me when it earns me” bruh
As someone who didn’t love the 2018 God of War, Ragnarok is more what I wanted its predecessor to be. I still think the game could have been more violent like the originals but the combat feels more fun for sure. So far, I’m really enjoying the game!
God of War Ragnarok is going to be great, can't wait to play it (also Bayonetta 3 was phenomenal, just finished and i'm so glad to say that PLATINUM IS BACK BABY!)
Been watching Gameranx since 2016 and man I love ur channel even more Jake
GOW 2018 had a lot of those “fuck that’s just a good line” moments to I’m hyped
Let’s get Jake to 300k subs!!!
Jake love ya dude so glad I found your channel and of course love your work over at Gameranx as well keep it up!!
One of the few games I felt very comfortable preordering
My body is ready💯
I didn't like fighting games when I was little so I shied away from the God of War series I didn't play a God of War until the 2018 one but it's easily top five because of the story because of the characters I'm so excited for Ragnarok
I preordered the moment I saw the Before You Buy.
haven’t played it yet but hearing you talk about how it made you FEEL something and had plenty to take away from it has me excited! reminds me of how TLOU part 2 felt

Ah can't wait to enjoy this game the way it was meant to be experienced...by watching TheRadBrad do a full playthrough of the game on one of the 500 Ps5 ever made while i wait 5 years so i can play it on my 3090 once its out for pc (〒﹏〒)...lets go
4:28 NOOOOO not those birds again
Man every review says spoiler free then I watch it and they show Odin or Thor in a cutscene and I instantly rage.
Loved the video. Can’t wait to play it! 🎉❤
I've watched every review out so far and I was holding out for yours the most. Straight talking and honest but I do think you should give it a score of some kind. There's plenty of 10/10 reviews but they arent always trustworthy. I've partly ruined it by watching all the leaked videos on UA-cam but to be honest I doubt it'll make a difference. Once I get that controller in my hand it'll be a new experience.
thanks! I've wanted to make a video on this topic - I dislike review scores for the most part. The 'at a glance' is useful, but I feel the conversation gets bogged down by "omg they gave it a 7.5 instead of an 8" and just meaningless numbers more often
@@JakeBaldino Thanks for the reply! You make a fair point and I appreciate how a review score can oversimplify the analysis, I guess that's why Digital Foundry don't give scores too. But for those of us that trust your reviews a 10 from you would be very different from a 10 from IGN. But I take your point.
Congrats on 300k Jake
thanks!
Just hope the game isn’t so confusing navigating the game world, 2018 my buggest complaint was that and made doing side quests frustrating
I felt the same way. I never even knew I'd I did any of the side quests because they weren't clear. But I also have the directional capacity of a watermelon in real life lol 😅
Was boring

Oh, I noticed right off the bat. That font kinda reminds me of The Lost Boys cover. So sick. And same to you Jake! 🎃
@@JakeBaldino do you think I should pick this over Tlou2?
I'm stock in that loop Tlou2 or gow Ragnarok by the way I'm on a ps4
Ooo Fun Factor. I like that. I think Maneater had a high Fun Factor, while not being super innovative and kind of repetitive (the snarky narration, easter eggs, and just generally always being overpowered made it fun).
Listen I was already excited but the music comparisons to ESB and then knowing it's bigger but keeps it intimate, is it wednesday yetttttttttt, thanks for staying completely spoiler free!
Hey Jake is this a game that you think is going to be a game that you can turn on from time to time and just travel to areas and fight enemies and not always dive into story content? I’ve seen somewhere someone said enemies respawn in areas you’ve travelled to unlike the previous release. I know most don’t care but I find myself wanting to go back to 2018 god of war just for some good ol combat but after the story there isn’t many options besides new game plus and I’m not always wanting to replay the story. I mainly ask since the areas look much larger
This game is so great. More high quality story games are the best 👌
I'll be interested to see the side quests, I've heard both they're less compelling and felt more fetchy, I've also heard this, that they're more compelling and nuanced
That Tony hawk's underground poster though

299K Subs? - C'mon guys lets get Jake over the 300K sub count! Great video btw!

I did not like the first one. The originals, I liked most of all from the brutal gameplay and the ease when which you found loot boxes. That was huge to me. The emotional story is great. Is it closer to the original games in like the brutal intense. And the diversity of enemies?! Not enough in gow 2018
