Something that occurs to me is her association with the donkeys. Donkeys are "beasts of burden". They not only serve in the imagery as her burdens to address, but also dance *with* her and show a sense of camaraderie in the movie. To say simply, they understand her, and also symbolize how Luisa is being used by her family like a beast of burden and allowed no rest.
Notice when she's in the clouds fantasizing about having some time and space for herself, the donkeys have unicorn horns -- as in mythical creatures. That tells me she sees getting a break as completely unrealistic. It's heartbreaking really.
i knew she had pressure from being over worked and over burdened but WOW i never made that connection, thats beautiful, thank you for showing me something more to appreciate about this movie
I knew coming in that LMM did the music here. But even if I hadn’t known, every time Dolores sings it would’ve given it away. Her bars are probably the most Hamilton sounding thing I’ve ever heard outside of Hamilton
"Give it to your sister and never wonder, if the same pressure would have pulled you under." I feel like that line is the one line everybody overlooks. It's just such a tone change after her sister starts to see her struggle, she changes the song to reassure her. The beginning she's strong, as the song goes she starts to give way and as she sees the worry and fear in her sister's eyes, she starts flipping the house and dancing. She puts her strong facade back on, so that her sister won't worry and then drops the aforementioned line. By far my favorite part of the whole movie was this scene with Luisa. Definitely my favorite character and the lyrics are so relatable you can't help but feel for her.
It's 7:10 that gets to me. She wants to relax, to take a break, to do something else. But all she knows is Pressure that's "Growing. And keeps Going. Cause 'ALL' we 'KNOW' is-" And then it switches to her holding the weight of everything, looking so defeated and sad "-Pressure that will Drip, Drip, Drip That'll 'NEVER STOP'." She can't relax. Never. Cause the Pressure will never go away. She is stuck in the cycle forever. Everything will always be on her shoulders. At least that is how she feels. And that's so emotionally depressing, and relatable.
That's what I've been saying! That line is so gut-wrenching especially because she's put on such a happy face at this point in the song, she's literally saying "Everyone expects me to handle pressure that would have crushed them, and nobody thinks twice about it", it's so telling and such a subtle cry for help, but because the visuals during this part are a bit more goofy people just skip over the line.
@@deannaalbert672 I don't know if it's sarcastic per se, but I do think it's a case of saying the opposite of what is meant, similar to her saying "it doesn't hurt" while being visibly in pain
As the oldest of six, this song hit hard. My sister called me after seeing this movie and said she saw how much pressure was put on me growing up. I know you will enjoy the movie with all the family dynamics in it.
I'm the oldest of 3. I totally feel you. This song messes me up every time. Brings back all the parentification, being the therapist to both my parents so they could individually complain about each other, knowing the family financial problems, expectations of perfection..... ughhhhh
I'm the oldest of six as well. I definitely connected with this song very strongly when I first heard it and I still do now. Overall, I loved the movie and I'm still watching it over and over again hahaha 🤣. Much love to all of the older sisters out there crushing it! ☺️❤️
"I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service", "Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger See if she can hang on a little longer Who am I if I can't carry it all?", "Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt And see if she can handle every family burden Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks", "Give it to your sister and never wonder If the same pressure would've pulled you under" these lines really hit your heart even knowing i'm a only child it still hearts knowing this dose happen to those with brothers/sisters where they think they need to take on a lot
I love the fact that Disney was so sure that every little girl would want the Isabella character and over ordered her doll, while the animators had to fight to make Luisa this muscled and she became- statistically- the favorite of every little girl over night. And I have to say Luisa is my fave as well and I love how everything about her laughs in the face of society and Disney and is just wrapped up in an amazing package
Notice how she's so strong and rough with all the objects and elements, but when she interacts with Mirabel, she's very gentle (like when she puts her glasses on her)
Everyone is raving about "We Dont talk About Bruno", but THIS is my favorite song from the movie. Best Disney song in a long time imo. Also, am I the only one who thinks Luisa is FINE? And she can dance!
same for me. and going thru all these reactions i love that so far practically every one of them was like "last time we checked out 'we don't talk about bruno' now we are doing another song from encanto". seems kind of symbolic that this song about the sister hiding her feelings to be strong for everyone else is permanently stuck in the number 2 spot.
I am 36 years old, I've been married for 11 years, I work 60 or more hours per week while in school, and have a wife who is just coming out of depression and severe anxiety. When I heard this song I almost had to leave the room because it hit more than any song ever has.
I get it. I'm a single mum myself, but we both carry immense pressure in our daily lives while trying to act like we're okay on the outside. Anxiety and depression are difficult to live with but crying through a Disney movie if you need to cry can help🩷
I love watching the realization finally hit for him, that the song is about being under a crazy ton of pressure, and that she's worried she won't be able to carry it all. His face goes from "happy" to "oh shit" in half a second
Bro, the fact you're able to vibe to the beat AND get the message is a big A+! So many reactors I've seen simply vibe, and don't listen to the deeper meaning in the lyrics. You earned a sub!
The comment that broke me was 'I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service'. I didn't realize before that line how much of my self worth is tied up in doing as much as I can for everyone else. I'm currently on hiatus from work to deal with my health and I keep having bad anxiety attacks where I can't breath because I haven't done enough today, and I'm trying to find my identity outside of serving others
I know I'm replying to an old comment, hope you don't mind. The thing that really helped me in finding a better others/self balance was understanding that I was one of those people who I needed to take care of. Doubly so since I'm the one I'm in charge of, I can't keep pawning that responsibility off onto other people then wondering why I'm not being taken care of.
“We don’t talk about Bruno” is great, but it’s exposition. That one sets the scene. Surface pressure has much more depth because they aren’t telling you what the setting is, they’re exploring this character’s mental state. I think that’s a lot of what makes it better. Also the transitions were simply amazing.
This is the best song on the soundtrack. It's about Luisa's role in her family as the workhorse. She feels insurmountable pressure to get everything done as a duty to her family, but her family never takes her feelings into consideration. Luisa has never been able to relax or do anything for herself that brings her happiness since she received her gift. Here are the lyrics. I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous I'm as tough as the crust of the earth is I move mountains, I move churches And I glow 'cause I know what my worth is I don't ask how hard the work is Got a rough indestructible surface Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanding But Under the surface I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus Under the surface Was Hercules ever like "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"? Line up the dominoes A light wind blows You try to stop it tumbling But on and on it goes But wait If I could shake the crushing weight of expectations Would that free some room up for joy Or relaxation, or simple pleasure? Instead we measure this growing pressure Keeps growing, keep going 'Cause all we know is Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt And see if she can handle every family burden Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks No mistakes just Pressure like a grip, grip, grip and it won't let go, whoa Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa Give it to your sister and never wonder If the same pressure would've pulled you under Who am I if I don't have what it takes? No cracks, no breaks No mistakes, no pressure

(6:30) "I'm your big sister, I'm suppose to protect you" actually, if you notice, the name on the ship is Madrigal (the name of the family). While she does sing this to the little sister, she feels she has to protect and carry the FAMILY.
If you want family background then listen to The Family Madrigal. You get a full rundown without the spoilers. Surface pressure hits hard as a big sister/cousin/mother. Fabulous movie (ive seen it over 6 times now thanks to my 3 and 1 year olds)
My 2 year old currently has this movie on repeat on the TV and his tablet. I am absolutely in LOVE with the song!!! I'm the oldest of 4 girls...and I identify with Luisa and Mirabel both quite a bit. I can see my sisters in each of the characters too. This movie is amazing because everyone can either relate to one of these characters, or has a family member who is one of these....love this movie!!
Every time she says " preserve this" while holding her sisters face I tear up. How many times do people stand like that looking into the eyes of their child or sibling or anyone we want to protect thinking I will do anything to protect this.
"I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of surface" had me in instant tears. I've never had a song hit me so hard. Lin Manuel Miranda can do no wrong.
It slaps because it was written by Lin Manual Miranda, who is actually using a lot of clever background writing and music techniques with rhyme, beat and lyrics.
The families are color coordinated. Mirabel and her family are dressed in blue and white. Her cousins and aunt and uncle are in yellow and red. It makes it easier to understand who everyone is as you watch the movie.
I think this song speaks to so many people because it is so true. How many of us are under extreme stress and feel at the breaking point!? And then it is so catchy - it gets stuck in my head. I sing it all day long. Clever lyrics. The best beats. And sung so well by Jessica Darrow. Amazing
I watched like 3 other breakdowns before I got to yours and I gotta tell you I thoroughly enjoyed your take on this. You are incredibly entertaining and Thank you for your video. Nice work!
So this song and We Don't Talk About Bruno are amazing. Disney really outdid themselves with this movie and the songs. Probably the best Disney movie out there right now.
I can't even relate to this song, but I can empathize and it keeps bringing me tears.. as the youngest of 2 boys, I definitely didnt have to deal with this in my life, but I feel sad for anyone that does. Also this song makes me just want to make Luisa sit down and just relax. Have a drink, take a load off.
As the oldest of four who basically was mom 2.0 for them...and so much more...this song hit very different for me. It hurt but felt validating as well.
My oldest of four has also told me this. I know I asked her to do more as she got older & the younger ones just needed supervising (and each one had their turn babysitting for the ones below them) but I hope I didn’t put too much on her. She still has no problem telling them what to do.
This is my favorite song from the movie, though The Family Madrigal pops into my head more frequently. I watch so many reactions to it. Yours was the first to note the choreography!! Thank you! I am constantly telling people, "Luisa got moves!" Jessica Darrow is the actress and singer. This is the best character by far!
I loved seeing you notice the beat and music first and then as you realized the words. You can tell as you started to understand what it was talking about and I loved it!
I love how my usual reactors ate reacting to these songs !! When I first heard the song my initial thought was who wrote this song because it has bars and so much more !!
The funny thing is that her sister was supposed to be the star of the movie, and all Disney merchandise was made with that in mind. But guess who all the girls who watched it want to be like!!! Caught Disney by complete surprise and sold out of Luisa merchandise.
Loved both your reactions! They are genuine and you seem very receptive to the themes (this character, Luisa, is indeed going through a lot under the surface and that's so relatable). I'd love to watch you reaction to the full thing, I guarantee there's plenty more bars and feels. In terms of songs I suggest family madrigal to have an idea of the story. Possibly you could check out waiting on a miracle after that, but the others I think are better appreciated in context. Plenty of reactors are getting away with posting reaction highlights, or you could also edit out the song parts and put those in other videos. Whatever you decide to do I hope you'll enjoy the movie, it's really special to me and many other people
I feel like you were listening to the music and not the words, because when you were smiling and dancing this song always tears me up. It's a cry for help.
Ame tu reaccion, al principio fue un "wow, que buen ritmo" y a medida que escuchabas y entendías la letra tu cara fue cambiando. Es una canción que como dice la letra, es profunda 💜💜💜💜
What I find most interesting is how at the beginning sh say she is not nervous not because it's embarassing for her or anything like that, is because admiting being nervous or anxious would make her sister worried and she has to keep being that safe haven for her younger sister.
My 10 & 3 yr old daughters’ favourite song, such a great dance at the end of each day - the words speak to mum and dad too! Favourite movie 🍿 awesome!!
The way your eyebrows went up 😂 people don’t talk about this enough but she’s attractive and packin. Not to mention she’s a huge softy who deserves all the love. But ya I was like “DAMN SIS!”
Another one to watch that won't really spoil anything that the description of the movie doesn't tell you is family madrigal. I would love to see a movie reaction from ya though! It would be awesome!
Yeah... this movie... I think everyone relates to one of the family members more than any others - kids like it, but it definitely has an message for adults..
You gotta love Luisa! Notice her face after she's flying through the sky, then gets more boulders on her -- the look she gives to her little sis Mirabel. Kinda scared, maybe? Scared she might fail the family, who are relying on her to be the strong one, because that's what she's been led to believe gives her worth. She'll keep on taking everything coming her way until it does crush her -- with no complaints.
Mirabel, the girl in glasses, is 15; Luisa is about 18; while Isabela, who has flowers bursting into bloom in her wake, is 21. Luisa, who is Gifted with amazing strength and stamina, is the self-appointed protector and problem solver. As you can see, this puts unbelievable stress on her, as she takes on more and more. If you want to hear someone taking on some "bars", catch Mirabel in "The Family Madrigal". Near the end she's spitting out words like a machine gun.
The Family Madrigal is a perfect song to help you understand what's going on without any spoilers because it's the entry song to the movie and I think you would love it. the music is all amazing in this movie
I'm an older sis and enjoy bars and man this movie is everything. AWESOME. Everyone (doesn't) talk about Bruno but Jeez this song is so dang good. I'm a 31 grown woman and haven't heard something like this since Moana.
Surface pressure is my favorite songs from Encanto but I love it so much I haven’t watched the movie but I like all the songs from I like we don’t talk about Bruno answer for pressure
Magic realism inspired!! Colombia is the country of that type of literature. (Gabriel Garcías Márquez). And the nature is just the same with architecture and all races in one family
I highly recommend watching the movie before listening to all of the songs. The two you have listened to are pretty much the only ones that don’t spoil much of anything. You should do a react to the movie!! That would be great I see reactions everywhere but I have no personal experience with it lol
I took it way lighter as her dancing being surrounded by ass and got a giggle out of it. You're definitely right though lol
I mean, us latinos literally say “trabaja como burro” (works like a donkey) to someone who works extremely hard and doesn't take a rest.
You got a killer observation here.. it totally tracks.
“Why does this have bars?”
It’s Lin Manuel Miranda
“But why does this slap?”
Because Lin Manuel Miranda
“Ok but-“
Don’t ask, it’s Lin Manuel Miranda
English is not my first language, and don't get the meaning of "bars" here... what does it mean in this context, please?
@Paula C oh thank you! That makes more sense now

How many realize she is literally holding the world, the house, and the whole encanto on her back? I love the visual subtleties.
Also "no cracks, no breaks", which isn't just talking about the house, but also how she herself isn't allowed to crack never gets any breaks.
She called a hurricane a light wind, too.
Very few people. They have too much fun, even while listening to the lyrics, and have no understanding of how depressing and sad the song actually is
Yes! The whole house fell on her, the later the whole village falls on her and even the sun in the sky.

Was Hercules ever like "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"?
Under the surface
I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service
A flaw or a crack
The straw in the stack

What breaks the camel's back it's
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'till you just go pop, whoa

See if she can hang on a little longer
Who am I if I can't carry it all?
If I falter
Under the surface
I hide my nerves, and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us
Under the surface
The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is
Under the surface
I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?
Line up the dominoes
A light wind blows
You try to stop it tumbling
But on and on it goes
But wait
If I could shake the crushing weight of expectations
Would that free some room up for joy
Or relaxation, or simple pleasure?
Instead we measure this growing pressure
Keeps growing, keep going
'Cause all we know is
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt
And see if she can handle every family burden
Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks
No mistakes just
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip and it won't let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa

The voice actor is also the singer. Jessica Darrow. She's acting and singing for Luisa Madrigal.
It slaps because it was written by Lin Manual Miranda, who is actually using a lot of clever background writing and music techniques with rhyme, beat and lyrics.
He’s the new Alan Menken for Disney. Has he written any broadway stuff? If the analogue holds then it should be hilarious.
@@SorenPenrosehe’s the one behind Hamilton and In The Heights, both big shows on Broadway. He’s incredible
@@PolyBiBadger awesome! I’ll check them out
I LOVE watching reactions to this song for THIS reason. This guy picked out EVERYTHING I love about the song and it's just Awesome!
The families are color coordinated. Mirabel and her family are dressed in blue and white. Her cousins and aunt and uncle are in yellow and red. It makes it easier to understand who everyone is as you watch the movie.
And then Bruno is green
I never paid attention to that before.
And then there's Isabela in pink lol
@@kcabra95 Isabella initially is pink to match Abuela (as her favorite), but later her dress incorporates the blue of Julieta's side of the family
@@weirdbunmi yep I noticed that, it's an amazing detail! :)
This song always makes me wanna cry. I am the eldest sister and cousin in the family. It's very relatable.
Jessica does a version with just a bass accompaniment. I think you would appreciate it.
Ooh, I need to take a look at this! 👀

As a mother and care taker of many, this song hits hard ❣️
I'm so glad you did this one. It's the one that resonates the most with me - who am I if I'm not of service?
You definitely need to watch. It's on D+
Your wish has been granted
As the oldest of four who basically was mom 2.0 for them...and so much more...this song hit very different for me. It hurt but felt validating as well.
My oldest of four has also told me this. I know I asked her to do more as she got older & the younger ones just needed supervising (and each one had their turn babysitting for the ones below them) but I hope I didn’t put too much on her. She still has no problem telling them what to do.
5:38 it's "give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder"
All of these songs SLAP SO HARD because they were all written by Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton Moana and In The Heights legend.
Love the reaction of people who are new to Lin Manuel Miranda’s music and are surprised by the sick bars.
I feel like all the actors did their own singing.
I think they all did but I’m not completely sure
I loved seeing you notice the beat and music first and then as you realized the words. You can tell as you started to understand what it was talking about and I loved it!
I love how my usual reactors ate reacting to these songs !! When I first heard the song my initial thought was who wrote this song because it has bars and so much more !!
It was Bruno that hooked me in, but surface pressure is kinda growing on me! Love from India ❤️
Obsessed with Encanto. This song is my second favorite.
You got the message spot on dude, spot on. Well done 👍🏼
I also love how it relates to everyone being under pressure at some point in their life
I've never related so hard with a movie like Encanto. I honestly am addicted and have to play it at least once a day.
My first video of yours, and tbh I think I’m in love my dude. Love your energy!
Louisa is a fantastic character. She is impossibly strong and tough yet still beautiful and feminine. The whole film is great.
The funny thing is that her sister was supposed to be the star of the movie, and all Disney merchandise was made with that in mind. But guess who all the girls who watched it want to be like!!! Caught Disney by complete surprise and sold out of Luisa merchandise.
I’m a grown ass man and I love this movie watched it with my daughter and now I listen to the songs. Best modern Disney movie IMO.
Haaahahahahaha I love how you reacted 🤗👌🏻 exactly how I did! ❤️
It's a cry for help.
it all makes sense when you know the full context of the movie lol
I enjoyed this!🌟I’m going to have to watch Encanto!✨😊🌸
Bars? Yep.
That’s Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Happy face then... 5:57 the face you make when you realize that the lyrics are as heavy as the rytnm. 👍
that moment when that fun disney song gets real and you figure the message out
This is so wholesome and fun lol great reaction!! Can relate 100%
Man, I love how positive you are. You got my likes and I might even subscribe.
Ame tu reaccion, al principio fue un "wow, que buen ritmo" y a medida que escuchabas y entendías la letra tu cara fue cambiando. Es una canción que como dice la letra, es profunda 💜💜💜💜
You want to talk about insane pressure and dedication? The singer _PREGNANT AND IN ACTIVE LABOR_ when she sang this.
Doubtful
I think you mean the singer for Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) was the one with that fact
I would love to see a movie reaction! The movie is so amazing!
Gotta complete the Encanto trifecta with The Family Madrigal.
A light wind blows. Wow. Girl that's a tornado!!
Love this song and film
The lyrics are written by Lin manual Miranda!!! He wrote Hamilton and several other musicals
I love watching ppl Bop to this song and thennnnnn the words click lol
You’re correct it does have bars and you can hear it big time!
I love watching people listen to this song, some of us get so emotional to it though, it's a song I go to so I can simply cry it out-😅
The song is inspired in the 90's colombian rock movement. That's what Lin-Miranda said
Loved the vid! (And just discovered the Thanks button 😄) Hi from Berlin
I watched it twice already once with my grandson then by myself
Me gusta mucho la versión en español, pero la original es otro mundo, me encanta!!! Es hermosa, estaría genial que reacciones a la versión español!!!
This is my favorite reaction to this song.
love the reaction on this video ... it is just so good
Encanto has bars
Mirabel, the girl in glasses, is 15; Luisa is about 18; while Isabela, who has flowers bursting into bloom in her wake, is 21. Luisa, who is Gifted with amazing strength and stamina, is the self-appointed protector and problem solver. As you can see, this puts unbelievable stress on her, as she takes on more and more.
If you want to hear someone taking on some "bars", catch Mirabel in "The Family Madrigal". Near the end she's spitting out words like a machine gun.
This was my favorite song from the whole movie!
Yes!! I like this one most!
The donkeys get me every time I watch this 😂😂
The Family Madrigal is a perfect song to help you understand what's going on without any spoilers because it's the entry song to the movie and I think you would love it. the music is all amazing in this movie
First song from Disney to make me cry
Boom one I can watch with the kids, you got me
Enjoyed watching your reaction
I really love the choreography💜
I'm an older sis and enjoy bars and man this movie is everything. AWESOME. Everyone (doesn't) talk about Bruno but Jeez this song is so dang good.
I'm a 31 grown woman and haven't heard something like this since Moana.
Surface pressure is my favorite songs from Encanto but I love it so much I haven’t watched the movie but I like all the songs from I like we don’t talk about Bruno answer for pressure
Looove this song! So much better than We don’t talk about Bruno, imo, such a more meaningful message in the song too
Cant wait for live band covers
Magic realism inspired!! Colombia is the country of that type of literature. (Gabriel Garcías Márquez). And the nature is just the same with architecture and all races in one family
That Beth Phoenix line give me a big laugh and you got a new subscriber because of it
Oh my gosh, please do a movie reaction haha Big thanks to Lin Manuel for the music.
I highly recommend watching the movie before listening to all of the songs. The two you have listened to are pretty much the only ones that don’t spoil much of anything. You should do a react to the movie!! That would be great
I see reactions everywhere but I have no personal experience with it lol
