The Encanto soundtrack has been blowing me away so far! After listening to We Don't Talk About Bruno I just had to dive in deeper and listen to Surface Pressure sung by Jessica Darrow. This is such an impactful song, from the lyrics to the vocal performance it is just amazing!

“Give it to your sister and never wonder if that same pressure would’ve pulled you under” is my absolute favorite line from this movie! So perfect.
“I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service” absolutely wrecked me when I first heard it.
Same I had to watch it a few times to catch that line but it hits so hard
"See if she can handle every family burden" ooff, right in the feels. Seriously though I love every line from this song. Rarely do we get to see the strong ones in the movies be this vulnerable and honest.

The scene where Luisa is holding the rocks while looking at her sister is so powerful. She seems so strong but her face expression is screaming for help, I love it

I practically bawled on that part. It hit home so damn hard. This movie is so great, and this song is perfection.

Her hands slipping, the little grimace on her face, it's so perfect
5:07 Luisa's expression as the weight keeps mounting on her back is the face of someone just screaming out for help. Combined with the soft piano notes that sort of belie her vulnerable interior, while the bass underneath acts like that pressure that just drips and drips and drips, that part of the song never fails to make me feel omg
And notice that Mirabel is extending her hand towards her, like she wants to help, but doesn´t know how (ultimately tough she manages to help the whole family).

The part where the lighting goes red and Luisa is carrying the rocks right after such a happy, weightless scene in the clouds always gets me. She sounds so honest and vulnerable! The lines like 'I think I might be worthless if I can't be of service,' 'Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt her,' and 'Don't wonder if the same pressure would have pulled you under,' are so raw. Wow.

I love that you can almost hear anger behind "Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt, and/See if she can handle every family burden!" Like she's always the rock that the whole family depends on and maybe she's getting tired of it. I can't explain why i love those lines so much but it almost sounds desperate or angry and it's just so good
HOLY SHIII IM AT THAT PART-
When the clip is focused on Mirabel over Luisa's shoulder, just look at Luisa's face. That says just as much as the entire song.
You can also hear in every chorus those whispers saying "pressure". It's subtle, but gives so much emphasis to the essence of the song.
I love how this uses an anti drop. It really shows how even just saying this and admitting how much pressure she’s under just immediately takes a weight off her shoulders. Then the slower build up after (especially before the last chorus) makes you feel how stressful her entire life has been.
The break has a much slower tempo as she describes being finally relieved of the pressure she feels, but as soon as she even mentions that "instead we measure the pressure" the tempo doubles up, the backing reminds her of "pressure - pressure - pressure - pressure" and the climax starts again. Wonderful.
While "We don't talk about Bruno" is without a doubt the catchiest song, Surface Pressure is, in my opinion, the best song.

The song Dos Oroguitas is the one that the producers are choosing for awards. It was nominated for a Golden Globe, and it's expected to be nominated for an Oscar.
I think Surface Pressure should be the nominated one. Dos Oruguitas is sad and soft, is nice, but I think Surface Pressure is more powerfull, no only for the lirycs but for the music too.
Surface Pressure is relatable even without context, while Dos Oruguitas hit more with in the context.
Idk, I belive "Is ok to let out how you feel" is a better massage than "we have to move on", but I guess that's just my opinion.

@@sofialu226 As someone who absolutely adores Surface Pressure, I have to disagree with you on your take of Dos Oruguitas. It is about moving on, but it's about much more than that. It's about finding your way in an ever changing world, not holding onto the past, and about not hiding and getting stuck in your chrysalis/cocoon because of traumatic life experiences, but instead realizing that any caterpillar has to first dissolve into a gooey mass to eventually become the butterfly its meant to be. To fully spread our wings, we have to go through hardships, and sometimes we have to let go of people or things we love, but also grief that keeps us trapped in the past. Sometimes we have to go our own way first before we can find our way back together. Hardships are a part of life, and Dos Oruguitas is a beautifully nuanced exploration of grief, acceptance and healing. It definitely deserves the nomination.
@@magiv4205 I know that, but for me is still basically moving on. To Move on, you have to go through all of that anyways by default. In different levels, yes, sometimes is harder, others essier, but still have to go through stuff to being able to move on.
But That's a more common spoken topic than the pressure of expectation from others and from ourselves (at least in my surroundings).
But well, that's just how I see it. Both are great though. I wasn't saying Dos Oruguitas was bad, far from it. I just felt that Surface Pressuere would work better.
@@sofialu226 That's a fair point. I don't necessarily fully agree, but that's fine, we both have our experiences and we're both allowed to have our opinions. And we can at least agree that both songs are absolutely incredible.
I love how the way the song is built is like she's getting really nervous and then the song goes back to being soft like she's trying to calm down
I loved how Luisa always took care of Mirabel in that song. She always catches her and even when she sends Mira in air, she's super gentle and delicate. It really matches to the singing.
More than just a ‘modern’ feel, Encanto has songs based upon the numerous genres popular and present in Colombia, ‘Surface Pressure’ come from Reggaeton/Trap, ‘We don’t Talk about Bruno’ is a form of cha cha cha, ‘Waiting on a Miracle’ is a waltz (you’ll rarely see a Disney song, much less an ‘I want song’, in 3/4 time) and ‘What else can I do?’ is reminiscent of latin rock in Spanish.
Colombia’s music is so diverse that Lin Manuel Miranda managed to create a full soundtrack where each song has a different genre and different influence in mind.
That comment about 3/4 time made me think...I came up with three Disney waltzes off the top of my head but only one of them (Ma Belle Evangeline from Princess and the Frog) had words. (The other two are both "princess dancing with prince" scenes, one from Frozen and the other also from Princess And the Frog). There's also Once Upon a Dream from Sleeping Beauty but that tune came from an existing classical piece so it doesn't really count. And all of those are "romantic dance" songs, not character solos.
@@dbseamz yeah, usually musicals use waltzes as romantic pieces, however Lin uses the 3/4 time of the waltz to mark a character feeling out of place, he did the same with Nina’s song ‘Breathe’ for In The Heights.

Lin Manuel Miranda is such an amazing composer. Of course, everyone knows his biggest hit of all time right now is Hamilton, as well as In the Heights, and Moana. I cant wait to hear what LMM comes up with next for us all.

He is also working on Little Mermaid live action. No high expectations though as their live actions are... Well.

I legitimately cried in the theatres during this song god i didn’t go into that movie expecting to feel that raw feeling as the older sibling that took on a lot of the family drama and making everything ok for my younger siblings. God it hit hard

Actually, Luisa is the middle child while Isabella’s the oldest. But even Isabella’s struggling because she never wanted to be perfect, she wants to be who she truly is.

I have two older half sisters and my oldest half sister just is always in her own thing and to be quite Frank she's not a very good person and she's an even worse sibling. It's my second oldest half-sister that takes only role of the older sister making sure that me and our younger brother are protected and taking care of and she always has been that mother role. Hearing this song just absolutely made me cry thinking of my older sister that was the protector and still is.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is pure genius. Every song in *Encanto* is phenomenal. I love that every time she says *"Under the Surface"* they triple up the vocal layers. It helps you FEEL it even more. This whole song is telling my internal life story.
LMM said somewhere that he wrote this song as a tribute/sorta-apology to his own older sister, who he knows had a lot more family responsibility growing up than he did.
This is, for me, the most relatable song in the movie. The way she sang, "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service" always hits home. And yes, her voice! Loved it. ❤️
These lyrics are incredible, as is the composition of the song. However, this is what happens when Lin Manuel Miranda gets involved. Credit definitely goes to him rather than Disney. He is a genius.
The part no one talks about that breaks me every time is at 5:28. Mirabell Jumps up to try to help but she knows she can't which just makes her more afraid and feeling helpless as she watches her sister suffer and i just. AH
Even tho "We don't talk about Bruno" and "Surface Pressure" are both really awesome songs and I absolutely love them I gotta say my favorite song from the movie is not either of them. My favorite song is called "Dos Oruguitas". It's very different compared to these two, very beautiful and emotional song that I think is getting a little underrated from these songs in the movie. I mean it doesn't have that "beat" or "pop" that these two songs have and which is why it's easy to like them but still "Dos Oruguitas" is my favorite¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Melody is catchy, her voice is beautiful but the message is painful🤧(it's a good thing though)

I really enjoyed how the lyrics switch to that informal slang "yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus" in the middle.
For the song to build up and then wait and start going softer again makes me think of everytime someone's pressure keeps building they have to bring themselves back before they break. So it's non stop tension that will never be able to resolve itself. I honestly really loved this song so relatable and they do it so well and so many meanings to this song like you can find meaning in every aspect of this song.

As someone who has a sister who’s 8 years older than me, I can really relate to this. She just shoulder everything when our parents aren’t around when we’re young. So glad to see that she’s more relaxed now I’m graduating and older. Surface Pressure is my favorite. I cry every time. The song just gets me, and they way the vocalist captures the tough, stalwart exterior with the undertones of fear and lack of confidence, combine with the subtle expressions on the animated character. I've heard it 5 or 6 times since watching the film and it still gets me. Can't get through this one without tissues.

It's been a long time since a song has grabbed at my heart like this one does every time. It's the ultimate representation of the pressure put on a lot of the oldest children in dysfunctional families.
IMO the BEST song on the soundtrack. Her raw emotion is what makes this song so perfect.
I would highly recommend continuing the Encanto series with “What else can I do?”

Kudos to the animating and design teams for 5:07. That look breaks me every time i see it. Just the absolute fear in her face and posture. Just the moment where the facade completely breaks down 100%, if just for the moment. And Mirabel just completely looking just as scared, and just lost for what to do. Conveys the ENTIRE point of this song, and its BEAUTIFUL
Watched this with my fiancée and my 6 year old daughter and instantly said “This is by far my favorite Disney song ever” it was fantastic
Oh my gosh!!! Your reaction when the whole musical theme shifts “pressure drip drip drip” was mine…. This is my favorite song. I can totally relate to the message and the musical styles and the dichotomy between the emotion and how we try to hide the stress in our lives. Kinda like when Mirabel sings about how She’s fine, she’s fine and she’s not fine…. Seriously. This whole film is relatable across so many cultures. I love it even more in Spanish!!!
Fun fact! If you listen to this song on Spotify, or without the video in general, you can hear the actress sigh between the opening lines, like a deep exhale. It gets drowned out in the video with the sound effects, but just the song, it's so powerful and adds to the tension and pressure she's feeling. Talking about how she's the strong one -exhale-, she moves mountains -exhale-, so powerful.
I actually didn't particularly like this song when i first watched the movie. It felt too modern to be a Disney song, then I realized I didn't care if it wasn't Disney whimsical, it's amazing and so so good.
One thing I LOVE about this song is that her voice becomes lighter and lighter as the song goes on. So when she is talking and starts the song she has this base to her voice. Its her tough outer sheller. Then the drop into "Pressure like a drip drip drip" it has her voice go higher and it shows that under that shell is this person who is feeling like the weight is crushing her but can't show it. When she switches into the part where she is almost elated talking about relaxation her voice goes just a bit higher and shows this is her "Wistfulness" this is what she deeply wants, needs, but can't voice.
The moment she turns her face away from Mirabel made me want to cry, she is so ashamed of these feelings. She hates that Mirabel is seeing her so "Weak" because she has tried for so long to keep that tough outer shell up and appear like the unmovable mountain of a women she is. She is strong but being strong doesn't mean she can't hurt or need a break. But that look of shame just makes me feel so bad for her because you can see how Mirabel jumps up as the weight stacks up and up and Mirabel has that body language of "What do I do?" because she wants to help but can't and it makes me love their relationship so much because Luisa takes care of Mirabel throughout the song and Mirabel wants so badly to help her sister but doesn't know how.
I love how the lyrics of the verses, "Under the surface I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?" It makes her sound like she's clenching her teeth trying to express how much pressure she's in, making the song and the character even more relatable.
Literally I have no words that could do this song justice
easily my favorite part s the scene after the one with Luisa floating in the clouds. The impact of those boulders dropping just get's me every time, it gives me chills. It's so sudden but not overwhelming. The song isn't trying to be this epic, crazy, loud tune in that specific scene, it's raw and just blends perfectly into the climax. And one thing I can't praise enough is the extremely sudden change between the peacefulness of the previous scene, and the next one. It's so jarring but in a good way. If that whole cloud seen was cut out, the impact between the one before it and the one with the falling boulders wouldn't be as significant.

Something worth mentioning is how the song never peaks. It builds and builds and builds, and then resets with elements from previous lines added in, so it never "pops" as she so well stated. It's great when the method of a song matches the theme of the song.

Just an added comment…at the end of the song, Mirabel hugs her sister which is something that she really needed.

This song is my favorite. I find it relatable because I'm the eldest of 6 and i find everything about this song hitting pressure points and it just makes me emotional lol.
I remember someone saying that Disney songs are only like 60% singing and it's 40% voice acting as well and I totally agree with that statement
The line that gets me is, "Give it to your sister it doesn't hurt and see if she can handle every family burden," just shows how she feels honestly. That line is as vulnerable as it is, as the whole song. Lyrically, this is the best song that was written. Lin Manual did such an amazing job at writing this. but if you actually notice Luisa's face while singing this song, she looks like shes about to cry and it breaks my heart. Round of applause

I like the contrast between the earlier choruses and the last one. There's a duality there, like the pressure is crushing her and in the early choruses she suffers it, she resents it, but in the last chorus her pride comes back in. She's proud of her ability to take the pressure, even as it grinds at her. Her strength is both burden and triumph. It's nicely done.
The actress/singer who plays Luisa is adorable. She's also did a jazz cover of this song, and from a short clip released recently I think she's working on a punk version (at the very least, she did an amazing 30 seconds)

I love how luisa was protecting mirabel the whole music video, it really shows how strong and hardworking luisa is.
Favourite song? That’s tough… I think surface pressure is my fav (looking forward to trying it at karaoke). Bruno is amazing (but might be challenging to make into a karaoke number…)
Dos oruguitas (two caterpillars) is maybe the best song. It’s the one Disney submitted to the Academy for consideration. It’s hauntingly beautiful (especially the soundless visuals juxtaposed to the beautiful acoustic Spanish song)
Speaking of karaoke, I'm pretty sure "Surface Pressure", "Waiting on a Miracle", and "Dos Oruguitas" are the only true solos in the movie. Mirabel has a few lines in "What Else Can I Do", Alma has a stanza in "The Family Madrigal", and "Our Encanto" is a group number that has a few harmonies. On the other hand if I had three or four other people to sing with me I would love to try karaoke-ing "We Don't Talk About Bruno", it would be so fun to do the part at the end where everyone sings at once. I think with my vocal range I'd be best at Pepa's part or maybe Isabela's.
