They give some ideas on determining the right color and size of the quilt you plan to make without the recipient knowing. Sherri then shares a few of the most meaningful quilts she has made as gifts. Jenny Doan had a great suggestion for making a surprise quilt for someone getting married. Make a picnic quilt and get them a picnic basket to go with it. I have done this and it was VERY well received.
I have a friend who loves Tweety Bird (and the color yellow) and recently ordered black leather furniture. She hinted recently that she's wondering when SHE will be getting one of my quilts. LOL. I'm making a string quilt with yellow/black/white patterned fabric for her for Christmas. I hope she likes it.

I made two quilts for my friends grandchildren who lost everything in the Colorado fires last year. I’ve seen them twice since the fire and they both told me how much it means to them. I think quilts given in difficult situations mean so much. Sometimes you just have no words that seem appropriate at a given time, so a quilty hug says just the right thing.
I make care quilts. My sister had brain cancer and during her treatments she would get so chilled. She always asked for a blanket. So when friends or acquaintances go through something similar, I find out favorite colors and go with it. Then a friend or family member will deliver it. Over the years I have received messages about what the quilt meant or still means to them.

I shop at Home Depot sometimes for different things. And often I mention to the guys there that my sewing machine is a power tool. They chuckle a little bit. Until I say you plug it in and it has something that's very sharp that can go through your finger. Just like a lot of those power tools that they use. They look at me surprised and say never thought of it that way. 😂

My Aunt taught me quilting and said to always label your quilts. For the future owners. I always label my quilts
I try and always have extra quilts to give away when someone we know is going thru a difficult time. Sometimes due to illness, sometimes due to a death. My kids call them my death quilts, but when they have a friend going thru difficult times, they ask me if I have a quilt. I feel I am guided in my choice as it has always been the correct choice for the person, even when I don’t know their tastes. Thank for the great podcasts.
I love quilt labels with the quilter's info and reason for giving. Mine all get a label!

I actually made a King Size Quilt for my very first quilt. ( totally crazy right ). It came out amazing. Here in Australia fabrics are super expensive. So it’s case of buy in bulk when on special or you really have to look for patterns I like. The quilt was made for a dear couple who’s birthdays are only two weeks apart and it was for their 60th birthdays. I made Friendship Star all the Stars were made that were to do with their lives. They laughed and cried with excitement when they worked out what each star represented. They have it on the bed and even take it with them when travelling. They absolutely love it. ❤ I felt so proud of myself as I said it was made with so much love and believe a few mistakes along the way but they don’t mind. To them it’s perfect.

I made a quilt for our family exchange where we draw numbers and each pic a wrapped present. Our gifts are suppose to be around $50 value but this was something I wanted to do. My brother in law got it. He seemed so pleased and happy and posed with it with me, and I felt like he was suppose to receive it. Little did any of us know he would pass unexpectedly a couple months later. That quilt is responsible for precious memories . ❤

I've made quilts for people at work who had babies and then I love hearing about them afterwards. One friend said to me later when her baby was older and she had her on the quilt on the floor and her baby was really studying and touching the fabric and she had to tell me about it and that meant so much to me

Thanks so much for your interesting and informative podcasts! I have been making quilts for 25 years and sewing for about 50 years but always learn something and pick up tips or something to ponder from each podcast. I’m recently retired and sewing several hours per day and am catching up on your podcasts while I sew. My question for you is this: while you both have separate businesses, you also work together so well. I’m wondering how much time you spend together to plan and complete your fabric lines? Can you talk about how you work so well together and how you share your creative thoughts to develop so much? I admire you both very much- Sherri for her experience and Chelsi for her newness to quilting. I have two daughters too so I understand the bond you share. Thanks so much for all you contribute to the quilting community.

I walked out of my sewing studio this morning thinking "I have so many things I should have done by now" and was feeling really a bit depressed about it. With your words of advice, I now realize I have been very busy planning our guild July summer retreat for 30 ladies and feeling a bit wiped out as the vendor chair for our quilt show coming up in September. You are so right! I have accomplished a lot and I now realize my goals list was way too aggressive. THANK YOU!!! I needed to hear this today♥
Love your podcast. I have never thought about the shocking factor when sewing barefoot. It is something to think about. You never know - I've also had a friend that walked on a pin in her sewing room. She didn't think anything of it when she went to the doctor thinking they would just pull it out and put a bandage. But NO, she actually had to have surgery that day and a cast. So, our sewing rooms do have some dangers we don't think of. Thanks for all the good content.
I completely agree on giving quilts. My sweet grandson loves dinosaurs so what is a Lulu to do but make him the Elizabeth Hartman Dinosaur quilt! He is so excited about it. I have to get it finished for his third birthday! I am for sure putting a label on that quilt and hope he will cherish it forever.

This pattern is my favorite not realizing it was Chelsi s when I saw SewBecca and Tiffany's Quilting Life.
I just surprised my daughter with a quilt from Chelsea’s Sweet Pea pattern as a gift for her home they are renovating. The panels are perfect for a housewarming and everyone loved it. I used this pattern to make a Bengals/Browns quilt for my 7 year old grandson and a Harry Potter quilt for my granddaughter.
I really enjoy the wonderful and open 3-way interactions.
When in doubt about choosing colors/themes for a wedding or a special birthday, I’ve used Xmas/holiday fabrics….even for a baby quilt!

Favorite Things is such a beautiful line I can’t wait to buy my first bundle ever! I usually just buy what I need for something but I will definitely be getting a bundle to just look at!

Great podcast! Labeling your quilts is so important, but I too struggle with labeling mine and I don’t know why it is. I have even had my quilter add a labels on the backs of my quilts only to leave them blank. Can’t wait for Friday. I have set my alarm! 😉

I always put my name on the quilt. Because years down the road after I am dead and gone, the quilt has an identification of who made it, when it was made, and who I made it for.
I recently saw a statement that speaks to this: One hundred years after I’m gone, they’ll forget who I am But I would love for someone to look at a quilt I made and say, “I have no idea who that is, but this is lovely.”
When it comes to quilt labels, I hand embroidered them. I try to have it ready for a road trip. On my last wedding quilt I kept a log of how long it to took to piece & then to quilt it. The label took me 8 hrs to do. I knew my son & daughter in law would appreciate it. But working on one for my nieces wedding now.

I give quilts as gifts on a regular basis. I figure I can’t use so many quilts myself, why not bring joy to someone else? I do make quilts specifically for others, but I also give quilts on a whim if I feel it’s a good match to the person. That’s the key. The sad part is when a gifted quilt is mistreated. It’s rare, but has happened. In any case, gifting quilts is part of the fun of making them!
If I’m giving a quilt as a gift, it depends on the occasion or reason for gifting and also who the recipient is. I usually label any quilt I’m giving a family member with a special note or message, including my name and year. I use the corner triangle method these days. If I’m giving a quilt to someone and I don’t want to create a fancy label and message, I simply write my name and the year in a bottom corner. This way it’s not obnoxious, but I do feel it’s important to label. I use a micron marker, and heat set it with my iron.

So inspiring...Sherri..thank you for reinforcing that it's best to focus on what we have accomplished. My summer has flown by without as much sewing as planned but I have stayed true to working on my health with exercise and that has helped me to feel better physically. I wanted to add my way of sewing is in my sandals or slippers.
I will label the quilts I make for myself with my name and the year. I typically do not label quilts I make for other people. With the first quilts I made for my each of my daughters I made sort of a dedication label with a quote that fit their personalities

I’ve always been careful with my rotary cutter but you really can’t be too careful. I’ve had a cat who was obsessed with my cutter and would knock it off the table to play with it. The force from hitting the floor can partially open the blade on some styles. Also, I would sew around and with my young niece and nephew and he was very curious about the rotary cutter. I showed it to him and talked about how sharp it is… he just wanted to know how old he needed to be to use it. I saw it as temptation for him. I’ve been in quilt classes and at retreats where there’s a jar and you get ‘fined’ for leaving a rotary cutter open. I prefer to sew barefoot or in socks but am mindful. I was at a class where someone knocked her rotary cutter off the table and it hit the top of her foot and cut through her shoe and into the top of her foot.
I may add to this after the video is over, but I would think y'all being in the designer side of things you would for sure put labels on gift quilts-or any quilt for that matter. Chelsi, why would you not want your name on a quilt you gifted?? To me, that means even more to have who it's from on there 😍😍

After my first cut I got the automatic closing rotary cutter. Never had another accident.
I haven't heard of this one. Will need to look into that as I have cut the end of my finger off! It did grow back 🙏
@@jayneterry8701 it is the Olfa Ergonomic rotary cutter. Blade is exposed only when you squeeze it to cut fabric
I check their wedding or baby registry to get an idea of what colors they'll have in their home

I’ve cut my finger once while cutting fabric. I probably should have gotten stitches because it bled for 2 days. I survived to cut another day, though. But it does make you cautious for a while. I sew with shoes, socks, or barefoot. It just depends on the time of year. If it’s super hot, I go barefoot. If it’s cold, it’s either socks or shoes. It depends on how cold it is in my sewing room. But it is a good idea to wear shoes to protect your toes.
Regarding donating quilts.....I started a new job last year working for Tulsa, Oklahoma's WIC program, just in time to assist with August World Breastfeeding events (4 total), where we had receptions to honor breastfeeding women and those who are considering breastfeeding. Door prizes were being rounded up, and at the time I thought how cool it would be if I could make and donate some baby quilts. Since there was very little time, I reached out to a group I'm in on Facebook and asked if anyone would donate a quilt top, I'd quilt it on my longarm. I hoped to get 3 or 4. Oh my goodness I got sixty! Some were already quilted, thank goodness. And I got some donations of backing, batting and binding. We gave away 20 completed quilts last year, and I've worked my way through quilting most of the stack for this year's events where we are expecting more than 300 moms to attend. So if you'd like to donate some of your quilts or quilt tops to this cause (any size), that would be so amazing! I don't see a way to post a picture with the comments, but will try to find another way to send it. I have a cool picture of this year's quilts lined up on my pool fence. It's pretty impressive! And I've really built my skills as a longarmer through this project! Thank you for considering! Janet Potts
When you drop a rotary cut it will open when it it’s the fall or foot. It can be closed but it will open on impact. For your info

Moda has uploaded the new catalog, Strawberry Lemonade is beautiful. I'm a barefoot sewer, but I have a pair of slip-on shoes that I take off and on. If I'm standing up cutting, my shoes are on. If I'm sitting at my machine, the shoes are off. Sounds nuts.

I actually use my Start/Stop button on my Baby Lock. I started using it a few years ago when I had gout in my knee & couldn’t bend it to sew. Then as it started improving, I realized that although I couldn’t use my foot yet, I could sew with that button! Once I got used to adjusting the speed as needed, I have never looked back! I have not plugged my foot pedal in since!
Okay, since this story came up twice, I’m very curious! The lady who said she got shocked by her foot pedal while sewing, did she mention if her cord was frayed or had some damage to it? If so, I think sewing barefooted or with socks is fine. I think it’s more of a warning to check your sewing machine and foot pedal cords regularly and make sure they are in safe, working condition.

Love a your videos . Just wanted to say that people who work from home sometimes are so hard on themselves and need to know it's ok to throw your to do list out the window or change it . When you both were talking about donating quilts, you could do giveaways to your viewers! I think that would be awesome .
I was thinking the same thing. Yes, we all know how much fun it is to GIVE quilts...but it would also be FABULOUS to receive one in a give away.

I make quilts for people at my church and I never put labels on them. It is just between me and God. My sister always says I need to put labels on them but it is my ministry.
Wedding quilts I would put the wedding invitation and my name in small letters

I always label my quilts, not so good at keeping track of them with pictures for me, but I'm trying to get better about putting pictures in an album that I can look at sometimes to see what I have been doing. For donation quilts I usually put year and our quilt guilds name on them. I did get some Favorite Things fabric and looking forward to Friday's revelation!

Magnolia is stunning, just love it! Chelsi where do I get the quilt kit from you? I looked on your pattern shop and on a quilting life. Where do I look? When Rotory Cutters first came out I got my first one and I cut the edge of my finger off and had to go to the doctor and it was so painful healing. I wore the special gloves for years. I am 70 years old and I am trying to make a LOT of quilts for my granddaughters and daughter for when I am gone. None of my 3 granddaughters are married and I want my daughter to pass them out for when they get married, have babies, birthdays or special occassions. I told my daughter about it afraid she would think it was morbid but she didn't, she thought it was a great idea.

The baby quilt I made we put a poem quote that mom (friend) knew and liked. And date
I really want to make that Magnolia pattern in Favorite things fabric. But love that regal pines patterns a well.
I cut the end of my middle finger off with a rotary cutter.. just about a 1/4 hunk of skin but it was a real problem as it has left a numb spot on my finger. Of course that makes it tricky when I hand stitch as it’s the finger I use to help under the hoop to direct the needle. Strange how a sharp blade can really effect you for so long!! I have diff slowed down now when cutting!!

Beautiful quilts and can’t wait for new collection📍 I make Christmas quilts as weddings gifts. You should label your quilts because you are designers (famous) in quilting. I always do surprise quilts because that way I can make what I want and enjoy the process❣️ I do a better job if I’m enjoying my sewing.

Quilt labels are so important! My grandmothers both passed away when they were 28, leaving their children to grow up without a mother. One left a quilt, and Grandpa kept it on his guest bed. When I spent the night with him he would sit on the edge of the bed and tell me stories about the fabrics in the quilt. I think those stories are one reason I was drawn to quiltmaking. When he died his quilt was given to his church. Oh how I wish I could find that quilt because of all the memories I have. But there was no label, so there is no way to even look. Because of this I do add labels to any quilt I make, even if I don't plan to give it to any one specifically. I even added a label to a quilt my Mom made for her first great granddaughter shortly before she died. I know that granddaughter will treasure that quilt even more because I could tell her stories about her great grandma and her work! Take pride in your work. Somewhere in time someone will want to know who spent the hours it took to make their treasure.
I think for weddings it's easier because i would use their wedding colors... but yes looking at their home decor
My Evergreen quilt kit from FQS is supposed to arrive today. Hope so. Wanted to start on time, as had a vaycay in the middle of the Haunted Halloween sew along, and had to play catch up. I still have some Seashore Drive fabric I saved.....as loved it so much.
Well, I guess I’m just a risk taker. I will continue to sew barefooted. I keep my shoe right by my pedal, and only take it off when my foot is on the pedal. I put it on to walk around or what have you. My other foot always has the shoe on it. But it’s a flip-flop, so not sure how much safer that would be.😂😂😂

Question about gifting a quilt to someone in a hard time- I find this usually is unexpected. So do you gift them a quilt that is already totally finished? Do you finish a quilt top that's already made? Do you whip an entire quilt up as quickly as possible? I really enjoy gifting and I think it does mean a lot to someone going through a hard time. Just curious how you approach it!
My family wants a label on the quilts I give them & I put the date completed, who I made it for & that I made it. It matters to them because otherwise there will be quilts (like the antique & vintage ones are now) that no one knows the importance of it. I have a quilt that my husband’s great aunt was given by the ladies she taught to quilt in a program paid by the WPA in the mountains of Alabama. It is not in good condition but it is important to us for her legacy!
I really enjoyed this episode and have several comments to make. One is about gifting baby quilts. Sometimes I know what colors will go with the nursery but other times I don't and I feel like the one I make can be the one they put on the floor at outings because it isn't THE ONE that matches everything perfectly. About quilt labels; I feel very strongly about labeling quilts because my mother was a prolific and generous quilter. She quilted until she was 95 years old and she is no longer with us. I love looking at the labels on the quilts she made me and seeing her handwriting, the date she made it and if it was for a specific occasions like an anniversary. Because of that I label all of my quilts unless they are for donation. If I don't know who they are for, which happens occasionally, I put a machine stitched label in the binding that says "Made by Nancy". I also like to name my quilts if they are of my own design. My son is getting married this summer and they live on an island. I made a quilt with patchwork the shape of the island and appliqued it onto fabric like water. I put a small heart where their house is and called the quilt "Home is Where the Heart Is." If nothing else I think they will appreciate the thought.
