After a year of living in a Camper I can say this, it is totally possible to get some sewing projects done while “camping”. I have my entire sewing stash with me (there was no way I was going to put all my fabric in storage when we learned we had no place to live), it’s challenging working in a small space when you also have to live in that small space, but quilting brings me so much joy that I knew I had to hang on to the ability to do so for the sake of my mental health during this difficult time. All that to say, large space or small, power or none, indoors or out, big projects or small, if there’s something that makes you happy that relieves some stress, it’s worth figuring out how to make something work. ❤. Thank you Sherri, Chelsi, and Billy for all that you do to inspire, encourage everyone who follows you. ❤
I agree with you about the physical activity. I have a disiblity due to a major back surgery. When I am hurting and in pain from this I tend not to want to walk or go to the gym but I find when I do walk and go to the gym my mind and my physicial condition is much better. Sometime I have to "force" myself to go, you know self talk, and I always feel better. Thank you for bringing this up.
great episode! I love hearing how people relate to creativity and resetting and dealing with slumps! I retired a couple of months before COVID and then moved and downsized a year and half later. One thing I find is that I need to set out my day and keep something close to my old work schedule. After 35 years working for lawyers where i really needed to be on top of things, I thought it would be okay to slack off. That just amounted to "nothing is getting done". Keeping to a schedule and including days to "catch up" works wonderfully. I also "work" a 4 day week so I do have days of "slacking off" which allows for hiking and window shopping and museums and especially playing with the grandkids. I'm really looking forward to your Strawberry Lemonade fabric - I think it's going to be perfect to work with during dreary winter days here in western NY
My season is caring for my husband who is working from home and is having health issues. He needs help with food and getting around. I have my quilting room and he has his office and the television. We are learning.
I knew a couple who did their day like they were in their office. He was a consultant who worked from home. She was a well known quilter Irma Gail Hatcher. They would eat breakfast and go to their seperate offices. They would stop for lunch and then go back to work. They did this for many years. It always fascinated me how they handled their lives.
Great tips for the wall hanging and pillow idea. A wall hanging feels very doable for me and it would be so pretty. Also love the quilt behind Billy and I have Emma fabric so it was great to see it in the quilt. Thank you Billy for listing all of the quilt names and locations in the notes!
This was a great episode with some wonderful topics. I agree that there is something about this time of year. Where I am, I am already noticing how dark it is in the morning and the daylight hours are getting shorter. I think I will try a "restart" by not working as much overtime and getting out of work closer to the end of my shift so that I can enjoy the rest of the daylight hours before the season changes again!
Talking about reading a book. It was Beatrix Potter's birthday 2 wee,s ago so I got out my book with all her stories. So very day or so I read one. What a talented women she was. Still sewing in ky. Love your quilts and show.
Yes, he does. He moderates the whole show very good. Doesn’t interrupt, livens it up, doesn’t try to be funny. I’ve seen other shows where the individual interrupts or talks too much, etc. it was a good podcast before Nilly joined, but got better when he joined the Quilting Life crew.
I still workout to Step Reebok! Very good episode! I just retired a year ago and sewing for a year seriously! Sitting all day is BAD REAL BAD! I love quilting i can sew 24/ 7 I have sewn many times 24 hours straight. It fun sometimes. I do not plan on getting fat! Because I love quilting. We have to have structure in our lives. Sometimes, I would push the limit and not do anything, but sew my kegs would swell. No way, never again. Quilting can not be our only enjoyment! That's like eating all our cake at one time!
Wow!!!! Gorgeous "out in Wild views " quilts beautiful. I can see a trend with Sherri & Chelsi's fabrics touring the country❤ awesome views and awesome quilts❤
All life experience is potentially food for the creative process. An open mind and curiosity are the most important attributes. “What would that look like?” “How would that work?” “Can this be sung?” These and similar questions get us exploring ideas that use our past experiences.
Hello Billy, Sherri and Chelsi: I enjoyed today's video so much. In your past videos, I enjoyed hearing about your hole-in-one and all the comments from viewers who also had a hole-in-one and who also quilt. It happened to me in the 90's and was quite a thrill. Mine was on a downhill par 3 and wondered -is it going in, is it going in, and it did. Now I am a quilter and thoroughly enjoy it. So I guess I am also on the list of quilting, hole-in-one golfers. Thanks to all of you for your quilt videos. I especially enjoy the viewer question episodes. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to the next time.
I am like Sheri in that I can read multiple books at once. For me, it is like keeping up with different tv shows. My daily routine has changed because I graduated from college the same week that I started homeschooling my son for 7th grade (already homeschooling but took 3 months off). I reset by cleaning and destashing. I donated a huge box of craft items. I feel like that has opened the door to guilt free and fun sewing time.
The Alaskan pictures (and Chelsi's reaction) make me happy to see and hear your reactions. Yes, beautiful country around us here, and we'd welcome your family to come up, too. Just a hint, Sherri and Chelsi, I have lots of contacts of quilt guilds and shops in Alaska! I've been Alaska State Coordinator for Quilts of Valor Foundation for many years, so know where to find the best shops and guild around.😇
Hearing the last conversation makes me think of Gretchen Rubin (@gretchenrubin). She talks about how back-to-school or LaborDay can be a catalyst for change similar to New Year. Loved this episode as I do all of them. Thank you!
Billy, when you mentioned sports teams colors I immediately thought of the color wheel. Most teams colors are opposite/complementary of each other on the color wheel which is why they are so eye catching! There is also some psychology behind choosing colors. For example red is considered aggressive.
This was such a great podcast! You hit multiple topics that we can all take away and apply to our day. I have been in a bit of a 'funk' these past few weeks and I couldn't figure out why. I think I put too much on my plate and was not very realistic about my quilting goals this year. It sounds funny saying I needed a break because I'm retired haha. But I took on a major role with my quilt guild prep'ing for an upcoming quilt show in Sept and that has taken more of my energy than I expected. You are so right though, this time of year is the perfect time to get re-organized on so many fronts - holiday plans, handmade Christmas gifts, revisiting your goals... I want to start journaling but I was not sure where to start. Thank you Sherri for sharing your journaling practices. You opened up my eyes on ways I can journal and it doesn't have to be so formal. I was trying to be more prescriptive which Is totally opposite of what journal should be. Oh, you're gonna love yoga, it is great for core strength, flexibility, and the breathing is great for mental relaxation. Sorry Chelsi, I agree with Sherri. Your daughter's kitty is a teddy bear🤣🤣🤣
We care for our great grandson while mom works. Back to school is a schedule change for us too. It does make a difference in how we do life during this season.
I’m an RV (recreational vehicle) quilter. We spend the summer on Prince Edward Island, Canada and I bring several quilting projects with me. This summer I’ve completed 4 quilts before my children and grandchildren visited for a month. There is at least one RV quilters group on Facebook so there are a lot of us out here camping and quilting. Your podcasts are terrific! Thank you for all the thought and planning you all put into providing the great podcasts!
Great podcast. I am late to the video but better late then never. If I listen to music I cook creatively or clean house( dancing with cat or dog until they run and I am left with a broom/ mop/ vacuum). When I sew I listen to podcast or reruns on tv for noise.
Love your podcast! Always brightens my week. What is the quilt behind Chelsi? Thank you for all you do for me and others....in quilting, and in life. You are an inspiration!
Another great podcast!! Loved hearing about creativity, how to get it back and how to keep it!! School started back almost a week ago here so getting more time to create!!😍 Thanks you all for everything you do for us!!
This episode so timely for me. With end of summer I planned to "restart my downsizing" so very applicable to jumpstart my declutter/downsizing schedule. Thank you
I’m from Trinidad in the Caribbean and two things are different when school’s out that makes the atmosphere feel different…the office is generally empty since most people take VL to go do stuff with their kids and the traffic on the way to and from work is significantly less. Everything feels more relaxed when school is out.
Really enjoyed your episode. Made me realize the being of the school year is my new year. I have always had to adjust work and play around the new school year. Even though my kids are grown, I still make new goals and schedules this time of the year. Thanks for all of your wonderful creative ideas!! Have a great year!!!
Sherri, I used to do step aerobics and still have my step. Now that I’m older I enjoy walking and really got into yoga a few years ago. It really helps with muscle tightness especially after sewing and I find it very relaxing. Hope you do too!
My kids are grown, but there is definitely a change of routine when school starts. Around the neighborhood and community, you notice the changes when you go shopping out to appointments. Also, I have been bullet journaling for about 10 years and that helps me manage my time and is a great creative outlet.
My creativity comes out when I have a book of grid paper and a box of colored pencils. I also discovered needle felting, and I love to create 3-D animals. They are faster than making a quilt. I can felt an animal in a few hours.
Love the green border on coastal summer. Chelsi, don’t be hard on yourself concerning work and home. As a small business owner before retired and mother of 3, it was hard. Good to plan, but give yourself some grace when every day life doesn’t go to plan. You will never give what seems to be enough to both work and home. And then there is YOU. I think you are fortunate in that hopefully your job also fulfills YOU. Too much to do in summer. Winter gives me an excuse to stay in and quilt or cross stitch. So now that retired I love winter.
Andrew Huberman had Rick Rubin on his podcast, HubermanLab, a while ago, and they talked about some of the science behind creativity. I enjoyed listening to him. I bet the book is super interesting! Also, I love your podcast and I just finished the Evergreen QAL with Fat Quarter Shop using Favorite Things. I have an FQ bundle of Favorite Things and 3 yards of the multi-colored polka dot for a future quilt! :-)
It feels like a change it’s a transition from summer to the coming fall and I notice it in the shorter days here in California. It used to get dark at 8:45 now by 825. It is getting dark so the days are getting shorter, and that tells me that there’s a change.
Another great book about creativity is “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. It includes many of the strategies you’ve touched upon in this video, like journaling.
As I contemplated the last topic, because today is first day back to school in Arkansas, I noticed that I felt a renewed sense of "get it done!" And for many, the beginning of school does bring about a sense of change. I was a student a long time, then had children go to school, then had grandchildren go to school, went back to school and became a teacher, and now retired but I don't think that sense of change when school starts will ever go away. It is a great time to re-evaluate and plan! Thanks for all you guys do!
Hello, I hope you're safe over there? I hope this year brings happiness, prosperity, love 💚 , and peace all over the world 🌏. I would love us to be good friends in honesty and in trust so as time goes on it will bring something great for us in the future, hope you don't mind? I'm Gabriel Wood from Brooklyn New York, where are you from if I may ask?❤
I would love to see some pages of your sketchbook. Are they things or designs that would help you see a new pattern? I totally enjoy ever episode of your podcast. You inspire me to learn more. Thanks for all you share with the quilting community. Nancy in New Mexico
Loved this episode! Chelsi, I was intrigued to hear you say that your children read with your grandma on the phone - how does that work? My grandchildren all live in different countries and I'd love to be able to be involved with their lives in a way like this ❤
A friend always has reading time with her granddaughter when she is out of town. They get on their phone or iPad and my friend reads one page or chapter and her granddaughter reads the next. She did this while we were on a quilt retreat and it was so fun listening to them both giggle!
I have found that I feel more creative once I find the perfect quilt pattern & hit the quilt shop. I tend to have my husband with me when picking out fabric. So, when he wants to fish I say yes to go out. By the end of fishing I am ready to continue sewing blocks together.
Great topic ! ah yes cleaning sew room is good reset creativity. and cleaning home for 5 minutes magical continues on ! learning so much from you all many thanks for a great podcast series and utube
Hi from NZ, watching replay while relaxing with after work coffee. Just wondering when we might see Billy's next sewing project that has been promised (quite some time ago) lol. Love your podcasts & videos, thank you. As to the change of seasons, there IS definitely a shift here Down Under too
Creativity is a great topic to cover! I have been faced with less time in recent years to be creative, & I realized that it is a very big part of who I am. So I am making a huge effort to make it into my sewing room as many days as possible. And I am organizing my scraps (a very big undertaking) that is helping me think creatively!

First let me say, I LOVE STRAWEBERRY LEMONADE!!! And i love your idea about a smaller project on the medallion quilt, so i probably MUST order it. :) This past weekend i was making pillows with some Sherri and Chelsi fabrics. I have a jelly roll of Emma and a charm pack from simply delightful. both work so well together. I love your podcast, i listen to it on my commute to work and i think you have calmed my road rage due to construction that will never end. Ohio was made for orange cones. I also make dolls and there are a few that are just dying for the strawberry lemonade fabric. in fact i am sketching up an entire line and i think they just might have to sip lemonade at their next show. Thank you , Chelsi and Billy for all you do. you are all amazing!!!!
Sherri I’m also reading Creativity Inc right now! It’s neat, as an IT professional, learning from a man who essentially invented the Internet. Chelsi, could we get a cute little woodland animal in the next collection, please, pretty please? A squirrel, chickadee, or owl perhaps?? Could we ever expect to see a panel from you two? PS adding Bountiful Blooms to my Christmas list and hoping and praying fat quarters or half yards go on a flash sale on Fat Quarter Shop soon.
Starting with a neat space. Although the process might end up discombobulated as the flow and protect progress but I like to start fresh each day. I also have pages and pages as I am trying to get started in fabric design 😊😊😊😊. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
I had a really productive summer- finishing several projects in quick succession. Now I can't seem to get going again. I am starting a new sew along that has some new techniques for me - appliqué (I have done 1x before) and paper piecing. Hoping this will be a good challenge to break this slump.
I wonder if most of us who quilt loved to color when we were kids. I look at quilting as just another form of coloring. I also think of cross stitch as coloring with thread.
A joke with me and my son regarding time, I always went into my sewing room early right after I ate breakfast - like 7:30 - and sew until about 11:30 to noon for lunch and he would say that he always called between 11:30 and 1:30 because he joked that he could get me at that time. I stopped sewing around 4 to 4:30 to prepare dinner.
I've never hung a quilt before, but am now looking for wall space to hang some. Do you always hang the same size quilt in the space or is it possible to change sizes?
I have really enjoyed this video. Speaking to some of your points, I think the community thing is important however my experience of them is not so rewarding, I have found there are members who are very assured and view their own work so highly that you feel deflated, I choose not to go.I no longer regard mistakes as mistakes, I wish we could delete that word from our vocabulary they are just learning moments. As to what I hate in videos it is sniffing , I have watched several where I just gave up.❤ I love the quilt behind you to my left which has Hexie flowers on it I have a box of left over basted Henie’s and think this quilt could use some up. Could we have a close up of that please.
Why did you two choose not to go to the Moda retreat? We have heard Sherri talk about how much she misses retreats before. Will you try to go to the next one at The Gathering?
I get confused...when you say the quilt is made witha fat eighth my mind says...hmm, that's all i need. What exactly are you referring to? just the patchwork itself and no extra fabric to round out the block? Can you clarify please?
After a year of living in a Camper I can say this, it is totally possible to get some sewing projects done while “camping”. That’s so thoughtful of you Sarah, Thanks for your positive review,How are you and how’s the weather over there?
Chelsea I am right there with you. I can go from Broadway musicals to some Disturbed in a snap. There's something in all types of music I love. 🎵

Nice to see the beautiful quilts behind Billy. Thank you so much for your videos!

good work saty content with me
yes When Spring hits us in NSW Australia there is something in the air ! currently winter
Good one! I sew for a living and have an Etsy shop so this is important for me. Thanks
I think, too, that with Daylight Savings Time, when it gets dark earlier, it makes you want to stop sewing earlier, get dinner done earlier, etc…

When I need a break from sewing. I crochet and cross stitch ❤
@@jeffersonmorant I’m confused with your comment.
Enjoyed
I had a really productive summer- finishing several projects in quick succession. Now I can't seem to get going again. I am starting a new sew along that has some new techniques for me - appliqué (I have done 1x before) and paper piecing. Hoping this will be a good challenge to break this slump.
That’s so thoughtful of you Michelle, Thanks for your positive review,How are you and how’s the weather over there?
agree Chelsi sport even just a half hour swim help make the slump disappear ~
I wonder if most of us who quilt loved to color when we were kids. I look at quilting as just another form of coloring. I also think of cross stitch as coloring with thread.
I use my yoga mat to stand on when I cut or iron. Softens the floor. 😮

I get color combinations in Nature. We live on a ranch.
looking forward to my delivery of Big Magic bought when i saw you present it in patrone group. hurray up 20th aug from amazon
Here in Minnesota school doesn’t start until first week of September, so still in summer mode for a few weeks 🤗
I've never hung a quilt before, but am now looking for wall space to hang some. Do you always hang the same size quilt in the space or is it possible to change sizes?
Most recent sewing notion was a new Quilters Select ruler.
Billy did you get goodies from the company your using when you got a hole in one? Titliest gave me a bag tag hole in one and towels and pins.
is that a bountiful blooms quilt behind Chelsi's shoulder. It's georgous. What is the pattern?
What is the collection used for the quilt on the table please.
How can I find out which shops in my area sell your yardage and precuts. I live near Des Moines
Why did you two choose not to go to the Moda retreat? We have heard Sherri talk about how much she misses retreats before. Will you try to go to the next one at The Gathering?
I am in a slump!! I have no room for sewing so I just shut the door and don’t want to go back in there ☹️
I get confused...when you say the quilt is made witha fat eighth my mind says...hmm, that's all i need. What exactly are you referring to? just the patchwork itself and no extra fabric to round out the block? Can you clarify please?
What is the name of the quilt hanging behind Billy?
