2022 Yamaha R7 - First Ride Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2024
- Yamaha invited Iconic to Atlanta Motorsports Park for the US press launch of the 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 - here's what Abhi had to think!
If you can get over the name (and you can), the new R7 offers a compelling street-legal track package at a very reasonable price. Yamaha’s got a simple argument - sportbikes are too expensive and too capable for the average 19-26 year old buyer, so they made one that’s more approachable in terms of price and ease of use. It’s a triumph of common sense: the 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 is what the average sportbike rider needs in terms of style, chassis, suspension, and braking, but there’s a not-so-small part of me that wonders if ~75 horsepower is what they want.

Out of all the videos about the R7, this is definitely the best review.
100% the last bit was icing on the cake.
Agree
can't dispute that ✌🏽🤙🏽🙏🏼
Yeah this indian guy nailed it.
Watched many big UA-camrs reviews on r7 but none of them explain the pros of this bike. Your review is far the best i watch on r7
Best review on R7 than rest of the reviews in UA-cam, final touch with old R7 though ...👌
Out of all of the R7 reviews that have been posted recently, this is the one I’ve been looking forward to the most.
Yup, subscribed!
Yeah
99.9% of people who have a "strong opinion" about the original R7 have never ridden one. Most have never even seen a real one up close.
Straight up. It's like people being upset the new Mustang Mach-E uses the Mustang name... WHO cares? It's a name!!
I'd add that these same people probably can't ride a supersport bike to even 50% of its capability or just do freeway runs like that 650ib joker. That bloke has no business reviewing any motorcycle.
True!
99 percent of people who have such an issue with other peoples "strong opinions" regarding the lack of R in this R7 dont even ride anything at all............
Yeah I never knew that another R7 existed ahahah
Not too much fluff, straight to the point. Best review like others have said. Ty!
This was probably the best review on the R7 I’ve seen so far. 👍👍
Some people are REALLY hating on the r7. I'm thinking Yamaha is making a great move here. Most people can't afford an r6, but the r7 is within budget and is obviously a more practical machine
Sales figures don't lie.
I'm from Malaysia & your analysis & evaluation really speaks out and there you go with my subscription and likes.
Congrats Abhi, you knocked it out of the park mate! Solid, balanced and honest review. Not gonna lie, I'm really hoping for an R7M with proper ohlins suspension and use of Supersports tech from the R6 to get it up to 100hp.
Super cool bike and I want one. Back in 2007 when I bought my R6 brand new it was $9999 out the door for the brand new model year, not even a leftover!
For a frame of reference on prices: in 1985 I bought one of the first batch of the new Ninja 600R motorcycles in America for about $3,500.
@@Land-Shark That is awesome.
Wow. Someone who knows how to ride on track vs Chaseontwowheels or 650ib who looked like they never seen a track before. Thank you for an honest review.
Yeah I don't want to be rude but I want to see it thrashed not wobbled around on. I had to go through several reviews before seeing it ridden how I want to see it ridden. If you can't push it then I can't really give weight to a review of it.
LOL yeah Chase basically did a street review on the track..
Not a fan. But I can’t wait to smoke all these new R7 riders with my old R6..... 🤣
Lol true!
I doubt they’ll even twist the the throttle past 60 percent.
Yeah, which is why Yamaha has expressly stated that this is not a replacement for an R6. However, if it gets a bunch of "new riders" buying bikes then we all win.
Ooooooof. This was satisfying and that OG R7 at the end... Cherry on Top 🍒
Sub'd.
The best Review about the R7.An Real Owner of the Original R7 Understand What Yamaha Did.. Pretty Honest..
Huge fan of Iconic! Adam and Steve are next level.
oh man i'm so glad i watched this review, just for the classic R7 at the end!! Me want!!
I think they should have used the mt 09 or whatever that 3 cyl 900 is called to make a R9.
You and me both! I suspect that we'll see one in the next year or two, assuming the R7 does alright sales-wise.
I could see myself enjoying the heck out of the R7 at the track!
Excellent review- presenter is amazing- he might be able to bring back moto journalism
Its really the best power level for people wanting to start track riding. Looking forward to this bike hitting the streets here in Sydney.
Dude, so true, great review! So glad I found your channel!
I'll stick with my 15 year old SV650 which is basically equivalent
But your sv650 is so ugly.
That ending. What a beautiful bike.
Had to bust out the original R7 at the end!
We felt like we had to!
I been to iconic motorbikes. Owner is a super cool guy.
I love all the rare bikes you can purchase & auction for.
I gotta admit he's right, this is what the motorcycle community needs. If it attracts a new generation of riders that's a good thing. I'm good with my FZ-07 and R6 for now, but when the R9 comes out I might have a look.
The faux outrage is hilarious. Most have never even seen let alone owned a 90s R7. It's been 20 yrs folks, let it go. It didn't even win a WSC title FFS. Yes it did awesome in BSB but again, long time ago...
I've been a sportbike fan since the 80s. I could care less about the use of the "R7" title for this bike myself. Having track ridden several liter class sport bikes as well as a couple of Super Sports, on one hand I think "75 HP is nothing". On the other hand I think, my old SV650 was a pretty fun street bike, and on twisty back roads was limited by its cheap suspension before being limited by its power output.
I am lost.
Yamaha got me into motorcycling with R3.
R7 with 72hp is hardly a full step up from 42hp R3.
90hp triple engine would have been awesome. They could sell it for $9999. I would be thrilled about it.
But 72hp R7 for $8999. meh...
Don't you worry! It seems obvious that an R9 is on the way.. with the sweet triple of the MT09. Just a couple of months, I hope!
Well, 30hp + different ergo + different gearing make a lot of difference compared to an R3.
Just think that a race prep R3 makes around 50hp with 10k$ of mods , and has been proved that an R3 make around 36HP at the wheels, not the declared 42HP (www.norton-motorsports.com/yamaha-r3-mt03-exhaust-dyno-test-and-superbike-build/ )
Anyway you just have to try one before you choose what to buy, if it's too little improvement over an R3 just get another one, nothing wrong in this
@@MoonlightHusky very well said...
almost two times more hp and more than 2 times in torque(which means it gains speed a lot faster) is not a step up? What is step up then, 42 hp -> 200hp? It's rare that you can ride powerful bike to it's fullest, most riders would never be able to ride even middleweight supersports to their fullest
@@PetroDobrynin I think most (myself included) can't ride an r3 to the very fullest ahahah
Great review. You’re a very good presenter. Keep up the great work. Subscribed ✅
i'm one of the next gen who doesn't know about the old R7. So i don't mind at all. And i think Yamaha will bring out the R7 the close the big gap between R7 and R1.
R7 is perfect for me to ride on street and 1-2 trackdays a year.
what the price of the old R7 now?
Around £25,000 in the uk
This is an excellent review, that opening hit points i never even thought of while initially roasting this bike lol
Old is gold . Old R7 Sound hustle
Even How good the new R7 looks but no body can beat the exhaust note of inline 4 motor, this really needed an inline 4 motor with 100bhp power similar to CBR 650R
Will consumer buy it
Yes if they price it similarly to CBR 650R or little higher
And to keep the cost down they have to produce the bike in Asia
Nothing beats the scream of an Inline 4 high up but I actually own an MT07 and I’ve grown to love it a lot. Even though I don’t have an aftermarket exhaust too.
Nice work!
You just keep going.. Subscribers will keep coming! 😉
2 mins in and he already made the bike sound perfect
great video and explanation on why it was made
MT-R7
Great introduction
Good presentation congrats! Lot of infos!
What a totally badass review! 🏆
Nice! Already sold out, the I’ll get one next summer. Rocking an upgraded R3 this summer, hopefully do a track day or two.
they are sold out? dont you have to order them?
What's the street riding position comfort level? I've owned a FZ-07 on The Big Island and the fun factor is off the charts. That engine is the best and all anyone needs on the street! I would pay the extra grand for the frame/suspension/clutch upgrades with a MT-07 riding position.
It's pretty extreme - the relationship of bars to seat and pegs is almost identical to a R6.
@@IconicMotorbikes Thanks !
Great review. I think this bike is going to have the same issues my first street bike had ( XJ600 "SECA II") it was a sexy bike for its time, but under powered, compared to it's stable mate the FZR 600. It wasn't meant to be a "sportbike" but it sold like like one, its first year, because it was cheap, sexy, and a really good ( ummm decent) bike for the price. Problem is nobody wanted a seca II anymore, after they realized it could barely keep up with its sub 600cc competitors ( EX 500, and the GS 500E. ) This bike will suffer the same death. I think the MT07R, is a great value for money bike, but it is not in class of the YZF-R series name. It is being mis-labeled, and going to leave a lot of people with a bad time. So here is the deal, do I love it? I do. To me this is the modern SECA II.. I want one,, but I also know exactly what I am getting.
I.M. how did I just find this channel?! I love iconic motorcycles! Love the cinematic excellence! Great job! Definitely much rather have the old generation r7, but like you said I understand the “r7” re launch. I think I’d fully mod a r3 instead and go with the cheaper fz07, than this r7 and also keep my 05 gen r6! Yeah boi!!!!! RIP street R6:( is it legal to street legalize the new race r6 bikes?
At this point, Yamaha has only announced that the R6 RACE will be going to Europe. They will not be street legal.
@@IconicMotorbikes ah dang! Europe and Japan always seem to get the cooler versions of vehicles, 4 wheels & 2. You guys ever think about teaming up with
www.kaplancycles.com for a west/east coast moto event? That’d be sick!
Kinda surprised they launched an R7 first. I understand trying to get new riders in the door, but it seems there are a bunch of guys hooked on riding sport that haven't upgraded since 2005 because nothing better has been introduced since then? An R9 would have had every one of those guys lined up at the dealership (including myself). lol Either way, hope an R9 is in the works! Love the direction Yamaha is going!
Yeah, I can't get the idea of an R9 out of my head. So much want!
All facts!! Great review!
Best review I’ve seen
I'm dying to get it !
They lowered the buck and also lowered the bang...i believe they will have the same problem
Nice looking bike
I get the entry level price point, but why kill off the very capable R6? And going from a 75 hp new R7 to an R1 (as he discusses) is a huge leap. Good review and I'm sure the new R7 is fun to ride, but not for me. Interesting how so many of the comments are about the old Haga R7 at the very end - just shows thats' what people want. Stuff an updated and worked 750 cc inline 4 into a R6 frame. Last time I checked, Suzuki isnt having problems selling GSXR 750s.
Yamaha killed of the R6 due to poor sales and Euro 5 emissions regulations, in their mind it wasn't worth the investment to update the bike for the low number of sales.
@@IconicMotorbikes Thanks for the clarification. Sad to see the middleweight I4's fading away
This bike is fantastic but I wish the handlebars are more comfortable like cruisers. I can afford $30K super bike easy but I am looking for a reliable med power light motorcycle. This bike fits me well but it is out of stock. If you are looking for more power high end bike, there are many available at a higher price but you should not blame Yamaha for offering an affordable bike.
We've got 5 pre-orders and have 4 open orders for the R7. Demo Street event is next week at Dreyer Motorsports and hopefully a R7 is on that truck.
Great video brother , thanks !
R6 for life! 🥳
Nice reporting.
I've had my SV650s since 2004, I think this is my next bike.
This is the bike Suzuki should have made 10 to 15 years ago.
it should have been called R5 instead of R7
MT-07
XSR700
Ténéré 700
R7
Go and chip of 200cc out of the bore. And name it r5🙏🙏🙏😘
For a bike like this, would have been nice for Yamaha to do the US press launch on some twisty public roads like Palomar Mountain / Montezuma Grade in San Diego County. Conditions similar to where it would be likely to be used. I don't think anyone is really going to view this as a serious track bike, including Yamaha.
I get what you're saying, but the R7 is competing in the MotoAmerica Twins Cup and won the first two races of the championship:
www.yamaha-racing.com/motoamerica/news/victory-on-the-high-banks--yamaha-r7-fires-first-shot-at-daytona/
@@IconicMotorbikes Hmm, well that is pretty cool!
Nicely everything said!
I agree with you, but we may all agree that naming a begginer's sport bike after a racing legend is truly disappointing even if they had their good reasons to do so. So sorry but for me is just a marketing move and nothing more than a big NO.
My 2006 R1 came stock with a Brembo radial master cylinder, so this definitely isn't the first Yamaha to come with one.
I guess we'll have to see if Yamahas logic pays out,
Will people go for the R7 or spend a bit more and get cbr650r or aprilia rs660
Not R7 for sure, I got full mt07 so I need more now. And when I say more I don't talk about plastic ahah
The R7 is obviously going to be the value bike when cross shopping the three. An extra $2500 for an RS660 is a big jump to riders on a budget. Yamaha should drop an R9 with the CP3 and keep the price under $11,500 USD. That would really blow things up.
If this was the CP3, MT09 engine it would be a fun and peppy bike , not the kind of upgrade for R3 owner
this video make alots of sense why Yamaha make the R7 this way
I still have hard time to find rear sprocket difference between MT07 and this. Is there any reduction?
U nailed it! 💥🤙
I love this ❤️
I hope yamaha sells this with the blinker-mirrors
The blinkers and mirrors will be separate, at least in the US..
@@IconicMotorbikes sad sad
Cost has been ridiculous, i remember when you can buy a 600cc for 6,7 grand and 1000cc for 9,10 grand. Now they are car prices smh
Yamaha R1 2021🇫🇷🏁
I'm gonna be honest, I've never heard of the old r7 until people started complaining about this namescheme here
I wasn't paying alot of attention when the soundtest of the old r7 was on play. I was really shocked at first thinking the parallel 2 of the new bike sounded that good. And then I saw the bike :(
I was on the DONT like it’s called R7 list too. It is a nice looking bike but I would much rather have a 600.
Had they made it with the mt09 engine, it would have been good, but 74 hp is too low for an experienced rider. I can only see it beign popular as a starter bike, which might be what yamaha is going for.
@@RexMuffin Starting bike but for a beginner to put out $9k sounds difficult
@@reddpill I don’t really disagree with you. When I first heard an r7 was coming out I was really taken back by what it ended up being. But all honestly call it what they want it’s not a bike I would even consider buying. I think they needed something for the European market since they knocked the 600 in the head.
@@mainscreen4939 Not impossible, but yeah, quite expensive for a first bike that is true
@@RexMuffin I bought a Duke 390 for my first bike and it has been great so far. The duke has more than enough power at nearly half the price
Holy shit it looks so good
Like u would look at it irl like it's an exotic bike
They really should test things with an R9
the R6 engine sound was my absolute favorite. and it really make me sad to hear it now only track bike.
The Reincarnation of R7 Has happen. The New R7 Has Reliable engine of twin cylinder and handles Like A Legendary R7(2002).
Good review... sub
I think they should have built a SS around the fz09 triple platform. That would have made more sense to me.
I see some room for little bit upgrade the engine, replace stock muffler, air box and filter, Stock Engine compression 11.5:1 upgrade to 12.5:1 like R25, and remap ECU, hope gain some 4-5HP.
No problem doing that
I mean its mt07 engine, u can mod it out to the ground
Best affordable good looking bike
DV also gave the reviews on R7 😍😍😍😍
I have a R6 and its a track bike not a commute friendly ride...
The R7 yes that name but how many people have one or even ridden one as only 500 units were produced.
Iconic yes affordable No
The R7 is a great upgrade from a R3 or a Ninja 400 not fast enough to scare the shit out of you but good enough to keep you interested.
Remember Asia is Yamahas market Not western country's and this will sell big in Asia I'm a little disappointed it doesnt have TC and at least 2 ride modes for 9k
Lets see how it goes in the real world 🗺
Im sure in time we will have a R9? to bridge the gap between 75 hp R7 and a188 hp R1
@Scott Summers The power is way higher at low rpm wich makes it better in the city. I still prefer the r6. The r7 is a starter bike, or a good upgrade from a 300-400cc bike I guess.
@Scott Summers spot on you can use it all unlike the R6 in 2nd at 16000 rpm on the freeway pinging its head 📴 which it loves lol 😂 but practical no its a race bike
@Scott Summers They changed alot more than just the fairings and the name. As for traffic, on my z650, i can just engage the first gear and just let it go forward without even twisting the throttle. When I see sportbike riders, they have to keep burning their clutch to move that slow. An engine like the one of an mt07 is simply better at low speed, you can't deny that.
@Scott Summers Sure it is doable, it just wears your clutch alot more. Don't get me wrong, I love supersports and I would own one if registration and insurance was at a normal price where I live, but i'd be sacrificing alot of comfort. Plate alone is 2000$cad every year here wich is absurd.
@Scott Summers The r6 was my realistic dreambike actually. I hate the fact that I'll have to get a used one now
Dude you have the THE R7? Or at least got to ride it, lucky man. I will probably never even see it in flesh!
We actually have four of them at the moment - the one I rode, two projects, and one that was an ex-BSB race bike:
iconicmotorbikeauctions.com/auction/virgin-mobile-yamaha-r7/
We also sold this one a couple of years ago:

And we've previously sold Damon Buckmaster's R7/R1 racebike:

@@IconicMotorbikes Do you even know how hurt I am with that comment?
There were only 500 ever made and you have four of them? I want in on this business.
Wish they had more colour schemes i like the racing blue but don't like matte fairings as you can't polish them....... Such a shame
Am buying the blue one. I don’t need a fast bike, just a usable bike to have fun around town with. Tired of hearing R6 this R6 that. If you want an R6 then don’t buy this bike there are several options out there.
I agree. How many of these guys use the whole potential R6 has?
This is prolly the most badass “beginner” motorcycle I’ve ever seen ngl
I wouldn't necessarily call this a beginner bike

New Yamaha R7 👌
R7 is $1000 more than Ninja 650 and the same as 4 cylinder Z900.
Meh, like he said. If u want a sport bike on a budget the used market is the way to go. I wouldn't buy a sport bike with an identity crisis.
They should’ve called it the R5 or RT7

This was the best review about R7
I wish it would get launched in India soon ✨❤️
I think maybe an R-9 would have been a slam dunk. That triple MT-09 is bad a$$ (for a Yamaha 😂)
Beautiful bike ... haven't been on a bike in 5 years, and a sports bike in 10. Might be getting one of these ... just wish they had more colors available !
Yeah, that was also my only major complaint. I really wish they did an Ice Fluro version of this. Bike was really fun though.
75hp? very underwhelming... about as much as 2012 ninja 650 with sport exhaust, air filter and ecu (of course miles lighter than that)
KAWASAKI ZX6R is just $1200 more why buy this bike? If you want more comfort then buy the MT09 its literally just $400 more. People will say "oh its for beginner riders on road and on track and cheaper to buy". If that is the case there is the R3 or the Ninja 400!
Yeah the zx6r has been the solution for years. Not one reviewer seems to mention this.
Because marketing ("Oh wow, an R7 should be better than an R6! It looks like an R6 for only 8999!") and nowadays a LOT of people are scared of motorbikes so they won't buy a race replica like the ZX6R, now most of the buyers want a cool looking sporty bike that they can ride comfortably on the street, only 1/1000 will track this bike... I think Yamaha will sell a lot of those
@@MoonlightHusky I think you underestimate how many people track their bikes, especially in the sports bike segment. This bike is a sheep in wolfs cloathing. Perfect for someone who wants to be SEEN. Whichever way you cut it, 9000 is too expensive for this bike.
I would buy because its yamaha..I don't like the look of zx6r its just the same look of zx25r, nj 400, nj650 and etc...and also the electronics are kinda useless in the road that is always traffic and lots of bumpiness and also you cannot utilize the full power..if you know what I mean..and not all has a privilege to have a near by racetrack..
@@bebeKoRider If its brand loyalty thats fine.
Personally i bought a sports bike to enjoy on track and have something which FEELS special on the road. The R6 and ZX6R deliver this because they ARE raw. This looks too tame for proper sports bike riders. The only issue i have is that it replaces the R6 instead of slotting in alongside it.
People are happy to sacrifice performance for usability on the road but the price should drop accordingly.
9 grand for 70hp is too damn high
Well you could go from a r6 to a r1 but you cant go from 75 hp to 200 hp. They would need a middle in between.
Why does it sound like a single cyl bike though? I was hoping that it would sound like the Honda RC51 or at least the MT-07
Have you ever heard a stock MT07? Sounds the same.
