  • Knocked Loose is a hot band lately in the metal scene, but I'm not sure if it's really for me. Knocked Loose ft. Poppy "Suffocate" has some groovy chugs and weird breakdowns, but is it for me?

Your take is how I feel about some of the rock scene currently. Mainly so many bands rn are sounding the same, to the point that if I'm not looking at the radio I couldn't tell you who it is

I get what you are saying about the hooks or riffs on these tunes. I like a very melodic hook myself. But, I understand that it's reactionary content creators like Nik or others that have helped put these bands in the foreground of metal in eyes of the internet. The band does a really odd reggaeton beat before the breakdown and it's different for the genre so people get excited for the reaction from other musicians about it. I personally wouldn't of found out about Spiritbox, SleepToken, or Knocked Loose if it wasn't for some of these content creators though. I like to keep to my simple little world, but I really enjoy those bands. New eyes and ears is almost always a good thing.

They’re a hardcore band in a more late-90’s/early-00’s sense, which is not traditionally an offshoot of metal, despite merging influence from it. Being upset or disappointed that they’re not playing metal how you like it is about the same as being upset or disappointed that they’re not a proper reggaeton outfit. It also doesn’t help that everything “heavy” these days is labeled as some kind of “metal” or “core” when it doesn’t necessarily have much to do with either (in a traditional sense, nothing wrong with breaking new ground). And with modern production “standards”everything is produced to such a fine polish that it can almost sound flat and lack intonation, so you end up hardly able to tell one band from another.
I feel like KL is eschewing these things and just playing what they want, how they want, while the internet scrambles to define them by modern standards that don’t necessarily apply to them, which causes dumb comments like this 🫠
How’s that for old man yelling at clouds?

Yeah that's the thing really, people hear harsh vocals and distorted guitars and think "metal", but hardcore comes from punk, not metal. So it isn't shocking that this wouldn't be up a lot of metalheads' alleys. I love both genres, thankfully.

Best comment in the thread. Genre is kind of a spectrum, not black and white, but if someone put a gun to my head I'd put them in the hardcore box, as in the genre that evolved out of punk (Minor Threat, Bad Brains, etc.) moreso than metal outfits that have evolved from straight up older metal styles over the decades (Sabbath, Death, Maiden etc.) , but metalcore really bled it all together in the last couple decades so you see people equating the two in (in my opinion) slightly unfair ways since they're clearly not trying to be like Opeth or Powerwolf or some shit. But a huge number of people will just use metal as a catchall even though heavy music is much too diverse to be in one box anymore. Thus subgenres and conversations about if band is X Y or Z... Part of me thinks subgenre discussions are useful but the other part of me doesn't give a shit because it's never really cut and dry. All I know is I dig Knocked Loose and the crushing rhythmics of their sound.

@@keiracoven I think the whole thing is made worse by people like Nik Nocturnal who is one of the biggest promoters of new “metal” out there, given that he doesn’t actually know much about a lot of metal or its history (that’s not even elitism, he has videos where his own chat calls him out on it). The mindset these days is “this 8-second part of this one song made me want to mosh so this is now the best band on the planet currently, and moshing = metal”, or they’ll just start making up new subgenres (or recycling old ones they never knew anything about) and labeling bands with whatever they think sounds cool enough, but it ends up wrecking expectations for new listeners…
It seems too many people in the modern “metal/metalcore” space fail to do their homework and generally don’t have much experience with “heavy music” pre-2004 that aren’t slipknot or korn, or your classic metal stuff…but they basically try to act as de facto “scene experts”(how many people love Killswitch Engage but have probably never heard of Overcast?)
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care what people like or don’t like, or even what they call it for the most part if it makes them happy, I just wish people would look beyond the surface of just the “this is the new best band ever of the week” stuff they’re fed here, because knowing the roots is cool and opens you up to a lot more stuff….even moreso if you’re gonna be one of the people acting as an authority on the matter

@@helm_108 Yeah I think Nik's a nice enough guy but he definitely has a habit of labeling everything metal. The other day he was actually confused about the term war metal and thought it meant Sabaton lmao. I think he's well intentioned but I also think it'd be nice to have some of the biggest mouthpieces in modern metal actually know what they're talking about. Maybe then we wouldn't have subgenres that have gotten so muddy like metalcore, where somehow Bad Omens and Converge are considered to be under the same genre lmao.

Did not expect the deep conversation, but I get what you are talking about. Lot of modern metal is not exciting me a lot anymore. Some exceptions-modern Northlane-but generally most stuff on Nik Nocturnal is not as exciting as back in 2020.
You shouldn't feel bad for not liking something, my dad listens to Iron Maiden and Kiss for 40+ years and is happy as can be. Just find what makes you content!

I think I am more inclined to the older bands in the metal scene (90's and 00's bands, rarely 10's bands), but none of the new bands hit the spot for me that bands like bfmv or killswitch engage or even fear factory do. In this case, bands like sleep token and spiritbox or even knocked loose are just eh.

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I’m currently struggling to find new metal bands to get into. The last metal band i was and still am excited about, is Moon Tooth. But almost nobody other than their small fanbase knows about them. A lot of the bands that are popular now are kind of boring to me. There are exceptions, (Spiritbox, Sleep Token) but they are few and far between. As far as this Knocked Loose song is concerned, it’s fine. The reggaeton breakdown is cool, and poppy’s feature was pretty good, but that’s about it. As a KL fan myself, I wasn’t blown away, but was not disappointed either.

Chain does do a bunch of stuff that isn't popular, I've found some banger bands because of it. But obviously you're gonna also play the popular stuff if you're a channel/streamer like him.

Definitely not an old man yells at cloud take. I find there is metal that doesn't hook me a lot nower days. Especially with bands that had good earlier albums but changed their sound later. Very few bands actually write good songs now. But the only positive is people are exposed to metal.

The knocked loose singer is just a toddler who got his iPad taken away and now he's throwing a temper tantrum, I've been listening to metal since I was 4 but maybe I've become a metal boomer
Edit- chain is right, new metal is too far from the roots of what I've grown to love over the years, no hate to y'all who like it

I mean knocked loose is a very hardcorish band even if youd categorize them as metalcore and bryans vocals are alot more typical hardcore vocals that divide opinion then the regular mid tone growls you hear every popular metalcore band use. I get that people dont like it but dont also get the hate, nobody forcing u to listen to it
