I carried a Cold Steel push blade while in the military back in the 80's and then through 22 years of undercover work. My wife sewed the case to the inside of my jeans between the front and rear pocket on the off hand side. Reason being is if someone is fighting for your gun, your off hand is free to grab the knife and also if you are trying to control someone, usually your off hand is going to be more free to get to it. By having just a slit in my jeans (cause the case was inside) meant that it was way less visible. Also, this placed the blade handle below my waistline so that sitting in a vehicle for long periods of time it wasn't digging into my side on my waist because it was lower on the leg. It also allows a draw from sitting without having to drive your elbow up, it's just a quick pull to the rear.

Interesting how people get to different conclusions about the same stuff... I'm a civilian from a third-world country. As guns aren't "allowed" to us, the people, here, knives are somewhat common. Were more when I was young and liked to go around in the less savory places of the town looking for women and drinks... That got me somewhat experienced in knife fighting. Got into about a dozen of them. It was knife vs. knife. Thinking about what I felt I was lacking during the fights (and that almost cost my life sometimes), I got to a *very different* knife design as the ideal one for me: big, long ones, somewhat more specialized in thrusting. With this in mind I got to my 3 ideal models, which since I'm a collector anyways I bought over the Internet: an Arkansas toothpick with a 10" blade, a Gerber Mark II (6.5") and an Indian Karud (13"). Of all of the many scars I have from those fights, NONE came after I had those three. Also for my hands, build and style at least, the Karud proved absolutely superior to any others... (At the time all the martial arts experience I had was a BJJ purple belt)

I carry these daily. They happen to be within the law...and, while i never want to get into a knife fight, I'd prefer a push dagger over a 3" folder. A push dagger makes things easier since you're just going to punch. it's easier to no get disarmed. it's part of my edc along with a good tanto folder and a gun (and a backup gun) .... .....and a unit of bodyguards, 40mms launchers under their M4s. big fan of Craig and also Tom Sotis. I just wish I had as many opportunities to attend Craig's classes as I had with Tom's.
I added one of these to my EDC. I carry a folding knife that I use for all of the daily cutting tasks(opening boxes, cutting fishing line, etc.), but I wanted a dedicated fixed blade for self-defense. Finding knife training around here is tough, but there are boxing gyms abound. I opted for a trainer because after thinking about it good and hard, I realized I wanted a compliance tool to get a guy off me, but I didn't want that level of penetration. I theorize that the increased immediate pain of the trainer will allow me to create space more efficiently and give me the chance to change to a non-lethal(dog spray) or lethal(CCW) option as the situation requires.

First rule of fighting with a push dagger...don't hit bone. I train jabs to the neck, hooks to the arm pit, liver, kidney, and abdomenal/sternum upper cuts with my offhand. I tend to think of my firearm first if I'm not clenched up, and using the blade as a distance tool is something I take from this video that I'll need to work on. I tend to practice with it as a tool when I'm already grappling and can't get to my firearm. More of a 'get off me' than a 'don't come near me' tool. Which is why I mainly go for areas with arteries, so my opponent weakens quickly and can't over power me by extending the fight duration. I carry a cold steel safekeeper II, have for years, at 9:00. I do like the asymmetric design; however, I prefer a thicker handle and rubberized grip in case my hands are wet/slick with blood. I'd love to see this offered with a bit thicker (not wider) palm swell, as I have fairly large hands, and thinner grips tend to not fit very well in my hand. I think the best way to describe it is that they tend to touch my fingers where the grooves are and a single line where it hits my palm, but fails to fill my entire fist and tends to slide because there are only a couple of points of contact, rather than fitting the entire palm. If that makes sense. I guess I could probably wrap the handle, but that is a huge issue I've seen with many push daggers. The thicker grip on the safekeeper II solves the issue completely and I don't get any kind of movement even when I hit something that immediately halts the penetration. I can't be the only one who notices this deficiency in push dagger design. Semper Fi
Well I found the knife for me. I was an amateur boxer for 10 years, never really felt like learning kali or another art to feel really effective with a blade when i have trained so much with my fists and guns.
Just had my buddy ask me about finding a video about "an old man talking about avoiding the fight". You mean like managing unknown contacts? "Yea!" He was talking about one of Craig's videos about MUC. I was like, "man he's not THAT old." LOL

Man that’s a genius design. Great idea with the trainer being a less lethal force multiplier as well. It would definitely tune up an evil soul nicely 👏 John, you and James Yeager are making my wallet hurt.
Great advise guys. I’m a blade smith as well as a martial artist. Earlier in my life I lived and trained in Thailand (Muay Thai)and Cambodia. Learned some great knife skills in Cambodia for sure. Now I’m a sushi chef and get to play with Japanese steel on a daily basis.
I am a police officer. I carry a benchmade push blade at 9 o’clock support side for gun grabs. I also keep a Sig p365 in my left cargo pocket too but I like options
I once saw a T-style dagger concealed as a belt buckle, the whole kit (belt and buckle) was insane. I would love to see this style of concealment in your product line. If you get the clinch pick to conceal the same way; I'll buy both!! By the way I'm a 44 waist (easy on the fat jokes). :-)
Does anyone know why push daggers are made with a traditional blade instead of a triangular or square blade for a stiffer, stronger blade, more penetration and possibly a longer blade?
Look at Bastinelli's "Innocent" push knife. He uses a Wharncliffe style blade. As for the shorter blades, I'd guess it's for a concealable self-defense/last ditch/get the f*ck off me knife.
Thoughts on which blade - this push dagger or the clinch pick...I understand they both are very different but just interested to hear your thoughts around which one you would pick as part of your EDC?
Solid advice which is why I carry my pocket knife on my left side. It’s not natural but gun on right side with right hand draw.. you always need a weapon on the left in. Ass you can’t draw your firearm and still need a force multiplier. Knife goes in front left pocket.. flashlight back left pocket.. so I have two options I can hit with depending on the positioning. A flashlight with a good aggressive bezel can work good enough to break contact and gain distance. Just know if you go with a defensive weapon like this.. you now have two weapons in a clinch you have to prevent from being used against you. It’s why currently I’ve not gone as dare as using a knife like this yet. I prefer a typical folding knife. Main reason is if I’m engaged and prevented or preventing the firearm from being drawn.. the secondary takes two steps to deploy. The reason for this it more warning in a close range physical engagement where the attacker need more time to deploy which in return would give the time to deploy the firearm. Especially since a left hand ore rates gun from attackers side would need a lot of repositioning to open and use.
I like that he brings it back to principles in ju-jitsu and boxing that are relatively easier to find training for around the world. I don’t know of a lot of knife fighting classes in the city I live in, but I train martial arts. So it is useful I can use the same/similar techniques and body position I can practice with live energy, then just do it with a knife if need me. In my mind that is the big advantage of the push dagger. You know how to throw a punch? You can use it.
It is not only that a push dagger utilizes common empty hand skills, it also has better angles and force transfer in clinch/infighting range than standard saber, hammer or icepick grip knives. When you don't have enough space or gravitational assistance to generate fast stabs, you need the heavy weight transfer inherent in the push daggers design. Lay on your back in bed and try to stab something with icepick, Sabre, and push dagger. The penetration results will show you why a pushdagger is so preferable as an anti- grapplers weapon.

I carry the safemaker II from cold steel I prefer the rubber handle to other makers and models
SDI is the shit, another quality commercial from john. No sportsmans guide plug?
Your Kung Fu Panda reference was not lost on me John lol
"sneak attack!!" as John yells it...... Funny stuff!!!
"so tell me how many kills do you have with this knife" 😂
I have a lot of experience with knife fighting I personally carry a push dagger as a secondary but this knife that you have here is amazing
i could see this push dagger being used in john wick
garrett2jz that’s exactly what I was thinking.
John wick 2 ruby rose character
“Lit” is what kids say. “That knife is lit!”
"Fire".
Bruce Leroy na man. We used to say fire. We are 30 now. The kids say some other stupid shit. No cap vibe
These two have some synergy!
Hilarious and educational.
I came across a video with the two of you a few weeks ago and I subscribed immediately. You two are really great together. Great content, thank you.
ATR thanks!!
I have that video. It's excellent. I am not young... LOL.
Love that your doing some good knife content now as well !!! Very well rounded as a warrior should be !! You are awesome !!! 😁👍
*yore
Colonel Blade must have got caught with a picture of his push dagger in California! I laughed so hard when you said that.
I am just thankful to live in Georgia. Gods Country!

What do you do for a living?
@@footbalr074 I was going to work at a gun shop and then maybe open up my own business. But while I was in the middle of getting my degree, I was hired on at the post office and now have a great full time job, retirement and the whole nine yards. So I am doing it on the side right now, and once I get my shop setup I might do a little more.
@@Toolman71492 Did you have to sign any weird NDA agreements about what would happen in the event of a FEMA declared state of emergency or anything like that? I'm asking for a friend
@@jhanks2012 nah, nothing like that.
@@jhanks2012 lol
Now you have a second lady subscriber lol! Great stuff and info, thank you!
Man that’s a genius design. Great idea with the trainer being a less lethal force multiplier as well. It would definitely tune up an evil soul nicely 👏
John, you and James Yeager are making my wallet hurt.
Their dynamic is awesome.
You're welcome to hand over the channel to Craig whenever John, it's been real.
Man, that's some Japanese light novel shit.
Great stuff as usual! Really, really digging the use of the trainer as a less than lethal. Ouch!
This guy would be so fun to train with . The stuff u would learn about your vulnerability would be amazing
"Warrior Poet Woke" needs to be on some merch.
i know this is a year late but john never misses a moment to hug him
I love your hair you keep it so healthy looking
John Lovell uploaded a video, and it's my birthday! So good!
Happy birthday!
@@Prince-fn7ff Thank you!
Demonitized on UA-cam....buys 5 times the gear on Sportsman's Guide. Fuckkkk the algos :-)
Half the video, learning about knife knowledge, other half John sizing up knife wizard
I am a police officer. I carry a benchmade push blade at 9 o’clock support side for gun grabs.
I also keep a Sig p365 in my left cargo pocket too but I like options
Genius idea to use it with off hand!! Love it!
It reminds me of the katar. Very beautiful knife.
Craig is one of my favorite people. Very smart, very funny.
For you obvious height of 7ft 2 giga Chad I'm sure that's a very normal size.
I was waiting for Crocodile Dundee to pop up. "That's not a knife" Pulls out his 3 foot machete. "This is a knife". LOL
The word you were looking for is “lit” or “straight fire” but “straight fire” usually refers to music instead items. Push daggers are lit
keep up the great work sir. we appreciate the vids and tips
I came over from Acts17Apologetics channel. You have great videos.
I would definitely think at least twice before messing with these “old guys”. Pretty sure they could easily wreck me without breaking a sweat.
As I re-watch this video at 6am Saturday...1 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS!!! Nice.👏👏👏👏🇺🇲👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍🇺🇲
John "not a douchebag" Lovell bringing forward some big guns; or knives as it were.
Common man obviously "head shakes horizontally back and forth"
I'm sold. I really like that knife design. It just makes more sense to me personally. Thanks for the lesson guys. Cheers from Texas.
Never been this early! But woo I'm almost done watch all the backlog! Keep up the work and as always train hard train smart 💪👊
Yay for that.
5:11 good old John , hurting people physically and mentally
How do you not love these guys?
Excellent Master Shifu reference 🤣 John Lovell... the Babe Ruth of dad jokes.
Making me think I have broken headphones cmon man!
Same. I spent the first minute or so trying to figure out if I had a short.
