Home made wall mounted 19-inch server / data / equipment rack cabinet. Perfect for a home network!

- Rather than buying a pre-made wall mount server data cabinet I decided to build one myself, custom designing it to fit a standard 19-inch network switch, power strip, patch panel, NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive, wireless WiFi access point, fibre broadband modem and the Hive central heating panel.
The unit itself is easy to make out of timber, I show you how I made it from a simple kitchen wall cabinet but alter it to fit the rack perfectly. It looks good on the wall (it looks much nicer than a metal data rack cabinet) and can be altered in the future if I feel the need to expand the unit.
The costs for a pre-built metal unit of this size is around £135.00, this one I have built cost just £39.00 - that's a huge saving!
Rack contents include (I am not sponsored):
- TP Link TL-SG1024 Unmanaged 24-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch - Amazon
- LMS Data 6-gang Horizontal Power Distribution Unit (PDU) - Amazon
- Western Digital (WD) MyCloud EX2 Ultra NAS server - Maplin (before they went bust!)
- BT Smart Hub 2 - Gigabit Router and WiFi Access Point with 802.11ac Wireless
- Hive HomeHub - Central Heating / Water Control Panel with Remote Access
- OpenReach - Fibre-to-the-home Modem with 900 mbps connection

that's a GIGANTIC case... for ONE switch... must admit I actually expected "something" in the rack...yes yes there are the stuff on the shelf below but that obviously didn't need a rack.
@5:55 talking about back-heavy, screwing in top screw first, of course. Tip: screwing in bottom ones first will force the rack-ears to the rails and hold them instead of trying to sheer off, friction is your friend! So is the principle of lever.
Rack looks really nice with the colour accents, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Sko!
I’ve from Bradford , ever year I go to Cumbria for a week. Has soon has I leave Keighley I’m in a different world. Then a week later driving through Keighley towards Bradford I’m back in driving hell !
Very good job! Suggestion: add labels to cables and power supply units
It was a little flimsier than I expected. I had to add a 2x2 piece of wood to the bottom on the rear side in order to stabilize it better ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXTh-lz-8W6GcB219vTLp27-MxbZYObBX . It is also starting to bow a little at the outer wall ( I've had it up for about 6 months), I've already had a shelf tumble down because of the bow and the fact that the little shelf brackets are quite short. I went out to home depot and got some longer ones so that the shelves don't tumble down again. Overall, it looks very nice for the price and it holds a lot ( I use it as a pantry). I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just strongly suggest reinforcing it before putting it up.
Being a techy It's nice mate, visually looks great.
Cheers for that!
Nice work, appreciating it here from Jersey, New Jersey, USA.
Cheers Ben! Hope that Jersey is doing well, we have friends who've just moved there.
Well done, Your accent kept my full attention
Damn, thought it was a server rack build but well done.
Great video. I was looking for an idea to make my media room rack. Thanks!
Thanks Stan, glad you liked it!
I think I would have added some rack mount fans.
The only thing missing is actually heat exhaust. You have just one or two switch so not the biggest heat output but I wouldn't do that with servers and big switch, need room for air in front and back
Thanks, agreed, I would stick a fan in too of I had something more heavy dity in there.
Super fiitting & your equipment 👌
Thanks SN! Please do subscribe as I'll be uploading part 2 soon...
Nice, just built something similar for my home network using scrap lumber from previous projects.
Thanks for watching! Please do subscribe as I'll be uploading the next chapter in a few weeks.
This looks great. When do you think the sequel will come out?
Hi Max, thanks so much. Hoping yo get the next one out in July. Big job networking the whole house...!
Did you move the ONT, or did they install to that corner?
What are the measurements of the whole rack?
Can you do an update on your home server please
wow really cool idea ! Nice rack :-D I was lucky got 2nd hand one for £40 from Facbook market place :-) I do look forward to your next video !
How did you fix the Hive Hub and and BT Hub to the red accent panel? My hubs do not have any slot mounts for screws.
I've used some ultra sticky foam pads. They've not fallen off yet!
@@diyace How's is the network install going in the home? I'm currently doing a very similar setup with a home network installation. Any plans for an update video?
do you have a link for the rack (the silver, into which you screw the components) rails.

@@diyace awesome thanks, hmmm, wonder if there is a 12u kit, let me go diggg.
I need a 1000mm deep rack
Servers don't fit in such a short cabinet
Yeah, I had thought of building something deeper but for a NAS media/document server this one fits perfectly. I'll be building a full server setup in the new extension to the house next year, for my business to be based at home. Subscribe as I'll be putting that up on here too!
Came here because my wife won’t let me leave the server rack exposed in the living room
By the way, mill is not the same as a millimeter. 1 mill is 1/1000th of an inch.
Depends on where you are. A mill is short for a millimeter, where as a thousandth of an inch is a thou.
Hi from Australia.
@@gorillaau Thanks! I was thinking about mil specifically, i.e. excluding mill, but after your comment, I decided to look it up. Apparently, both spellings refer to the same thing, and it's in-fact only in some countries being used as I thought. Further more, it's apparently not strictly a thousand of an inch, but a thousand of the base unit.
P.S. Hi from Bulgaria! I am guessing the whole mil thing is not even a thing here since we don't use English.
Wooden box! 🤦
😂😂😂😂 you did not save £85 .. you lost a lot of time doing this
BUT look’s good
