I decided to made this tutorial when i visited a friend of mine.
He likes all tech stuff and he is always adding new things!
But as you will see in this video he never has time to tidy things up.
So to help him i turn his mesh installation into a neat installation!
So by watching this tutorial you will learn how to make your own Rack Installation from scratch!!! 😎

The steps i followed in this tutorial are :
1) Clear the initial mesh!
2) Use a floor cable channel for the cables
3) Bandle the cables all together using cable ties
4) Terminate the cables using Panduit's Muni Com Jack Modules
5) Preparing the floor standing Rack

This was quite informative and easy to follow along. That said I had a moment with the reasoning of the separate ISP connection. That was until I realized the connection that was on the patch panel was from the equipment the ISP provider had to put in first. Then the patch cable to the modem. It's good that DSL is that fast where you are. Here in the states DSL came and went. They never pushed it as much as they could because of what else but cost. Thankfully i'm in an area with fiber to the home. So when they came in I have their equipment to the router I use. Again thank you this will be useful when I set up my new home.

Some suggestions:
1) Strain relief bar behind the patch panel.
2) Shorter patch cables - have longer ones near by if need be. Unlikely for a home user to critically redesign the rack.
3) Don't use cable ties. If you must, then use velcro under it.
4) Use patch cables with colour to easily ID cables. IE red = WAN ; yellow = PoE ; green = Voip ; blue = x ; purple = y etc
5) Use black patch panels with inline coupler type keystones. Makes installation much faster & maintenance/troubleshooting is easier.
6) Service loop & resulting cable should be to the side, out of the way of deeper devices, which could damage the cable.
7) Label power plugs.

And use the proper tool for cutting cable ties. Why does NO ONE ever use a proper tool? Flush cut cable ties are a series of sharp knives waiting to open someone's arms. The proper tool pulls the tie then cuts it so that the cut end ends up BELOW the surface

The panel that you hammered out could have been neatly removed using your flush mount cutters. It would have saved the risk of damaging or wrapping the opening and ensured a clean opening without the sprues that were left by hammering out the panel.
Nice job. I love the Panduit Mini-Com system. You can use Panduit's blanks to fill in the open ports in the patch panel. I would have put the Dream Machine on top of the cabinet so that the cabinet doesn't interfere with the Wifi RF signal though. You could drill a hole in the top of the cabinet and put a grommet to protect the wires passing through.
Thank you for your comment! Do you have a link for Panduit’s blanks? I left the dream machine inside the rack because the access point covers only the office with the rack. The other rooms have their own access points.

I also like the Panduit patch panels that have the removable sections of 4 jacks because it means that you can remove the jacks from the front of the rack without needing access to the rear. This has come in very handy! I reserve one section of 4 for each wall jack in my house. This makes it easy to locate the correct jack on the panel. Good video, nice set up. I might look in to getting a proper rack system soon rather than my self made one after watching this.
I believe that it's not worth it to build one from the scratch. It is not so expensive to buy one.
Main critique is using those zip ties. Never use zip, always go for velcro. This way you've easier expandability in the future and it makes redoing wiring easier than having to try and cut zips, especially if some person makes them super tight.

I use zip ties. I think they look cleaner, and as long as you're not moving your stuff around all the time, it's cheap to buy more when you need them. :)
@@richthegecko5995 Im telco. Im not allowed to use zip ties for several good reasons. So out of that I dont use them at home either. Its either velcro or "sewn" in with a waxed 9ply cord. lol
Or use reclose able zip ties that can be released and reclosed.

Hooking that Dream Machine to a DSL line has got to hurt.
I had the same though. The traffic locally will be superb, I am not sure what would be the max speed on DSL? 10Mbps? I have the USG + USW8 + 2 AC AP Pros + 2x RPi4.
in greece 100 meg DSL is common. a large portion of the united states only has dsl, and its 10 meg. so... theres that.
400megs are possible... But mostly it's not even close to it
But this cat5 cables are also limiting the speed in the house^^

This was a nice install I would have preferred velcro straps instead of cable ties I makes it easier to add or remove cables at a later date if needed.

For SOHO will fit. In other cases Rack UPS (you have space for it) and PDU. Wires going to the patch panel should be placed in the corners of the cabinet.

But I have a question, you use the Ubiquiti US-16-150W Networks Networks UniFi Switch, 16 Port, but can another switch be used?
Of course! You can use any switch that covers your needs.

the brush 10:38 with which you pass the cables in the lower part of the rack cabinet, where can you buy it? Thank you
The brush was included with the Rack! I will search and if i find one i will post it!
TBH using the brush with all that sharp metal after removing the knockout panel, is not going to protect the cables. I prefer to use an edge protector, similar to that found on car doors.
look on ebay for it. it is very cheap to buy.
How did you terminate cables from ISP to the keystone when its DSL? And what keystone did you use? Isnt DSL only RJ11? Never saw keystone for DSL. Did you use RJ45 to RJ11 cable?
I used the same keystones. For DSL you only need wires 4 and 5 (Blue/White-Blue). For the connection i used telephone cable (4-wires) but i terminated the end that goes to keystone with RJ45 connector instead of RJ11 connector.
wonder if i have missed the server rack part. What is the dimensions (length width height) of the rack, does it need wheels or fans? are there screws at the back of rack to help carry the weight of 24-port switch? or the 4 front screws are strong enough?
The dimensions of the rack are : 758x600x600 mm (15U), I didn't order wheels or fans for this rack. The rack is inside a house so I wanted to avoid noise. There aren't any Racks at the back of the Rack. The 4 Front screws are strong enough!
Nice job on the new setup, looks great! Thats a lot of connections for just one LAN though. I'm curious if you split the network onto separate VLANs?
All these cables are for the Access Points and Cameras and indeed i have created 1 vlan, for a guest network.

Nice look and video however, putting the dream machine into a metal container like such, if the access point is set, will affect wireless greatly and might damage the radio chip inside due to RF

Great video :) may I ask where you got the brush strip that slots onto the cut out section of the rack, so that cables can pass through it? Most of the ones I see are meant to be attached to the front with cage nuts.
We didn't buy the brush separately. It was included with the Rack.

Also, pickups occur in low-current wires, which in one way or another affects the operation of network equipment. Use an oscilloscope. Maybe in such a small cabinet this is not so critical, but I have witnessed very big problems due to the fact that someone twisted the wire going from the power adapter to the device (5v) into a coil.

i have a question,
why you didn't crimp cables with rj45 and plug it directly to the switch , why you used the minicom zac module to cables and patch panel zac mont and patch cables to the switch, waist of money and performance
It is recommended to use a Patch Panel for terminating utp cables for the purpose of neat and tidy cable management.
The back panel you hammerd out where you tread all the cabels true you forgot that there was sharp edges the Cable can be ruin on if it is cables are moved often even so you should put something there you can even cut your hand or fingers there,,,

UDM is a proprietary piece of equipment that literally manages your network. you can create VLAN's and such and use Ubiquiti kit from one interface (and that is an oversimplification)

Is your friend not using built in AP of UDM? AP inside metal case doesn't seem like a good idea.
I know, but since every room has it's own AP and the WiFi signal is great i decide it to sucrifice the UniFi Dream Machine inside the rack in order the installation to look neat.

Σε ευχαριστούμε για το σχόλιο. Σο SpeedPort χρησιμοποιώ PPPoE Pass Through το οποίο από default είναι ενεργοποιημένο στα Speedport οπότε δε χρειάζονται επιπλέον ρυθμίσεις. Απλά συνδέεις την πόρτα 1 ή 2 ή 3 του Speedport στη θύρα WAN του Dream Machine και επιλέγεις από το IPv4 Connection του UniFi Controller, PPPoE και δίνεις το user name και password της γραμμής σου.

I see you plugged the surge protector into the UPS. Is this generally a bad idea? I've been told that it may mess up the UPS... I ask because I have a surge protector that I like, and am considering a UPS but still want to use the surge protector I have.
I prefer the surge protector to be after the UPS in order to have the devices protected. So far everything seems to work fine!
@@PoseidwnTech there is no specific reason why you can't use a surge protector extension socket AFTER the UPS. But there is a doubt that it would do any good as the UPS is already providing that safety factor, built in to it. So in effect doing it twice... and the chances of getting a "surge" or "brown-out" from a UPS is so small, as to be improbable.

It is not a hack. I used the same cable for the ISP and Telephone. One pair for each.

I chose the UniFi Dream Machine as the main router because it comes in an attractive price including Router, Cloud Key, Access Point and Switch. I wanted all the main network equipments(patch panel, switch, router and modem) to be inside the Rack in order to have a neat installation. I have installed 1 Access Point in every room so the WiFi Coverage was great even without the onboard access point of Dream Machine.

WiFI inside of metal rack?
I wanted all the network devices to be inside the Rack, so that's why i put also the Dream Machine inside. Every room in the house has 1 Access Point so the WiFi Coverage is great and without the onboard access point of Dream Machine. But you are right in any other case the Access Points cannot be installed inside a metal Rack.

would have turned that apc strip and battery backup 90 degrees now you cant see the status of the ups. next i would have laid down the mode and dream machine to make it more compact.

Why would you put a WiFi device inside a Faraday cage? You should place the wireless access point outside the cabinet.
Every room in the house has it's own Access Point, so the WiFi coverage is great and i could afford to sacrifice the Dream Machine's one. I also i prefer to put the network components inside the Rack.

Yes the blue cable is UTP Cat6.
