Unless the ISP modem has mGig ports it wouldn’t make a difference. The modem ports and WAN bandwidth will be the bottleneck to 1Gbps. Connections to local services like the NAS will be via the switch so the only way to get >1Gbps to those services is to upgrade the switch to mGig. The only traffic which will get >1Gbps is what’s only travelling over Wi-Fi (ac or ax) and there aren’t many real life situations when this would happen.
Great setup! You need a UPS! It’ll save you in the event of a power outage. You don’t even need a rack-mount one. Connect the USB to the Synology for a safe shutdown if power goes out for too long
I don't have fiber yet. I should have it soon as it's currently being installed in my area (not ATT though). I can't wait. I expect the Orbi to be amazing once I get fiber, as it's already doing so well with my 400 mbps/20 mbps caps.

Thank you for sharing. How you manage switching wifi hubs without loosing the connection to your smart home devices? Can I guess using the same SSID? Please share. Thanking you in advance!
Yes, I use the same SSID name and pw on the new router. Everything should connect automatically. Some devices did require a power cycle to get them to connect but everything went (surprisingly) smooth…especially with so many devices.
What’s the wall box where all the wires are coming out of? I’m new to the smart home set up and trying to do it right. Is there another router outside of the Orbi WiFi mesh router that you recommend because those prices are high.
Question? Should all the hubs be together like that? Interference or none responsive in HomeKit and more importantly, the main orbit router (also in a closed closet) Do it affect the wireless 6E signal specifically in a closed location like that in such a big house?
I saw that you were enthusiastic about the Thinka, (I just don't understand how you use it in America because the frequency is different there) What I'm curious about, and I may have already asked something similar about other tubes of yours: If you have an outlet that not only switches, but can also measure current, does it also work in Apple Home (or of course Homedash or the like)?
Any chance you can do a review showing us the Orbi software and features, like how to set up the ioT and guest network and overall network management. I have the old RBK 50 Orbi mesh and am curious about this update system
That’s very interesting and useful for me. I have been thinking about organizing my Smart Home better. Because I think it will help me expand more easily. Thanks, Shane.
Cool setup, only problem I see is there’s to many hubs. We either need 1 hub to control any HomeKit device or stick with hub less devices and Apple TV. I have solar panels on my house so we watch our kWh used and tho it’s not necessary to watch our electricity use because we produce more than we use it helps us in the long run.

Did you have any issues connecting your Aqara hub to the Orbi router? I have an older Orbi mesh router and was not able to connect an Aqara hub, since the Orbi app doesn’t support splitting the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz bands.
This was sort of my question I just posted to Shane too. Right now though I have my hubs (all but my Arlo hub) in my basement and everything connects and works fine….
Question: all those hubs are just to connect your equipment to homekit? Did you really need all of them or is that just a good practice to have one hub for each kind/brand of equipment?
Cable internet is still the main internet connection in most of the USA probably followed by DSL. fiber internet is very slowly creeping up across towns and cities. I mean, in my town in northern California, our main providers are AT&T and Comcast. Neither of them appear to be interested in installing fiber in our neighborhood. AT&T has fiber in a few neighborhoods around town, but they don't' seem to care about expanding that much.

It's pretty insane tbh. I tested that out when I first installed it. Using the new Orbi WiFi6E, with a WIRELESS backhaul, I still got faster speeds than my previous router, with a WIRED backhaul. That was a bit shocking. Incredible performance. Download speeds over 470 mbps (I pay for 400 mbps download speeds from ISP).
@@ShaneCreates oh man I’m so on the verge of getting that. Been looking to replace my older Eeros that I’m using Ethernet backhaul on. I’ll use your link for sure if I do.
Why do you have eufy and reolink both as your security cameras. Which one would you recommend? (I know its not apples to apples comparison but you're first smart home youtuber to be using both)
I think at the time of recording I hadn't installed reelink cameras yet. Maybe I was just testing them or about to install them. I always prefer PoE whenever possible. Eufy is good if you need wireless, but if you can do hard-wired cameras, that is always preferred. I ended up replacing all of my exterior cameras with wired PoE cameras.
Thanks for watching! It really depends on what you are using. In theory, HomeKit runs locally so all your smart home automations, etc should still be able to run even without wifi.
You have a raspberry pi. Why not install homeassistant then you could get rid of some hubs. You could also mount some of the small white hubs vertically or on a board then you could get the modem on that shelf which will free up the top for the nas
Sorry for being kind of a downer here.... but I like your videos. This rack is a let down. I just wish you had put in a bit more time into the cable management and making them all the same type of cables, do some labels.... fit everything into the one rack.... but glad to see you got it all fixed up. Def. an improvement over what you had! Get yourself some Unifi patch cables, or similar. Glad to see you hardwired the satellite. I feel a lot of people rely on the mesh networks... I can't stand the buzz word 'mesh' has become. I am running Unifi APs and Protect for cameras, hardwired the home.... so I have a bit of a chip about mesh wifi's. Looking forward to seeing more of our videos. Thanks for opening your home to us!
Thanks for the support and appreciate the comment. I am no network engineer. This is certainly a work in progress and I'll continue to work on it and improve it over time, so suggestions are welcome. Just wanted to share my experience with others. While Unify APs, and hard-wired everything is amazing, it's probably a little much for your average person. I think that's where mesh wifi systems come in. They have gotten so good and make it extremely simple for your average person to setup. That's why I recommend them to people who are getting into building a smart home.
Great setup Shane, thanks for sharing your video. I’m fixing to do exactly what you’ve done with your network devices. So it’s okay to have all your hubs in one central location as when connected via the switch the router then carries the WiFi signals to all the devices (Lutron switches, my Arlo Pro cameras, etc)? I am going to setup my rack in my basement and run Ethernet from my main router on the main floor to the rack…..
Awesome video. Thanks for making this! What bracket extensions did you use to lint your TP link ether net switch to the rack? Did it come with the switch.
As long as you don’t plug in a loop, it’s good. Many larger companies use multiple switches. Also, many smart switches support Spanning Tree Protocol, which can detect (and block) a broadcast storm.
I’ve seen people use STP as a way of redundancy. Purposely cause a STP block with two connections. If one cable is disconnected, the other will take over
Very awesome setup! I’ve had Orbi systems for 10 years and love them. I just got the RBK852, thing I learned from your video is you can setup a separate ssid for smart home devices. Can you send instructions to me?
Looks great! Why no UPS though? My wife works from home and by putting a UPS on the modem and router, I can keep the internet running for about 2 hours.
Thanks Dustin! No, I primarily use the Aqara M1S as my hub. Which, as you know, plugs into an outlet elsewhere. It works great for me over wifi and I like using the light on it.
@@ShaneCreates if I’m being honest, I haven’t noticed any performance improvements using the M2 wirelessly versus wired. It’s all super solid. The M1S is a beast. I have two of them and use their lights as indicators for sensor and device states that are placed in that area of the house. Great little subtle reminder.
11:53 Took me a second to figure out what he was saying to use that for, then realized this here was pure gold. What an idea.

I can't believe that nobody has commented about the rack being hung out from the drywall using those toggle bolts, with no studs or other reinforcement. Eufy is good if you need wireless, but if you can do hard-wired cameras, that is always preferred. I ended up replacing all of my exterior cameras with wired PoE cameras.
Did you run normal CAT5 cable for you internet set up or did you go with CAT6?
Great setup. Is the bracket holding the switch to the rack included in the switch or sold separately?
I believe it came with a few cage nuts. The rack also came with some.
What dashboard are you running on the wall mounted iPad?
I used Viz Designer to create my custom dashboard for homekit: ua-cam.com/video/F5xCMwGQig8/v-deo.html
You can configure the synology to come back up after a power outage automatically when the power is restored, without a UPS
Very cool video!
I always asking myself what will be with whole smart home if your provider internet connection will be interrupted?!:/
Thanks for watching! It really depends on what you are using. In theory, HomeKit runs locally so all your smart home automations, etc should still be able to run even without wifi.
Hubs & Hangers! 😄
It was bad… I know 😂
I like your setup I was wondering what modern are you using
You have a raspberry pi. Why not install homeassistant then you could get rid of some hubs. You could also mount some of the small white hubs vertically or on a board then you could get the modem on that shelf which will free up the top for the nas
Link for the hexagon light next to the air purifier?
Hi Shane, can I get a Trubolt orion lock to work with homekit? its wifi
Thanks Brian. Not sure I understand the questions exactly. As long as your hubs still have a good connection to the child devices you should be fine.
Do you use like 10 apps to control your smart home besides automations?
No, pretty much just use the Apple Home app for everything.
Why do you have a nvr and a nas? Seems redundant
Awesome video. Thanks for making this! What bracket extensions did you use to lint your TP link ether net switch to the rack? Did it come with the switch.
Hey Mark, thanks for watching. Yes it's a rack mountable ethernet switch so it included everything.
Do you have an increased risk of encountering broadcast storm issues when using two switches (if you use your old 8-port switch)?
As long as you don’t plug in a loop, it’s good. Many larger companies use multiple switches. Also, many smart switches support Spanning Tree Protocol, which can detect (and block) a broadcast storm.
I’ve seen people use STP as a way of redundancy. Purposely cause a STP block with two connections. If one cable is disconnected, the other will take over
Very awesome setup! I’ve had Orbi systems for 10 years and love them. I just got the RBK852, thing I learned from your video is you can setup a separate ssid for smart home devices. Can you send instructions to me?
Thanks John! I believe the separate IoT ssid is is a new addition to the Orbi 6E systems.
@@ShaneCreates ah ok thank you
Looks great! Why no UPS though? My wife works from home and by putting a UPS on the modem and router, I can keep the internet running for about 2 hours.
Thanks. It's mentioned in the video... it's on my list of things to add. Still a "work in progress."
@@ShaneCreates I must have missed that part.
Awesome video. High key jealous
Thanks for watching!
When I first started I could import samples but now everti I do so it just gives the soft 1. I want to cut, stretch and edit the
How did you get a thinka z-wave? I have been looking for a z-wave option!
The company sent me one for testing so I could share it on UA-cam. Hoping they will release in the US soon.
Which Homekit cameras performed better? Reolink or Eufy? Is POE still the best route for hksv? 🤔
Thanks for watching!
Dude! What a sweet set up! But… Are you not running your Acara system hardwired with the hub M2?
Thanks Dustin! No, I primarily use the Aqara M1S as my hub. Which, as you know, plugs into an outlet elsewhere. It works great for me over wifi and I like using the light on it.
@@ShaneCreates if I’m being honest, I haven’t noticed any performance improvements using the M2 wirelessly versus wired. It’s all super solid. The M1S is a beast. I have two of them and use their lights as indicators for sensor and device states that are placed in that area of the house. Great little subtle reminder.
