I will never forget the Caltrain F40PH’s and the Gallery cars. The best Memories of the old Caltrain fleet. Have a happy Retirement, Old Caltrain fleet!! 😢🥹😭
I saw that Caltrain Gallery Cars will be put near Warm Springs Bart Station. I noticed this because I saw it on April 20, 2024 (Bart's Old Fleet Last Day).
When the other ones following these are out of here soon, it will fully be the end of an era for Caltrain. I just didn't know at first the Gallery coaches were rather bouncy.
Pretty sure Metra is working with Alstom to make some new Coradia Bi-Levels for their system to replace their gallery cars so they'll probably not buy any unless they need temporary replacement cars
Metra’s new Alstom stock will not start showing up until next summer and that’s the optimistic outlook. They are a new design and they’re running late (vis-a-vis Acela deux). Under the best of circumstances it will take Metra until the end of the decade to integrate the new cars into service. That said, it would be a good idea to buy or lease the newest of the now unemployed Caltrain cars to sideline the oldest of their bilevels IF that can save some maintenance money.
@@Decopunk1927 Indeed. 63 of the Caltrain gallery cars were built in 1985 with 30 more coming in 2000. That makes them newer than the vast majority of Metra’s fleet. Caltrain has gone with new multilevel stock from Stadler, Metra will (eventually) be getting multilevel coaches from Alstom with VRE expected to follow suit thereafter. The age of the gallery car may be drawing to a close.
I heard the rumor going around, but I’m not positive that the cars are being stored either in Roseville or Petaluma pending disposition, I don’t know if Caltrain still owns the equipment, but that’s what I heard going around circulating. Maybe someone can verify that.

Nope, not with that disastrous half second floor, high platform boarding and stairs. This would also be a logistical nightmare as the gangways for these cars are on the bottom level whereas the superliner gangways are at the top. There are transition cars but to assemble a consist with these would be dreadful.
It would be better to use these cars for commuter services like in Texas, between Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, or towards Arizona for cities of Phoenix and Tucson, or areas that need commuter rail services.
Engineer should have gone way slower and the little white car pacing the train should have a much much louder “back up” signal. And then filming in its entirety the whole move at 1mph. Must be former Newport ship builders😂
Really doesn’t look bad with the UP unit on the point! Think of how many commuters that train could move in one trip❤
That is a really nice retirement train.🚂🚃🚃🇺🇲
I agree
I heard about this happening, glad you caught it for the rest of us to see.

Metra would certainly like to get their hands on these

This locomotive was also built by GE, so its not too surprising.
where are gallery cars heading to?
Where these going?

I’m guessing these cars are either going in storage for the time or will be scrapped?
It will eventually happen to Metra
How do you know when these happen?

Those passenger car still looks good seems a waste to be honest
I think those cars could be modified and upgraded. Then used on Amtrak long distance routes.
