Hello, fella Mass. resident here. I'm planning to do a full de-thatching, aeration, overseed/starter fert in a few weeks on my 1.5 acre property, the catch is I don't have irrigation. I've copied your sprinkler design and plan on making a few more. My question is, what is more harmful once I overseed, not watering at all, or walking on the lawn to move the sprinklers around?
I recommend watering if there are stretches (more than 3 days) without water, but otherwise leave it be. Especially in the first week of germination. Fortunately it looks like we are getting into a cooler pattern with showers and storms a couple days each week. Light traffic shouldnt do any long term damage to new germination once it is over an inch or so, so moving a sprinkler around would be okay (prior to initial germination, and 2 weeks after initial germination.)
PA LAWN GUY> Great video. It would have been best to remind people that a very sharp blade is best to minimize the amount of pulling out of the shallow rooted plants at the first mowing. Tests have shown, a dull blade will usually pull out approximately one third of the new seedlings.
Nice project. As I watch more and more of your videos I get to see more areas of your property. It is beautiful scenery, plus you get to use all the fun tools and power equipment. Thanks for sharing and the advice. 😄
Hands down best lawn channel. What's up with all Lesco seeds being out of stock? Maybe I will give this a shot with black beauty ultra. Will be happy with 50% germination
That is very kind of you to say. I have to say Lesco stuff is very good but I have moved to Black Beauty because it is so much more available. Lesco should sell through retailers but they don't and it makes it tough to get,
@@SilverCymbal Indeed it looks like it's tough to find Lesco. I'm giving Black Beauty Deep Shade a try, as it's says it's draught tolerant. I live in Northern NJ, and I have a part of my lawn thats too far to water, I refuse to pay for irrigation, and it's really shady. I think I'd need to apply that Tenacity a week or so before the seeding?
Did you start the tenacity in early August? I'm in Massachusetts as well and my backyard has no irrigation and I'm going to follow your lead here in a week or two. I know you seeded in Sept but I want to make sure I time the tenacity correctly.
Outstanding this a keeper I just got a new place and weeds R us is my description, flower beds has vines and plants everything has Africa thorns and spike. I really will pay the price dealing with those. With this video there is hope thanks for a great share!!!!

I just missed areas when I did it but I think the effectiveness of Tenacity is a real game changer, it certainly has been for me.
Thank you so much for this as I live in the country and am on a well so cant water. My lawn looks just like yours did. However, on top of that, we had a bug that chewed up most of my lawn and left it even worse. I live in Canada so not sure if I can get the products you used I haven't researched it yet as just watched the video. but oh boy this gives me hope. I have wanted to aerate my lawn but the ones we have here don't seem to be so easy to use as the one you had. When did you do the weeding? and how long after that the aerating? Just so I know when to start the process.
My lawn is brown right now. Can I use the green lawn paint I see online to make it temporarily look better ? No pets or kids. Will it damage the lawn? Is it flammable? Best lawn paint to use?
The seedlings will still get moisture from dew and the cooler temps should have and did keep the grass from dying. I thought a starter fertilizer was something like a 10-6-4 or a 10-10-10.
Great points, the fertilizers vary, this was the Lesco varies that is a little higher potency but you can certainly use lesser powered ones as well. Thank you for watching and the great tips.
I don't use irrigation either and always have the nicest darkest carpet-like grass in the neighborhood, also here in the Northeast even in the sunniest hottest days of summer. I use Fairview's grass seed, in my case the sunny mixture. I don't like mixes that are only fescues. They tend to get floppy unless mowed constantly and very low, and they don't have that dark green carpet look that we all want. I mow high to suppress weeds and I use the same starter fertilizer but be really careful not to use more than once every 4 months or you can burn your lawn. I also treat with gypsum which makes the ground much softer and germination more likely. Then I treat every so often with a little iron and humic acid. I never use milorganite, as I kind of find that disgusting to have my kids running around on that. The grass stays so nice with the starter fertilizer months later anyway, that it isn't necessary. I do leave my grass clippings behind though which is probably supplying it with additional nitrogen. Weeds will try to make a comeback despite all this, and you need to walk around daily just grabbing a weed here and there to save yourself a lot of work further down the line.
Id love to see this area now silver. Also curious how you came to this handle name? ZXT titanium drummer maybe? Not a fan of the sound myself for my kit but beautiful cymbals.

I am curious how this grass reacts in the NE summers. I plan on trying this method in September along with power raking as I mulch every third cut.
My issue is that I have two different spreaders with no idea what the numbers on dial mean. I tried searching on the inter-web for each product to no avail. Everyone seems to give different settings. What did you use to overseed the lawn/lime the lawn, etc.?
Hi. Beautiful lawn. I live in Texas, my parent's lawn is 100% covered with all sorts and variety of different weeds, we don't have sprinkler system for 5 yrs now, so we barely use any water. I want to treat this product into the lawn, but I was wondering if is safe for pets. My furchild eats grass for his digestive system. Thanks for the information video. Have a bless wk!
Tenacity is rated to be safe for pets after it's applied and dries fully. BUT if you know your pup is eating a lot of grass it still may not be the best idea. The kill window for weeds is only about 2-3 weeks so after they die off the area should be even better for animals so keeping him out for a while might be the best option. Hope this helps.
Having a hard time finding the lesco teammate plus grass seed, I live in the Detroit Michigan suburban area can you recommend any place..? Couldn't find it on Amazon

And also, if I put down winter fertilizer & use the Tenacity & seed in the early spring (april in PA), will I be mowing like crzy if I put down starter fertilizer then as well? Thank you in advance for replying.
Hi SC. Just wanted to chime in at approximately ten months post renovation seeing how the non-irrigation lawn has progressed, especially during this critical point in time of the summer season. Has it held up with minor turf injury or has it gone south? Are the trees helping shade areas that are surviving versus areas of full sun? Like what you're doing. Keep it real. ~ Mike
Actually let me get some pictures tonight. We have had a brutal summer but overall it has done well pus considering there have been almost no rain for weeks too. Check my instagram
@@SilverCymbal Like what I see. The summer season's coming down the home stretch and I would say this has become a successful renovation project. When the the temps come down along with a fall feeding, the lawn should green up nicely. Put a feather in your hat. Nice job. ~ Mike
Sure, if you take a look on my instagram I posted a picture maybe a week or two ago. This has been an absolutely terrible season here in Mass and it's not perfect but considering I have spent no money or time on watering it looks pretty great. I am so pleased that I did this.
Thank you very much I am very pleased with how this turned out considering my lawn looked like an ugly dump there for 7 years before doing this. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
I asked a question about spraying the entire lawn you answered greatly, however I have more questions should I mow first or spot spray then mow and how long after spraying before aerating. Fyi I also purchased all the products, Tenacity etc.
not sure if youve done it yet, but spray first, wait 3 days, mow short, aerate/seed/fert and lime. honestly you can spray at the time of seeding as well, so order doesnt matter so much. You'll get better aeration results by mowing first though.
The amazing news with Tenacity is that you don’t have to wait at all, the seed can go down before during or after, it has no effect on seed at all. Truly a remarkable product for weed control and different than any other. Everything you need to be weed free: Tenacity Weed Control: amzn.to/2JM4APm - Surfactant: amzn.to/2Xz6dod - Dye/Colorant: amzn.to/2Jta4yh 2 Gallon Sprayer: amzn.to/2xBJP3k
Great video, I following steps you suggested, I hope I able to get similar results, as my yard is about 2 acres is kind of hard to water all of it. fingers crossed, Thanks again.
How long after u spray tenacity can you aerate and overseed? Also after overseeding should I put the the starter fertilizer down then put peat moss down over it? Any help would be appreciated. I'm gonna try to do this myself, I'm tired of this grass care companies that don't give a damn
Thank you for this video. I am in MA and have checked the siteone. That particular lesco seed you recommend is not available (Milford). What would you recommend as an alternative- some other kind of lesco vs Jonathan green ultra if I want to try this no water method? My main challenge is lack of irrigation and goal is an ok looking low maintenance lawn.
A friend of mine just bought teammates, you might want to check another location or see if they can order it. JG is great but for no irrigation the teammates would be my firts pick,
If you have aerated like I did spreading rhe seeds should be enough, many will just go in the holes and you can rake it you want but in my experience it works really well just the way I did it.
This may be an odd question, but how is the texture of this grass? I want a low maintenance lawn (I dont really want to water it), but I also want to be able to walk in my backyard barefoot and I know some grasses are rather coarse.
Yes, I needed the same thing for this area. It feels very good, and you would just think its the same as most grasses. Its nothing like a hard grass or tough weed or something like that. eco did a great job with this variety. One of the best tips I ever got was to use this for a low maintenance area.
No, even now i have no water supply within 1000' feet of that area. This summer was brutually hot with no rain for 6 weeks and the lawn was about 50% brown, but as soon as it cooled off, the lawn is now back about 90% looking great so even years later I am still very pleased with this. You won't get a perfect lawn but with no watering on your own thats a prety good tradeoff for how nice it looks.
Wow, this is awesome. I am golfer, but I also take care of my lawn too. This looks just like an golf course. Well done sir. You're the best. I am your subscriber. :)

Would that seed work for starting a new lawn? We have just sandy dirt in Colorado. Thank you God bless
Fantastic!
You inspired me, took the photos and they are now on instagram
@@SilverCymbal Like what I see. The summer season's coming down the home stretch and I would say this has become a successful renovation project. When the the temps come down along with a fall feeding, the lawn should green up nicely. Put a feather in your hat. Nice job. ~ Mike
Hope we can see what’s look like in the Dry season.
Sure, if you take a look on my instagram I posted a picture maybe a week or two ago. This has been an absolutely terrible season here in Mass and it's not perfect but considering I have spent no money or time on watering it looks pretty great. I am so pleased that I did this.
Great job looks awesome
Thank you very much I am very pleased with how this turned out considering my lawn looked like an ugly dump there for 7 years before doing this. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
How long did you wait after applying the tenacity??
Did you tenacity/ aerate and seed within a day or two? Thanks.
Where did you purchase it? How much per bag and what is the coverage area?
Southern California here zero rain and now we can’t irrigate. I guess we need to learn to love dust.
How long after you used Tenacity did you aerate and seed?
The amazing news with Tenacity is that you don’t have to wait at all, the seed can go down before during or after, it has no effect on seed at all. Truly a remarkable product for weed control and different than any other. Everything you need to be weed free: Tenacity Weed Control: amzn.to/2JM4APm - Surfactant: amzn.to/2Xz6dod - Dye/Colorant: amzn.to/2Jta4yh
2 Gallon Sprayer: amzn.to/2xBJP3k
If I’m re seeding an existing lawn (overseed)how long should I wait to mow?
Does that mean you seed before the weed has completely died? Will tall fescue work if you intend to water?
Would any grass seed from lesco do this or is it only this one specifically? Can't find this one online and my local branch is out.
Yes, doesn't look like they carry this seed anymore.
I love this thanks
I am in MA. Would this work if I planted in April or May?
Great video, I following steps you suggested, I hope I able to get similar results, as my yard is about 2 acres is kind of hard to water all of it. fingers crossed,
Thanks again.
What setting did you use on the spreader for the seed? I got the team mates plus seed and the bag does not have what setting to use for the spreader.
Thank you I'm tired of dragging a hose around I have a large yard
How long after planting seed should you wait to put down the starter fertilizer?
JG is great but for no irrigation the teammates would be my firts pick,
@@SilverCymbal thanks, I will try that.
Did you throw some soil on seeds? Or just threw seeds and thats all?
If you have aerated like I did spreading rhe seeds should be enough, many will just go in the holes and you can rake it you want but in my experience it works really well just the way I did it.
Where can you get this Lesco Team Mates Plus lawn grass seed?
Bad year for lawns maybe but good year for football...GO PATS!!!
So what was your soil ph when you decide to put lime?
My lawn is bad....lots of weeds.Do i need to first kill weeds, And where can I get tenacity to buy?
I bought tenacity off of amazon for about $60 for a concentrated bottle. Start by killing weeds then seed
Thank you. This is how you start the grass, but do you have to water it for it to continue to grow in the spring and summer?
No, even now i have no water supply within 1000' feet of that area. This summer was brutually hot with no rain for 6 weeks and the lawn was about 50% brown, but as soon as it cooled off, the lawn is now back about 90% looking great so even years later I am still very pleased with this. You won't get a perfect lawn but with no watering on your own thats a prety good tradeoff for how nice it looks.
Thank you!@@SilverCymbal
Wow, this is awesome. I am golfer, but I also take care of my lawn too. This looks just like an golf course. Well done sir. You're the best. I am your subscriber. :)
Very happy to have you as part of my channel and appreciate the nice comments all around. Thanks again
Do you happen to know which brand would be comparable to Lesco here in Canada please ? Thanks
