First saw the Sunjoe two years ago on your channel, just used it for third year two weeks ago and fertilized. Got a lot of rain after and it's starting to look fairway quality. A couple neighbors asked me how I do it. Told the to watch your channel 😊😊
I dethatched my backyard twice with the greenworks dethatcher for an upcoming overseed with Lawnlife's TTTF/KBG (hopefully today/tomorrow) but now I may just go ahead and use the tractor tow-behind for a scarify as well to get a full and proper prep. Always had good luck with that tool before any type of seed application. Just need the weather to agree with me!
Finally took your advice and went to get my own dethacher but sunjoe and others were sold out. I decided to buy a cheapo from amazon. Like so many amazon thinfs these days, it appears they're all coming out of the same factory now so i figured brand doesn't much matter. Just finished last night and ready for seeding. I only used the scarifier cuz my soil is uneven and awful, removing rocks and such that came with my last topsoil load. Once i fix that and it's as smooth as your front lawn I'll use the dethatcher attachment. Between this, tenacity, and barenburg seeds I'd better have a good lawn this year.
Professionly, I've been performing both aeration and detaching services for over 35 years and actually doing aeration in the fall is absolutely the best thing you can do for your lawn. Part of aeration benefits is to help break down excess thatch, but the main benefit is to strengthen the root system of the existing grass by reducing compaction and allowing the root system to grow into the holes from the plug removal. This is also the best preparation for overseeding, creating the best seed to soil contact, which is essential for successful germination. Some thatch layer is ok, but if it gets excessive from not aerating, only dethatch in the spring after the 3rd mowing or so.
When aerating, spread compost over the lawn to fill holes and some lays on top. Overseed using Tenacity to prevent foreign growth. Both aerating and loosening the soil at the same time. Allowing existing grass roots to spread and grow, compost eating up the clay, and filling with seed.

Most homeowners don't have their lawns aerated at all, and their grass is still beautifully green and thick. If your soil is not hard and compacted, it doesn't need to be aerated.
Scarifying definitely helped the lawn it looks 100% better, but it doesn't fix the compacted soil or dry areas in summer. Have tried a concentrated wetting agent but this doesn't help the compacted soil dry spots either. Will definitely need to plug the lawn to fix this problem.

Hi Ginja, sorry to bother you. I absolutely love your channel. I just wish that you were also in the south. I live in McKinney TX. I was all hiped and ready to go ripping with my dethatch and scarifier until you mentioned that this is not great for Bermuda. I also loved all your episodes on weed control and looked towards tanacity, but again hesitant towards Bermuda. Do you have recommendations or a place that I can be pointed to, to best help me in my area? Thank you so much for all that you do!
hey!!!! so about this...... ideally you want to use a verticutter to cut the runners. the scarifiers commonly get runners bound up in the machine and causes a massive issue. here's my recommendation for those with bermuda. scalp the lawn down as low as you can. then do a dethatch just above the runners. then if you'd like to run the scarifier and thin out the runners do it at 5mm setting, one above the lowest settings. great way to do it and you'll have great success. Slay that lawn!
St Augustin runs off stolons and won't have thatch. If your referring to the debris you can use a device like the sun Joe dethatcher attachment on higher settings above the stolons to remove lawn debris.
They both do the same thing. The thin tines just aren’t as aggressive. The different companies called the cartridges different. Allett calls the thin tines the scarifier, the thicker metal blades the dethatcher but also have a verticutter.
depends on how bad the thatch problem is and if your debris problem is really thick and sticky. if the debris is loose i prefer to dethatch first then scarify. if the debris won't come up off the surface i prefer to scarify first then dethatch.
Hey Ginja, Love the Channel and the info you provide! I have a couple of questions. First, does the scarifying process that you showed replace the aerating? I dethatch and aerate with over seed ever fall (my lawn is 7 years old, new build, had been rough getting it going in the beginning) and would like to get it down to just using one machine if possible! Second, I have the Sunjoe dethatcher with the scarifier attachment, do you think the Ryobi battery powered is as good (I saw that you were using both)? I love the sunjoe but I get beat up with the cord! Would love to switch to an all battery powered machine. Thanks Bro! Again, Love the Channel!!!
Very new at this. My Lawn is just being revived. I was told to aerate it fertilize and seed. I am in VA with Bermuda grass. Should I do this? In the video you said stay away.
as i mention in the video I prefer the sunjoe dethatcher / scarifier. as for bentgrass eradication that will depend on the type of grass you want to keep. if you have cool season grass like kentucky bluegrass, rye, or fescue tenacity works great.
this seems fine for you, BUT what do you do when you have 32000 SQ. FT. OF GRASS!! this then seems like not such a great idea. no cheap ryobi or sun joe will last even a single pass on my STEEP hillside (plus the surface roots here and there). i got a bad knee (5 surgeries) was looking for a replacement for core aeration. i am guessing paying someone to core aerate is my only option. what do you think????
I will say, I have 25,000 sf of grass, ALWAYS avoided dethaching and aerated for the last 20 years becasue I always found those dethatchers to be so hard to handle. I bought a 15 amp 15” Sunjoe (equivalent for $130) and CANNOT BELIEVE how EFFECTIVE and EASY dethatching with this machine and then the back-pack blower to remove the thatch was. The machine weights nothing and the action of the blade “pulls it along” so you dont really have to exert any energy. While aerating is definitely something that will be further benifit, knowing I have that machine in the shed I can pull out 2-3 times a year and eliminate the thatch with relatively minimal effort gives me great price of mind. Yes, paying someone to do anything is always the easier way, but reliability of a good job and getting them when you need them is always such a challenge. For me, in most cases, my tool box is NOT my checkbook. Having the extension cord on the machine ALSO makes it so much easier to find my way back to the house 😂😂🤣🤣
@@pestandlawnginja my understanding is a verticutter, is the same as a dethatcher. It just comes down to the angle of the blades. In my case, straight up and down, vertical. Whereas what you used, the blades are more angled, correct?

Mow it pretty much every four days. I do Hydretain every month from june thru sept.

interesting. never heard of that happening. what you could do is use the dethatcher on a higher setting. you'll still want to get the garbage debris off the lawn.
I have an unrelated question: I have KBG and live in Denver, CO. I just realized I have quite a bit of poa annua in my lawn this year. Can you help me get rid of it? I used Anderson's preemergent before I realized it was in my lawn. Now, with the Spring here, I have it everywhere and boy am I mad at myself for not seeing it sooner. Do you have any recommendations on how to get rid of it? Thanks! Love your channel!
Nice...I see you upgraded to a gimble camera mount. No more shaky hands or rotating camera angles! Ginja stepping up the video game. Would you recommend scarifying for Zoysia after the spring green up? You didn't mention Zoysia, but it grows with both stolons and rhizomes. I'll be fertilizing for the first time this season in a week or two.
Vertical cutters may be a better option. The major issues is the scarifier blades are not sharp enough to cut through the runners and commonly the stolons and runners bind in the machine as a result
Awesome! I want to buy SunJoe but it's been holding me up since I have a TTTF lawn. It's a bunch type grass. I believe it doesn't repair as I have had dead spot for years and it never filled in. What are your thoughts on dethatching a TTTF lawn?
OK Ginja I see the IFA bag which means you must be one of my neighbors! I’m over by American Fork Canyon. Are you close by? My lawn needs a lot of help!
scalp and a dethatch that sits above the runners. Here's the deal. for bemuda using a verticutter is the way to go. it cuts the excess runners. the reason why the scarifier isn't good on bermuda is because the flails are not commonly sharp enough to cut the runners and it binds in the machine. causing a mass amount of frustration. but a good scalp and light dethatch is awesome especially in the spring time.
How long did it take to dethatch your beautiful long man beard? Hope it grows back soon. 😊 Your videos are always inspiring and informative. Thanks buddy.
Their isnt a downside to core aeration, each time i do it the cores i pull get a little deeper so it is working. I have a power rake and the main reason you wanna run that us to strip out the dead growth to allow it to breathe and it helps you shorten the HOC. If you want good advice on lawncare take a look at what they do on golf courses (they topdress with sand, works better than peat)
I've decided to stop aerating my lawn, and to only dethatch and use liquid aeration products. Every year, I aerate, and end up stirring up new poa triv growth.
@@ryanfassett6816 For the longest time, there were two options: 1. Cut out the patches of Poa Triv + reseed or lay sod. 2. Kill with multiple treatments of Roundup, and reseed. But now, the product Velocity PM is available to residential customers. It's designed to target and kill Poa Triv and Poa Annua. Golf courses have been using it for years. Lawncare channels are just starting to test this product, so I'm hoping it actually works. But one big problem right now: it's very expensive! A 16oz bottle costs over $550.
@@ryanfassett6816 I cut it out, and replace with patches of sod. I could seed, but since I always notice the Triv in the Spring, I'd rather have instant grass than take the chance on Spring seeding.
Me personally... depends on how often I mow. Once a week mowing I bag. Anything 3x to 6x per week I mulch. Great for the soil and grass when done properly
I’d like to know what to do about clay. My whole backyard is clay. I have dumped tons of manure on it in the past years but after a year of nice grass it goes back to yuck. Course the two big oaks don’t help. 😡
The clay usually isn't causation to bad grass. so many benefits to clay, it holds the most amount of nutrient and also water. with that said the possible side effects to clay is having to much water in the soil. so watering properly is the most important aspect. If you want to amend the soil and change its composition my suggestion is to sand level the lawn with playground or washed mason sand. I have a few how to videos on this subject.
they are when you do it right. in this instance it wasn't done correctly. compost would be a great solution if he didn't have a boat load of clay. which is why we are amending the soil
Great content as always! Have been following you from Norway from the beginning. Im surprised that you dont have 500k followers by now. How can we help you grow your channel? Have a great weekend my friend =)
Ripping out good grass doing more harm, stop lawn abuse. What aerating does allows water to go deeper into the lawn, grass roots will follow. The best thing to do is lightly rake the lawn that the grass is standing not matted, Water deeply once a week, do not cut below 2.5 inches. Aerating in the fall is better than spring.
Choose what you like… but after scarifying your lawn roll out a 1/4” layer of organic compost. Your lawn, soil, micro-organisms in the soil and our waterways will thank you.
Aerate every few years (in the Fall) and you will not have thatch. Fertilize in December (or just prior to ground freezing) and you will have the first greenest lawn in the Spring guaranteed. 25 years lawncare and landscaping ... retired.

Thanks!!!! If youre not first you're last
what about St Agustine grass
I have a question how to get rid of moss. Is your professional opinion.
OK Ginja I see the IFA bag which means you must be one of my neighbors! I’m over by American Fork Canyon. Are you close by? My lawn needs a lot of help!
I'm in the valley! See lawnmastersacademy.com
Ginja, what do you recommend for Bermuda? I have my Sunjoe ready to go
scalp and a dethatch that sits above the runners.
I tried dormant seeding this winter should I still scarify my lawn?
I wouldn't unless the seed has established
Love it. I will try. TY!
right on!
What setting do you use on Sun Joe scarifier?
The lowest when using the scarifier and the zero setting for dethatcher
Hmm! 🤔 I didn’t know that I didn’t know about that!!!
Cool cool 😎
So Bermuda is screwed. Standard dethatch and aeration.
No. Find yourself a verticutter. I could have explained it better. It's not the process that's the issue but mainly the machines capability
Can I still scarify and dethatch this week, when it's too late? I'm West Jordan
Yes
How long did it take to dethatch your beautiful long man beard? Hope it grows back soon. 😊
Your videos are always inspiring and informative. Thanks buddy.
took me 5 years hahaha
It depends on what type of grass you have!
I just aerator my lawn today and going to lay down Halts fertilizer in the morning
awesome! Glad to hear you're out on the lawn!
@@pestandlawnginja I really enjoy working on my lawn
Great tip
Glad it was helpful!
Is there such thing as over scarifying?
Yes for sure. Scarify causes a bit of stress
4:44 Every golf green twice a year 🤘🏼
True true 👍
I've decided to stop aerating my lawn, and to only dethatch and use liquid aeration products. Every year, I aerate, and end up stirring up new poa triv growth.
i hear that. good luck getting rid of the poa this year.
What do you do to get rid of Poa Triv?
@@ryanfassett6816 For the longest time, there were two options:
I experienced the same thing by aerating. I will no longer do it. How does the liquid aeration work for you? I was thinking about trying it?
@@ryanfassett6816 I cut it out, and replace with patches of sod. I could seed, but since I always notice the Triv in the Spring, I'd rather have instant grass than take the chance on Spring seeding.
From what I found was that you need both scarifying and aeration
Do you bag your grass when mowing
Me personally... depends on how often I mow. Once a week mowing I bag. Anything 3x to 6x per week I mulch. Great for the soil and grass when done properly
Please expand on horizontal dethatching.
😅
my triangular approach has 5 simple steps
@@pestandlawnginja ...another way to say it might be, first go one way, then the other, to not confuse the folks.
I use the mower to pick up the thatch hehe
Nice
Your video must be pretty popular. The Sunjoe is no longer available on Amazon.
I have no thatch, only compact soil.
there you go, perfect
Uuum grass clippings are great compost for grass , also don’t you add some nice organic topsoil instead of sand .
they are when you do it right. in this instance it wasn't done correctly. compost would be a great solution if he didn't have a boat load of clay. which is why we are amending the soil
I don't get it why it's called a detatched if it does not detatch thatch..
And what is those things sticking out of your ears?
its interesting for sure. in europe they call our dethatcher a scarifier. ryobi recently made the change to calling the scarifier an aerator.
@@pestandlawnginjaI'm in europe (Norway) and just got a lawn aerator, which is actually a combined vertical cutter and power rake. 🤷♂️
Great content as always! Have been following you from Norway from the beginning. Im surprised that you dont have 500k followers by now. How can we help you grow your channel? Have a great weekend my friend =)
Love it! Thank you! I'll keep working hard. Appreciate the support
Is the ryobi better than the sunjoe?
You did not overseed???
no. I didn't need to.
What kind of grass do you have?
Ryegrass in the front and bluegrass in the back
Ripping out good grass doing more harm, stop lawn abuse. What aerating does allows water to go deeper into the lawn, grass roots will follow. The best thing to do is lightly rake the lawn that the grass is standing not matted, Water deeply once a week, do not cut below 2.5 inches. Aerating in the fall is better than spring.
If I had a small lawn like yours I would have artificial grass installed.
4 mins in. Why do I feel marketed to?
I’ve done both for years on Bermuda and it works. Your information isn’t totally correct.
not impossible, best to use a verticutter. these style machines commonly grab the stolons, especially on virgin lawns
Every time I used the scarifier in the past it broke the machine because the soil is so hard. Be careful.
best to get water in the soil for sure.
Choose what you like… but after scarifying your lawn roll out a 1/4” layer of organic compost. Your lawn, soil, micro-organisms in the soil and our waterways will thank you.
Great tip!
Scalp before de-thatching. Its more effective and a much easier clean up.
very true
Aerate every few years (in the Fall) and you will not have thatch. Fertilize in December (or just prior to ground freezing) and you will have the first greenest lawn in the Spring guaranteed. 25 years lawncare and landscaping ... retired.
unfortunately every area is different and different species of grass have different thatch growing habits
@@pestandlawnginja Good rebuttal.
People that say scareifier and not scarifier, WTF? If you rip up your flesh you will get scars not scares.
I think scar is cooler but

Look at those mountains beautiful. UK
Thanks for the comment!
Ryobi is pronounced ree-o-bee.
In Japanese pronunciation yes. In the American language no. Do you pronounce croissant with a perfect French accent? Hahaha 😆
Scary fire lol
💯
Why was I watching this video and saying he reminds me of Lawn Ginja. Then oh man it is him!!!! The new beard threw me off.
bahahaha, love it!
Sorry but I’ll use a core aerator like all golf courses use.
And like all courses do they take the cores off the grass and push sand into the holes as I mentioned in the video.
