    Beautiful kicks. Many years ago, we learned in TKD in side stances to have the knees closer to a horserider stance. It was used more for self defense by "standing your ground" and more emphasis on blocking and hand strikes. When doing the sidekick the leg locked out upon contact. It shows how things change over time.

    My ITF Taekwondo instructor trained Muay Thai for about 18 months I think but the club he was training at had the instructor up and leave with no warning and he didn't start up elsewhere. I digress, he said when he'd spar the pure Thai fighters found the sidekick hard to deal with which was interesting as a lot of MMA guys neglect it. I've seen aTeicia Torres use it a lot and Connor Mcgregor uses it to the leg a lot very effective if done right.

    Sidekick technique is explained well here. Comparing it to a jab is a great analogy. Keeps distance between you the opponent a measure if you will. It is all a great set up kick for a quick front round. Or a front round and then sneak that side kick in. And of course nothing beats stopping your opponent in their tracks when using it defensively. Great video, technique, and explanations.

    Comment: it appears your double slide side kick is really, one longer slide with a barely perceptible foot shift at end. We often practice multiple slides, but in reality it seems to only be one long slide with a front foot fake leading to a final elongated kick (where planted foot makes a tiny hop or rotation to gain another 2 inches...)

  • @HeadCannonPrime

    Great video! It's amazing how much has been covered in a single video about the side kick. In 9:15 you mentioned groin tightness and people kicking with a bent knee. You see many beginner martial artists kicking like this and sometimes even more advanced ones do the same. Is it just because of stiffness and lack of flexibility or because they learned to kick the wrong way and retained this " bad habit" of kicking with an inverted knee? It would be interesting to see a video on how to fix this!

    • @GingerNinjaTrickster
      @GingerNinjaTrickster  5 років тому +1

      It can be either or both. Best fix is to go over the form slow holding onto a wall. This will help understand the mechanics and If you can't physically do the motion then you need to work on loosening up and become more flexible in the areas you will need.

    Did you ever thought about publishing a video about TKD patterns? You show so many cool and helpful videos about sparring, kicking, jumping, etc. However TKD also consists of basic techniques and performing patterns. It would be awesome seeing you performing some higher grade patterns and also tell people a bit about them. Every TKD black-belt spend huge efforts in practicing and to perfect their patterns and its a bit of a pity that many people think that TKD is only about fancy jumping kicks and sparring. (Just some thoughts of a 1st degree ITF Black-Belt...)

Since I am right handed, but left footed I normally have my power leg (the left one) in front and I can much faster kick and surprise my opponent that way
