i am a wtf taekwondo and i tried this kind of side kick technique, and i made it so adoptable. very useful even in other tkd style. love you video GNT.
Beautiful kicks. Many years ago, we learned in TKD in side stances to have the knees closer to a horserider stance. It was used more for self defense by "standing your ground" and more emphasis on blocking and hand strikes. When doing the sidekick the leg locked out upon contact. It shows how things change over time.
Those tutorials with Van Roon are so great, very precise, lots of explanation and presentation from different angles. This guy who is taking part in those videos with him is so cute:)
My ITF Taekwondo instructor trained Muay Thai for about 18 months I think but the club he was training at had the instructor up and leave with no warning and he didn't start up elsewhere. I digress, he said when he'd spar the pure Thai fighters found the sidekick hard to deal with which was interesting as a lot of MMA guys neglect it. I've seen aTeicia Torres use it a lot and Connor Mcgregor uses it to the leg a lot very effective if done right.
Yup it definitely has strengths and weaknesses! Like most things I think if you're not familiar with it you tend to be a bit slow in processing it as a threat. You know?
@@VanRoonMartialArts Definitely, you get new people sometimes at Taekwondo and as you've been so used to sparring the same people it takes some adjustment at times if they are unorthodox.
Sidekick technique is explained well here. Comparing it to a jab is a great analogy. Keeps distance between you the opponent a measure if you will. It is all a great set up kick for a quick front round. Or a front round and then sneak that side kick in. And of course nothing beats stopping your opponent in their tracks when using it defensively. Great video, technique, and explanations.
Thank you Carl. Thanks to you i have developed my side kick to be instant. Since the release of this video i tend to come here time to time to rehearse. Gold content as always and really wished you could upload more often
GNT, just so you know, your technique is my ultimate goal. I'm 35, and going for my Red Belt next week (Taekwondo). But even though I'm ready for my test, I'm nowhere near the level in which you are at.
I liked your tutorial videos specially the parts where you explained in depth the don'ts of this kick. Just by looking at some 1 minute tutorial video it is hard to follow the minute details but you told what happens when you do it the wrong (undesirable) way. Thank you for that.
I'm a shotokan practioner. I used this kick against several people in sparring. I highly recommend this version of the kick. It's faster than the slide up sidekick.
I have won SO MANY tournaments with this concept in the early belts. Until you get up to red belt or black belt and everyone knows this. Our dojo practices these slide side kicks ad nauseum pre-tournament.
Thank you for this Tipps. I have the 7 Kup at the moment and just start whit sparring. Your video will help me. Thanks again. (sorry for me bad English, I am from Germany)
Great video! It's amazing how much has been covered in a single video about the side kick. In 9:15 you mentioned groin tightness and people kicking with a bent knee. You see many beginner martial artists kicking like this and sometimes even more advanced ones do the same. Is it just because of stiffness and lack of flexibility or because they learned to kick the wrong way and retained this " bad habit" of kicking with an inverted knee? It would be interesting to see a video on how to fix this!
It can be either or both. Best fix is to go over the form slow holding onto a wall. This will help understand the mechanics and If you can't physically do the motion then you need to work on loosening up and become more flexible in the areas you will need.
Excellent tutorial! Comment: it appears your double slide side kick is really, one longer slide with a barely perceptible foot shift at end. We often practice multiple slides, but in reality it seems to only be one long slide with a front foot fake leading to a final elongated kick (where planted foot makes a tiny hop or rotation to gain another 2 inches...)
This side kick is my favorite to do. The sliding/shifting side kick to me is one of the most effective versions of the kick. Great stuff guys, keep it up 🤗
I was having a little trouble following your words--due mainly to to you speaking somewhat fast. What is I T stylist? IF I heard you correctly? Good video and verbal explanation of kicking issues. Good channel content.
ITF (International Taekwon-Do Federation) as opposed to World Taekwon-Do Federation. One of the two major branches of Taekwon-Do by which the art is generally divided around the world. Thank you
I did have but now I only have a few pictures :( I had loads on my old acer laptop and the hard drive got corrupted. I lost everything. I don't like mentioning it as I know it sounds like bull 😂 But people that know me in ITF and kickboxing know that I used to compete regularly.
paladin ellsworth Hearing that I was having a child and a few months before Sophia was born, I was getting popular on UA-cam and didn’t like the pressure of turning up and everyone expecting me to win. I didn’t enjoy it and wouldn’t spar with the freedom that I usually did.
@@GingerNinjaTrickster I just lost all of my kids tkd videos with an infected hard drive. I feel your pain. Gotta subscribe to a cloud service nowadays to protect your files. Both kids, 11 & 12, going for their black belts in May and trying out for Nationals this year. Really hurts that I lost those videos bcuz I hoped to show them the progression from almost 3 years of their hard work. Cloud backup brother!
Got counter side sick from a senior mate in my first sparring back in 80s ITF days. Now I've been practicing Muay Thai and we call it side teep... More powerful I reckon.
Love this but one also has to remember Bruce also had to exaggerate movements to look good on camera for his films. In actual jkd his movements and leg span were small. I'm sure you obviously know this but just wanted to clarify this point for anyone who may not understand the difference in actual and film. :D
Did you ever thought about publishing a video about TKD patterns? You show so many cool and helpful videos about sparring, kicking, jumping, etc. However TKD also consists of basic techniques and performing patterns. It would be awesome seeing you performing some higher grade patterns and also tell people a bit about them. Every TKD black-belt spend huge efforts in practicing and to perfect their patterns and its a bit of a pity that many people think that TKD is only about fancy jumping kicks and sparring. (Just some thoughts of a 1st degree ITF Black-Belt...)
I would love it if you visit Mumbai , India as there are many fans like me here .

This is a really good and helpful video. As I’m looking to improve in my sparring, this is perfect. Working on my flexibility since I naturally tense up, (that tension has also been an annoyance in my drumming haha). Any ideas on how to get a natural transition between techniques? (training to reach a flow state if you will) PS: I did rank up to Green Belt! 😊😊😊
This type of kicking is how ITF is becoming a sport ( fighting for points in tournaments) .. No more a maximum power hand to hand combat martial art with the moto " one strike one kill "....
I don't even can get my foot about my belt. I am not flexible enough. But that tutorial is great. You still can get so much force into that kick. Since I am right handed, but left footed I normally have my power leg (the left one) in front and I can much faster kick and surprise my opponent that way
Hey very nice video! I was thinking on the way wich Joe Rogan does the sidekick (in a stand position, he lift his knee and do some kind of twist with his torso). I understand that The technich shown on this video is quicker, but do you think that joe's version is more powerfull?
There are different techniques for the side kick, some mentioned in this video, that have advantages and disadvantages. If you want more power and pull back or rely on more movement first you will sacrifice speed.
