  • Tonight I'm looking at Bon Jovi. Whenever I've seen them I'm impressed not only with Richie's playing, but also his voice. I always wonder if he were a solo artist and never joined Bon Jovi where he would have ended up!

Bon Jovi has never been the same since Richie left. His ability to sing harmony on a lot of the tracks (especially on NEW JERSEY, THESE DAYS and KEEP THE FAITH) really pushed some of those songs from good to great. And he is an awesome guitar player to boot.

If you want to see what Richie was capable of, listen to his cover of "The Wind Cries Mary" from the Ford Fairlane soundtrack, or the song "Rosie" from his first solo album. Also, the acoustic version of "Wanted Dead Or Alive" is really, REALLY good as well.

And not only that album, the other two also have great songs and solo songs, for example the Deep Purple song "When a blind man cries" Richie sings it in blues version ... it's AMAZING !!!!!
Personally Jon's voice was very good, but I find it very mellow, Richie's full of strength, power, SOUL !!!

This was during back to back tours. He was getting cortisone injections to get through.. richie sounds really good here and love the solo. When the band got back they said they walked way without saying a word and took two years off Richie did solo , David worked on broad way and won a Tony .richie's divorced and has a daughter. Jon has 4 children is married and is doing charity work. I dont think you know this band well at all. Do some research

As a guitarist, Richie is perhaps the most underrated and underappreciated rock guitarist of his generation. He has great tone, feel, good technique and, unlike many others, writes his solos for the song, never overplaying, always tasteful, melodic and dynamic. They always fit the mood and character of the song. Some of my fave solos of his: Stick to Your Guns; Secret Dreams; Raise Your Hands; Let it Rock; Never Say Goodbye; 99 in the Shade; Love for Sale; Dry County; Stranger in This Town; Church of Desire...

Brano Jr Richie and Jon write and plan. If you check out interviews . Richie doesn’t want the shit of lead. He sings now . More like jamming .
Richie has a vocal coach now! Says his throat gets sore.. he laughs in his 50 s taking singing lesson . Jon and Richie, that’s their style😀. One sings others there to make it better!

      R W yes ! I couldn’t believe Jon’s emotions when Richie was there!

Richie was in a band , I think it was called Memories , before Bon Jovi .

Richie also sang songs lead with Jon. Yes Jon thinks of it as a job! Ask , Justin Bieber 😂
      He worked them hard !
      They did well .
I have watched every video . . Fil l check everything . LoL
      Obsess! Love Bon Jovi .
Micheal Jackson. Now Adam Lambert ! 🤨hmm trying to find him make a mistake . The kid to me is great.
I think , Jon and Richie had a plan . Jon sings up here ! Richie sings down under . Saves concerts! Travelling,
But in long run saves all round . They don’t talk to much about family ! Ask Howard Stern. LoL he embarrass Jon all the time . And Richie about going out with Cher. Check it out . So funny . Howard inducted Bon Jovi into rock hall of fame and Howard called Jon to see to see if he needed a passport to go to Cleveland .. LoL
Hope you get time to watch the Bon Jovi into the hall of fame . It’s funny and emotions are running. High
      Thanks

Jon and Richie are like a classic, tragic love story-these two should still be together. They are Bon Jovi. I’ve always said Richie Sambora has a beautiful voice, but I love Jon’s, too. Together, they are incredible.

    • @mariannetuite7411

No, they absolutely shouldn’t. Richie was miserable for years (by his own admittance). Why would anyone want that for someone else? I saw Richie’s solo tours in ‘98, ‘12, and ‘14. While ‘98 was fantastic, ‘12 (after he admitted how undervalued he felt in the band, but before he left) he was like a caged animal freed. He had the world at his feet. Unfortunately by ‘14, other influences got in his way. But I firmly believe if he’d had the confidence to be a solo performer instead of a right hand man, he’d have had a stellar career as a solo performer

richie's backing carried all the chorus's for the band. stranger in this town was a beast record. ballad of youth got some radio and video play but the record is very underrated. and yes as far as playing he was one of the best of the era. maybe not speed wise. but fast enough. and he played with tremendous feel.

I never understood the shade that came Bon Jovi's way. JBJ in his hey day had one of the best voices ever. Sambora was a flat out bad ass, for all the reasons you stated. I think they both looked so good, and some of their music pandered to the pop music crowd, that there was some jealousy. But they played in the big leagues for decades so they deserve much respect. Let me add that the intro to the song is one of the best 12 string hooks ever. Thanks Fil, I am still binging on your prodigious content and catching up.

Hair bands became too popular in the late 80s, and Bon Jovi was at the forefront. Imagine the haters' reactions during the early 90s when the band was still going multi-platinum in the grunge era, then got embraced by a new generation in the 2000s. Heck, the three most viewed music videos from them are "It's My Life", "Livin' on a Prayer", & "Always".

And who would have been Jon’s guitar player ?
Maybe Sabo staying with Jon . An interesting pad to imagine. Richie being in a rival band as lead.
I imagine them being frenemies like Nicky Lauda and James Hunt.
Jon being lauda more work driven and disciplined while Richie is Hunt wilder, enjoying life and going crazy.

Im 46 now, living in the USA, been here 15 years now from Birmingham UK...I remember when i was 18...Woodgreen London, buying Richies Solo album "Stranger in this Town"...i don't think it left my player for 2 years, at LAST ....songs that he was meant to play went through my mind...."Father time"..."The Answer".....the list goes on!...and then...POW...."Undiscovered Soul"....which even today in 2019 is played weekly...Richie has the SOUL of a musician...where Jon had dollar signs.
And today 2019, and the past 5 or so years , seeing Richie with Orianthi...in her own self a MASSIVE talent on a 6 string, but both with blues in their blood....hell, you can't go wrong!!!.

RS, a many times self-proclaimed 'journeyman guitarist', does have a knack for
assembling a minimal number of notes into well timed , dynamic, very musical
leads...I think he is a humble guy and I think that timing and inflection
and personality are as important as technicals...he is therefore very underrated as a guitarist.

I think Jon and Ritchie's voices compliment each other well and is what made the music better as a result. Apart? Who is to say that things would have been different for either without the other, they'd have likely found success on their own but together they seemed to be, dare I say, magic?

I always thought the same thing too. I saw them in concert in 1989 when I was 16 for their New Jersey tour and Richie was amazing (he had that same three-headed guitar)!! Sambora is one of my top five favorite guitarists and his solo stuff is quite impressive, like when he released The Wind Cries Mary (his rendition of a Hendrix song). Thanks for doing this! So many metal heads don’t give props to guitarists like Sambora because of the type of music they played and that’s BS. Will you react to C.C. Deville from Poison next? His solos are some of my favorites, especially on Life Goes On.

Jon has a good voice, but Richie has more vocal range and can sing much higher. They actually compliment each other very well. I am not knocking Jon nor Richie here, as I like them both as musicians, and I was a big Bon Jovi fan back in the 80's. However, if you listen to those amazing falsettos on the song "Runaway," and a few other songs on the first Bon Jovi album, it is neither Jon nor Richie singing those high notes. Those high notes are sung by none other than Aldo Nova. That was the great part about physical music media like records, tapes and CDs, as compared to digital downloads, you could actually read the credits and other interesting information on the album covers and liners. Oh, the good ol' days. Aldo Nova is actually given credit for the backing vocals on "Runaway." Just a bit of trivia for everyone to enjoy.🙂

The thing i always liked about Richie is that his voice is the opposite of jons. Jons voice is more raspy and thinner that cuts through the mix well with his flavour and range. Sambora has a rich soulfull voice with depht and warmth. Same reason i love blink-182 so much, 2 totally different voices (Although blink obviously sucks live, in terms of actual vocal skills or singing ability). Or The Beatles as a better example.

Thank you for your analysis. I'm a new fan of Bon Jovi as I recently started to listen to their older stuff and I was honestly blown away. I'd like to share that when I listened to Richie's backing vocals for the first time, I was literally shocked coz I found his voice to b so gritty and full of rugged emotion. I used to like Jon's voice primarily coz he was the lead singer but never in my wildest dreams had I thought of the lead guitarist being equally good and sometimes even better at singing than the lead singer. I was glad to see that you've made the same observation. I love this particular performance which gives you goosebumps coz of how Richie entirely takes this song to a much higher level with both his singing and his guitar play. Many are not blessed with both. Also their rendering of Livin on a Prayer and Dead or Alive at 1989 VMAs is a brilliant performance of Richie Sambora. Now what I fail to understand is that how come a man full of so much talent and confidence and the ability to boot couldn't tear the charts as a solo artist. I've listened to his solo album Stranger in this Town and I was really impressed by it. But I've listened to it now, decades later. Why didn't it go up the charts then, I don't understand... My personal observation is that Richie lacks the cutthroat competitiveness which is a characteristic of JBJ. Richie comes across as more amicable and thoughtful to the point of being even spiritual if you listen to his interviews for his solo album back in 91, 92. Yes that extremely handsome man who the world knows as a goofy, talented guitarist has a tremendously serious side to him too which shows in his soulful voice and guitar play. I think that extra thoughtfulness might have been a hurdle in his way of pursuing a solo career with a vengeance coz otherwise with those looks, that voice and that killing guitar play he could've easily had a great solo career and this is coming from a young fan of his. So that's my observation and opinion..I'd like to know if you have a perspective on why he couldn't chart higher as a solo artist when he went for it in 91. Sorry for my long comment but honestly I love this man's talent and ability and its coz of him that I've started appreciating great guitar solos.
On a side note, wish I was in the 80s to see him at the height of his glory. And why don't we have all those videos in HD? Thanks for bearing with me.

I agree with you. I have thought the same. Richie had everything needed to be a very successful solo artist but he wanted to play the style of music that influenced him, not the flavor of the month at the time. I admire him for wanting quality even if it wasn’t what the mainstream wanted. He has always been about the music. Richie always said Jon was very intense. Much more so than he was, so Richie made it his gig to keep Jon in a good mood. I agree that Jon was much more driven. I am also a new “older” Jovi (Richie) fan. I listened to country music during Bon Jovi’s heyday. Sure hate that I missed it!

Yeah, Richie is special, I love him, his talent, his voice, everything, but....Jon IS Bon Jovi for me, he is the soul and the core sound of the band....he is the whole package...the charisma, the personality, the soul, the dedication, are all Jon. Maybe he lost parts of his range, but the simple fact that he still has the passion and willpower to be there, to sing, to perform and to push himself says everything. Jon will always be up there for me, as one of my favorite artists and human beings.

I really wish someone would have been around in the middle 80's when Jon was hitting those long high notes, the famous key change in Livin' on a prayer....Jon can't do any of it anywhere. Richie gave Jon the most incredible harmonies. That is what I miss most about Richie walking out on the band. Jon never said a bad word, but it sure made a few million fans distressed to say the least. It's too bad that Richie's solo efforts aren't as good as the songs he and Jon wrote together. Richie definitely has a stronger voice, but he isn't singing every note of every song like Jon, so I have to stick up for Jon on that. By the time he realized he was losing his voice, it was too late to do anything to fix the damage. These days, he grips that mic with both hands like a death grip to try and hit what notes he can. I love the band, but it's got to be hard work.

@@jasonl1942 Please tell me what he said!! I'll read every word of it. If you don't know, then I don't care. Then give me links to those articles or videos, or wherever you find them because I was 24 when Runaway was dropped and have been a fan ever since. If there were bad words spoken back then, so what?? Do you get along with whoever you are close to every minute of every single day?? I doubt that. I have 36 years of marriage now, and just 3 days ago my husband and I had one hell of a barn burner. First one that serious in years, but we've moved on just like Jon and Richie have. Jon called himself a "Benevolent Dictator", and after doing a little research, here is the best description I could find for you. "a ‘benevolent dictator’ is someone powerful enough to have the last word on anything and uses that power for good ends." That is Jon to a 'T'. It's HIS band, he has the last word, and they are all employed by him, which is why he fired Alec. Alec was fucking up on stage at concerts and Jon wouldn't have that, and I don't blame him a bit. It only takes one bad apple as the saying goes. Richie was worth a lot more. His voice, guitar skills, and songwriting skills made him very valuable. When you are spending 24/7 with the same guys for months on end, it's basically a marriage, so there will be fights, but in the end things either work there way out or they don't. The boys sent Richie to rehab TWICE, just to get him back to a place where he was thinking clearly, making the music the way we all love it. Jon didn't fire Richie, he walked away without saying a word except to the tabloids, but neither have said a bad word about the other that anyone outside of them knows. Jon's been asked a thousand times, and his answer has never swayed. "He just didn't show up for work one day", and that's the way he's told it just about every time. Nothing more than that. Sorry about the fucking book.

Alec didn't like the way Jon ran the business of the band, he didn't like the way Jon dictated to them, he didn't like the way Jon treated them and he certainly didn't like the way Jon didn't allow them freedom.
EVERYBODY knows Jon himself has said he thinks of himself as the godfather and likes to keep the band business 'in house' , no doubt to hide what he doesn't want the public to see that would ruin the image of the 'blood brothers' ideal he likes to promote.
Richie famously left, we all know what he did and what he said as we do with Jon, but let me ask you a question: if you were the CEO of your own business and your employee of thirty years decided to walk out on you mid tour would you do nothing and just say 'he just didn't turn up for work' or would you commence legal proceedings and sue your employee for breach of contract?
Why didn't Jon do this? Is it possible, just maybe, that richie knows way too much about Jon that he'd never like to be made public? If Jon decided to get nasty is it just possible that richie could respond in kind?
Do you not find it funny in the least that it's been a total non event, even though Jon can't help himself taking jabs at richie in interviews yet richie has always taken the more professional high road?
Richie would be stupid to air Jon's dirty laundry, look what happened when Alec did this, but make no mistake he would have so much to spill if he chose to.
But this is why Jon hasn't really pushed the issue, he's dumb but not dumb enough to know that if he pushed his legal proceedings richie could expose him and he doesn't want that.
And make no mistake, Jon is not a nice person, you'd have to be deaf and blind not to have seen the change in him since he took over the management of his band and made it into a corporate entity.
I used to be an ardent bon jovi fan, but I couldn't keep turning a blind eye to what Jon has done to the band, in his quest for success he's reduced his band into a trend chasing parody of itself that rewrites its own music and now writes songs named after fridge magnet mottos, seriously?! WTF happened to this once legendary band?
Sure soccer mums still get wet when he flashes his luminescent bleached veneers in his perfectly rehearsed poses on stage, he still knows how to rely on sentimentality to move his product, but for the rest of us who prefer quality of product instead of quantity the band has become a joke and it's outlived it's relevance.
If I have to hear another 'new' song about how a middle-aged multi millionaire has done it tough but he's stuck to his guns and did it his way while sticking it to the man I'm gonna puke.

I like rock music because of this band, it was their It’s My Life that changed my views about musics. After that song, I found and liked Livin’ on a Prayer, Dry County etc.
No doubt, Bon Jovi was my very first band I liked and of course, Jon was my very first favorite vocalist or frontman.
For vocals, I like both vocals.
Jon’s vocals are so recognizable (more commercial) but somehow a bit inconsistent through the years. For high notes, Jon sometimes struggled or dodged them (Sambora and Bryan would help him out - e.g: Livin’ on a Prayer). I don’t disrespect Jon, he is great singer and frontman.
Sambora’s vocals are bluesy and more powerful/ consistent. His best performance: Father Time
Yes, they’ve been touring together since 1984 until Sambora’s departure and that changed their vocals and we’re okay about that.
Bon Jovi is not quite a Bon Jovi without Richie Sambora. Those two are one of the best duo.
    Cheers!

I have thought since the 80s that Richie had a much stronger and higher voice than Jon. just listen to his high background vocals, not stretching the vocal chords at all, it’s natural for him. as many other said, his solo albums are incredible. I just wish that he would’ve sang and had his own songs on Bon Jovi albums, so that they could’ve gone back-and-forth. Because, the two of them are, or should I say were… So strong as far as vocals. Jon’s Voice is gone now. I don’t know what he did to his vocal cords, but something obviously happens to the point where he can’t sing anything anymore. He is struggling even with the easiest of notes. Makes me think either his hearing is gone or he totally destroyed his vocal cords somehow. it’s gotten to the point where he’s bringing fans up on stage to sing, Because he knows he can’t hit the notes.
It’s gonna be completely destroying him. As a singer myself, I’ve had nights where I had horrible issues. Those nights, I felt like somebody had stolen my soul. I can’t imagine it being permanent. as vocalists, we work our entire lines to build up a voice to a point where we are finally content… To have that taken away from you would be horrible. God bless you Jon. I know how hard it must be.
