McVie's bass has to be one of THE most iconic bass line's of all time. And the thing about Lindsey is there is NO ONE that plays a guitar like he does. It's absolutely sheer brilliance how he does it. It's extraordinary. The complimentary action between both of them here is epic.

Wanted to add 2 points. Lindsey himself has said many times that Fleetwood Mac was a puppy on recordings , but turned into a pitbull on stage. Having seen the band live 7 times I have witnessed this tornadic energy of his being unleashed on stage. It is truly something to behold. Glad I've got tickets to see him solo in October.
Second point is funny. I read an Instagram post from some young man that stated, "The reason I thought I couldn't play Never Going Back Again is that it has 2 guitars. Turns out it's one and I'm not Lindsey Buckingham."

For sure ... he was as dynamic a guitarist on stage as any I ever saw (there are many I haven't seen). Angus Young is certainly active, Prince was a great showman, Hendrix has showy moments (yeah ... saw him), Townsend, Morello is surprisingly flashy, ... but Buckingham was at least their equal in owning the stage visually as well as sonically. He seemed very athletic (as did Prince - less so Townsend, although his moves are iconic).
Just glad to see someone remark about his stagemanship.
Lindsey Buckingham is a true artist who developed his own way of playing by thinking “out-of-the-box!” His musical talent is sooooo apparent! 👍🏻🎸🎼

Lindsey has always been one of my favorite guitarists I love the way he Works himself into a frenzy as the song builds he leads with his emotion in his playing and singing he's a good performer to emulate if you're playing live a shy dude with tons of presence and a totally unique picking style

My wife and I saw Fleetwood Mac about three years ago and Lindsey Buckingham really shines in a live context. On record, he only plays what's need for the song when it comes to lead guitar, often underplaying. His finger picking for rhythm work is top notch both live and on recordings.

Fil, you're "spot on" in your analysis of Lindsey in that he is , in my opinion as well unfortunately, one of the most talented and underrated guitarists and vocalists of our time. Thank you for acknowledging this, and thank you for all of your videos. Very insightful and educational. I'm a drummer, but appreciate your analysis of guitar work as well.

I'm glad Stevie Nick's had a fit and made sure Lindsey was fired. Now we truly know that Lindsey Buckingham was Fleetwood Mac. We also get to see what a guitar extraordinaire Lindsey is.
I just seen your recent Big Love By Lindsey, and you mentioned more Mac, I rushed to this, Its so easy for people to rag that they sold out after Stevie and Lindsey joined . They were no long er blues. Or better yet they are Pop music, that is crap. They are straight up rock. Lindsey plays his ass off. The bass line is perfect. And the voices of Lindsey and Stevie were meant and are still meant to harmonize the way the do. Sadly they may never again. Mick is a beast and Christine is an angel on keyboards her version of Song bird, makes me cry. This is an awesome band thank you for the shout out. I can watch old performances all the way up to the dance. You should watch Silver Springs from The Dance concert. watching the long played out never ending emotion between them as she sings to him and his guitar sings for her. Thanks Fil!!!! OUTSTANDING CHOICE!!!

That building of Fleetwood and John McVie lead to Lindsey Buckingham, which led to an incredible sound.
I was never into the music style of Fleetwood Mac, so I never paid attention to his playing. I saw their comeback concert on tv and was blown away! All finger picked, WOW. A GREAT guitar player.

I've been a fan since '70 and followed the band thru it all. Sound City movie had the best quote of the Buckingham/Nicks era:

There's a lot of Peter Green fans out there that still say that Fleetwood era is the best.
I've always hated how much drugs took over the entire '79/'80 tour. However, it always amazed me that no matter how bad drugs took over on that tour, they were all musically so on and tight. The first live album I ever bought was Fleetwood Mac Live in 1981 when I was just 13 and I have always felt it has the absolute BEST "I'm So Afraid" solo. It's the solo that convinced me that Lindsey was underrated and use that very version as an argument breaker.

I saw a small hall show of Lindsay's band on PBS, it made me realize that about 90% of the Mac sound of that era came from him.
Lindsey is even more awesome live! And it's so interesting that he often keeps the heel of his hand down on the guitar, but he is still able to move his fingers so fast- that's hard to do!

Never mind that L.B. was underrated as a guitarist(ONE OF THE GREATEST,)but his vocals were so damn SPECIAL,GIVE THIS DUDE HIS DUE!
This song brings back a lot of my yesterday's !!!! Lindsey Buckingham is honestly so great, he's envolvement in Fleetwood Mac I believe gave the band such a lift it was incredible!! Not forgetting the brilliance of John Mcvie, Mick Fleetwood , Chrissy Mcvie and Stevie Nicks!!!! The Rumours album is one of the greatest album ever!!!! Great vid Fil!!!!

Lindsey is a very good guitar player!! Just pick up the DVD The Dance, the whole thing is excellent but he plays solo on 2 songs and the intensity and level of playing is off the charts!

Buckingham isn't underrated among guitar players. What he does is appreciated among the folks who play guitar for a living, even though most people may not see or understand how distinctive his style is. It is interesting to compare his style with that of Mark Knopfler, another renowned fingerpicker.
I've always loved Fleetwood Mac, in its many guises. Lindsey is a great guitarist, you really should listen to the Buckingham Nicks album, it's one of my favourite albums of all time.

Lindsey was underrated as a guitarist. He continuously played the parts of at least two people throughout his career with Fleetwood Mac. Sad to see that he will be missing on the upcoming tour. Will miss his vocals.

Feels good to listen to this recognition of Lindsey Buckingham's abilities, both as a guitar player and as a terrific singer as well. And I myself feel confirmed in my opinion that LB is much of a musician for musicians. You will hear no special effects, no pyro technics, no salto mortale, no shredding notes in tiny particles, just contributing all his skills "to the bigger picture", as he himself told us in some other video. Call it underrated - I call it misunderstood.

LOVE THIS, Fil -- wow, it's just mind-bending from beginning to end -- just an unmatched ensemble of incredible musicianship, all around! I think Fleetwood Mac's live performances were better than their studio recordings, by far! "The Dance" from 1997, is one of my favorite Mac live albums -- it just lifts you up into a sound cloud of melody & doesn't let you go until the last note is played!☄🎶 Seeing them in concert is an experience one never forgets...

Phil, they did The Dance Tour in 1997. The official video on the Fleetwood Mac channel for The Chain is live from this tour. It has excellent audio & you can see Lindsay's guitar playing. Even if you do not react to it, you may want to take a listen to it.
I prefer the 1982 Mirage Tour performance. That is available as well and a more authentic performance. I liked The Dance but it seemed more choreographed and put together for television. The 1982 performance is in your face Fleetwood Mac. All the power, their interpersonal relationships with one another, the musical perfection, the spontaneity is all being displayed here on stage. They are interacting with each other onstage what they can't do offstage. Look at the interaction between Nicks and Buckingham during Sister Of The Moon. Remember their relationship had crumbled at this point in time. It's real life drama on stage as they continue to deliver incredibly musically. I'm So Afraid is so powerful. It's my favorite Mac song and this is my favorite version to date of it. Amazing!
This band always stood out to me as unique. There was a sound they created not just through the vocals but each instrument. They make you stop and listen. Always thought that but, as usual, you help educate me on the why. I’m beginning to think I deserve college credits from listening to your channel. Thanks.

Lindsey is incredible!
He's incredible WITH Fleetwood Mac. His solo career's not reached them anyway. Then, it should to be considered in the moment our opinions are expressed. Fleetwood Mac is Great as a GROUP, a synergyc Group. By himself LB can be catalogued as a talent, a workaholic talent, a virtuoso if you want, but only with FM he display his talent at higher levels. Don't forget it.
Mick Fleetwood's eyes haunt my DREAMS. Between him, Stevie and Lindsey the band had all kinds of crazy.
I have always thought and said that Lindsey is very underated. Love watching him play.
I've heard another musician say that the reason why Lindsey is so unique (and easy to recognize) is that he plays the guitar more like a banjo.
He definitely does. John Stewart of the Kingston Trio and writer of Daydream Believer, said Lindsey plays banjo lines on some songs. And Stewart should know.

Great review of a great and very underrated guitarist! He's got many fantastic parts worth looking at across 30 or 40 years of material. My favorite is the extended intro that goes into "Monday Morning" from their 1980 live album, Fleetwood Mac Live. Its an amazing showcase of his talent which shows his fusion of rock, country and blues elements. I had a guitar teacher break it down for me when I was first learning guitar 30 years ago, and we both had a great time trading those licks. Check it out! Cheers!

He is also a producer, and if you listen to the layering on their super pop albums it is really masterful. I had a hard time listening to them in their heyday as they were in a music world I wanted nothing to do with, but as time separates them from context, I find them more and more interesting, and despite the gloss, they could be pretty ferocious..
Phil again listening to your explanations and observations are so well described, and you rarely repeat yourself. And it's great to hear someone like you who can appreciate shredders and can appreciate like the opposite of shredders with like Lindsey's melodic simple and emotionally felt solos, and for you to be able to verbalized both extremes is respectable and without me trying to repeat myself, lol

Fleetwood Mac, I feel like I grew up with them. Everybody liked (loved) this band. Favorite Lindsey Buckingham song "Bleed to Love Her". There is a video here on UA-cam from perhaps 2014 where Lindsey does an interview at USC (that "Tusk" USC connection was setup by Mick Fleetwood). Well, at the middle of the interview Lindsey plays/sings "Bleed to Love Her, very beautiful song. Thanks Fil

Couldn't agree more about Lindsey being underrated, as much as I love Peter Green Lindsey is a great guitarist as well. There's a clip of Fleetwood Mac doing Rhiannon in 1976 that perfectly illustrates all the points you made (and with better sound quality :p). There's another great solo from Lindsey, superb bass and a fantastic vocal performance from Stevie channelling her inner Janis Joplin at the end. Another great analysis Fil! I have always loved Lindsey Buckingham's playing and Fleetwood Mac. He is a very under rated player. My husband always laughs at me but is proud at the same time for me having a good ear. I guess I just absorbed a lot with listening to him for 30 years play guitar. I guess there's not a lot of women out there that love listening to guitar like I do. lol

Love Stevie's English Barrister wig hairstyle. I was not a huge fan of this version of the band but recognize the talents involved. I am more a Peter Green/Jeremy Spencer/Danny Kirwin era guy. Great analysis Fil. As usual.

Nice to hear you mention the bassline. Songs like this support, what I have always believed. You don't have to be a virtuoso on the bass to stand out and create a memorable perfomance . Nice melodic bass lines and catchy bass hooks will stay with the audience for a long time. It doesn't matter how simple the part. Paul McCartney was the master of melodic bass line. The two bass players for The Pretenders were good examples of hook masters. There are a handful of Pretenders songs, where you can instantly recognize the song, just by the bass hook. I call bass players like that, "scene stealers". The band is saying, "Hey man, that sounds pretty good. Play that part again. It goes good with the melody". Meanwhile, the bass player is thinking, "You're damn right it does! Fools! I just stole your stupid little song about your boring ex-girlfriend. Now my plans are complete. Muahahaha!"

The ability to express the feeling of each note is all within the aspect of timing. And whether it is comedy, acting, or playing music timing is absolutely everything but the sad truth is it cannot be taught it has to be something you are born with. My sister used to play the piano and though she could technically play each note, as it was written, you would recognize the song but because she didn't have the innate sense of timing every tune she played sounded totally wooden. Great speakers are also experts in timing because they just don't talk words they will punch out a word to give it some power while carrying others for maximum sentimental effect. They will use their voices in a similar fashion to singers in that they will lower their voices to impress upon you a feeling of intimacy pulling you in by making you feel that the message is just for you. Then, after a pause they will slowly begin to raise their voices until, in the end, they are belting out a phrase declaring that the whole world deserves to know; again just like a great singer who will carry a note to project the feeling they are trying to portray on to their audience. I don't know if you have heard Martin Luther King's speech I have a Dream but check it out because it is, in the vein that I am talking, probably the greatest speech (politics aside) ever given. If you listen you can hear the old Gospel music as he speaks it is quite amazing. Lastly, if you listen very carefully you will notice that very happy people also have a sing-song quality to their voices; it is easily recognizable in 4 and 5-year-olds when they are happily chirping away with their chipmunk voices.

One of my all-time favorite songs!
The thing that rubs me the wrong way about Fleetwood Mac is the fact that when they were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, everyone who ever set foot in that band was acknowledged except Bob Welch. He and Chris held that band together for several years.
He's so subtle in his singing and playing that if you blew on him he'd vanish. Yet the songs were so strong.
Hypnotized is a masterpiece. The acoustic guitar in the back, the jazzy electric guitar, and that thumping drum beginning. Those drums start and you know something's going to happen but you don't know when. It's sort of chilling in a way. Then out of nowhere the guitar comes in.
Like Blue Sunday by The Doors, C'est La Vie by ELP, Take Five by Dave Brubeck, Hypnotized is subtlety at it's finest.
Listen to those four songs in a row and see if you can stay in a bad mood.

The first 2 albums with Lindsay & Stevie are brilliant.
His solo at the end of "I'm So Afraid" would have been a great example of Buckingham's work. Any good quality bootleg video from their 2014-2015 tour would do, when he was really on fire doing that song.

I saw FM in Montreal a few years ago and Christine McVie wasn't there unfortunately, however, it gave Lindsay more time to shine and he did.
There are so few 5 tool players in any form of music. Songwriter, singer, guitar master, studio engineer, and overall captivating entertainer. He is one of the best, most underrated musicians in all of music. Glad he is finally getting some recognition.
