- You can make your own rain barrel system for under $90. The rain barrel systems that you see in stores run $180-$200+, and some of the barrels run over $90 (without the hardware you need to hook it up). In this video, I review the materials that you need and provide clear instructions on how to make a 64 Gallon Rain Barrel System.
The DIY Rain Barrel Diverter Kit that I found comes with almost everything you need, including the spigot. Plus, the kit has a built overflow system that directs the extra water out of your existing downspout.
Winterizing your rain barrel system is something to think about before you begin. The kit includes a plug that you insert into your downspout before winter. The spigot and drain ports make it easy to drain your barrel..

I've been using 55 gallon drums for this. food grade blue plastic easily found and in my case free. but access inside is a problem for hooking things up, this makes it easy. I'm rethinking.😁
Was just getting ready to compliment you on knowing how to apply pipe tape, and as I committed finger to keypad, YOU DROPPED THE SPOOL!!! Ha! Oh well! Great job on this project! I hope your dog is cone-of-shame free by now!
Haha. Thank you. Yes she is free and happy to be rid of the cone.
Very helpful video! I'm on the verge of beginning this project and deciding on materials. Your demo is now about 1 year old. Can you comment on how it has worked for you, and also if there is anything you would have done differently. (?)
This year, I did make a few tweaks and made an update video that you can check out with this link: Carly Tackles...Rain Barrel System UPDATE!

Marine grade is the very best silicone to use. HOWEVER, it can take 3 weeks to cure!
Silicone for gutters can work too.
Great video and explained very well! If you are only making 1 barrel then you wouldn’t do any of the holes on the bottom right? It would just be adding the adaptor to the drainage thing and then the spigot right?
Thank you so much and you are correct. One barrel would just need the input near the top and the spigot.
@@carlytackles thanks!
best video !on my olive barrell im going to drill down 5in and then drill down 5 in on my down spout is this correct ,thanks
You want the hole in your down spout to be level with your hole in your barrel. Setup the barrel how you want, i.e. on blocks, and make sure the two holes are at the same height.
Great video. (Cut the music)
Thanks for the feedback
I had a water barrel (not as elaborate as yours) but the water got scuzzy from the asphalt shingle roof and I didn't think it was safe to use on garden plants. Do you have a metal roof?
@KM Writes. You bring up a very good point. I also have asphalt shingles and from what I have found online even metal roofs can have some pollutants that go into the water. I will not be applying the water to leaves or vegetables directly, which seemed to be the main concern. Instead I am applying the water to the soil via soaker hose. I found a few research articles that say this application method is low risk.
@@carlytackles Seems like a good way to apply the water. Thanks for the thoughtful reply.
How much of the water coming down the downspout is diverted into the rain barrels
I can’t really say. The piece that sticks in the gutter fits snug to every side of the gutter and then has a hole in the middle for overflow. I would say that it catches quite a bit of the water going through the gutter.
Great video. Do you find that simple diverter does a good job at still letting any leaves or shingle gravel to flow down the downspout or does it get clogged some times.
Thanks
I haven’t had a clog, but i have seen some debris get into the first tank.
@@carlytackles any suggestions on how to eliminate the debris getting into the tank. Do you winterize your tank at all. Do you have to remove the diverter in the winter?
For winter, I completely wash out the tubs and take them down. It gets too cold where I live not to do that. There is a plug for the gutter that comes with the kit.
I take out the gutter adapter, replace with plug. I empty my tanks, give them a good cleaning and disassemble my hoses.
At the moment, I do not have a idea how to prevent debris, it hasn’t been a problem enough for me to attempt to address it.
The video is blacked out????
Try refreshing your window and see if it plays
There is no water to waist
my water flows slow
If you need more water pressure you can try adding a utility pump.
I gave you a thumbs down becuz you were talking too much...gotta get to the point
Fair enough. Thanks for the feedback.
