- Here it is! The epic battle between two networks and, more specifically, two men - Gabe Kaplan and Robert Conrad. This is my absolute favorite moment from "Battle of the Network Stars".

I remember this so well. Gabe Kaplan winning was an upset & I think it was just desserts for Robert Conrad!!! Thanks Dave for bringing back that fun memory from a simpler time!! 👍👍
It was no upset, Gabe was younger, taller and ran track. The race was already stacked in his favor. Conrad had no idea what he was getting himself into. The only thing he had was his bravado and brute strength.

Kaplan had run track in high school as I recall. Conrad's legs turned into lead and Kaplan glided past maintaining consistent speed. I think Conrad smoked cigs too.

I remember watching this when it was on in 1980. I'll be honest and thought Conrad would win. Just looking at the 2 of them it certainly appeared Gabe wasn't in as good a shape as Conrad. But Conrad was SMOKED by Gabe and it was beautiful. A lot of young people probably aren't aware that Robert Conrad had a bad reputation for his on set and behind the scene hissy fits. Many regarded him as a bully. But Gabe Kaplan really made him look foolish and I think even those on Conrad's team were happy to see him eat crow.

There was a great article written by Kaplan a few years ago where I believe he said that he and Conrad met late in Conrad’s life and he was still resentful of Kaplan for this.
Probably. Conrad's image was of a great athlete and tough guy. Conrad had a reputation for having a few drinks and throwing punches in his younger days. Kaplan's image was of a wise cracking comedian who didn't know what a gym looked like. In reality Kaplan was a very good athlete in high school and a degen gambler who prolly cleaned up on the side bets when he won this race. Conrad was allegedly toasted that day and wanted to mix it up with the producer? So they let him have this race against Kaplan. Who knows? It's TV so everything is scripted.
@@PoppysGuitar Great post. I never thought of Kaplan and the gambling angle. I wouldn’t doubt there was something to that. Of course Conrad likely being a chain smoker might have played a part All I know is this was one TV moment from my youth that never went away from my memory even though I didn’t see it again for many years.
@@kevinleep2488 will always be a great long lasting memory of mine too. I also remember being shocked that Conrad was a smoker.

I watched this a couple of times. Conrad started strong but slowed. I dont know if it was because he knew he started too hard or if he just couldnt hang. Watch closely and when they are next to each other he slows just a hair before giving up. This may have been a set up from the start.

Looking at this again I’m wondering if Bob Conrad was actually trying to create some drama for the contest…which he did. My first impression was that he was an overly intense competitor but now I’m starting to wonder.

I remember this. I liked Robert Conrad until that moment. Wild, Wild, West, Baa, Baa, Blacksheep were favorites but back then we couldn’t stand a sore loser. Now, it’s just what people do automatically.
I remember actually watching this episode. My dad and I laughed so hard when we saw "Mr. Kotter" crush Robert "D-bag" Conrad.🤣
Robert was so winded, he forgot ABC won instead of NBC.

Yes. His team was penalized for breaking the rules. Conrad being a jerk.
Just so everyone understands there were side bets all over the place on this stuff which may explain why Conrad was being a jerk.

Gabe not only won but he smoked him.
Savalas puffin that weed was absolutely outstanding, and Kaplan is featured in the pamphlet of famous Jewish sports heroes first mentioned in Airplane, he's still a source of pride in our community ;)

Surprised Robert Conrad lost because even 10 years older than Kaplan , he has always had a lot of stamina and better physical shape than Kotter being a professional stuntman.
I was surprised that he lost as well.

No plug-in. I overlay the retro TV image with a transparent section for the screen on top of the video and then use ScreenPal to capture the video.
Conrad's a hot head
I've always loved the competitors who are great athletes and just didn't LOOK like they were. Gabe Kaplan's definitely on that list from his blowout of Robert Conrad, and he always will be.

This was a great moment in TV reality shows. From what I read either this was a set up by Gabe and Conrad and there was money to be made on side bets or Conrad was an over confident boob. I think the latter. Many people did not know that Kaplan was a very good athlete, (track and baseball?). Allegedly Conrad was lit that day (not unusual) and in addition he had no idea how good Gabe was. Now Gabe was 10 years younger than Conrad and Conrad had various injuries from his stunt work but the fact was everyone thought that Conrad who was a self proclaimed athlete? would win. Conrad starts the race and takes the lead but Kaplan finds his stride and easily beats Conrad. LOL I don't think Conrad ever lived this down. Mind you this is TV and everything is scripted but I think the race itself is real and Conrad really lost. Why Conrad was so stupid to race a guy ten years younger only Conrad knows. Hubris? As a side note Kaplan left Hollywood to take up Poker in Vegas. Something of a degen gambler, he was a very good poker player and commentator. Oddly enough Conrad, from the south side of Chicago, claimed to be good friends with Tony Spilotro the character, "Nicky" was based on from the movie "Casino".

Actually Kaplan was is very tall. Around 6'3". By the way I miss Howard Cosell. People said he was a jerk but I don't think so. I think he was great.
@@PoppysGuitar Kaplan is 5'11. Conrad 5'4". Kaplan was a high school athlete and 10 years younger. It was fun to watch.
@@tranzco1173 That's interesting bc Howard Cosell is was 6' 1 1/2" and said he was 6' 2" Look at Howard and Ali in interviews and Ali is was 6'3" and he and Ali are very close in height. Now look at Gabe and Howard in the video and Gabe is easily an inch taller than Cosell. Gabe was a very tall 5' 11" if you are correct. Now I have seen a much older Gabe in Vegas. I would say now with age he might be 6 foot.

Conrad falk always liked to show himself as a loser. he likes to show off. He lost that race and he asked for it. he wanted to race against kaplan and I honestly thought conrad falk would bet kaplan. but he lost.
