OH MY GAWWWD I AM EDITING MY VIDEO FOR THIS FRIDAY USING THESE TIPS AND I FINALLY HAVE THE BEST SOUND I’VE EVER HAD IN MY 4 YEARS ON UA-cam!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOUUUUUUUU
Been a fan of your channel for some time and I would say it even inspired me to create my channel, and its an honor to have been able to help you out! Super stoked!! and Im looking forward to seeing your next video, Ride safe Doodle !
Thank God I found this video. Finally got my Zoom H1N and experimented a lot with the device without the external mic. Ended up putting it in my jean pocket. Still able to get a descent sound but will definitely try an external mic after this.
Tim your videos always blow my mind you are such a good youTuber. You always have such cinimatic videos . Great advice here .This is why I do voice overs mostly sound has been my most challenging .
Thanks Kev! I had a lot of fun making this one. Always looking forward to your videos as well! Voice overs are still good because they sound more polished.
@@TryItWithTim Do you think it is the mic being overloaded or did it clip the recorder? I'm having trouble finding a mic that can handle the high spl of my Ducati and wind.
It’s a combination of things. I find that mic placement is important make sure it’s pointed towards your mouth. For the mic volume on the recorder I find that between 5-7 gives me good audio. When your speaking, speak in normal voice that you set the audio at. Sometimes since it’s loud I tend to yell into the mic and then it clips. Lastly I would recommend a better mic. The current mic I have requires a small battery but the quality is great. I would suggest unidirectional mic over an omnidirectional. Also make sure your using the dead cat windscreen on the mic.
Not one comment about the F430 on the street from about 8:00 to 8:18. I know this is a moto vid but I'm guess I'm the only Car/Moto hybrid thats been here, haha! Anyway, I appreciated the Final Cut tips at the end. I had no idea you could do that with the clips/audio. Thanks!
@@TryItWithTim Hey Tim, voice for just my own personal vlogging. I thought I would go for a relatively low cost start up with a GoPro 5 on my helmet. Now I find out to use an external mic, to get better sound, I need to get a GoPro external mic adapter. The $50 is a bit of a pain...but the thing is HUGE, Comparatively speaking to the Hero 5.
Nice, I use to have that set up as well with the adaptor and then you need to get a special cage to house the go pro and adapter. You can also just use double sided adhesive to stick adaptor to helmet. The adaptor is good if you want convenience, you won’t have to worry about syncing your audio just hit record. The H1N recorder is good because it lets you dial in your settings but at the same time takes a little extra time to sync, but also your helmet won’t be so bulky. You can also use the recorder to capture engine noise and other things. I have a GoPro 8 as my main and the great thing about that is there is a media mod accessory that allows you to plug in a 3.5 mm directly into it.
Hey! I have a question, generally, on long rides we keep GoPro turning off and on according to the scenery or need... so what do you do in a situation like this? do you keep the audio recorder turned on and record the whole time riding or do you keep the recorder turned off and on?
Great question ! I’ve run into this issue and the last long trip this is what I did. I left the recorder running and Once it got scenic I would start recording with the gopro. I would then open and close my helmet visor to give me a good sound to sync to. The other alternative would be to turn the audio recorder on and record same time as gopro but that takes more moving around. But using the visor as a syncing sound worked out. Hope this helps
Try It With Tim what a gent! Instant response. Just got an H1n recently for making some private memories in the mountains. Took it out today and found it was making decent amounts of clicking. The rest of the audio sounded great! Might try your wind sock suggestion next then. Can that noise be removed post production? Very new tj this so I think you for taking the time to read and reply 🙏🏻 peace and respect from Scotland 🏴
@@Invis_Space Haha thanks! The gain setting is important, make sure whatever your recording does not peak over -12. Also for wind try the low cut setting. The wind sock helps a lot. For vlogging I set my gain between 3-4. And ambient stuff in the forest can be higher. As far as removing the clicks, There may be a way but it reduces the quality overall, if I find the link to the video that explains it I’ll link it for you. What were you recording ?
Good video-thank you. I just bought a zoom h1n. I've been experimenting but my voice still sounds "jumpy" to me. I have used the same settings you're using and I have found the best placement is clipped on the front inside the helmet pretty much in front of my mouth. I sound "nervous" like my voice is jumpy. To me, it doesn't even sound like me at times. It's weird.
Nice i need to try that location! As for the jumpy voice it could be the vibrations from the bike or the wind coming in. Also try annunciating more and exaggerating your mouth movements and lips when you speak in the helmet. I find that this helps because if you speak normal all the vibrations and wind can give it that buzzy sound. So “say it with your chest” lol
Very nice audio setup! I've been simply using the built in Hero 8 mic so far and its working well for me but I'm going to play around with my lav mic and a recorder to see if I can improve it at all. Your setup rocks.
Thank you! You record your voice with just the built in mic? You must have to scream through the helmet? Also for the GoPro 8., check out the Media Mod.
Yes it could have also been the Mic as well. Since I made this video, I picked up a new microphone. The purple panda, and it seems to sound a lot better.
Tim, one more question for you.....when I am on a long ride, and I am shooting many short clips, how do I synch? I can see if I am taking one ride, and shooting one clip, the hand clap works great....but when I have lots of clips of video and sound? Do you have any tips that might help?
It takes some experimenting to find the right location. But generally I place the microphone between the cheek pad and shell of the helmet (left or right side) angled towards my mouth. Most the microphone is stuffed in the cheek pad to protect from wind noise. Depending if you have an omnidiretional mic or unidirectional mic, make sure the part that captures audio is facing your mouth.
@@TryItWithTim thx;) interesting... because I would say the microphone inside the helmet will be too weak to catch the sound of the exhaust. I wonder if, for example, a double microphone would work, one in the helmet to catch voice and the other somewhere near the exhaust. Have you tryied ?
I am thinking more and more about your solution, but just about the double microphone ... and after a year do you still think that this is the best way. zoom + microphone? do you have something else now ?;) my first movie from the tour is on the GoPro microphone .... quality of course, you know how;) tragic. ua-cam.com/video/KtqyjsGWGws/v-deo.html
@@ntonio1 Yea the zoom and microphone is my go to solution and rarely fails. There are always going to be better recorders you can purchase and also the microphone matters. I find a unidirectional microphone sounds the cleanest for voice compared to an omnidirectional. I think it would be too much work to run a double mic through one recorder. I think at the end of the day you either try to capture your voice well and if you want engine noise, record it separate. The motorcycle youtubers with the best sounding engine noise are capturing that separately. The next upgraded recorder would be the zoom h4n (great for exhaust recording)
Hi Tim, can I ask a question, I have the zoom 1hn same as you, how do you get the audio files from the sd card onto a MacBook or iPad Pro? My lightening cable only works for pictures and videos, any help would be most appreciated.. cheers
Hi Podge, of course! I have a MacBook Pro and I use a dongle to download the files off the SD card directly. I got this cool adaptor off Amazon that allows you to plug in multiple USB ports and both mini and regular size sd cards. The dongle adaptor plugs in the lightning port

I will be using a Go Pro Hero 7 black that I plan on mounting under the chin. Do you have any issues with starting the GP while you are moving? Thanks so much-liked and subscribed.
Hello and thank you. If I am recording with the zoom, then I like to start my GoPro and Recorder before I get on the bike, and sync it with 2-3 handclaps (edit out afterwards). No issues starting the GoPro while moving, sometimes its hard to feel the button with your glove. My GoPro is set so when its turned off, I press record button once, it turns on and starts recording automatically. Best of luck with your setup :)
@@TryItWithTim Tim, thanks so much for your response. This video is so well done and easy to understand. One more question: Wouldn't it be much simpler to simply record the video, take out the ambient road noise, and add narration to your video in post production? This would eliminate a speaker wire, audio recorder, and having to synch? I am a noobie and use iMovie to process my videos. Do you ever just use voice over? Really interested in your opinions.
