I wish there was a local judo club that allowed me to learn both the traditional expanded curriculum and sport judo.

It's unfortunate that Sport Judo takes so much away. They basically took the Brazilian Ju Jitsu that the Gracie's took out of Judo out of Judo. Thanks for the explanation tho. I practice BJJ (Just a white belt) and besides some of the take downs and arm bars we do I don't see how Judo was the foundation of BJJ but after listening to how the sports side came in and drastically changed a martial art to a sport it makes more sense that it morphed into something much different. Still a very cool martial art. I LOVE seeing judo techniques in MMA. A perfect executed throw is a sight to behold.

It's a fine suggestion, but I'm afraid after over 60 years of modifying and refining my techniques so that they work for me, I no longer remember the way I learned the throws as a youngster. Probably the best idea is to watch the old videos of Kyuzo Mifune. Fortunately, many of his throw demonstrations are available on UA-cam.

There are schools... most will also teach traditional Jujitsu( Daito Ryu Aiki jujitsu). I was in Shotokan as a kid 9-12, I boxed from 13-15... and I studied and competed in Judo from 14-18. It was a traditional jujitsu school. So I also studied jujitsu(traditional)... we sparred every other week( chest protectors, shin guards and boxing gloves). Look up full contact jujitsu... tournaments comprise of striking and judo-jujitsu takedowns... its big in Europe.

I think you can do judo at any age, so long as you are healthy enough to participate in any rigorous sport. It is important to really learn falling (ukemi) techniques at the beginning, and pace yourself while you are developing stamina. Feel free to modify techniques if they cause physical problems due to arthritis or stiff joints (after asking the teacher for suggestions). And remember to breath!

@@SeiryokuZenyo Sir,Don't u think that being Thrown can have impact on a person depending on their age.
I was just 31 when a Very Careless guy Jumped on to my chest after a PRACTICE THROW(not Randori...amd Hiw while weight was pointed through his shoulder into me) and My Collar bone got departed completely from my Scapula...I had to undergo Surgery and Rehab. A complete year was wasted and now that shoulder is weak permanently(while it used to be my strongest part) as Ligaments were torn..and they are very difficult to heal. I even have A Mersilene tape and Endobutton placed to replace one of the ligament(CC ligament) and AC ligament Reconstructed. So, now I still fear ,after 4 years, getting hit at that point..let alone being thrown in that joint. Judo is gone.
      Could u suggest something!!
Is it possible to still train and learn new techniques..maybe in my own?
      Thanks 🙏

@@freespirit7328 A dangerous or careless practitioner can hurt you at any age. It is tragic that your instructor did not spot the potential danger your partner posed early on and do something to prevent it. That kind of accident is unforgivable in my book, and should never have happened.
As one gets older (over 60), bones do get more brittle and fractures can occur from a bad fall, but if proper breakfalling is emphasized early on, by that age, it should not happen. And most practitioners of that age are not doing aggressive uncontrolled randori.
Even with fairly serious long term injuries, one can still learn and practice kata, so that would be my recommendation. Kata should always be safe and controlled, but you would still be doing judo, applying judo principals, learning a wide variety of new techniques and getting good exercise, which ultimately should help rebuild some of your lost strength.
