20 years ago I had a friend who harbored a friend of hers who left the church of Scientology. The woman was 20 or 21 years old, an adult, whose parents raised her in the religion. The church essentially sent thugs to track her down and take her to a rehabilitation camp. These huge intimidating guys showed up at my friend's door repeatedly, telling her they know she was lying, sitting out in the parking lot of her condo, etc. She finally answered the door one day with her 9mm in hand and told them to never, ever come back or they and the church would be part of a massive news story. Her friend running from the church was scared, didn't want her to call the cops because that would start a trail and the church would know where she was. That's how bad things can get.
This isn't sudden. The press didn't reveal this. Her book came out in 2013 and I've been very frustrated that nobody has taken it seriously. She waited 10 years for people to say "wow, she's telling the truth."

@@marquitaarmstrong399I don’t think the religions you mention brainwash people. A friend got involved with Scientology he totally changed in a short time like over a few months, he wasn’t the same person everyone was beneath him. It ruined his marriage he ended up getting away from them but had ongoing problems for sometime.
@@marquitaarmstrong399 Mormons are very similar to scientology. Catholics are not, for starters, there's NO mystery beliefs Catholic church holds that are hidden from anyone but the highest members. They're just regular religion with their own issues they're SLOWLY sorting out (reformation helped), you don't have to pay anything at all, you don't work 90 hour weeks for them, they don't control your personal life (ideally, we need to fight to keep religious figures AND the government out of our bedrooms)... also imagine Catholics forcing someone to do abortions, this is like the opposite.
The more fundamental issue is this: nearly anyone can found a church using any belief system as its basis of worship, *no matter how absurd, irrational or unsupported by evidence that belief system is*. For example, imagine that I woke up 1 day & started telling everyone that I'd been given a startling revelation in a dream -- that the entire universe, all life on Earth & our human existence was made possible by an enormous, floating monster that appeared as a giant mass of spaghetti w/ noodles for tentacles & 2 gargantuan meatballs for eyes ... that this flying monster of spaghetti was in fact the most powerful being in existence as well as the creator of all things ... that the Flying Spaghetti Monster carefully hid His presence & existence from all human powers of perception & scientific instrumentation except in the cases of a very select few people He chose to be His holy prophets ... that the Flying Spaghetti Monster promised an eternity of unending joy & pleasure to His loyal worshippers in an afterlife that included an inexhaustible Beer Volcano attended by immortal strippers ... & that it was His divine will that I & others take our knowledge & use it to establish & expand a church dedicated to spreading the truth about His Divine, Saucy Goodness via a written Gospel "inspired" by the invisible touch of His Noodly Appendage. If you or anyone else were to argue (quite reasonably) that such a belief system is so absurd as to be preposterous for a basis of worship, that begs the question: by what reason can we legally disqualify the founding of this "Church of The Flying Spaghetti Monster" if there are other established religions & churches whose doctrines also contain utter absurdities? What makes 1 religious absurdity less or more "legit" in the eyes of the law when it comes to who gets to claim legal status as a church or other religious organization vs. who does not? Because, when it comes right down to it, *all religious claims boil down to "this is true because I say it is true" either with or without the accompaniment of religious texts*. As American author Robert A. Heinlein once wrote, theology is the 1 area of academic study that does not require a subject to point to -- unlike every other field of research, whether it be zoology, geology, astronomy etc. To go even further, theology is apparently the only field in which logical absurdities are not merely tolerated, they are regularly & continually defended as "a matter of faith" ... something that would NEVER fly in any other academic field, even in subjects such as theoretical physics where scientific evidence is relatively sparse & incredibly difficult to obtain. To paraphrase Sam Harris ... if you were to claim that speaking a magical incantation over your pancakes turns them into the body of Elvis Presley, you're clearly a liar or a lunatic -- but if on the other hand you profess a belief that chanting some Latin words over a cracker & some wine turns them into the flesh & blood of Jesus Christ, then you're just a Catholic.
I'm particularly struck by her explanation of how hard it is for the members who are fully invested in this indoctrination to leave. To experience their world crumbling down around them is similar to how all cult members or religious people might feel after leaving. You try to avoid it. It happened to me when I discarded my religious indoctrination too. But because it's hard to do, I don't expect anyone reading this to leave or a mass exodus from cults or religions. But if you do, you're free from it. You can shed its flaws. You can live. Free at last.
They aren’t allowed to read anything on the internet about the church in case it influences them in a negative way regarding the church! So no, no Scientologist will read your comment 😢

Just to clear up a confusion: the "occult" deals with supernatural beliefs, and communication with the deceased. Also used to describe the practices of Wicca, such as casting spells, etc. There are many ways of joining the occult, but it's not one single group. A "cult" is a group of people living under the tyranny of one high leader who makes unreasonable demands, and the members will do or sacrifice ANYTHING for that leader.
God bless this couple and their tremendous bravery. This "church" has recruitment offices in my former home city in the San Francisco bay area, and most of us kids growing up would skate or bike past this scientology building and see the theta testers or whatever they are, and we saw this whole thing as absolutely absurd. This is not a church! It bothers me so much that it's called that.
Well said
Hubbard sais : if we want money , let’s make Scientology a church ! He was not wrong , for once !
It's not Ny worse than a Christian church. Both all bull, and neither are proven. So, don't go there...
How is it not a "church"? "Church" just means congregation or "community of believers".

He loved his kids and would never expose them to any hurt...my uncle is one of many who suddenly committed suicide while trying to get out of this horrible cult. These are dangerous people
Truly sorry for your loss..That cult must be behind his sudden 'suicide' and him leaving nothing for his family..They must be made to pay for their exploitation crime.
I am sorry for your and your family's loss.
Thanks for speaking the truth Jenna!
Very brave girl. The world needs more voices like her. Speak up n call these fears out !!??
Jenna Miscavige co-wrote a book, Beyond Belief, back in 2013.
She asked what was the difference between a cult and Scientology and the answer is several billion dollars.
@@joanthompson5606 both wacky
I think you meant to say "a cult" and not "an occult".
this cult needs to be investigated, and take very serious. we have this cult all over the world is very sick.
the honesty is in her eyes😢. so sad. God be with her
God bless this couple and their tremendous bravery. This "church" has recruitment offices in my former home city in the San Francisco bay area, and most of us kids growing up would skate or bike past this scientology building and see the theta testers or whatever they are, and we saw this whole thing as absolutely absurd. Later in life I begin to see horrific stories on the internet about people breaking free, and losing everything, their homes, their jobs, everything. A billion year contract? There should be laws to protect people in America from such contracts. It's ridiculous. May these 2 live a long and healthy life with their babies, in the free world.... may their minds be purified of all that nonsense.
I read a lot of L.Ron Hubbard sci-fi when I was a teen in the 80s. I enjoyed them. I only found out about the church much later on in life. One of his own lines on religion always stuck with me... "the best way to get rich is to start a religion" (or words to that effect)... That just makes me take the whole thing as a scam.
Miscaviage is NOT the founder, he is just the creepy guru that took over at some point.
Thank you for covering this!
