I can watch videos about fishing, how to fish a certain lure a certain way until the end of time. This is hands down some of the best 25 minutes I've spent listening to a professional angler who has seen the change of time, technology, and lures and still applies the basics with intuitive information and essentially rational thinking. Great interview with Rick Clunn. Nice work John.
My old next door neighbor Richard Slussenger use to be a salesman for a oilfield company in Houston, he told me he'd fish with Rick on Conroe, said Rick was a engineer for schlumberger and quit his job, bought a trailer and a Jon Boat and moved on the lake, and started to guide on Conroe and fish tournaments! Richard himself was a very good fisherman and even had fished, more than Rick back then! But he told me he didn't have the sack that Rick did! to move his family out to Conroe and follow his dreams! Like Rick! I think he always regretted!! told me that Rick Glunn was the most natural and knowledgeable Bass Fisherman of all the Professional Bass Fisherman on the tour! I also believe in his ability to access a situation on the water and put to his advantage is what makes a great fisherman and tough competitor!! Great interview with a Bass Pro legend! Thanks Byrne
Jonny, youve taken things to another level....thanks for Rick Clunn interview, dont know how you pinned him down but totally awesome.
Wow, Johnny this was your best Vid ever. Rick Clunn is the master of fishing study
Nothing but respect for Rick Clunn - A true legend in every sense of the word. Great video.
One of the most important lessons I have learned in my bass fishing life was from a Bassmaster article , long ago , with Rick Clunn teaching that lures are tools and pick the right tool for the job . That has stuck with me all these years . Excellent channel you have created .
As usual, another awesome video. No click-bait, no screwing around peddling lures or gear, just exceptional information that helps me be a better fisherman presented in a concise, digestible presentation. Awesome job and huge thanks to Rick for sharing.
Rick Clunn is absolutely one of my all-time favorites thank you for having him on your show.
Absolutely fantastic. Clunn is the greatest tournament angler of all time. What wisdom and humility! The more Clunn, the better.
This is solid gold! Thanks to Mr. Clunn for his wisdom and thanks Jonny for arranging yet another information rich presentation.
Absolutely legendary, and such clarity in explaining! He understands most everything that is hidden in plain sight which is crazy 🤯
When I first found you on UA-cam I thought this young man has something very special about him . Seeing Rick with you and the way he reacted with you proves that my fillings about you where rite . It's hard for me to buy in to some of the things young guy say and do . I love bass fishing and always want to stay competitive so I always look for ways are techniques to improve myself . In short thanks for what you do and for putting it out there for others . Keep up the hard work and I hope for great things for you in the future .
Honored to have first comment to say hello Rick! You’re a legend. And still one on the best sticks on the water! Take care.
Hey, Rick! The more I watch your videos. The more I realize the amount of learned knowledge you have on Bass fishing. I understand every word of it. I could listen and ask questions all day and night about bass fishing. Thanks to the young man for recording you Rick. Or we would lose alot of good info on bass fishing. I seen on your wall about still playing when you get old. I am 60 now. But I still love to fish and find new places to fish and the different ponds and areas to find bass. The different speeds that each bass likes to trigger the strike vs the right lure during the temp, wind and the amount of sun. Then what time of day. The science of bass fishing is what keeps me playing and fishing. Good for you Rick Clunn! Keep going! I will continue to watch and learn as I get older too. Shawn.
Rick is an absolute bass fishing genius. He has been my favorite angler since the mid 70s. GOAT
Jonny, you a very fortunate young man to have Rick Clunn as a friend and mentor. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Hands Down! Jonny’s Fish the Moment is the Best, most detailed and interesting angling information out there. Love to sit back and learn and listen to this in-depth topic with The Jedi Master Clunn and Young Master Jedi Schlutz (and Master Jedi Blaukat). Thank You All for all you do 🙏🏾👌🏾👍🏾🎣
Johnny is amazingly wise beyond his years , but knowing, conversing and trading ideas with such a legend as Rick Clunn.... he is only getting wiser. Thanks for bringing us these informative videos.
Great interview. Rick is such a class act. Love his perspectives. I remember that pine bluff classic. Everyone was just dumbfounded at the fish he caught
I first met Rick Clun in about '88 on Lake Meade (Nevada). In '91, I moved to Montgomery, TX (where he lived) and regularly ran into him at the post office, grocery store and around town, but I never was able to just sit down and talk to him. He was one of my biggest heroes, and I couldn't approach him and start a conversation beyond, "How you doing, Rick?"
I don't think people who fish and talk about "patterns" realize that Rick Clunn was the first person to keep meticulous notes pertaining to conditions that prevailed where and while he was fishing. Nor do I think anyone before him invested as much time and thought into their gear and preparation to fish. Between his attention to detail and preparation, it has never been a surprise to me that Rick Clunn was so incredibley successful on the bass tournament circuits.
On the lighter side, I recall a video Rick did 40(?) years ago for 3M, narrated by Homer Circle. Rick was fishing a tough day with Al Lindner (In Fisherman) and caught a monster that neither he or Al would call a ten-pounder. (Al kept telling Rick to "Say it, go ahead and say it...") Rick made the mistake of unhooking the fish while it was still over the water and the fish squirmed and got away. If Al Lindner hadn't grabbed Rick by the ankle, he'd have gone completely into the water after that fish.
(6:29-It was Zell Rowland who showed me how to trim the lower lip of the Rebel Pop-R to make it more effective).
Absolutely fantastic video Jonny. I can not imagine the amount of knowledge stored in Rick Clunn's brain. Staggering. You do realize how fortunate you are to. know this man I'm sure, and we are fortunate you are sharing him with us. Can't wait for the next segment! Thanks to the both of you.
Having spent the past 45 minutes watching your 2 videos on Rick Clunn, I find you unearthed a tremendous amount of unknown information. I grant that you have to sift the wheat from the chaff but it is there to be gleaned. I am up in Rick's age bracket and have seen quite a few supposed great baits come through. Spinnerbait was the go to search and destroy bait.Pop'r were next, Spooks not far removed. Rick's ideas of hunting like a lion in Africa analysising the thoughts on this is very true.Keep up the fantastic research which you have put forth in doing these recent Masterpieces. The college boys and modern technology have come so far but as Rick stated it's still predator versus prey.
This is Top Shelf fishing content. It's very cool to hear from Rick Clunn given his generations of experience. Well done.
Rick Clunn is a legend and what a treasure trove of information. Such a pleasure to watch and listen. Great job Rick and thank you for your honesty and willingness to share. And Jonny, this was another home run video man! Keep up the great work!
One of the truest legends of bass fishing and still is adding to it!
These episodes with Rick clunn are filled with knowledge, answering questions I didn’t even know I had
This interview is amazing and straight to the point. I love hearing about how location is more important than a unique lure. It makes me reflect on a few spots where I know there are monster fish during specific times of the year but they don’t hold any resident fish. Thank you for the video
Phenomenal video. I can listen to Mr. Clunn discuss bass fishing and philosophy of the sport for hours.
WOW ! You've arguably the best bass fisherman of all time on. Great to see you on here Rick, I'm a huge fan!
I never commit on videos. This is by far one of the best information session I have seen on UA-cam. Great work!
When Rick Clunn speaks about life or fishing you turn a recorder of some kind on. The stuff he put out in a 1 minute 10 second video about spinner bait fishing years ago, was solid gold for those that caught it. He said a spinner bait with willow leaf blades in the 4 and 5 size aren't a big fish catcher like a Colorado blade unless you use a 6 or 7 willow leaf blade, because they don't displace enough water. When he said that, I immediately went and ordered 6 7 and even number 8 and 9 willow leaf blades they use on musky spinner baits, to put on 3/4 ounce and up spinner baits. They ride lower in the water column and when a 3/4 ounce spinner bait hits a log or limb it has a louder thump when the head hits compared to 1/2 or smaller. I learned that on my own by experimenting with sizes and blade, and trailer combinations. My best spinner bait is a do it mold banana head 3/4 ounce with a silver 7 willow leaf, and a gold Colorado blade, with a white skirt and a chartreuse keitech trailer. I have caught more 4 plus pound fish on that bait then all the other blades combined.
REALLY wanted to shake his hand when he was just at Champlain but figured with Covid I'd show him the added respect of staying clear. But saw a tournament video from the 70s maybe 80s where he was talking about his enjoyment being out in nature and how at times he could use his understanding of what's going on put and around the water to help him catch fish. Been a BIG FAN since. Class act, super intelligent and still heading out on places like Champlain when the winds whipping. Amazing fellow
I know Northern-strain LMB are more likely to chase fast-moving baits and Florida-strain LMB tend to prefer slow-moving baits. That's why deadsticking or soaking your worm can catch big fish in the south.
Long before KVD sold out to Lew's! He was a Champion with Quantum. Rick Clunn was the real G.O.A.T. Rick kicked everyones Ass! Love to see a fish off between Rick and Kevin. Then will will see who's the best of all time! My money is on Rick! Class act all the way! Good luck to you Rick! Don't ever quit! We can learn alot from you! Shawn.
Awesome. just pure awesome the way he breaks everything down. Tell Mr. Clunn I'm one of his biggest fans over here in Japan.
The legend himself! Thanks johnny.. always great to pick the brain of such a legendary angler!
Jonny, thanks for taking your channel to the next level by adding Randy and other pros. You’re channel and the knowledge you drop are fantastic and you’re a natural teacher. I’m bookmarking your tackle warehouse link to make my contribution. Keep the videos coming. 👍🏾
Wow! Thanks for picking Rick’s brain and sharing the video. I’ve been following Bass fishing and Rick since the 70’s and it’s amazing how much he knows and how little I now realize I know. Looking forward to the next video with Rick!
That was an amazing conversation. Predator vs Prey isn't something I often think about but I'll be working on adding that to my mental arsenal. Well done and I'm looking forward to more like this.
Thanks Jonny. You put out a ton of great content, but this is definitely stepping it up a notch. Excellent work!
Thanks Rick for sharing your knowledge with us! God bless you!
Awesome video J. Love me some Ricky clunn, he reminds me so much of my uncle and how he analyzes nature. Crazy to think how long Ricky’s been fishing, I have an old vhs tape of him fishing. I learned a lot about bait retrieval from him.
Wow... a to the point explanation! I totally agree with Rick. It’s the same here in Sweden too and I guess most over the world! Thank You for a great interview 👍🎣🇸🇪
Rick is very wise and modest!
I salute you Sir!
Brooooooo!!!... I met Rick twice. Once on the Potomac and once on the north east.
On the Potomac he was asked for some advice to find fish. He said, "fish the grass".. hysterical 🤣
Such a great video. I really think he's one of the best teachers in the sport.
He has very deep thoughts about nature and fishing...Always great to hear his point of view...!
It is nice to hear Rick's perspective on fishing very informative. Nice video.
Followed Rick for years and Years , Im an an old Fl. Guide and he is rock solid. The Dead Stick Worm hear in Tennessee is killer on the Giants. I use it pre Spawn in 18 feet of water on points by the spawning areas.
This conversation was incredible. Thank you Jonny!
It's so true. I remember I throwing a trap well into August and still catching fish. I would get bites because I would give it big jerks like I was ripping it out of grass (even if I wasn't fishing grass) and fish would just react to it. Went fishing with my dad and he couldn't believe it because the way most people use a trap is just straight reeling it in or Yoyo it.
Awesome! I've been a big Rick Clunn fan all of my life. Lots of good information right there. To add to the bait ball conversation... I feel like the concept of probability also plays into it. The chances of catching a single bait fish is much lower than the chances of catching a couple of bait fish when they rush a cluster of bait fish. The chaos of the bait ball panicking would elevate the chance of success for the predator. Anywho, great video and I'm jealous that you got to sit and pick Mr Clunns brain, he's such a good fisherman.
Awesome vid interview Jonny. So so much information in what Rick said. God bless!
Truly an excellent video interview with a Master. He’s done it and shares his knowledge with us.
Fascinating video, really gets you thinking! Thanks
This family loves Rick Clunn
WOW. So much to digest. Thank you, Mr. Clunn!
A legend and a class act all the way.
Thanks for the video. I'm new to bass fishing and not catching them, lol. This video gave me a few ideas.
Love hearing Rick's analysis. Great stuff.
Wow, I'm impressed! You got the master on your show.
Thank you Jonny for have such a great legend to interview love all your videos take care and keep them coming.🎣👍🏽
Awesome! This is stuff I love about fishing too! Just talk on concept and theory etc.
Go Johnny ....Go Go! Johnny is good!!
I think I need to watch that a few times and take notes. Great nuggets!
WOW! Just WOW Jonny. Thanks.
He is a legend one of the few pro anglers that you can trust what he says and not just trying to sell you there sponsor products
I was in a BASS open on the Harris Chain a decade ago. I witnessed a pro boater “dead sticking” a worm. The pro caught almost 30 pounds. It works.
Somewhere I read, an article written back in the 1950’s, the original “plastic” worms were designed for anglers to simply cast out your worm and let it lay on the bottom. Each angler brought multiple rod/reel combo’s and while sitting in your boat you had four or five rods casted out in all directions. Just like catfishing. You simply waited for a worm to be picked up.
Excellent video, thank you!
Great interview! Thanks JS and Mr. Clunn.
Great video. Rick is a very intelligent angler.
Awesome tips ! Thanks !
Another great video! Great interview with Rick. Keep it up! PS I just ordered your jigs.
I’m 50 I’ve been watching Rick Clunn since he started with the Bass Masters
Great interview. Clunn is a master.
Wow! This was fantastic. Great info from a legend.
Born in 58. Raised outside of Gainesville FL on some smaller sand bottom ponds that got little to no pressure except from my family. I learned to catch bass using a purple Mann's jelly worm. A weedless hook and no weight as the hook had maybe a 1/16 of weight built on it. Ponds were shallow with a hole being 10 ft or so. Natural grass and weeds before the days of hydrilla. Best tactic when fish weren't actively feeding was to heave that worm out in the deepest water and leave it alone. The fish were stocked in these ponds the year I was born by the GFC using Oklawaha strain fingerlings. By the time I was 5 there were 10 lbers being caught as these fish had the perfect situation to get big as the ponds were also connected to the aquifer and had limerock caverns that shared water with these ponds. The ponds are still there but a shadow of their former selves as too many humans now pump on the aquifer and keep it drawn down. So it is possible to grow 2 lbs a year rate if they are living in an aquarium for all intents and purposes. At 7 or 8 my dad caught a 14-5 which was the biggest we ever knew about.
The water was basically clear and I used to watch fish in the deeper water and saw how they reacted to baits. It was as if they were challenging the bait to do something. Nosing up on it just like bed fishing was common and then swimming off and sort of circling the quarry almost as if to see it move or do something. When it didn't it only seemed to raise their curiosity but in a slow mo sorta way. Not always but a fair amount of time they would eventually ease over and suck it in and swim off. Other times it was as if they just lost interest until another fish swam close then that in itself could make them get it as if to say that's mine. Schooling behavior but I can not recall nary a time when these fish schooled on top. So I think it is nothing more than a territorial dispute. Trespassers are not tolerated either instantly or an hour later. Over my lifetime I have caught many fish or what I think is a big bass over the 8 lb size. Most were accidents and pleasant surprises much like the circling wary bass of my childhood.
Best video on UA-cam!
Rick Clunn!! My Spinnerbait guru!!
That was a great video! Thank you for sharing, from the both of you 👍👍
Most impressive video yet a mr Rick clunn wow. Just think we guys had it figured out way before good graphs was out these older pros are great student of the sport , if they had good graphs back in the day no telling how many big bags they would have caught.
Wow Thank you very much , i learned a lot from him , thank you for making him available for us , thanks a lot
The Zinnmaster! Great stuff!
This was fantastic. Thank you both.
Great interview! “A fishermens, fisherman “
I believe the secret lure ideas are basically a sound , vibration or something they are eating or keying in on for certain reasons and times on certain lakes during. Weather water clarity lol
He is great and they better have him in the Hall of Fame
My boat its signing by this legend 👍
This is awesome!! Thanks Jonny!!
Great interview. My pick for the G.O.A.T.
Great video, I grew up watching Clunn dominate, thanks!
Thats some good info i could talk to him all day
For Florida waters when I lived there for a decade, in my experience fishing Florida, that not only because of the heat but because of the Gators and Gars and other major threats in the waters that most Bass in most waters seem to stay hidden in the thick grass and muck and don't strike like you think from fast moving baits, unless it's a considerable meal they don't tend to bite but when ever I Texas rigged a plastic and worked it slow in the muck and would be fish on no problem especially in the rivers and small lakes.
Awesome video man this was really interesting to watch
I learned how to Bass fish by watching ol'VHS tape of Rick Clunn. Great video, and glad to know that he's doing well. Good health, Rick! Hey, Jon, any chance that you'll do a clip on "Tokyo Rig" in the near future?
Fantastic discussion!!
Your my favorite rick my style is copied after yours with my own touch great interview johnny
This guy blows my mind
Buck Perry said "Every fishing success or failure can be directly related to depth and speed'
Dude this is awesome. I’m enjoying it
