Eric Haugen they always appeared simple at first listen but Ribot was/is rather genius, another something you helped me learn here on your channel. Please continue your great work here. Thanks again
Thanks Eric, Rain Dogs was the album that started my fascination with Tom Waits many many years ago. You put a big smile on my face as I learned this on this gloomy Saturday in Melbourne!
I'd fooled around with this tune before, but you were having so much fun playing it I had to try again. Thanks a bunch for the great transcription and explanation.
I'm a metalhead and play some guitar. I'm glad I found your channel. The stuff you play on here is pretty cool. Thanks for opening up my musical interests.
Awesome! I could see how Tom Waits fits in with metal. He's dark, and deals in the grotesque :-) I love classic metal btw - Sabbath, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc.
Thanks so much Mikael! Tom Waits and Marc Ribot are two of my all time faves! Side note - Tom does a great job in the recent acting roles he's taken on. It's so cool to see him in films!
Oh yeah he does! I also find it fascinating how he can make standard chord tones/arpeggios imbued with his attitude. He's got so much spirit - it comes through in every note he plays!
Eric Haugen Exactly. In another one of your Marc videos, you played this scale, and I was like wait, what was that?! It was just a natural G minor scale haha. A good example of that.. Good stuff, and we appreciate your lessons! 😎
Great one!!I don't know who else to ask ,since you do really different styles of guitarists could you do one of Ray Barbee? What scales and chords is he using. What to work on to start off!!Thanks so much!
What's interesting about Slash is that behind the image he's a brilliant musician. All his solos are melodic, memorable, and creative. He plays to the chord changes of the song expertly! And did it all while smashed out of his mind on booze and drugs!
Thanks so much for this and always nailing the Marc Ribot lessons! Also appreciating the newer "shoegaze" shot of your pedals and levels. If you could to a lesson on his "Fat Man Blues" I would be eternally grateful...
Hi Eric, or anyone who can help. I love these Marc Ribot arrangements for Tom Waits/Nick Cave. I have been searching Marc´s music but all I find is really weird stuff that doesn´t sound like your arrangements. Which albums/songs should I listen to?
Start with Tom Waits "Rain Dogs" album. Also the one after: "Big Time" - which is actually a live concert from like 1988 that's streaming on Amazon right now! Marc's solo stuff is really out there - but the stuff he did with Los Cubanos Postizos is more straight ahead groovy cool!
RIbot is a complete original. Nobody else plays like that. And I really like your version of the second verse -- very Waits-ish. The only problem with this is your strings aren't old and rusty!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Thanks Eric, had fun learning this today. I recently saw this clip of Tom Waits with a young Marc Ribot on the tv show 'The Tube'. Really great solo from Ribot. The Tube was an 80s music show here in the UK hosted by Jools Holland. Had some great alternative bands on there at the time. ua-cam.com/video/6sXlTVnORqw/v-deo.html

That's my trusty 90s '52 reissue! And that's a factory installed bigsby - no holes on the back! Plus, the mastery bridge makes it rock solid, tuning wise :-)
Ha! Thanks Walt! I'm a pragmatist at heart - I only discuss as much theory as actually to the piece at hand :-) I think it's very tempting for music teachers to wander off into theoretical jungles - I try to stay on the path.
Eric, I wasn't even talking about theory...Theory, though confusing when delved into at length is quite necessary but I meant just goofing off with nonsense unrelated to the lesson at hand and then showing the audience a run or a basic pentatonic scale, in the last 2 minutes of 10 minutes worth of time that every other video instructor seems to have or has reviewed a gazillion times...It's fresh stuff and definitely different
It would be much easier if you actually count out all the frets you are using for these quick and unusual movements Marc does. Watching someone just play it while talking about how clever it is does not assist much at all. As a guitarist you should know simply watching someone play a song has one coming away with parts and pieces but never the whole piece. You are not Describing what you are doing. That F sharp walk, done two totally different ways with not much by way of describing where you are going is of very litle help. These are not comprehensive tutorials so much as it is a brief mention of the root notes, then executing whole augmented chords progressions while remarking, 'Thats what he does there'.....Does what? Where? From one player to another these are partial tutorials with conversational curios.. Half a lesson may as well be none at all. It just turns into a mess trying to guess what you are doing. If you would just stick to describing Every change instead of just playing, with, 'That's what he does there. I thought i was going to learn this song. The instructions are very incomplete. Thanks.. Yahte kwah tsi yoyenere onkyatenro. That's what we say in Mohawk. Now you say it. (the letters are not spoken the same as in English, but the letters are all there and i have shown you..... the marc ribot lessons are just the best. such an incredible and special guitarist.
Thanks so much, Severin!
Nice work on your channel - btw! I know how much time goes into putting arrangements together - well done, mon freir!
thank eric for the kind words : )
Much respect, brother!
Absolutely agree. I now have another favorite guitarist added to my list....well two, with Eric of course:)
I've been waiting years for someone to cover Ribot and 80's Waits! I've bought two lessons so far. Many more in time I'm sure. Keep it up!
Thanks Rob!
I'm always exploring the skronky brilliance of Ribot - there's so much to discover!
The only channel dedicated to the fine art and wacky guitar of the amazing Ribot! Brilliant, mate! (needless to say, another tab to download).
"..fine art and wacky guitar" - well put, Walter!
really opened my eyes these Marc Ribot lessons and played so well, thank you.
Bloody brilliant. Love me some rain dogs. The guitar playing on that album is some of most creative playing ever. Great lesson as always!
Oh yeah for sure!
That record is absolutely on my top ten desert island discs!
Oh how we danced with the rose of Tralee
You have created some of the finest guitar content on youtube. Thank you.
Thanks so much Sean!
I just try to keep it chill and informative, pbs-style 🧔🏻
You went right for the Apex this time! I was having a crappy morning and you brightened my day. Thank you!
That makes me happy to hear!
It's gonna be raining all week here in NC, so it seemed rather timely to release this vid :-)
J'ai découvert cette chanson grâce à toi, c'est génial, thanks a lot for this great tutorial.
Cool! I love that whole Tom Waits record!
There's 3 different Tom Waits personalities on it - crazy, blues, folky!
Tom Waits was the reason I found your channel in the first place. Thanks. For I am a Raindog to.
It's my pleasure, Scott!
The Tom Waits/Ribot collaboration merits so much study!
There's so much to investigate!

Nice one man.... circus-like playing describes it perfectly. Lots of really clever bits in there... very cool... gracias
Yeah, there's definitely some calliope vibes to his moves with this one!
Next I gotta tackle "Singapore" - that one's a good bit weirder.
Thanks Eric, Rain Dogs was the album that started my fascination with Tom Waits many many years ago. You put a big smile on my face as I learned this on this gloomy Saturday in Melbourne!
That sounds like a perfect rainy day activity!
Cheers!
Lovely! This is one of my favourite Tom Waits tunes.
Thanks!
Yeah, the entire Rain Dogs album is one of my favorites by Waits :-)

Thanks Parrot!
I love it when my eclectic tastes in music are encouraged by other people all over the globe :-)
Great minds think alike!
great short notes and use of space, i love using space, it's the hidden ingredient people miss..
Thanks Eric, so love your lessons,
Thanks so much!
Viva Ribot!
Dear Eric, you are the man. And a Rain Dog Too!
Thanks so much, Tim!
As you can tell, I love working on Tom Waits/Ribot stuff. It's just so much fun!
Excellent. Thanks. Very creative and yet simple stuff
Exactly!
Nothing too mind-bending or difficult, just very clever and spirited playing.
Great tune. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Mark!
It's my pleasure, of course!
I don't know where I'd be without Tom Waits+Kathleen Brennan+Marc Ribot :-)
Eric Haugen up until subscribing to your channel I had never heard of them. 😁
Awesome tutorial. I was surprised and excited to find this!
Thanks Ryan!

So good, than you for the share, made me smile man
Just found this - excellent.
Ribot, what a genius
Marc USES those notes. Some of the best tension/release melodies.
Oh yeah he does!

Great stuff 😊👍

marc ribot is the man! you as well good sir.
Thanks so much, Rob!
He really is such a unique artist. His parts can seem simple, but there's so much going on behind the notes!
This is just super good. Everything I could ask for in a lesson. :)

"Circus-like." Perfect Ribot metaphor.
Thanks! Calliope-esque was my second choice, but doesn’t roll off the tongue so well :-)
awesome! great lesson!!!
It's my pleasure, man!
btw - I really love Slash's playing. He's a pretty big influence on my lead style. I'm a huge GnR nerd.

Top as usual !!!!

awesome mate
Thanks so much, Marty!
Very interesting Eric, another song I'm unfamiliar with, it kind of reminds me of 'el Grande Mafioso by Aynsley Lister .
All the best Karl
I can certainly hear some similarities there!
Excluding, of course, Tom Waits' signature whiskey+rusty nails voice :-)
Fantastic
Lol @ thumbnail
2nd one like that

RIbot is a complete original. Nobody else plays like that. And I really like your version of the second verse -- very Waits-ish. The only problem with this is your strings aren't old and rusty!
True! You can tell it's Ribot from 2 notes.

Dude that's the stuff right there - Waits, Ribot & Co. on FIRE!
Amazing ❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is awesome. Small tip: Ribot’s style on that record and others rests on the way he attacks the strings in a very forceful and loud manner.
Indeed! He attacks the strings like a great swordsman - ferocious and yet, still graceful!
Hi Eric, Can i suggest a song for you play? Aurora in pekin by Marc Ribot
Oh yeah that one's been requested a few times! It's definitely on the list!
When I was young and heard this tunes for the first time, it was far beyond my imagination how this could be played on a normal guitar at all 🤔
The genius of Marc Ribot!
Eternally one of my greatest heroes!
Twangy Goodness indeed.
Indeed!
I love the up and down movement of the chorus arpeggios.
FYI: If you want to play along with the record, you have to tune to A449, otherwise it sounds really bad.
Aha! Good ears!
Do you make these demos yourself? If so, what do you use for drums?
Yeah! I use Toontrack EZ Keys and EZ Drummer - really fun programs to work with!

Neat. In a couple of years it might obtain that vintage mojo and go up in price - its almost analog. Good luck!
Do hoist that rag next
Don't worry, it's on the list !
I dunno what's more enjoyable, the song or the way you explain it without going into a whole bunch of nonsense that just wastes time...
