Woolworth's Diner: The last of its kind

- It's the last of it's kind.
The only Woolworth Luncheonette counter left in America and it's right here in our community.
"We want the whole time that they're here to be an experience. Not just a burger or not just a soda pop, but an experience of maybe the way things use to be," said Jeremy Trammell, co-owner of Woolworth's Diner.
Tucked in the corner of the old F.W. Woolworth five-and-dime sits a 74 foot lunch counter, dishing up American classics much like it did in the 1950's.
"It's simple. It's good. It's fresh. That's what people love about it," said Joseph Trammell, co-owner of Woolworth's Diner.
"We take a lot of pride in being fresh so we make our own products here. We make our own pies, cakes, cookies lemonade, potato salad, macaroni salad, barbecue baked beans, everything is made in house," Jeremy Trammell said.
Eight years ago the Trammell brothers signed on to help the retro diner's legacy live on.
Their business plan, to make it feel like home to every customer who stops in.
"That's one of the biggest compliments on our food is when people will refer to it as - this tastes like when I was a kid," Jeremy Trammell said.
But it's about much more than food - it's family.
"There's a real friendliness and people start to learn eachother's names, but they were strangers to each other six months ago. They became friends just eating here at the same place," Trammell said.
"You know when you come here they always make you feel welcome. They make you feel at home," said Silvia Hernandez, a customer.
"If you go back to the way they were doing it in the good 'ol days, they were thinking about somebody not something. They were thinking about somebody," Trammell said.
"It reminds me of many fond memories growing up. People need to know what enjoyable places these were," said Marsha McKinney, another customer.
Woolworth's Diner is open seven days a week 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Thanks guys just because it's old doesn't mean it's worthless 🙏❤️🇺🇸
It's Woolworth something!
My great grand mother would take me with her to Woolworth when she was going to buy her fabrics and yarn. She made clothes for people around the neighborhood, and also quilts. She would sit me at the counter and order me a cheeseburger, fries and a coca cola. I could not have been older than 4 years old (making it sometime around 1975-1976), but I remember it like it was yesterday. And I wish I had known about this place back in 2017, my wife and I took a road trip from Las Vegas and we stopped to get gas in Bakersfield. I definitely wont miss going there next time.
It’s old-school little small business things like this, that really restore my faith in humanity. I pray that we see more of this in life. We desperately need it in this polarized, angry era that we live in. I confess I miss Woolworths, but I realize retail stores come and go. They didn’t have that many of the lunch counters when I was a kid but I remember a couple of them. And we definitely had Woolworths up until the early 90s. Such a bright spot today.
I remember my mom taking me to the Woolworth dept store when I was a kid.I had some good memories of my mom shopping for clothes.
Bring it back everywhere!
I enjoyed many meals at Woolworths. Especially when a was in junior high school. However, I cannot forget that many people before me sacrificed and got food thrown in their face and milk poured on them so I could eventually sit down in peace and have that meal.
The Woolworth that used to be in SC was really bad on racial profiling. I remember when I was a kid back in the 70 s and 80 's my brother and I would get followed by management and staff, get our pictures taken and demand that we would quickly leave. The one in Columbia, SC would refuse to serve blacks. They did leave a historical marker telling that dark American history story
Now look what we have an epidemic of black single motherhood and black crime through the roof not to mention a horrific ghetto culture in today's society!
mom would take me as a kid
and we had burgers at the counter great times. RIP MOMMA 06/18
Beautiful memories thank you for sharing
I used to work at the Woolworth’s here in Canada it was at queen & Yonge St. I was 15yrs old it was off the Queen St.subway. So people getting off the subway could come in for some great food , I loved working there….Oh the sweet memories of yesteryear…..✌️
Thank you KGET, we typically learn of these gems only after their last day of business. Great to discover while it’s thriving. looking forward to four hour drive to support these entrepreneurs as soon as possible.
I remember shopping at woodsworth with my grandma and grandfather in the 80s today I take my kids to the Woolworth Diner to eat and tell them about the great grandmother and grandfather and all the fun that I had as a kid visiting will work with him fun memories
Have wonderful memories of eating at Woolworths as a little girl and as a young adult. We used to go there for lunch after shopping with my grandmother and mother. Alway had consistently good and fresh food, and the wonderful showcase of pies and cakes. Oh my, makes my mouth drool just thinking about it!
wow, excellent; miss these places sometimes-
In the 80s we went to it as kids, it was in our city in Canada. The home made shakes, burgers and shopping all in one. ^.^
I remember meeting my mom downtown for burgers fries and coca cola, after eating ,we go shopping. Miss. the good old days
The hamburgers look like the IN-OUT burgers in California.
Location is in Bakersfield, California
Miss the good old days.
I remember Woolworths as a kid, it was the most cozy vibe. Best memories.
I sure miss the good old days. My parents used to take me to Woolworth in between 57 and 58 Bergenline Ave, West New York, New Jersey. I remember eating breakfast or having a milk shake with a burger there 🤧🥲❤️. It’s a great piece of Americana history and culture that sadly the new generation have no clue.
They had best burgers and fish n chips. I used to go there with my grandma and mom...good times and food.
What a wonderful timecapsule. I need to visit there and eat at that lunch counter.
Love this!
Awesome
Another place I remember was Nedicks in the Main Street subway terminal in Flushing, Queens, on the concourse above the line 7 terminal. At the end of the subway line in Times Square was another Nedicks and one at Journal Square, Jersey City, N.J. they had the best orange soda I ever tasted. Whether it still exists I do not know.
Wow thank you for sharing this. I’m a Jersey kid so I can relate with your story especially Journal Square. How things change…
@@wickedcrypto6004 I will tell you even more than you think. In 1964 we moved from Flushing to Richmond Hill both in the borough of Queens,NYC. We lived at 126th street 40 yards from Jamaica Avenue. On our first night I had a very hard time sleeping due to the subway line that ran above the Avenue to Jamaica. Every 15 minutes a subway train rambled through. I had heard the city never sleeps but never thought it was literally true! Even the buses ran all night at least once evey half hour. And not only that but twice a week after a subway train had passed another train came to a stop where my bedroom was located and waited for the signal to change to green. It was composed of retired World War 1 era subway cars with 2 flat cars that held garbage bins to take the trash fro the trash dumpsters at each subway station. And now for the modern era of 2023. Even Long Island City has changed and now has many skyscrapers. It is the neighborhood on the other side of the Queensborough Bridge in Queens. And Journal Square has a new hotel if I am not mistaken. Do you know what most people did on buses and trains in NYC during the Mad Men era? Answer...reading newspapers and magazines! And I practiced reading by having the midnight edition of the New York Daily News that my late father took home with him when he came from his midnight shift and I read it in the afternoon from school. Those were the days of old NYC in old America during the Mad Men era.
I remember the grants hot dog 😊
I went to the Woolworth's on 5th AVE in McKeesport PA when i was a kid ! They had the best Roast Beef and Mashed Potatoes !
i enjoyed working at the lunch counter at FW WOOLWORTH/ thanks
They had the best Mac and cheese !
helped close all the FW's in Kansas City back in the 80s. shame cause it was so freakin cool.
Wow, I really believe if someone made a chain out of these they would do great. Just simple classic dinner style food, with a vintage look. It would probably make a killing.
I wanna go.
There was one in our neighborhood.
My older sister worked the diner back then.
In Lacey, WA my brother and I would stare at the juice sloshing around in those juice dispensers. Lol.
Hi I'm from South Africa, here we have Woolworths foods shops, where they only sell foods, most of the Woolworths clothing shops also have a food section, it's interesting to know Woolworths is in other countries too
My last time was at a Woolworth's in Panama city Florida downtown. I smelled in all the dime store smells and the smell of the food. I reveled in it knowing it was not going to last much longer and it didn't. My new husband had cheeseburger and fries and I had a BLT and a root beer. I think it was 1990? I had only been married a few of years. I made a BLT the other day just like that one but my fries are not nearly as good as theirs.
I used to go to this store,I miss this store 😢
In Massachusetts
I wanna go there! 😊
I hope it grows to be as big as Woolworths used to be
I miss our Woolworth's :'(
I miss this downtown Columbus!!!
Cheap eats (hotdogs, hand dipped milkshakes & items from the dept store!!!💯🔥🔥🔥
The waffles and ice cream remains a classic. They used to have all different flavor syrups.
Love going here
we need that here in Orlando Fl
Absolutely, I'm in Kissimmee, bring it on!
whoolwort was the first store with a hamburger restaurant like "fast food" in Mexico.
Maybe the last in United States but not the last in America because still there are dozens of Woolworth Luncheonettes open in Mexico. In Mexico they are know as "Café Woolworth" or "Café W".
Our Woolsworth in Clarksburg, WV had the 25 cent photo booth.
1980s 5 Ave Brooklyn NY sunset park neighborhood. Remember my mom taking me. I will never forget.
😍 This Place As A Kid Harlem USA😜
God I remember this store
Woolworths is a supermarket chain in Australia!
And South Africa. A premium grocery store at that.
I don't remember eating in there in the 80s. I'll have to see if my mom can remember.
Wish they would put those in all the states.
There was also one in Flushing, Queens, NYC when we lived there 1961 til 1964. There are no Woolworths left in NYC and New York State.
Wanna Go There !!!! CB
Where is this located???? CB
I would gladly eat here! I’d want a burger, fries, and a coke!
This is in Kern County in California. They neglected to say what town they're in.
They should have Woolworth’s original cheesecake on their menu. Maybe they do.
I ate there....it wasn't all that!
What if this isn't the last of its kind? What if there are more Woolworth Luncheonette counters still there today? That would be great if that was the case. Lucky for us the Retro Decade Revival Project can help make it happen.
The new owner of the building destroyed these guys landmark business.
Only at the very end of this video does the guy reporter casually mention that it's in downtown Bakersfield almost as if it wasn't important to mention the location. I had to listen twice to hear the location.
I used to go with my grandma, pop a balloon and get a banana split for a penny!
❤️
What town is this? I've got to put this on my list.
Where is this place at, City and state? I was never in one, of those stores.

Where's the hot dog "rolling grill rack"?
Vest's Drugs on the corner of 19th & Chester used to have one of those. They made the best hot dogs. Not sure what's there anymore.
Yep the famous hot dog rack
Hello. I'm 76 and I have not found a hot dog professional prepared ona buttered bun with in a paper box sleeve with all the condiments like Woolworth 's in the 60s.unforgetable😊
What about the cheesecake!?😢
Bakersfield what, Outer Mongolia?
Yes but where????????
literally just an in-n-out...
Note the woman does not say please or thank you… sad!! Back in those days people knew how to behave
Your NOT "taking pride" in being fresh if your touching the cheese for the cheeseburgers with your bare hands 0.49
The guy looks like the food he makes. I can't believe he thinks that's actually good food. It's just another fast food joint.
